This was not clear in the video. Why would the Bulgarian choir going to Ren initiate Kujo to go after Ren? Kujo already knew about Ren and had to know about the success of the song before the choir came knocking. The video makes it seem like Kujo needs the money to pay the Bulgarians

This was great! I think the fatal mistake Kujo made was going through the lawyers rather than make ANY attempt to contact Ren directly. It also seems like he didn’t make an attempt to contact the publishers directly when he realized he wasn’t getting the contractual payments. I think he’s STILL confused about who was supposed to be paying him 🙄 … but it wasn’t Ren. From the screenshots of Kujo’s messages, it looks like he was using the BeatStars lawyer (legal representative), not an external attorney. So I’m not sure why the BeatStars attorney wouldn’t have cleared up any confusion over who was contractually obligated to clear the sample. That contract clause appears quite clear. And demanding a percentage of the master is ridiculous. Once it was clear that Ren was completely blindsided by this, Kujo had multiple opportunities to negotiate directly with Ren in good faith. And I agree, the creative solution to create a new song together with a 50:50 split, was a win-win-win … except for the attorneys. Kujo is and absolute FOOL not to take that offer. But the attorney probably gave Kujo bad advice, because the lawyer would only get a cut of a settlement off of Sick Boi. And if he was also representing BeatStars, he probably didn’t like Ren’s suggestion to do the new song outside of BeatStars. So I think the lawyer had a conflict of interest and was not looking for what was best for Kujo. But they all underestimated Ren, on every level. Ren tried to be fair and reasonable, but he’s a man of principle who has been to hell and back. I doubt they expected Ren to take the nuclear option and take Sick Boi down himself. But this is way, they get nothing … other than the retroactive publishing split after they sort out how much needs to go to the owner of the Bulgarian sample.
I felt absolutely horrible for Ren that this blew up right when he got home and was preparing for his show. Worst possible timing. Always amazed at how he powers his way through no matter what. What I'm noticing now is how he's turned this into an event, is promoting it so brilliantly and has the fans and reactors so wound up! Ren is the master of turning shit into gold. It doesn’t seem like Beat Stars was on the side of the artist based on how they went after Ren - ESPECIALLY when they escalated to trying to claim a % of rights to the master THEN try to claim 100% of the song/master. That crossed the line from just helping Kujo get the publishing money straightened out, which was a fair claim even according to Ren (& as he said, that’s an issue with the publishing company, not him personally.)

It sounds like the lawyer was holding the track hostage, asking for a huge amount, threatening to drag it out, assuming Ren is big and famous and will just settle. All they had to do is listen to Ren's music to know he doesn't care about the money but he does not like greed. And the contract I saw them post was the real contract, they were just purposely not showing the line before that says “if the artists makes any changes to the beat, then….”
Yeah, incredibly stupid decision on Kujo's part. Whatever lawyers he had advising him did NOT have his best interests at heart! It's so sad that he couldn't/wouldn't see that.

Thank you for explaining that it is not unusual for samples not to be cleared, and why. So it seems that KUJO neglected to clear the beat, but sold it on without making that clear to anyone. It would be interesting to know where KUJO found the money to pay for his lawyer, though, as he states in the texts that he is working a dead-end job to make ends meet.
I think at a certain level of membership to BeatStars they provide legal assistance for situations like this, although, I don’t see why they didn’t tell him he was wrong from the start
There are many lessons in this story. I think Kujo is an inexperienced young man. You can always find a rational argument for greed. It is important to realize that the lawyer is defending the case and not you. A direct settlement is not a deal for the lawyer. The increasingly complex legislation is opaque to the average person and does not serve the interests of society

@@cristarose503Another reactor made a great point that just because something is in a contract doesn’t make it legal. You can draw up a contract to have somebody unalive someone. Even if they follow the terms of the contract, that doesn’t make what they did legal.

