Imagine leaving your home for a day only to come back to it encased entirely in resin
Poor spider
Funny😜 I thought the same 😉
Imagine going to your friends house only to see all there furniture is in resin or made out of resin..
@@The_Wife_Of_Mitsuri Nightmare scenario
Imagine liveing your life as a plant enjoying the sun untill some farmer cuts you down boils you an makes beer out of you cause some person online wants to put beer in them and in there name on youtube lol 😂 stop being a 🍑
I’ve gotten webs out in tall grass , garden spiders make the best webs. I paint them with enamel in place, this lets them dry faster. I put resin on my wood and while wet I go out and catch the web . 👍👍👍👍
That sounds like a good way of doing it too, and quite different to my process. Thanks for watching!
So cool! Do you paint them with a brush or spray gun?
Spray can.
Wow! Well done 🎉 Running resin along the mold cast lines before the ‘big pour’ is genius, I wonder why more channels don’t do that!
Yes, I figured that out quite early in my use of resin. Thanks for watching
I was expecting to come out looking cool. But that is almost mesmerizing.
Oooo I agree! It looks more multidimensional than I expected! It would make an awesome shot for a Spider-Man title sequence
Super cool!
this seems like a new art form that could be continually perfected over decades.
i would have suggested using air to push the web into the resin. instead of the metal poker but it looks like it didnt really injure the web so maybe not.
spray painting the web was a great idea,
if the resin was perfectly clear, and the spider web painted black, it would look realllly cool as a thing you hang in the window, so the sunlight hits it., or even a milky white layer to contrast and make a stained glass type look in the sun
and youre final result looked great
Yes there are lots of different colours for both the web and a background that could be used. I may explore some of them and make a follow up video. Thanks for watching
@@barnabyhowesculpture also glow in the dark sprayt paint and then put the sculpture in the dark!
What an amazing impossible idea that you made possible with an elegant and brilliant pour ❤ it
Thank you so much 😊
That was a brilliant idea to encase a web. It turned out beautifully. Your channel is going to be well received. I wish you the best. I will be watching for future videos.
Thank you so much!
Beautiful…nice work…
Thank you very much!
Love the idea. Can I suggest you use a square thread that fits in the frame? You can cut it off when the resin has cured. Thanks for sharing. Subscribing 😍
Beautiful
Thank you!
Would love to see this done again but with a tarantulas webbing from an old enclosure, way thicker webbing which i don't think you would need to paint. By the way this turned out great! :)
Thank you! Not sure where I'd get tarantula web?
So, so cool! If I tried this, I would use a golden orb spider's web against a dark background. Thank you for such great inspiration!
You are so welcome!
Waiting for E&K to also make one
I had the same thought hahaha
Fascinating! Thank you! Beautiful result.
Thank you, that's appreciated!
Beautiful art, mate.
Many thanks!
Brilliant! Awesome results!
That is really cool
Stunning work, your channel is a hidden gem!!
Hey that's pretty good!
Glad you think so!
Pretty cool, good job ❤
I'm glad you like it, thanks.
good job
Thanks!
First time watching, was about halfway through the video before I realized there's not music I'm unable to hear, but the voiceover is muted.
Still understood everything that was going on with just the video editing.
I'm glad to hear me editing isn't to shabby. Thanks for watching
The last pour looked like it was full of bubbles, how did those all disappear? I thought the number 1 thing with resin was to avoid bubbles in the liquid?
I use polyester resin and not epoxy, and I think there's a big difference regarding bubbles between the two. They just float to the top and disappear before the resin hardens. Thanks for watching.
This was interesting enough to get me to subscribe😊
Id try keeping the webb in the catch and misting resin on to it
Most resin is quite thick, and I don't know any that could be sprayed or misted
It's beautiful :)
Thank you!
Very very clever. But I would have liked you to have added a fake spider to it.
Thank you. Maybe next time!
Looks amazing.
Brilliant !
Thank you!
Come to North Queensland. A golden orb spider would love to help. No paint required
I suspect I'd need a bigger web catcher!
could you use like white spray paint on a spider web and then cast it in uncolored resin? will that work? i know close to nothing about resin art so feel free to chime in lol
Yes that could be done, but the visibility of the web would depend on the colour of the background the resin was held in front of. I coloured the background to ensure the web was visible. Thanks for watching.
Waooaaouuuuuu❤
👍🏼💡
🔥
Thank you
👍👍
Ok I don’t know anything about resin casting but why can’t you just find a spider web and put it in the resin?
