(FIXED) Rotherham Masborough was opened in 1840. It closed in 1988 due it being superseded by Rotherham Central which is closer to the city.

I remember stopping here in an HST as a small kid, during what turned out to be the station's last three years in service. Such a shame they had to replace it with a station that bigger trains couldn't use even though I could see how the pros of Central being closer to the town centre outweighed that con to an extent.

I enjoyed that, brought back memories of my time working for British Rail in York (1972-1987) and frequently travelling through Rotherham station, wondering why it had so few passengers!

I wouldn't say the track rationalisation of the 1970s were short sighted rather they were not fully thought through.

Both Central and Masborough should’ve stayed open. More is better than less.
