New Canary Islands rules for Brits after 'over-tourism' protests and anti-tourist graffiti

- UK holidaymakers could face new rules in the Canary Islands following "over-tourism" protests in popular destinations such as Lanzarote and Tenerife.
Thousands of locals took to the streets on Saturday, expressing their frustration at the influx of British tourists. An anti-tourist sentiment has been growing across the Canary Islands, with residents declaring "enough is enough".
Locals from Lanzarote, Tenerife and other islands have warned that there is a limit to the number of tourists the Canary Islands can handle.
To manage the increasing number of visitors, local authorities may introduce new rules and regulations, which you can find out more about in the above video.

But Britain can take an unending number of immigrants......makes no sense. At least tourists go home.
If they want to introduce a tax on visitor's, then the answer is simple do not go
Sounds like they’re fine with that
That's... literally what they want.
They want thebtax to be put towards housing for the native population. Rather than what the current tax is being spent on ie tourist accommodation such as hotels and villas
That's literally the point of measures like this. It's absolutely hilarious seeing pissed off brits saying that they'll get their own back on the Canary Islands by doing exactly what the Canary Islands want them to do - visit less.
They don't want brits there😂😂 so stay home PLEASE 😂
That’s absolutely fine, we will take our money elsewhere.
Totally agree,I'm English,English people have ruined the place.
But first find out what the protests are REALLY about. They're not protesting against tourists. They're protesting against their government blocking applications to build housing for local people. Don't believe everything you hear on the internet. This is fake news.
Margate is nice this time of the year.
😂😂😂
Great, bye.
😂 fool
We are in Tenerife now. Very welcoming. Everyone is friendly. They know tourism has brought wealth to the island. The protest is about housing policy for the local people.
My mum is in madeira atm and I have told her about British thuggy tourists and told her to lay off the gin she is 72 😂
This happens in Every high tourist destinations!! Many make money but Most of the people who lead a simple life - their life becomes hell due to rising Prices and inflation!!
Fair doos, they should make provisions for the locals, it's the greedy trying to make a buck as usual
You mean ruined the place!
Go home, you no welcome here
Please it’s all fake it’s nothing to do with tourists,if you ask the ones in the protest they will tell you they need the tourists but also they are asking for some homes to be built for them not tourists
Exactly 💯
That's like you saying English people don't mind immigration. They need immigration lol people don't care about what they need it's what they want they care about. People need trade with the illegal state in middle east but the public don't want it
@@constantinvaldor3742 I’m saying it’s about homes to be built for people of the the canary’s to live in not just tourist accommodation which is what their government is proposing to build, the people that live there need houses
@@jillbarnes199 I'm not saying that isn't the case. I'm saying the government obviously care about the money more than anything even more than what the people want. The people don't want the massive tourist invasion.

Unregulated housing, no affordable housing, and holiday lets have boomed. Local Authorities let it happen. The problem begins and ends there.