I didn't think it would work I'm happy to be wrong
Neither did I during certain parts of the process, I surprised myself!
Now make a mold out of a web
Why don't you just do a coat of resin over top. Save you from all sanding.😊
I wanted the web to cast well within the resin so it was clearly visible and you could look all around it. Plus polyester resin hardens with a tacky finish to the top surface that is exposed to the air. Thanks for watching!
❤🎉❤
How heart-warmingly optimistic you were to hope a spider would build a web in your frames. Good work. I admire your persistence.
Yes it was a bit optimistic. I'm also not sure how well it would have worked further down the line with the rest of the processes, even if a spider did build it's web in the frame. At least I got there in the end. Thanks for watching!
I think the blue was the perfect choice, the end result is super cool!
I honestly feel like black would’ve been better (Just my opinion). But the blue one looks really cool too.
Yes, the blue and white do go together very well. Thanks for watching.
Absolutely stunning! Spiders are the real "web designers" and Ive always found their webs quite beautiful. I love to photograph them. How amazing that you have accomplished capturing such a fragile, ethereal bit of nature for all to admire!
Thank you, you've summered up my intent for the project perfectly. Thank you for watching!
The web looks incredible . I really liked the way you used a small amount of resin to seal the mould, I’ve not seen that done before.
Thank you so much! Yes it's a technique that works really well.
I am surprised it worked! Spider webs can be so delicate but it looks amazing! Great job. I can't wait to see what you do next. 😁
Me too, I wasn't certain it would work out....until it did!
More people need to see this!!!! Absolutely stunning and gorgeous!!!!
Glad you kept trying!!! ❤❤❤
Thank you so much!!
@@barnabyhowesculpture you are very welcome 🤗
Definitely use black instead of blue next time
I was going to say the same thing
I like the blue but would definitely want to see a black version as well. Black would make it look more Halloween decoration to me - which is a pro or a con depending on your style 😂
Why?
This was super cool!
I would love to see you coat the strands of spider silk that make up the web in several layers/coatings of resin, letting each one cure. So then you would end up with a free-standing webbing, rather than having the web encased in resin.
You would probably still need to paint the web. It kind of makes sense that the resin ate away every paint, except one that's water soluble. You could start by dipping the web like you did in this video, but you may be able to use a dropper to apply beads of resin to a strand of web and then spread it out. Small beads of resin might even end up looking like water droplets on the web!
Very cool, I can imagine the spider saying "oh why did he have to use that one! I made a much better one a week before" 🕸️🕷️
😂👍
Lovely piece. I didn't know that aluminum foil would not stick to the resin.
I can tell you that my aluminium foil sure sticks to my resin...but I did use REALLY cheap foil - it looks like his is the good thick stuff.
@@stephaniefairey8633 i think it's actually foul tape and he possibly put resin release on it
foil*
Sticks to mine!
So, yes I do use the slightly thicker version of foil that you can get from the supermarket, but I don't add any release agent. I do however use polyester resin, so if you use epoxy it may behave differently.
Something you may want to try to stabilise the web is place the web in a box with a tea light heating a small tray of super glue. It should vaporize and attcah to the web but also leave a white haze to it when it dries
You can cut the middle into a small thin circular disk and sell it as a custom watch dial. You can even cut the rest of it as well as dials but obviously for a cheaper price than the middle part. I think you can make a lot of money selling those. And I wonder if it's possible to spray the web with luminous paint ? That would be a smashing feature for a watch to have a luminous web dial. Seriously consider it, it might be a great business opportunity. Good luck, totally love your channel
I've seen people capturing webs by spraying them with hair spray and then pressing a card against them. I wonder if that would work with foil? Then, instead of having the hoop around the outside and having to dip it in, you could just lay the foil into the thin layer of resin and peel it off when it's cured. You'd have to spray it white first, then with the hairspray, then capture it though.
Gorgeous! Loved how you showed what worked and what didn’t. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
Thanks so much! 😊
The way my younger cousin described doing this for a Sunday school class was that they used hairspray or you could probably use spray paint, but anyway, they sprayed it and then, once dry, they put it on a piece of black construction paper. I’m sure the same could be done with a black base made of resin. Following the same steps should yield results. Honestly I’ll have to try it out myself.
That could certainly work, good luck if you give it a go! Thanks for watching.
I was looking at trying to capture a feather and in doing so found that Japanese artisans would have a ceramic bowl kiln hot and place the feather upon the surface and it would turn to a carbon print on the surface. Straight away I thought of this and if a web would leave something if anything with this method.
