This rendition of Radharaman Datta’s song ‘Tai ami gour bole daki’, by Parvathy Baul , was performed at the Bangla Sangskriti Utsab, in Sylhet, in 2017.
Parvathy Baul was born Mousumi Parial in East Bengal, India on October 25, 1976 to a traditional Bengali Brahmin family, where she was classically trained in singing, dance and music. At the age of 16, while on a train on her way to Shantiniketan with her brother, Parvathy encountered a blind Baul street musician performing the traditional folk music of the mystic Baul minstrels from Bengal. The folk music also inspired her to pursue visual arts, painting and drawing, which subsequently led her to enroll at the prestigious university in Shantiniketan, a town founded by famous Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore. In her early years, she learnt Kathak, a classical dance, from Srilekha Mukherjee. She received training as a visual artist at Kala Bhavan, an art school at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan. Parvathy was instantly mesmerised by the depth and spiritual intensity of the music and songs. From that point on she knew that Baul music would be her path in life. She studied closely with two of the most respected Baul singer-gurus of the previous generation, Sri Sanatan Das Thakur Baul and Sri Shoshanko Goshai. She was recognized by Sanatan Das Baul as both a musical and spiritual teacher in the Baul tradition, and is now carrying forward his spiritual legacy. Parvathy has performed Baul music in over forty countries, including such prestigious concert halls and music festivals as the Noh Theater in Kyoto, the World Music Center in New York City, and the Festival of World Sacred Music in Fez, Morocco.

Song-writer, composer, and Baul Radharaman Datta was born in Sunamganj, Sylhet, in 1833. Sunamganj is located in the Bhati region, comprising low-lying areas washed and flooded by rivers and ebb-tides, in large tracts of the Mymensingh, Tripura and Sylhet districts. The region is renowned for its prodigious legacy of musicians and mystics. Radharaman Dutta's vaishnavism shaped his musical work and led him to a life of asceticism. The revival of the Dhamail tradition - a song and dance form recalling the union of Radha-Krishna, mainly performed by the womenfolk during marriages and other auspicious occasions - is attributed to him. In line with the Baul belief system, Radharaman’s songs emphasize spontaneity (sahaja) and the states of religious ecstasy and creativity that come of their own accord, without effort. His philosophy is also grounded in Deha-tatva, which seeks divinity in human beings. Radharaman died in 1915, at his own house, where there is a shrine today. During his lifetime, Radharaman may have composed over three thousand Dhamail compositions, and songs, referred to as Geet . His songs are widely sung in Bangladesh and West Bengal, and in recent times, covered by many contemporary musicians.

To encourage and cherish the practice of the arts, Bengal Foundation organised the Bangla Sangskriti Utsab, a 10-day long cultural festival in Sylhet from February 22 to March 3, 2017. Over 400 poets-writers-singers-musicians-dancers-stage actors-craftspersons-painters performed and engaged in various kinds of programming at the festival, over the ten days.