I live in Snowdonia. A large percentage of our revenue comes from tourism, however the increase is visitors does require some control. Of recent there has been a big increase in “irresponsible tourism “. That is people who are rude and abusive, parking in dangerous places, emptying waste tanks and chemical toilets into hedges and streams, etc. Visitors, we welcome you, but please show some respect and consideration for local residents and the countryside.
Take some of the massive taxes they generate and spend it on more police, but no it just disappears.
It's immigration that's the cancer. It ruins everything and will ruin Wales and the UK Europe.@@palmtreeshenanigans
@@palmtreeshenaniganswhy is spending money on the police the answer to the situation
Unfortunately this is just the state the world is going, how people behave and act, don’t take responsibility and also just don’t care about what they do and what happens. This isn’t just a British thing either, I just spent a few months in Bali and witnessed this from people all over the world.
I just believe this is how the world is heading, no accountability or punishment for anything nowadays.
@@christopherhigginson immigrationis to blame. And other things
I’ll help them!! I’ve been 5 times over the years and spent plenty but will never return. You’re welcome 😊
Air bnb is the problem not tourists
All these companies like air bnb & uber are shite, why people use them them is beyond me
Because it’s affordable and offers safer way of transport than regular taxi where taxi drivers used to rip off foreign customers. Airbnb offers alternative to horrible resorts which are overpriced and ruin the local landscape and architecture. You never know which country you are if staying in a resort as they are all the same. No character, just crowds of fat Americans and British tourists laying around swimming pools…😂
@@FUK-ULEZ idk uber works fine for me. No experience with air bnb.
and could be wrong but tourist is the problem or the lack of housing for locals. Air bnb vs hotels. No difference to housing demand and availability no?
@@zehaoli330 Of course there is a difference. Air bnb takes normal houses which could be rented rented by people living there, but you get way more profit by giving them to tourists on a weekly basis. Locals with a normal job cannot compete with what tourists are able to pay on a a once a year holiday budget.
This is incorrect…the protests are aimed at the second home market as in Cornwall…not tourism…without which they would not survive economically…it’s the second home owners pricing locals out of the market..:daily record…what you playing at?
Exactly true and it doesn’t take a lot to fact check
Fact
True
Plus they demand infrastructure, train, roads, they have 30%+ unemployment while getting 14M tourist a year (Australia only 9M) , so 2nd they need to charge more the tourism, national parks etc. not only Brits, Germans and Dutch as well.
welcome to UK..
Charge people to go certain places 🤣 that's not what the people want. It's all about money to the government
If its only for the British then don't go there plenty of other countries to go to
😂😂😂 brits aren't wanted anywhere
I didn't see anything in the video that would suggest that it is just for Brits - just the clickbait title.
The protest is against the high number of tourists, not only British. Ridiculous reporting!
I'll just visit places in my beautiful scotland went to tenerife for my honeymoon but won't go back now can't afford it now anyway.