Very interesting. ☮️🙂🇦🇺
I've seen that technique on a pottery show, and a web may well work too! Thanks for watching
no back ground color and add some color shift pigment or micro glitter to the web. or both... jmop. nice vid
Thanks for the ideas! I'm hoping to do a sequel.
Super work, now there is one heck of a proud spider out there, his home is viral. Thank you.
Haha, thanks!
I really admire the ingenuity throughout your whole process! The final piece is beautiful. ❤❤
Thank you, glad you liked it
Wow! It turned out incredibly cool!🕸😍 🕸
Good work! 👏👏👏
He has a very pleasant voice to listen to. He should consider doing Audible books lol. I have Subscribed.
Haha. Doing the voiceover is my least favourite part of the process, and hearing my own voice on UA-cam is rather perturbing, so glad you liked it.
@@barnabyhowesculpture 🥰you should love it, its a wonderful voice.
Could work great if you paint it gold!
That's a good idea.
Verrrry Beautyfull and Wonderfull!! I luv this midnight blue, great choice and complement to the ghostly web. Here’s an project idea: If you have, where you live, any plants that have dropped leaves that turn gauze-like and skeletal-ish in Autumn or Winter. I found a Holly bush that had these in its leaf litter........
Very nice. You can really see the web.
Cool idea but the spider would be like 🫨
True! Thanks for watching
I've seen people spray paint the web then capture it on colored paper while wet. Can you mist the web with white spray paint, let it dry then it's more sturdy and will show better in the resin? A common paint nozzle might not make a fine enough mist, not sure.
Wow one of the most beautiful resin pieces I've seen! I love how the paint sort of beaded up on the web, it looks like morning dew!
Thank you so much!
I couldn't believe that worked! Excellent!!
Je me demande quel serait le résultat avec une peinture phosphorescente à la place du blanc, ou bien même une peinture noire pour la toile d'araignée et un fond phosphorescent ;)
Or.. aluminium has an unnatural frequency that spiders wouldn't come near
If you ever try something like this again don't make it so thick it would have been just fine the thickness of the frame that you had to begin with fill it halfway with the blue add some more pigment if you need to you won't waste as much resin it did turn out good but thinner would be better😊😊😊 good luck
I am terrified of spiders but I do love their webs. Well done getting one so pristine. A dandelion clock or something so ethereal similar please?
👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
This kind of reminds me of a local news story over 20 years ago, there was a local lady that had just massive amounts of webs around bushes in her yard, she would spray paint (just plain ol spray paint) the webs silver or gold and then put a black poster board (that was cut to fit a photo frame) behind the painted web then pull it into the web, the wet paint acts like a glue to adhere the webs to the black poster board. Once dry she would then mount them in the frames and sell them at local craft shows and such ($10-$15ea) not bad for late 90's early 2000's
That's interesting to hear. I guess the desire to preserve something as ethereal as a spiders web has been about for a long time, but the processes for doing it are evolving. Thank you for watching!
Very cool! Love resin experiments. New subscriber ❤
Great job mate. What would it look like lit by LEDs?
Nice work :) Love it. Next you should cast with a spider walking the web :)
From the title I thought you meant like, making a negative mould and casting the shape of the web in resin. That would be some fragile resin lmao
Yeah, that would be a challenge
That is wonderful!
Thank you, that's appreciated.
its not a want, its a NEED. as a spider lover i need this in my house
Come on people let’s get him to 100k !!!
Wow, that's incredible! I've long wanted to make a piece of art using a real spider web, and now you've shown me a fantastic way to do it. Thank you! You have a new subscriber.
Oh that's great, I hope you have success if you try it out. I make me happy knowing that someone else my give it ago because of my video. Thanks for watching.
I think this is cool. Loved it. New subscriber here. Look forward to more videos
Awesome! Thank you!
Wow... that's amazing. I don't think I would have the patience to create such a beautiful piece like that. Kudos to you in your trials, errors and success. Just my 1 cent
Thank you, and thanks for watching.
Wowwwww this was amazing!!! Questions: why did you use mica powder instead of alcohol ink? I’m new to resin! Also how long did it take to sand? Love your work. Can’t wait to see more!
