The AI industry may not have the same mining waves as crypto, but there will also be a LOT of startups that go bust, so the resale market might be pretty active. The hype in the AI industry is absolutely bonkers with companies spending tens of millions on hardware they don't even have a plan for.

When crypto value went down it did for every miner and the GPUs became attractive only to gamers, if an AI startup fails because of a shitty idea or business model another one will be willing and able to pay a lot more than any gamer ever could for those used GPUs

@@zDToddy Buying used hardware normally is less beneficial to a business vs an individual. Business buy new to ensure valid warranties, support, and least risk of bad product. It also is much easier to qualify for tax breaks paying full price and racking up the business expense than trying to save a nickel on a used PC of hardware.

AI replaces things. So it won't go away in the near future. The AI, that encounters us in our daily life can completely run on next GEN CPU accelerators. Only for people running into a bottleneck there, a GPU for AI makes sense. And most of those people will prefer cloud solutions, because it is usually more cost-efficient and easier scalable. Things might change with LLMs, but those are usually provided as a service and not mend to be run on your local computer. So I don't see are large bubble there. But I agree that it is a hype just because it is new for most people.

No, Its quite different I am afraid, Realistically there are a few separate parts to what makes a card expensive 1- Chip itself, the issue here is all chips that are the same nm/size cost the same regardless of specs, you are paying for how many chips fit on a wafer, and how many chips are defective and need extra processing to be recycled. Its basically how many good chips that can be produced within a given period, time = money. 2- Board and components like VRAM, cost has nothing to do with this VRAM cost the same as RAM chips to produce the difference is they are profiled differently during production VRAM is low Latency at the cost of High Bandwidth, RAM is High Bandwidth at the cost of Latency - This is NVidias way of Artificially producing product stacks by altering the config of the board it allows NVidia to control the Chips potential, simply by lowering or eliminating Voltage control, lowering VRAM and the controllers performance you can tier products into your market segments. 3- Cooler costs

  • @arielgrossman3303

The most important thing I think is not the performance of the cards, but the increasing amount of RAM they have. Most of the time, AI models take a lot of RAM (especially the latest boom of LLMs). Also, nvidia launched a line of "hobbyist" AI GPUs. They still cost like a 4090 or more so many people would still go with consumer great GPUs.

Nvidia Tesla P100, eBay for around $300 would offer far more benefit to anyone wanting to attempt AI on a desktop. Using consumer cards for this purpose, is not going to happen. Until it's been tried, it seems to make sense as they're both GPUs after all. However, they're totally different and those datacenter cards, don't have shaders or direct-X support. I'm thinking that this shortage won't last much longer, but only because I'm basing this off of or moving manufacturing to Mexico instead of going through China, China was the top producer of these cards all around the world, but if we can have them created closer nearby our country, and it can be done for cheaper than China, I could see the prices of a lot of different things becoming much cheaper, this will boost the economy of Mexico and the prices will naturally go down because suddenly they're much closer so when it comes to the trading routes it's less expensive, and number two is because that country needs production, and because they're near america, it will absolutely benefit us to do that, so a lot of American companies are moving to Mexico in order to produce whatever they produce and that's already helping, now the word is that some Chinese companies are also moving to Mexico because they don't want to lose out on that market, so they are willing to go the expense of creating a company in Mexico in order to keep their customers in America, but with the intentions of war going on on that other side of the world, this could also be a bad thing depending on how it's said and done, but if all else goes well, we could see a significantly better outcome to our overall economy once that takes place.

I got myself a bunch yesterday, ScourgeBringer, Slay the Spire, Noita, Cuphead. Gifted 2 to my gf.
This is coming from someone who loves realistic graphics. But as things are today, not just the industry but our (not USA) country, after switching to Linux 2 weeks ago and now seeing what I could play that didn't require online and anticheats, I thought why not give these smaller games a try. They even weigh less than 1GB!
Trust ME (bro), I totally get it if you're not into these. But I'd suggest people to give them a try. What's 5 dollars or less in comparison to 70 dollars for an unfinished buggy game that looks good because of lighting but has no meat in its bones because the gameplay it's just garbage?
I was personally looking for something like a cheap MegaMan. I've never played MegaMan, but didn't know which one was the good one(s) and didn't know if I bought say, 2, needed to play 1 first because of the story. But got myself all the rest that kinda feel that space. Also installed others that I already had but didn't give a proper try. Kingdoms and Castles! (I'm being invaded by Vikings right now, so when I get into my save again, I'll probably lose the hamlet).

