I love your liminal space videos! It's one of those where it scares the shit out of me but that fear has dwindled over time with age and now I love the spooky scary hollow feeling it gives, it's almost beautiful.
10:30 This is so weird. You just spoke an exact childhood memory of mine. My first house as a kid (and it really was the first besides an apartment I don't remember) it had endless backyards just like this. And no joke, I have a distinct memory of barbecuing on our tiny porch when our cousins were over. I would notice the heat waves and think they were a portal to another world. I would walk through them and me and my cousins would wander in the back grass areas. I rarely could go there because it wasn't safe since it was public property kinda. I was so Itty bitty yet I remembered it and it always stuck with me.
You are becoming one of my favorite youtubers, your content is entertaining and I find the overall vibe of your channel is comforting. Thank you for being what I look forward to at the end of the day !
Wow the thumbnail and the start are the same. When i clicked on the video, i thought my phone was glitching. It looked really cool. And also, great video as always! Love it!
I think the most common liminal space experience I use to have is when I use to work clean up at a mall, and seeing something like the massive parking lot with crappy orange and white lights completely empty, It's weirdly jarring, more so when its a snowy or rainy night.
The red fire pic is definitely real. I have a few pics from when we experienced the same thing in Port Macquarie (Australia) a couple years ago. Was eerie as hell
Liminal space is being beaten into obscurity with the onslaught of Backrooms content being pumped out en masse. I’ve seen this happen with Slenderman content in the early-mid 2010’s. There was so much Slenderman series and stories being created that it eventually killed the genre because everyone just got sick of it. Once Hollywood gets it’s hands on the Backrooms (and it will happen) it will be officially dead.
I feel like the best liminal space photos are the ones that invoke that sense of deja vu. The ones that make you feel like you've been to that place but you definitely havent. I personally dont like the manufactured or obviously unsettling images of liminal space because to me they're either trying to hard or the fact that there is human intent behind the image ruins it for me. That magic of capturing liminal space in the wild in its most raw form makes me more nerve racking to me. Liminal space is my new favorite internet "thing" (idk what to call it) because i feel like it only really has affect on people who grew up in the mid 90s to early 2000s.
you just had to post while i’m in the middle of Jaws 3 but i’m excited to check out some liminal spaces once i’m done triggering my submechaniphobia with this movie lol 😅
Greggg What do you think about what happened to the submarine of ocean gate? You often talk about thalassophobia and I too "suffer" from it and this news terrifies me
Absolutely terrifying stuff. It is a tragedy that 5 lives were lost, but I also don’t know how anyone thought getting on the submarine was a good idea. Soooo many red flags.
Speaking of liminal games, you should play a game called dream logic, it's very liminal centric and quite beautiful, actually. It's not a very long game and I think you'd enjoy it
I feel like the liminal space family needs a post-apocalyptic category at this point. Like, similar nostalgia vibes, but GRIMY and BUSTED and DARK. I love your editing style, by the way. Subtle, yet remarkably effective.
the comment about the water slide really inspired me to write lol After wandering in the dark, you conclude that the land is so vast, to the point where nothing is visible for miles. eventually you stumble upon a strange structure with a water slide protruding from it. It appears as if no one is around yet there is the distinct sound of rushing water seemingly coming from the slide. You decide to climb the steps to scout from a higher point. You peek into the abyss of the slide only to suddenly feel a force, as if someone is pushing you. You are sucked in. somehow the inside of the slide is darker than even the night sky outside. You are paralyzed with fear as you slide down. After what feels like minuets, you see a light. finally, expecting to have reached the end pool you feel a wave of relief wash over you. However, you don’t end up landing in a normal pool. As you splash into the tile, you note that which is soaked in a only few inches of water. the massive structure envelopes and intimidates you. The arches so high up, easily dominate your feeble form, stretching tens of feel into an intricate dark celling. Every surface is covered in the same tile you currently sit on. It’s so quiet. So quiet it’s eerie and suddenly you notice the distinct lack of the crashing of water, which should have been coming from the slide you just came out of. Tensely, you turn around, expecting to be met with the gaping mouth of the slide, only to see a copy of the arches in front of you, slide nowhere in site. After staring in shock for a good few minutes, you slowly stand up, your shoes and butt soaked. Looking around, every way is seemingly the same, arches leading into to a pitch black abyss. You have no idea what could be lying ahead as you making your way into a random void.
Have you ever played Playdead Studio's Inside? The nuke site image reminded me of it and some of the game's concept art. Inside is kind of a goldmine for liminal space feelings, honestly.
