Spelling is definitely a roadblock in English, because it barely follows a regular pattern.
Does Korea do spelling tests in Korean? In the uk we had to do spelling tests, like, every week up until high school to make sure everyone knew how to spell even basic words like ‘doubt’ and ‘government’. In the US, they have spelling bees… I wonder if that’s a thing in places that don’t speak English?

    • @jinandhattie

Ha, I've been casually studying for maybe 3 months, and I still have issues reading Hangukmal quickly. Normal speed subtitles are way too fast for me, but if I pause, I can sound it out like a 5 year old, lol. Topic (Eun/Neun) and subject (I/Ga) marking particles and truly understanding their applicability to specify nuance in longer sentences is still a hang-up for me. I broadly get it, but not enough to make sentences that convey the nuance I would be able to in English. Location marking particles are significantly easier for whatever reason.
I find following a structured lesson plan works well with progressively introducing grammar rules, sentence arrangement (SVO vs. SOV), but I like to compliment that kinda progressive, bottom-up approach by just memorizing lists of common phrases, honorifics, words, ha-da verbs, Sino-Korean numbers, native numbers, fillers, slang. Makes it gel better if you expand vocab through memory while also learning how to build sentences and the grammar rules that govern them. It's just really dry and not always fulfilling to get bogged down in grammar when you just want to stay motivated and gain some feeling of accomplishment as you improve.

I learned English back when I was young using cartoons and games. Because in our country getting exposed to English is a must because most of the shows, cartoons, and games are in English so I either needed to learn it well or I won't understand any of it. Back when I was a kid my teachers wouldn't even be able to converse in full English and those were licensed teachers..

If your first language is an Asian language i recommend using that as a base instead of English to learn, for me it helped a lot! I know Hindi nd English, so while learning korean the lessons were in English but i used to make notes about pronunciation, sentence structure using Hindi instead of English, because for most Asian languages the sentence structure is similar to korean, english on the other hand is a language full of randomness and exceptions so learning anything using English is very very difficult.