Well I’m never going again. Plenty of places to go. Locals will soon moan when things go quiet and they have to then pay double themselves. Wtf
Just collectively boycott the Canaries en masse! There's lots of other places to go.
No tourists no canary islands, they better remember which side of their bread is buttered.
They're not complaining about tourists. This is fake news. They're complaining about the lack of housing for local people.
Unfortunately they use olive oil on bread not butter so it doesn’t make sense!
que dices bobolon
Shortly followed by massive across the board price rises for holidays. They think we’re daft.
Yes I agree with them and that,s how I feel about incomers in Britain.
An economy is no good if you cannot afford to live in it. It will look great on paper but no canarians will be left there to benefit from it. Same as Cornwall, Scottish Highlands, Venice, Barcelona, and countless other places.
Although in Scotland, the house prices in the far north east are very low considering the fantastic locations some of them are in. Maybe because not many people living up there, less demand and most people have ties and probably couldn’t relocate up there although I would if I got the chance. Im sharing near a city in north of England, house prices are way beyond average salaries here. I was a on a decent enough number at my previous job but nowhere near enough to buy round here unless I was with a partner earning similar money and have a huge deposit. In the 90s it would have been easy to get a nice semi or detached as a single buyer on an average salary. I fear for the younger generation in this country. Nobody will be able to afford anything without being in massive debt their whole lives.
@oddities-whatnot In Northeast Scotland and rural Scotland in general most of the local people cannot get on the housing market because the houses are driven up in price by demand from people such as yourself beyond the price of what can be generally afforded on the kinds of jobs available there. There will be places that rural Scots are probably driving up house prices because their purchasing power is higher than that of the locals too, it's a long chain of international knock on effects I would say caused by increasing use of property as an asset.
This is why they protested they want to benefit from tourism, not be punished for it. Inflation rocketed and now locals cannot afford homes and rents, this is down to the government not spending the massive taxes from tourism on locals as it should be. And who suffers now, the locals and hopefully big hotel conglomerates that will see, because of the way it has been worded in the British press, a stop to most tourism.
An accurate analysis of the situation.
@@oddities-whatnot The low house prices in the Highlands have caused many English folk to retire up here or buy up the houses as holiday lets meaning less workers for the local economy and less affordable homes for those workers to stay in. All at a time when the amount of motorhomes travelling up to there have skyrocketed.
Let’s all boycott it then. See how happy they are with 35 % of their GDP gone then if we aren’t welcome.
That sentiment will change when tourists no longer flock there. Take the money out of the holiday resorts and they will feel the blight of a lack of tourism.
Greece has a tourist tax and has not suffered one bit as a result.
@@TheBadVideoMaker I think you need to take a closer look at the Greek economy the past 100 years or so.
@@stuffmcstuff399 The Greek economy is an entirely different thing to the impact that a tourist tax has had on the Greek tourism industry. Introduced in 2018, Tourism to Greece was more than 10% higher last year than it was in the year before the tax was introduced.
if it was not for tourists they would still be living in the rock
What, are they fossils?
Simple solution here ..
Everybody boycott the canaries and take your holidays in Central Europe for 5 years then watch the economy in the canaries take a slump and wait for them to scream poverty. With tourism accounting for more than a third of economic gain it won't be long until they're wondering why nobody holidays there anymore. A 3 euro a day surcharge is a ludicrous move and similar to the recent suggestion that mainland and coastal regions of Spain are considering similar moves.
va
They'll be complaining when no British holidays there and they're looking at the government for support and hand outs.
Fake news..
All ready cost a great deal for a family of 4 to go on holiday to the Canary Islands, adding a visitor tax on top will drive them away to cheaper destinations
That's kind of the point... they want less people to turn up - it's basically a nice economic way of telling someone to 'fuck off'
@@EscapeAmbiencewhich means less money.
When your whole industry is based on tourists, getting rid of the main income is not a good idea
@@BlutoandCo I agree with you - I don't think they care though haha they quite literally want people to fuck off at this point so if that's what they are going for - they got it!
@@CR-og5ho There is, but when your economy starts suffering, you also start suffering, but they can enjoy the massive chunk of missing money from tourism and the increased prices if they really don't want holidaymakers to go there and spend.
Best thing the brits can do is boycott the place and spend our money elsewhere
The best thing Brits can do is find out the truth. This video is fake news.
Never been and never will
Thanks for the update
Least you got tourists we get benefists instead. Millions flock to see our benefits an never leave
Fine don't go there anymore see how they doing in 5 years time without tourism.
From what I understand they don’t want brits going there buying the property for an “ away” home ,forcing locals out the housing market . It’s the same in the U.K. .if your a local in Newquay for example ,you have no hope of finding a home
Recently went to the Canaries on a cruise. But if they don't want me back, or plan to tax me, I can oblige by going elsewhere... no problemo...
It's the same than London but without protests, is heavily expensive do tourism inside the UK than outside,
Will not go where I am not welcome. Will take my money elsewhere.
I think ( without being totally sure as I am from Spain ) it’s not about the tourists, it’s about the cost of leaving ( food, rent etc) due to lack of houses as the owners are using them as airbnbs , so the one available are extremely expensive to rent . Same problem as in Greek islands when there are no teachers or doctors because they can’t find a house to rent so they don’t go .
@idam5644 maybe they should be dealing with the locals then instead of attacking the tourists....
@@lepterfirefall they are not attacking tourists it’s their government they are protesting against this is fake
@jillbarnes199 so the anti tourist graffiti isn't real? The tourist go home rallies are not happening?
@@lepterfirefall you always get a element of people like that everywhere rent-a mob
Could and may.
I went in Feb this year, there where alot more Eastern Europeans than previous years (my partner is polish and she made the comment) because they too like a holiday
Its not 35%, its over 70%, thats how much tourism brings in, billions
And the germans own alot of the holiday lets, but the British are easy targets
And last, i talked to locals and small business owners whilst there. They dont mind the tourists, they do mind the wasted money caused by the VERY well paid government councils. They want higher wages to keep in line with inflation, more houses built, a cap on rent and rule changes to stop holiday homes being empty for 11 months.
Go to greece instead im sure they would love the extra money.
Sorry, where does it say Brits in reports from Spain ? Also I believe the protests are about foreigners buying up property and causing the prices to become unafordable for the Spanish that live there. Same thing happened in Portugal years ago and all the working people ended up living miles and miles away from their places of work.
Politicians use any excuse to add yet more taxation for their own pockets, rather than implement, for example, a limit on the number of incoming flights allowed per day. Easy and cheap to implement.
So the people were protesting against tourism and their government thinks let's monetize local places 😂😂😂😂
How do you think the Brit’s feel.. least we go home after our holiday. People come to our country in the 100s of thousands and never bugger off… just leech off the system never getting jobs and just committing crime