I appreciate your explanation here Shae. What i dont understand is - so beatmakers regularly use samples without clearing/paying the original artist 1st. Then if the song gets big, the original sample maker might go after the beatmaker for using the sample without permission. Isn't that like stealing is ok & you're just hoping you dont get caught? Shae you are as qualified as much as anyone else to have your say about this. What you said about how making money off the production of beats isn’t easy and how beat makers who haven’t ticked all the right boxes to get samples they’ve used in their beats cleared, go into panic mode when their beat blows up is so true. I think this happened to Kujo and when he asked Ren for more money, it was probably partially because he knew with all the attention Sick Boi was getting that eventually the Bulgarian Choir’s management was gonna come after him because he had used their sample illegally. Ren tried to help Kujo out so much and the dude was such an idiot in return. Kujo, I am sure now realises he’s messed up his one real opportunity and he knows it. I feel sorry for him, he seems so naive and lacking in judgement. That was probably why he got the lawyers involved, but that’s when his trouble really escalated because they don’t care about Kujo (or Ren for that matter) they are just out to make money out of the whole situation and drag it on for as long as possible. Ren track tonight is really gonna hold a candle to the Industry and the music lawyers and those who facilitate beat sales, just by Ren’s track being out there, because anyone interested will want to know the background as to how the track came about; and when they find out they will be enlightened as to the games being played out in music land.

I could totally be wrong, but I think that anytime a producer says the Content ID can’t be turned on, it’s so the original artist doesn’t get notified the sample is being used, I’ll have to look into that part still.

Great video. I didn't realise it was pretty much normal practice for producers not to clear samples, so that was good to know. Kujo must really regret his (his teams) decision not to make a new track with Ren

@@Caseyd1966 it sounds like it’s common place because most songs that use their beats don’t become popular enough for the original sample owner to care. In this case, the song and album blew up so it got the Bulgarians’ attention. It seems like there has to be a better way but I am completely uneducated on this subject.
SO excited! One thing no one's been talking about is Kujo's claim that Ren broke the contract, which Ren admits he did - by not crediting Kujo for the first couple months Sick Boi was up, and for turning content ID ON. I know REN didn't turn it on, but apparently his agent did, and you're liable for your agents' work, soooo--- So Ren may have to pay for those breeches, BUT neither of those involve copyright. As I understand it, filing a false copyright strike can be taken quite seriously, and although the Bulgarian choir might have a claim, I don't see that Kujo does. So I think Sick Boi will be back up if Ren lets the case wind through the system.... ANYWAY thanks for your insight and perspective!

My understanding is that, initially, the owner of the choir sample didn’t know about kujo. Because Ren’s song got popular, that’s own the sample being illegally used was brought to their attention, so they reached out to Ren’s lawyer. The lawyer then reached out to Kujo, asking him to cover it because he’s the one who sold a beat with a stolen sample. Kujo refused to take legal responsibility, and while he was arguing with Ren’s lawyer, he figured he would look for a way to get more money, using a technicality. All the while, kujo completely disregard the fact that he sold a beat with an uncleared sample which voids the contract. Ren doesn’t owe kujo anything.
I'm not one who works in the music world, but as a 66+ year old, I remember when rap and beats first started hitting the music scene. I totally despised the people who put out "music" that sampled someone else's work, while calling their end product their own. Having said that, I was a bit miffed at Ren when he first posted Sick Boi to UA-cam without acknowledging kujo's part in the end product for the first few days/months after its release before he added the credit to him--but then got totally outraged that kujo sold a beat that included an unlicensed sample with no acknowledgement of the Bre Petrunko chant to the Bulgarian Chior. I figure Ren is (as always,) handling the situation with a pure dose of integrity, hope it's a lesson learned for all involved--and on the sidelines. Thanks for taking the time to comment on the issue.
It seems as if the problem was with the Bulgarian choir who thought that Ren sampled them independently of the KuJo beat that he purchased. When Ren provided proof of purchase of the beat ( which contained the BC sample) and likely sent them said beat they went after KuJo- who did not pay them/ credit them/ clear publishing rights etc with them. Ren tried to remedy the situation from both a legal standpoint and a business standpoint. We don’t know exactly what the BC was asking or exactly who they were asking it from- although I would assume that the sample appropriated was done directly by KuJo ( indirectly by Ren through the use of a legally purchased beat). Regardless it seems as if Greed and Envy are in play here. And ‘one man’s win became another man’s frenzy ‘ - and it became personal. Ren has always walked the walk. He offered more than was required of him - especially the idea of a collab with everything being split 50/50. Sounds like a win/win , but KuJo passed. Like that scene/ line from pretty woman - BIG MISTAKE. HUUGE!