That slide image isn't "more backrooms or poolrooms". It's a traditional pool based liminal space image, which came before the poolrooms. Pools were always popular amongst liminal spaces. Some of the most popular are real pools
1:53 is the single scariest liminal space ive seen for me, the fact you cant see anything but would be able to hear everything, and anything could hear you
It was super smoky here in Oregon a couple years ago, and yes it was that red around sunrise and sunset. Very scary to wake up to, along with the stay indoors advisory.
Finally - a liminal space I've been to! Yes, that's the 4th floor of the Seattle Public Library; mainly a lot of meeting rooms and computer classes behind those red doors. The whole 4th looks like a set out of a Stanley Kubrick film. The other floors of the library are much more conventional.
You've been my go to channel when I need to just get away from life. But you have the potential to be more than that, but do what you like doing. Sorry, I'm a bit tipsy and just wanted to show my appreciation some how brother 🎉
My understanding of liminal space was that it was oddly familiar. Like you’ve seen it before but can’t really put your finger on it. (I hope you see this idk y but it’s driving me crazy just thinking of a transition place)
I enjoy GregBroDudeMan sober, and I enjoy GregBroDudeMan un-sober. It's just the perfect amount of non-thinking my last 2 braincells have to do to enjoy GregBroDudeMan's videos. I'd also dare to say that the photo at 11:04 goes beyond crazy. It's insane-o-style, because bro.. That pic, with that context? Bro.
Re: the sky being red, yes I can imagine that. The northwest experience those colors every year. It's just a thing that is a consequence of the sun filtering through the smoke.
"Each lightbulb has it's own outfit on." "It's like evil carpet" "This hallway makes me need psychiatrics" "Couch themed purgatory" "And the cooler is the save point" "You could hit this and get decaffeinated" ....I'm just here for the one liners honestly.
These two channels are also amazing for pool rooms and the backrooms--I'd love to see your take on them! Love your videos each time they come out. There's something so comforting about just chilling and sharing things I'm also curious or obsessed with! Thanks for all the good times. Another way to define liminal spaces is places that are taken out of their intended context/purpose or seemingly didn't have one to begin with. A house without furniture can be technically considered transitional, but it's definitely _meant_ to have people and furniture in it, so it feels off without.
Quite dissapointed that liminal spaces kinda lose their magic at this point, cause people are posting everything despite the fact that most of the submitted photos are just normal, nothing special about them (f.e. the strawberry field), then mixing them with backrooms and then I'm dissapointed.. but thanks for this video anyways. It wasn't as interesting as the others from "liminal series", but I still enjoyed it and I'm glad that this topic and nostalgia/ dreamcore is still relevant to your channel 🤘🏼
When I was a kid, my city always lost power a lot during monsoon (they've improved a lot over the years) and so it was normal to suddenly be dropped into darkness in the middle of a school day, the storm blackened out the sun and when the lights went out, it was so dark. In most of my schools they had a single special light at the front of every classroom that went on automatically on an auxiliary power (a battery probably)!when the room got dark, a single, dark orange square, so you could still see the teacher and class could resume. It was weirdly surreal, and liminal, even in a class with 20 or 30 other kids, when that orange light was all you could see. It felt wrong like you're not really supposed to be there, but you literally are, because it's school lol. And as an adult, whenever I pass a school at night, sometimes those classrooms still have a functioning emergency light from the power outage days, glowing dark orange in the corner of the building, casting slightly onto the dark alleyway or parking lot nearby, and it still gives me that weird feeling, a room shouldn't be lit in orange, it's disorienting. They're like a night light so that rooms are never completely dark, for safety reasons, usually meant to come on at night when the regular lights turn off, but the fact that they would just teach us by night light because they couldn't just cancel class whenever the lights were out, just always felt so strange.
Perhaps the unsettling thing about liminal space is that it reminds us nothing is permanent. We get comfortable in our way of thinking and going about life, we resist change. So when the nothingness or emptiness of a space is blatantly and undeniably THE reality that outlives our bustling, loud, and populated ways, we have no choice but to take it in.
This HAS to have been mentioned before, but have you played Super Liminal? It doesn't quite have the feeling of a great liminal space photo, but the weirdness and really cool perspective puzzles are fantastic. I feel like your channel is just begging to have a playthrough!
Personally I think liminal space is when something doesn’t belong, or something should be there. Therefore, it makes an atmosphere that is eerie. For example, you are looking at a Burger King in sand dunes, and it is extremely clean looking. First, the restaurant doesn’t belong in a place like that. Second, being clean is important because it should be dusty and run down, but it’s not. Places of transition are liminal because there should be something there, but it is being moved at the moment. So it’s when something is out of place.