Yes it's true
Well some of you behave like hooligans, and expect VIP treatment when on holiday so don’t complain
Colonialism called, it wants a retraction made
Most British people in Spain can't speak Spanish, they just drink at pubs and cause general disturbance... at least immigrants here can speak English, that's a start
It’s not just about Brits though it’s all tourists .
Wait a few years when the locals koan about their wages dropping and things getting worse. Boycott the Canaries
Wish our country put us first
They're screwed without tourists. So go elsewhere.
So the ‘deport them’ brigade fell on their own sword? 😂
Yep 😂😂😂😂
What's that supposed to mean? No one in the UK demands tourists to be deported, there's a drastic difference between tourism, legal immigration and ILLEGAL immigration. It's really not hard to understand 😂 So again, I ask, what point are you trying to make here with this ignorant and uneducated comment? That goes for anyone who agrees with your nonsense as well 🤡

Most of Canary islands income is from tourists!!!!!!!!!???
I think it is . But ( without being sure as is am not from there) due to use of homes as airbnbs the left over houses for rent are very few and extremely expensive some with food etc. That makes leaving there a hell for locals if they don’t own an apartment or they are not hotel owners…. They need a return on the investment

tbf we brits don't know how to act in other people countries
The first female president of Tenerife “ SAYS EVERYTHING WE NEEDED TO HEAR “ we can happily take our hard earned money elsewhere. Remember when all these tourist locations were screaming for Brits to come and bring money into their economies after Covid ?
They have the same problems we do politicians!!!
Never seen so many bs comments on this...! The islands are trying to balance income and affordability... I love the Canary islands but it's completely unfair for foreigners or visitors causing the locals to be priced off the housing ladder, that doesn't sit right with me! €3 a night extra...??? I'd pay it...
Most of the visitors stay in accommodation completely unrelated to general housing. ‘Locals’ tend to live in the North of Tenerife and in the South where most tourists go there are mainly densely populated resort buildings.
Visitors aren’t doing it, it’s the sellers and the builders. Your own people are selling you out. Same thing happened in cornwall. They complain about tourists and people with second houses but it’s the Cornish people who sold them. How many people of Cornish heritage live in cornwall…? Almost none. Do you know where most people of Cornish heritage live now..? Norfolk…. So much for Cornish pride
A rare voice of reason in these comments, as opposed to the angry mob throwing their toys out of the pram.
@@DavidSmith-kf4ge [citation needed].
How can an island have too many tourists, surely the number of tourists arriving during the season is equal to the number of beds/accommodation available?
That's the problem, too many hotels being built, too much of the housing market being used as short-let rental, and not enough affordable accomodation for the locals.
If it wasn’t for tourists they wouldn’t be making much money
3 euros a day is not going to stop anyone from holidaying in Tenerife, just money for government
This is about foreigners owning property and Airbnb....causing a shortage in homes....
This Davila needs to up her game on getting some house built and ring fence them for first time buyers only
Don't go and watch there economy tank
The graffitti was written in English but stated Tourists go home, not just Brits but all Tourists.
Lies lies lies media hype. It to do with more property's being built for the locals.
If the government put a stop to a certain company buying all the properties to rent to holiday makers they would solve the housing crisis and there is no mention of all the other nationalitys that go there for the winter it's us Brits again that only go for 7/10/14 days for holiday 😠 mainland Spain is looking good this year see how long businesses last without us.
i mean tourists need to live somewhere. I don't think getting rid of the hotels or the company that you mentioned that is providing accommodation to tourists would be a good idea. It might help the housing problem but that would basically have a worse effect of legally limiting tourists. Not enough housing for tourists would mean less tourists meaning only the rich could visit which is basically not only losing the locals jobs but having the exact same effect of limiting tourists
They like the money though, and a tourism tax is illegal under the dreaded EU Laws
So illegal that Greece must be breaking the law. Where do you get your made up facts from?
Fewer but wealthier tourists is a good idea. Less of the big bellied lads traipsing around looking for the cheapest beer and chips.
It's not that simple. Thousands of people travel to all inclusive hotels and the local bars and restaurants never see anybody using their services. It is understandable that the local people who used to benefit from the influx of tourists
You know its complete rubbish when this is aimed at the brits only

