GNARLY downwind send! Maui to Molokai to Oahu on hydrofoil

  • I have had this idea of connecting Maui, Molokai, and Oahu on hydrofoil unassisted for a few months now. We have raced these channels before but only with an escort boat. I called up my friend Hobey Moss to join me and he was down! Enjoy the RAW POV action.
    THIS WAS PERFORMED BY TRAINED PROFESSIONALS. DO NOT ATTEMPT.

    I’d only seen those hydrofoil boards with a motor attached to them, mind blowing how fast & far you can go with just the foils, leg power, and tons of youthful courage. Great adventure, awesome editing, great vid. Congrats to both of you - this one’s bound to stay in your hard-drive long enough to tell your own kids about it.😊

      It has a motor lol how do you think it moves?

    • @OwnRules1
      @OwnRules1 4 дні тому +6

      @@extremechimpout You couldn't be more wrong - the ones that do are called e-foils, where the "e" stands for their built in electric motor, which are the ones I mentioned I'd seen before. The ones this kid rides are fully autonomous and rely on water currents, balance and the pumping action you see him doing. The reason he makes it look so effortless is simply due to the fact that he is one of the best in the world at it, and his buddy is really good as well. The science behind this technology is fascinating and quite intricate - check out this vid explaining the physics of it all, though to be honest a lot of it goes beyond my comprehension - basically they work akin to airplane wings, where the water current as opposed to air beneath the wings creates the lift you see. Of note, all I've read since watching this vid mentions that it's extremely difficult to master them, and many suggest you need to be an experienced surfer first - the other option is learning with the e-powered ones.
      Here's a deep dive into the physics: ua-cam.com/video/fzig8JR2iT0/v-deo.html

    Something so satisfying about watching the foil blade cut through the water. I need to try this. Thank you for sharing this adventure. Loved watching it. ...I'd need like a heavy duty mini umbrella that I could deploy to pull me when my legs get tired...that is one hell of a work out.

    Epic crossings, I’ve crossed the Ka’iwi channel 5 times by sailboat from LA. Seeing those swells brings back a flood of memories. There’s nothing like downwind swell riding.😎

    I have _never_ heard of this sport until now and I'm fascinated by the mechanics of it. I'd love to model those wings and run some CFD on them to see how they generate lift and what performance improvements could be made.

    Hey. You changed from eagle x 800 to 900 for this downwind. Is it only for the take off with the paddle to make it less tiring? Or is it also for the ride itself? Can you explain the differences you feel between the 800 and 900. thx

      Thank you! It was amazing. There’s so much energy in these channels and to get to do them without an escort really shows you how small you are. It’s really easy to get caught up in the mix when you’re racing and there’s other competitors and other boats around you . But when you’re solo, it’s a whole nother level of excitement and adrenaline. Pure concentration and pure flow state - extremely relaxing to be honest.