The word is AMD is having seemingly unending issues with the top stack of RDNA 4 causing multiple other project teams to have to help out much to the detriment of all of those projects. They now just have a zombie team working on it in case there is a breakthrough but AMD has sent their teams packing back to their original projects and to ensure the mid range of RDNA 4 stays on track.
Think of RDNA 4 as RDNA 3.5. It's going to improve everything including Ray Tracing performance and efficiency but there won't be a top stack. In fact it's just like the RDNA 1 launch. It was a success even though it didn't compete at the very top end. Then AMD was able to launch a very successful RDNA 2. It looks like that's what AMD is hoping for. The word is RDNA 5, so far, is on track.
These decisions btw were made very recently making your theory impossible. TSMC won't change allocation like that in such short notice. This is exactly what happened with RDNA 3. TSMC couldn't change allocation and AMD was forced to launch with a flawed product.

No. They are re-doing what they did with RDNA1 to RDNA2. They stopped at mid-range RDNA1 and focused on a full line-up for RDNA2.
Since they don't want to re-live what happened with the launch and bad sales of RDNA3, they will only go up to Mid-Tier RNDA3 and focus their resources on further developing RNDA5. Keep in mind RDNA5 is already in developement, soo they will need Engineers to work on that, in order to deliver a well-designed product.
It is a wise choise from AMD imho. I'd rather they take the time and resources to develope a healthy GPU line-up, just like they did with their Ryzen CPUs. Not saying that AM5 CPUs had the very best start, but the last AM4 generation was a banger!

As someone who works in programming and knows others in the field, there has been an influx of gpu purchases for AI development of all sizes over the last year. It definitely will ramp up. Personally I have a 3070 and 6700xt in my main rigs and play non AAA games at 1440p so I have little incentive to upgrade, but some future projects will incorporate ML and I’ll most likely need to purchase a few cards to build a new workstation for testing.

You already see it in apartment listings. One company's AI software alone has resulted in 15-20% rent increases just this last year, nationwide. It adjusts prices hourly and can inflate a market within days if more than about 1/3 of companies use the software. All of this is pure hell for us who rent, but pure profit for these rental corporations that run our lives. In some cities, like where I live, 90%+ of all rentals are corporate owned and almost all of the rest are also using this software to try to complete. So rents went up by $400 a month in one year due to "market demand". Across the entire city, with only a handful of exceptions. Mind, you, this is an urban area of over three million people and pay as well as vacancy rates haven't budged one bit. It's all AI manipulation.
And that's just one industry, since the word is out.
      Basically the old meme:
      Idea / ???? / Profit!
      Has become:

I delayed my own build because of the crypto & covid price hikes until recently, when the situation in the mid-range market had just dipped its toes back into the "recovery" range.
Since I completed my latest build fairly recently, I'm in the lucky position to not need to be building a new PC anytime soon. My previous build served me decently well for 10 years. Barring unexpected failures I have no reason to assume, that the current build won't be able to last me as long. So I'd ride this "AI-pocalypse" out for as long as I possibly can.

This is one of the reasons I still come back to this channel whenever I can. You're good at pointing out the stirring nightmare going on behind the curtain while the hands are doing everything they can to jiggle the keys. The first omen of this GPU shortage was a few months back when Elon went crazy and bought up tons of compute specifically to the tune of 10K units. The other omen was a few weeks ago when the market started to bottom out on high end RX 6000 and 7000 series GPUs. I'm not in a good spot for this right now as I'm still on a RX 580 and want to do some high end development but still on a 1080p monitor and my other equipment is really long in the tooth as well.
I'll most likely wait for GDDR7 components to appear in graphics products just because I want an extreme advantage in memory speed with the next unit that I purchase, which may end up being early next year. Meanwhile there's a generational shrink going on with phones and Snapdragon Gen 3 just around the corner. It might be worth replacing my 2015 era phone before replacing my 2017 era GPU.

I just swapped from my old RX 580 to a 6650XT, the lower midrange cards are definitely still at a fair price point at the moment, although for 1080p stuff a 580 is still perfectly adequate for most things. My new card is definitely better than what I had before, but it was a splurge upgrade for sure, not something I *needed* to keep up with the games I play. The 580 is still a good workhorse and likely will remain that way for at least another couple years.

