I was sweating through this video - particularly because of how defensive he/she was and yet still no bite to the guy doing the handling. Hats off - braver than me! I must admit though that I could not wait to read the comments on this - It always fascinates me how such a hugely debated topic can cause such a divide. Some really interesting points of view here and it's always a learning experience reading other's opinions, experiences and research. Particularly as I am in the hobby myself. Beautiful creatures.

I've heard the H. Maculata being very similar to the S. Calciatum has very similar venom, well my adult female tagged me on the index finger and it was unbelievably painful

Mac it was just immediately burning and throbbing super bad, swelled up really fat and stayed that way for about a week, the pain subsided after about 8 hours, never got sick or had any other symptoms but the P. Ornata that got me did come with crazy bad cramping about 12 hours after the initial bite

they are the featherleg baboon, an arboreal tarantula with that adaptation so they can jump from trees better. the males have even bigger "feathers" on their legs.
this is showing a very efficient method for handling an old world (specifically baboon) tarantula. He already had the t out of it's home, which is the place you will see the most frequent defensive behavior. Then, using the screwdriver as the prodding tool, (you never want to prod an OW with your hand) he basically tricks the tarantula into thinking he's an inanimate object. My heart would be going crazy if I was in his shoes, though. Understanding is much different than actually doing lol.
Im new to the hobby. Not that Im eager to handle an OW lol but Im just wondering - in general or for the most part, can they still be handled efficiently like New Worlds can? without much risk of a bite. If so, is this trick you mention, how people do it?

calceatums are very beautiful spiders but I would not handle one on purpose. when mine was juvenile/sub-adult it escaped while I was rehousing it and it ran up my arm and sat on my shoulder i nearly went pp 😭 but I super carefully paintbrushed it back down my arm and into its new enclosure trying not to panic. very fast and very bolty and very unpredictable spider. but also I dont think I have ever got a threat posture from it so I wouldnt say mine is a defensive spider at all just VERY bolty

This isnt an obt :)) P Murinus is not an aggressive species, its defensive, while P calceatum is aggressive(will chase you around the room) and also faster I think.

I have three OBTS, all big chickens, but you never know. Temperament is so personal to individual Ts. I have spiders that can definitely kill me I'd handle before I handled some of my silly 'beginner' T's just because of personality.
XularusXIII well , a lot of T's are incredible fast if they want to. Most of the Old world species are, even more are some of the areborial ones. It has a reason some people joke about them to be able to "teleport " or "do a Houdini "..

I had a male OBT that was very calm and never once displayed any aggression. the species in this video (Stromatopelma calceatum) has very potent venom, and is both fast and aggressive. I certainly wouldnt want to handle it. I dont handle any of my T's though, i generally think its a bad idea regardless of what species it is. the key to keeping T's is to never be complacent. They ALL have the ability to bite, and they ALL have venom. as long as you do your research, and treat the animal with respect then they make safe and interesting pets.

No ones calling in your masculinity over this. There are plenty of T. owners that won't get the "HOT" T's due to small children being in the house which the tarantula could possibly kill. Also if you want to get involved in hot T's I'd recommend the Psalmopoeus irminia since they are only about 5.5 inches max (rarely 7 inches). I just transferred mine today and was scared to death lol but everything went smoothly.

I fully agree and have been saying that for years Phuzion! I've handled every T type over a period of nearly 10 years and have never been bitten and never hurt a T or had any sort of issue. I use my own common sense and 'methods'. I M O a brush is a) biteable and b) more 'predator' like ;-)

Their exosceleton easily breaks/ ruptures which causes them to "bleed" out if they fall more than a few inches deep .

Why not have someone bring you her cage while you were at the photo-shoot cage/set? Walking all that distance with her crawling all over your body just seems like it was stressful...also high up enough that if you fell and tripped over something, there's a possibility that you might fall on her and kill her...(though she would probably run away before that happened possibility is still there....however...the other possibility is she may try to jump and end up falling on something hard enough to split her abdomen.) I'm just wondering why take the risk of harm to her? It'd also save time if someone just brought her cage to you while you watched her at the set...Also there were sooooooooooooooooo many places she could escape to while she was being carried...I'm actually surprised she didn't jump into any of those bushes!

Nothing at all to do with masculinity at the end of the day, I think have a bit of a gift at handling them coupled with the common sense techniques. My 12 year old son would handle it almost better than I do as he seems to have that same gift even better than I do, that said, I strongly recommend no child handles any of the renowned more venomous tarantulas!
Naw man. I'd handle my regalis all day over a featherleg. My regalis is 6" right now and the biggest coward ever. Strangely my geniculata and my hamoriis are the most likely to pop me, lol.
This was really a terrible example how to deal with a tarantula if you cared about it. It's likely to jump or fall from your body as you're walking around with it, which could easily kill it, not to mention teasing it to cause it stress. Their booties are fragile and would Splat wide open if dropped or if it fell. So this video is not funny or cute and shows a really bad example.

My 12 year old son would handle it almost better than I do as he seems to have that same gift even better than I do, that said, I strongly recommend no child handles any of the renowned more venomous tarantulas!
Play with a Poecilotheria Regalis like that then we know for sure you're in the big leagues.
Naw man. I'd handle my regalis all day over a featherleg. My regalis is 6" right now and the biggest coward ever. Strangely my geniculata and my hamoriis are the most likely to pop me, lol.
This was really a terrible example how to deal with a tarantula if you cared about it. It's likely to jump or fall from your body as you're walking around with it, which could easily kill it, not to mention teasing it to cause it stress. Their booties are fragile and would Splat wide open if dropped or if it fell. So this video is not funny or cute and shows a really bad example.