And what he said in the beginning was true and made sense anyways. He obviously sees Ren was getting screwed, and Kujo done effed up. That's all that matters. Right?
None of it really makes sense to me, but I don’t think the strike would hold up, but Ren took it down himself. That’s why he was saying that he was holding the song ransom.
They contacted Ren, not Kujo…these don’t need to be assumptions. Ren states it in his videos on the matter. You should have researched first. Kujo signed a contract stating he owned all parts of the beat he published for sale on their site. He lied.

They contacted REN’s team. They paid them whatever amount and sent the rest to Kujo…telling him the rest went to the choir whose sample he used illegally. That is when Kujo decided he wanted not just 50/50 of publishing but an immediate $3000+ some percentage retroactive and future of the Sick Boi Master. This is what I understood. Sorry for the research comment…you started off seeming kind of wishy washy like you weren’t sure of facts. This whole thing is so annoying.
@@tlg22073 all good, it’s not easy to remember all the facts when you go live and I don’t edit my videos at all so I sometimes get things mixed up, it’s why I didn’t want to do the video in the first place, because even after watching REN’s video a few times, I still had questions and holes. I know the beginning of the video makes it seem like I was taking Kujo’s side, but I was doing the video as a time line of my thoughts on the situation, from knowing how a beat maker could have let the situation spiral out of control and by the end just hating the dude for what he put Ren through

There are many lessons in this story. I think Kujo is an inexperienced young man. You can always find a rational argument for greed. It is important to realize that the lawyer is defending the case and not you. A direct settlement is not a deal for the lawyer. The increasingly complex legislation is opaque to the average person and does not serve the interests of society
Fair enough about not clearing the samples, just DISCLOSE it. Because from what I’ve seen, Kujo didn’t ask for forgiveness OR permission

@@RikaShae Exactly. The first and the most grave breach of contract in my opinion was on Kujo's side - not informing the artist about the element of the beat that has not been cleared.
@@AgnesPerditaXthat's what I keep thinking - Kujo breached the contract at the very beginning by selling the beat without either clearing the sample or disclosing that it wasn't cleared. And it's not like it's a tiny snippet of the sample - the sample is all the way through the beat

@@cristarose503Another reactor made a great point that just because something is in a contract doesn’t make it legal. You can draw up a contract to have somebody unalive someone. Even if they follow the terms of the contract, that doesn’t make what they did legal.

I appreciate your explanation here Shae. What i dont understand is - so beatmakers regularly use samples without clearing/paying the original artist 1st. Then if the song gets big, the original sample maker might go after the beatmaker for using the sample without permission. Isn't that like stealing is ok & you're just hoping you dont get caught? Just trying to understand here.

Shae you are as qualified as much as anyone else to have your say about this. What you said about how making money off the production of beats isn’t easy and how beat makers who haven’t ticked all the right boxes to get samples they’ve used in their beats cleared, go into panic mode when their beat blows up is so true. I think this happened to Kujo and when he asked Ren for more money, it was probably partially because he knew with all the attention Sick Boi was getting that eventually the Bulgarian Choir’s management was gonna come after him because he had used their sample illegally. Ren tried to help Kujo out so much and the dude was such an idiot in return. Kujo, I am sure now realises he’s messed up his one real opportunity and he knows it. I feel sorry for him, he seems so naive and lacking in judgement. That was probably why he got the lawyers involved, but that’s when his trouble really escalated because they don’t care about Kujo (or Ren for that matter) they are just out to make money out of the whole situation and drag it on for as long as possible. Ren track tonight is really gonna hold a candle to the Industry and the music lawyers and those who facilitate beat sales, just by Ren’s track being out there, because anyone interested will want to know the background as to how the track came about; and when they find out they will be enlightened as to the games being played out in music land.
This is almost exactly how I feel. An “innocent” mistake that gets blown out of proportion then escalated to a point beyond repair and a dude with too much pride or arrogance to understand he effed up and doesn’t see the impact it’s gonna make. He’s about to see the impact

I could totally be wrong, but I think that anytime a producer says the Content ID can’t be turned on, it’s so the original artist doesn’t get notified the sample is being used, I’ll have to look into that part still.