I'm working on a lot of stuff right now to weigh the possibilities of returning to VR and desktop streaming but DX11 is kicking my ass and I'm feature locked out of anything DX 12_0 and Vulkan (unstable). AMD had a 50% reduction in gaming card revenue and only had an 18% drop in profits with a 14% drop in one of their other divisions. AMD lives and dies by their ownership of the console market at this point and their server CPU market. If you look at steam survey, no one buys AMD, and it has been steadily in decline since the 2012 or 2013. NVidia has the mindshare and it is propagated by most of the techtuber community other than HUB. Even Jay only mentioned 40 and 30 series, ignoring that the best gaming deals are the 6700XT in price per frame. UFD still to this day bitches that AMD went a month without an update to the 6000 series drivers when 7000 series was seriously broken. I bet he wouldn't have said a word if NVidia didn't have a month without a driver release. Even Linus only said he'd go to a 7900XTX as a form of backlash against NVidia. Jensen owns their minds and will continue doing so, as long as NVidia is allowed to lead on what is expected. When AMD has added new features to improve quality of life for gamers, they get flat out ignored. AMD prices their GPUs at only a small discount relative to NVidia because they've tried undercutting them by a big percentage and it doesn't net them any gains and only causes them a bigger loss for that generation because new people don't switch. The only ones who switch are those that flop back and forth and the rest are people who are already using AMD cards.

I think it's time for developers to understand that gamers are being strapped by various competing markets. First Crypto, now AI. Developers need to dig up the arcane practice of optimization. GPU Power has been an unstoppable force for years now and games have been able to squeak by, without optimizing their trash code because GPU's are powerful enough to brute force their way into higher FPS.
Instead of GPU's getting more and more powerful, code needs to get leaner, faster, and less farmed out existing libraries. Games written in engines like Unreal, will never run better than baseline Unreal. And guess what, Unreal is a bloated monster of a game engine.

What I foresee being the solution is AI-centric compute tasks going straight to dedicated AI hardware, so that GPUs can move on to doing graphical stuff. The value of real-time procedural generation within games is too lucrative for the industry, but also too damn demanding for the GPUs that most users are going to be gaming on. There's also an elephant in the room that isn't being discussed enough, and it's the fact that analog chips are so much more efficient at these tasks than GPUs ever will be. It's just kinda dumb that we're still using GPUs for the bulk of these tasks. I think once the GPU and AI tasks split to separate hardware, things will start to normalize for consumers. Consumers don't have a need for stupidly powerful AI learning hardware. We want frames! And if our AI needs increase rapidly, then we'd be better off upgrading that component rather than killing our aging GPUs with a heavy load. We've already got PCIe bandwidth for days, so we might as well use it.

But even with that much of an upgrade it took me a good while to commit to it, despite having more than enough money to do so. What pushed me over the edge was, on one hand the 4GB of VRAM on the 970 starting to be a problem and on the other not wanting to get caught by the next shortage. So i started looking for decent deals and found a lucky one in an auction only one other guy was bidding on. To me it feels like a good time right now to keep your eyes open if you're due an upgrade, as Jay said, availability is good right now, hence the prices are low'ish (compared to launch). 50 Series is still a year off and will likely have a slow and pained launch again so the question you need to ask yourself do you have to upgrade within the next 1.5 to 2 years imo.

The whole issue comes from the somewhat fact that GPU execution units/cores which were originaly designed to offload the CPU from the compute intensive work of rendering 3D games scenes started to be versatile enough to perform tasks totally unrelated to graphics but on the contrary had become general purpose - They just didn't implement functions that were needed to perform Operating system stuff and whatnot. This is akin to what the 80387 (the math coprocessor) could do, but at a much higher level. I personally predict that, not before long, one of those designer is going to separate the two branches : One for highly 3D rendering with instructions highly optimized for this articular workload, and another one with a more number grinding approach which is needed for AI or crypto.. A crypto miner or an AI oriented business will not have any interrest in DLSS or bits of silicon dedicated to do some raytracing or saturated operations - but will need accelerated hashing or manipulating large arrays.. Everyone would win - Gamers get their sweet candies with chips that ae designed for anything BUT 3D Rendering.. and AI/Crypto/HPC(High Performance Computing) will not be bothering with the specialized logic of 3D (or game logic in general)..

The regular 4070, 4080 and 4090 are insanely overpriced here so the price/performance isn't that good, while the 4060(ti) isn't a consideration due to having only 8GB memory and not much futureproofing in terms of speed.

Same here, I dont know if you speak about Canada but this is my case. I had a 1070 and I got the 4070 ti since the 80 and 90 are wayy too expensive. Sure the ram limitation isnt great but I can still play 4k maxout in many games or 2k at 120 fps stable. My 1070 was really at his end of life. I could wait but wait for what? The 5000 series? When, how much...we cant wait forever. and AMD is still unstable from what I tried. I wanted the 4080 since the 90 is over 2000$ which doesnt make sens to spend that much for a graphic card but even the 4080 is 1800+. Add the taxes on that -.-.

I want to build a computer soon. I've been holding off for awhile. I'm currently running a 2080TI. My problem is that I have some car stuff that needs to happen and I run a blog that deals in some very expensive things, so its not going to happen right now. I guess that means I'll have to contend with the GPU apocalypse like I had to when I got my 2080TI, which was incredibly expensive at the time.