Thank you. So I use Polyester resin, and alcohol ink doesn't work in the same way it does with Epoxy resin. It took about 6 hours to sand and polish, which I did over a number of days.
this is really amazing!!! I love how it is a bit wobbly, maybe you could even make it feel more 3d and put it closer to the front. but this is no critique, just random ideas that immediately popped into my head :D it's great as it is. you got my subscription, like and comment for i hope you'll be very successful here :)
Thank you so much, that's very appreciated.
I had seen this video, gave it a thumbs up and commented how beautiful it was. You responded back with a thank you. I just watched the video again and have subscribed to your channel.
I love watching artistic channels especially when they are new to the UA-cam platform. Keep up the good work. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Oh thank you for that, it's appreciated. I hope my channel brings something a little different to the space. Glad you enjoyed it enough to watch it twice!
I just found your channel. This was pretty awesome! Maybe you can find webs and spray them in place before transferring. You can transfer onto black paper…. Just a thought. Not sure how the paper would hold up in the resin though.
Yes, someone else has mentioned this technique. My challenge was to encase just a web in resin, and as you say the paper may not hold up or look that good in resin. Thanks for watching!
Even though I have arachnophobia, I think it's pretty cool. How about if you spray paint it white or silver? I do that with dandelion clocks and it helps kind of thicken them and show up better.
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
@barnabyhowe Wow that looked incredible, you have the patience of a saint with them webs 🕸 but boy was it worth it.
I came across your channel whilst searching for something completely different but I'm glad I did, you have yourself a new sub 🎉 cant wait to binge watch some of your video's to see more of your work.
Thank you so much!
Good luck!!
Thank you!!
As an archivist, i hope you add some metadata information on the back of the finished resin! Year collected and created, your location, maybe even details about the process you used to encase the web. This item will last a long time and someone else might keep it for years to come.
Im Anishinaabe (indigenous to America) and watching this reminds me of our story about dream catchers. There are multiple sources that explain the Ojibwe dreamcatcher story. In my culture, we recreated the spider web with sinew. Even with the invention of resin, molding an existing spider's web isn't how we'd do things. There are so many ways to create spider webs that collecting one is more of an art project than something that should be done with regularity.
Dreamcatchers can be bought by anyone, but it's essential that a native American/American Indian/first nations person creates them. Many people see this important cultural item as a trinket without connections to Ojibwe or any indigenous peoples. Stories and cultural connections matter.
All that said, I'm glad this wasn't called a dreamcatcher and I was pleasantly surprised to see the amount of time and care put into preserving the spiderweb. It's a fascinating way to preserve a moment of time and the careful art that spiders do.
Hi there. I hadn't considered providing metadata about the piece, but I can image someone in the future coming across it and wanting to know the kind of information you mention. I'm hoping that creation of a video on how it was made is the best form of archival data. I will add location and date etc in the video description.
Thank you for the insight into dream catchers and how they are made. I hadn't considered the connection between them and what I was doing, as like you say my process was primarily an experimental art project, but I'm glad you feel I did the web justice in my preservation of it.
Many thanks for watching!
Dude insane! Truly love your work. i will say (and i hope you take no offense or anything) that to make your content more engaging and have viewer retention last longer i would add more subtle music or something in the background to add a little more depth to your videos. another thing is shortening the steps and such, for example the part where you take off the aluminum foil and wood, you showed every single “step” to taking it off. i think using 2 or so clips of that makes things much nicer. yet again i hope you don’t think im judging you harshly, but i really do hope you succeed in your channel growing! Love your work man!!
Hey, thanks for the feedback, it's appreciated. Trying to figure out a format I'm happy with and fine tuning that feels like a never ending process. Its a bit of balancing act when doing the editing, and I take your comment on board regarding editing out some of the less necessary footage. I actually get a few comments on my videos saying how nice it is not having any background music, so I guess you can't please everyone! Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for your comments!
It can't be done it's 100% impossible
Goow in the dark spary paint next time. May it woukd work. May it wouldnt. But if it DID work it woukd be so cool!
That is actually a very good idea, I'd just need to find the right paint
Excellent work here. If you make a first pour for the background with some texture to it, that may help provide more of a sense of depth to the piece as the eye will see the differences more than against a solid-colored background.
Thank you, and I will certainly consider your suggestion if I make a second one!
Very cool ❤😊
Well done! Watching from Australia..
Thanks so much! 😊
That is stunning! I used to get frames of black velvet and catch the webs... then spray with resin.
Thank you!
Brain killing idea, love it! The result is amazing!
Have you tried to highlight it from the sides?
The polished surfaces cause the web to be reflected when looking at the piece from the side. Glad you enjoyed the video!