@@Caseyd1966 it sounds like it’s common place because most songs that use their beats don’t become popular enough for the original sample owner to care. In this case, the song and album blew up so it got the Bulgarians’ attention. It seems like there has to be a better way but I am completely uneducated on this subject.
SO excited! One thing no one's been talking about is Kujo's claim that Ren broke the contract, which Ren admits he did - by not crediting Kujo for the first couple months Sick Boi was up, and for turning content ID ON. I know REN didn't turn it on, but apparently his agent did, and you're liable for your agents' work, soooo---
So Ren may have to pay for those breeches, BUT neither of those involve copyright. As I understand it, filing a false copyright strike can be taken quite seriously, and although the Bulgarian choir might have a claim, I don't see that Kujo does. So I think Sick Boi will be back up if Ren lets the case wind through the system....

My understanding is that, initially, the owner of the choir sample didn’t know about kujo. Because Ren’s song got popular, that’s own the sample being illegally used was brought to their attention, so they reached out to Ren’s lawyer.
The lawyer then reached out to Kujo, asking him to cover it because he’s the one who sold a beat with a stolen sample. Kujo refused to take legal responsibility, and while he was arguing with Ren’s lawyer, he figured he would look for a way to get more money, using a technicality. All the while, kujo completely disregard the fact that he sold a beat with an uncleared sample which voids the contract. Ren doesn’t owe kujo anything.
All I know, is what ever happens, it’s not on Ren at all, and he 100% knows it, or he wouldn’t have made BeatDown.

I'm not one who works in the music world, but as a 66+ year old, I remember when rap and beats first started hitting the music scene.
I totally despised the people who put out "music" that sampled someone else's work, while calling their end product their own.
Having said that, I was a bit miffed at Ren when he first posted Sick Boi to UA-cam without acknowledging kujo's part in the end product for the first few days/months after its release before he added the credit to him--but then got totally outraged that kujo sold a beat that included an unlicensed sample with no acknowledgement of the Bre Petrunko chant to the Bulgarian Chior.
I figure Ren is (as always,) handling the situation with a pure dose of integrity, hope it's a lesson learned for all involved--and on the sidelines.

It seems as if the problem was with the Bulgarian choir who thought that Ren sampled them independently of the KuJo beat that he purchased. When Ren provided proof of purchase of the beat ( which contained the BC sample) and likely sent them said beat they went after KuJo- who did not pay them/ credit them/ clear publishing rights etc with them. Ren tried to remedy the situation from both a legal standpoint and a business standpoint. We don’t know exactly what the BC was asking or exactly who they were asking it from- although I would assume that the sample appropriated was done directly by KuJo ( indirectly by Ren through the use of a legally purchased beat). Regardless it seems as if Greed and Envy are in play here. And ‘one man’s win became another man’s frenzy ‘ - and it became personal. Ren has always walked the walk. He offered more than was required of him - especially the idea of a collab with everything being split 50/50. Sounds like a win/win , but KuJo passed. Like that scene/ line from pretty woman - BIG MISTAKE. HUUGE!

I’m not sure TBH but he does have some beats that are one songs with 100k+ views, so he wasn’t like a completely unknown beat maker
They contacted Ren, not Kujo…these don’t need to be assumptions. Ren states it in his videos on the matter. You should have researched first. Kujo signed a contract stating he owned all parts of the beat he published for sale on their site. He lied.

They contacted REN’s team. They paid them whatever amount and sent the rest to Kujo…telling him the rest went to the choir whose sample he used illegally. That is when Kujo decided he wanted not just 50/50 of publishing but an immediate $3000+ some percentage retroactive and future of the Sick Boi Master. This is what I understood. Sorry for the research comment…you started off seeming kind of wishy washy like you weren’t sure of facts. This whole thing is so annoying.
@@tlg22073 all good, it’s not easy to remember all the facts when you go live and I don’t edit my videos at all so I sometimes get things mixed up, it’s why I didn’t want to do the video in the first place, because even after watching REN’s video a few times, I still had questions and holes. I know the beginning of the video makes it seem like I was taking Kujo’s side, but I was doing the video as a time line of my thoughts on the situation, from knowing how a beat maker could have let the situation spiral out of control and by the end just hating the dude for what he put Ren through