Jay, Just wanted to say thank you for all the information you share. So many of the tech UA-cam creators just repeat how ADM will kill NVIDIA with this new "whatever" then their next video is that NVIDIA will kill AMD with what they are doing. Your videos give real, timely and interesting information. Thanks again and don't tell people get you down. You do a great job.

I thought about buying myself an AI system, but realized pretty quickly that stuff moves so fast it only makes sense to rent cloud GPUs, nobody in their right mind is buying consumer GPUs to train networks

    • @teslainvestah5003
      @teslainvestah5003 10 місяців тому

I don't know whether they bought the GPUs for this purpose, or whether they are in their right minds, but... I've definitely seen people on civitai use their own personal RTX 4090s to create Stable Diffusion checkpoints and LoRAs.
Complete control over your own system might be a bigger selling point than it sounds.

    • @dahahaka
      @dahahaka 10 місяців тому

@@teslainvestah5003 you have complete control over your system and data when renting GPUs, it's just running somewhere else an you pay like 1$ an hour for like 48 gigs of VRAM, a 4090 makes 0 sense to buy for that purpose.
If you plan on using it otherwise and for learning a bit of AI on the side or getting started sure... But other than that kinda pointless

Picked up my 4090 FE a little over a month ago but didn't start building until right now. My 7800X3D is coming later this week and I will complete my build by this weekend.
I was going to wait until later this year for the prices to go down on certain parts like the mobo and ram but I won't be losing out a lot so I don't mind the bad timing so much. With this news tho k glad that I was able to secure my GPU tho. I was going to wait for the 50 series but I figured it will probably start at $1,800+ for the 5090s. I only want to game in 4K so it made sense to get a 4090 even tho they're way overpriced. It cost to play I guess. Now staying under $4K is hard haha. I had a budget of $3K which was doable but I figured to pay a little more and have it last a little longer. I'm planning to keep this build for at least 5 years so. I'm settling on $3,500 which I don't mind.

I have become concerned enough about this I went ahead and ordered a 7900xt. First major gpu upgrade in a long time. I don't think I will need anything more powerful for years since I game at 1440p and am fine with that.

@JayzTwoCents, I gotta give you a shout out. Because of this video I decided to upgrade my GPU a bit earlier than I had to, and the day after my guy ordered the card, the price rose by 100 bucks, so this video saved me a chunk of change. Thanks!

as always with a good video. I picked up a 6600XT on launch day for $496.44 and I'm a bit over my limit at 1080p which I don't think I'll need to upgrade for the next 2/3 years. Yes, it won't be the best, as you said it's better to get a ps5 instead of an upgrade

I was honestly holding off to see if AMD was gonna drop anything to compete with the 4090 but based on their recent posts regarding not competing in the high end & now this video along with another video from a different tech reviewer a few days ago. I literally just ordered a 7900 XTX. My 5700XT has lasted me this long & is still doing it's thing so hopefully this 7900XTX will hang on for at least 3-4 years.

Yup, and actually, games graphics are reaching a level where it will be really difficult to be prettier, faster, or whatever. I mean, when games will have photorealistic characteristics, there will be no point in trying to add more reflections or lights to look « more realistic than reality »... With Unreal 5.2, the level of fine details is already so amazing that I don't see a near future where it will be a dire need to have more fps or more details on something that is already beautiful and realistic as hell. So much that the difference between « max settings » and « ultra nightmare » graphic settings is not even possible to notice...
I think there's a good reason with GPUs are not improving much between generations, lately (other than scamming people by selling a DLSS 3.0 update on a RTX 3000 card and call it a 4000) : it's just because we're reaching a point where there will be no point in adding more details and frills to something that is already awesome.

I'm running a 6600, and when I eventually upgrade (probably in 5 years or so lol) I'll go for a 7600XT (heard good things about it, still gonna do a lot of research).
Waiting for a gen to be 1 or 2 gens behind the current one and sweeping up the best models of that "obsolete" gen are the play as far as I'm concerned.

    • @KurosakiNaturo
      @KurosakiNaturo 10 місяців тому +1

@@QueertyUCR solid pick. As far as my research tells me, the 5700xt is a slightly weaker version of the rx 6600 (which itself is a weaker version of the 6900XT I think, might be wrong), with the primary difference being the ability to make use of Ray Tracing.
So long as the rest of her build isn't bottlenecked by the CPU as mine is, or by RAM as mine used to be, it should last her a good bit, especially if she sticks to 1080p gaming at medium/high settings for the less demanding modern games, and goes low/medium for the more demanding ones. Mixing and matching visual settings is the best way forward though. (for games that allow you to individually tune that sort of thing).