Simple solution, take your money elsewhere.
The issue in the Canary Islands is like many other places, over-tourism, too many Air BNB's taking properties for locals off the market, too many crowds, too much development and over use of scarce resources and all the financial benefits not going to locals. I was recently in Tenerife and everywhere I went I was welcomed and not one bad look.
Worse case scenario is that my 2/3 holidays a year in Fuerteventura will end up elsewhere - it’s a shame though because I love the island and spend a lot of money every year while I’m holidaying there
Tbh even if it were true, I don't blame any country for doing things to protect for their own, their own people should come 1st. I know for a fact here in England we would to moan for any reason, if it were here people were coming for the sunny get aways.
They need to be very careful, once people realise there are much nicer places to holiday they will never return to the Canary islands then where would that leave hotels, bars, restaurants, bankrupt!! No business at all.
Brita should boycott the Canary islands and take their money elsewhere
I think the efforts to limit visitors isn't going to be an issue.
I won’t go back if you have to pay more tax. We pay enough tax on everything. How will paying more money help the islands themselves 😡 . They just lose the tourists
So, despite the shoddy, click-bait, headline...
1) No actual new rules yet, and
2) Not actually aimed solely at 'Brits' if they do come in.
"Daily Record"? Daily Dump.
2 minutes of my life I won't get back.
I know some cause trouble, i say deal with them. But to protest there are too many visitors will prevent millions visiting and spending what is a lot of money for the country. Shame they're destroying their income stream. They should rather have looked at why the government was not spending the hundreds of millions a year in taxes and increase police presence and build better infrastructure.
I thought it was the locals against the developments those guys would build a hotel in your backgarden if they could.
So they want the same money, but less people 😂 sounds about right for the Spanish
Lets stop going as a whole and watch them chage their jinds when the money stops
If there are so many tourists is because there is accomodation available. Their government allowed the opening of hundreds of hotels to boost tax revenue and now they want to solve a problem they caused with more tax revenue.
Public: We want homes stop building more holiday resorts
government: did someone say tourist tax?
So just another click bait title and thumbnail from an ailing newspaper. Lots of maybe and might dos but nothing actually concrete in terms of new rules. Pathetic..
So dumb, tourism brings money and business to their country. That is how any of them get employment. Tourism can increase crime if they said that was their focus i would understand. But post covid, tourism is what will increase thei4 GDP.🤔. Infact for wll countries. They should be happy people are going there. Such arrogance. So many other nice places to go if that is their complaint.
People are conflating housing with large resort buildings in different locations to the general population. Brighton, UK receives over 9.5million visitors a year; overnight stays around 1/5.
Brighton receives over 7 times its population in overnight visitors per year to give some context…

I've been there and I prefer the Greek Islands.
If you don’t want tourists other places will welcome them - you got a taste of what it is like without them during the pandemic and you did not like that much! Who wants to go on a holiday to a place that does not want you there and treat you like crap.
I love the Canary Islands and up until I retired 9 years ago, took all my holidays there, sometimes 3times a year. These once-kindly people always went above and beyond to ensure my family enjoyed every minute of our holidays. As I was in the hospitality business, I completely understand how difficult it can be to achieve their level of service. What the hell happened to this group of islands of paradise, but more importantly, to the people who are lucky enough to live there. Are they forgetting that, prior to the introduction of jet flight holidays in the very late 60s, they were mostly too poor and uneducated to live any sort of comfortable life and merely existed on growing and selling their own crops to eke out a meagre living, are they forgetting that many families had to live in caves as there were no houses to be found. They need to remember that the prosperity afforded to them can so easily be lost and they will regress to the bad old days.
I wonder how many bar restaurants and night club owners were begging for the drunk brits back in the covid days 🤔?
Uk tourism, we should all stop going for, say, one year. And let them then decide when they have no income.
That's one way of collapsing their economy. People will forget the canaries and go elsewhere with our money. I understand the people who live there also need somewhere to live on reasonable and realistic rental terms as a lot of properties are being turned over for tourists. That's not the fault of the tourists. It's the greed of those that govern the islands at the expense of their hard working citizens. True socialism at work.
The tourist tax in Greece hasn't stopped tourists visiting.
