The D-16 was, for a LONG time, considered the "poor man's" D-18. Solid wood spruce top, solid wood mahogany back and sides but more affordable. They used the D-16 to try different things like micarta and different man made materials on the bridges and fretboards as advances came along. I own the 2011 50th anniversary model of the D-16 GTL(a lefty) And it is a great instrument with gloss top and satin finish on the back and sides. Still love it!!

I own a 1994 D-16T. Great Guitar. They have a mortise and tenon neck joint and also the bracing is different,,,hybrid bracing. Things they have incorporated into other models,
