  • Talk about choice real estate-the Eltz Castle in Wierschem, Germany, is a spectacular medieval structure that sits within a valley, surrounded by serene forestland. The Eltz family has owned this piece of enchanting beauty since 1157, and has kept residence at the estate for 34 generations. Although none of the Eltz clan currently occupies the 120-room castle full time, it is open to visitors, who travel from all over to witness the vast collection of historic treasures, including weapons, armor and art.

      @@ianmpurba620 Having your records of ancestral lineage was always useful, especially in Batak's tradition of marga, that even commoners can have somewhat extensive records of their ancestry. But we don't always keep the records of where their physical remains is. @Makedon Slav What do you mean "not too long ago"? Europeans have had more than extensive contact with other ethnicities for well over 2000 years. The middle east was a main trading route from china, egypt was an important civilization and greeks and anatolians are ethnically very different from germans, yet they've been in contact through the roman empire since BC. I don't know what your definition of "not too long ago" is, but multiple millenia are pretty long to me.

While what you're saying is technically true about the trading route, you need to keep in mind that mostly the rich could afford those products and even then it in was usually handled to them by white middlemen. So yes while there certainly was beneficial contact on both sides, most German commoners never had or barley ever had interactions with different races outside of war. The Geeks itself were/are considered as one of us (white). I can only speak for my granny but in her diary it's been made pretty clear that seeing a poc person travel through the village was something special. It was the first time she saw someone with a different skincolor and that hasn't been long ago.

    They actually left out the most important part. Eltz castle is basically an aristocratic co-op. It’s something called a Ganerbenburg-a castle owned by multiple families. Basically only a super rich noble family could afford a big castle-so sometimes multiple small noble families, knights, and branches of the same family would team up to be able to pay for one collective castle. So Eltz has multiple separate sections for different owners-and then they would all team up if say the castle was attacked. That’s what gives it this distinctive cluster structure. I thought it still had multiple owners? Maybe they’re branches of this same family.

      They’re all branches of the same family. In the tour, they mention that the sons of one of the Eltz lords all took up residence in the different sections of the castle, which gives each section its own style. Going from section to section, you walk from the 5th floor of one section straight across to the 3rd floor of another. Super neat tour!

      They use it as a vacation home pretty much. As you can immagine they are impossibly expensive to keep up. So the family sells tours to finance it. There is an office for the guides inside the main courtyard and right next to that there is a private section of the castle blocked off. The house, at one point, was inhabited by three branches of the same family. Each family had there own seperate section of the castle. The other two branches were eventually bought out by the last remaining family (the eltz family). There ancestral section of the castle was kept as a private residence and the other two sections are used for tours.

    I went to this castle probably 3 times by now(I live in Germany). It is really interesting to see how the furniture looked and what rooms were connected to each other. The beds were super small, looking like a childrens bedroom as in the past people were not as big as we are now(the average hight was about 1.50m). There were also many secret rooms hidden in the walls. These rooms either connected to a womans bedroom or it was an escape room going all the way down to the forest! It was a really cool experience even if you‘re not as interested in history(as myself) and would recommend going there.

      Western people mostly throw their parents into carehomes when they become a burden and some are fine with that. In asia especially south Asia. It's very normal for one or multiple siblings to let their parents move in with them or still live in the same house so he can also take care of them. Doesn't mean hes a slacker the kids will have jobs as well. Parents take care of us when we were young and we take care of them when they older. Just how our culture is family bonds and respect for the elder generations run deep. Not saying 100% of asians do this but it's safe to say its more than any western family.

      @eljanrimsa5843 3 роки тому

      @Ciano Scuro You give a lot of interesting details but at the same time you seem to have naive ideas about old medieval castles. First of all, costs are the big issue and have always been the big issue with maintaining big castles. Only the more wealthy among the aristocratic families owned enough land to support the maintenance of castles. That's not a problem here. The Eltz family belongs to the oldest aristocracy, has always been wealthy and still owns land and several castles in Germany and Croatia.
      Most of the old medeval castles were given up in the 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th century when most owners couldn't afford them anymore and most families who could afford them moved into cities for political reasons. The three main branches of the Eltz family lived in the castle and still added new buildings constantly well into 17th century. They acquired a city palace in Eltville but could afford to keep the old castle as well. They managed to manoeuver through French occupations and the revolutions and have stayed popular enough to get public help with renovations.
      > wood can be taken gratis from the forests
      That's a strange thing to say. Where do you live? In Germany, forests are owned (in this case by the Eltz family) and you can't take their wood gratis. In the Middle Ages, and probably even today, the forests provided a main form of steady income for the owners.

      @Frenchy War is terrible. Just like London, Warsaw or Berlin - Europe was rebuild on the ashes of our ancestors. It just saddens me that the allies are not just the heros who freed Europe and in particular Europe from facism but exapt for a few minor exaptions just interested in keeping their finances in check at any cost. The US didn't aid Europe, Britain still held its empire and the French their colonies while Russia continued to enslave the continent it just "freed" and wasn't much better under Stalin than Germany under Hitler exapt for the mass genocide of cause. Perhaps the other good thing the facists unintentionally created... The EU/NATO for peace and prosperity and the fall of the colonies. The world evolves in mysterious ways but I am glad to see that it changed for the better despite all of the old carnage.

    • @NightaYuu
      @NightaYuu 4 роки тому +1

      @Frenchy America really didn't have any business in WW2 except for playing the world police as they always love to do. But everyone basically was a bad guy in this war. And sadly the bombing was very cruel and I am sad that many people, especially British who did this, don't really know of the extent. Big cities like Frankfurt were about 65% destroyed. I live near Frankfurt and it is very visible that almost every heritage was destroyed. And even near the little town I live in, they bombed for some reason. I recently visited the graveyard and an inscription told about many people dying because a tiny passenger train was bombed in the middle of a field between towns. Bombing still was very inaccurate around those times, but them just aiming for destruction was very cruel. There literally was nothing to be gained from bombing farming villages, yet my grandmother tells how often they had to hide in the basement.