Absolute love grocery store liminal space pics but can’t seem to find a whole lot….and I’m not talking about the back rooms. Just liminal. Same with empty malls
I saw a trippy vaguely liminal pic earlier today so what a nice video to get today. Thanks, Greg~. 💞 I think those fences are wrong too. Also also, I do live in New York, bro it looked like Silent Hill everything was so orange.
I swear there are very few channels I watch that are on the same exact thought wave length as I am. There are several times in each video I watch of yours that you literally say the same thing I do at the same time. If that makes sense. Also I see those white plastic fences every time I walk out my front door bc my neighbor decided to enclose his entire front porch in them. We live in a duplex so the fence is like 2 feet from my door. It is so irritating.
Most of the maps of GMOD are very liminal.I have expirenced them, since i have GMOD.The fact that you are alone in this places gives you creeps and liminalities.I can call GMOD a liminal space simulator.
Great video as usual Greg! I recently watched your video about sweaty gaming. Very relatable to say the least. You mentioned you had an N64. I have one my dad used to play on and my favorite game of all time is on it. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Just wanted to say it is a great game and it would be awesome if you made maybe a few playthrough episodes on it. Just an idea.
your comment about a brain working in an office reminds me of the show Severence. it's a show about people that work in an office that do not keep their memories when they leave work or when they arrive at work. two completely different lives.
That milk on the floor would freak me out. It's not the kind of thing anyone normal would leave on purpose, and it would have to be done after people left. With only those lights on, it looks like it's meant to make someone stop and investigate. Whoever did it could be hiding in the dark nearby.
I install fences currently and can fully agree that white pvc fences have such a wrong feeling to them. Edit:I was installing one of the pvc fences when NY was like that (6:04)
They don’t really freak me out too much but I always get a little heebie heebies when they look uncanny valley. Also you’re great, Greg, thanks for the new phobias 🥲
My theory is liminal space makes normal people FEEL like they’re dissociating. I dissociate constantly and sometimes have episodes of derealization where everything feels like a simulation including the people around me and my own body. Basically I live inside the backrooms no matter where I go, including the constant sense of dread and being hunted 😂 I feel like since liminal/backrooms became possible everyone understands my life haha Edit: it’s not just me, this is a common ptsd symptom and trauma response. Over 4% of people are estimated to experience dissociative disorders at some point in their lives. Everyone experiences healthy dissociation such as when driving or watching tv, scrolling and losing track of time, etc. But for some people it’s very disturbing. Liminal photos are a great example of what these symptoms feel like. I wish there were more awareness of it, it’s hard to describe my life to people who don’t have the disorder but seeing peoples reactions to these pictures is so interesting cause it feels like people finally understand.
Buffalo Bayou Park has a cistern, built in 1920-something (and holds uo to like 20,000,000 gallons), that they opened up to the public. It has some interesting optical and auditory phenomena due to how it was built. ...it flooded during hurricane Harvey, so there's that.
You deserve more recognition man, the niche audience plus youtube wizardry is doing you dirty 😭
It's true but when you posted this the video just came out so take that into account.
Right dude I was shocked when I clicked and saw he has less than 100k!
Agree

Black is the scariest color, the concept of being covered by darkness and not knowing what lurks in the shadows or what stalks you is quite scary.
a interesting idea you could do is look at the phobia of whirlpools, i think it would be a cool vid to make to add on to your thalassaphobia vids
This is a good idea. That scene in Pirates of the Caribbean thenworlds end where they're in a gigantic whirlpool freaked me out

I notice you are sporting a very dapper, liminal monochrome hat for this video. I applaud your commitment to the theme, sir.

"Couch themed purgatory" is a cool name

brooooo. maybe a video on the missing submarine rip….literally my worst nightmare

DUDEE your channel is growing so fast!! Literally a couple days ago your follow count was 90.1k, and you’ve already gone up 1k!! Congrats man!
Omg that underground tunnel with a foot or so of water is creepy AF! Especially with your description of the splashing 😮
I had you on my second monitor and had flashbacks to my retail jobs when you did the grocery store bit.
Always a good day when u Upload a Video 🙏 You deserve more Attention!
Much love from Germany🇩🇪🙂

I don’t know why, but I don’t really get the eerie vibe from liminal space images.
Do a video on the submersible going missing near the titanic wreckage!!
Not me having the EXACT same ceiling fan in my living room 🫡

That slide image isn't "more backrooms or poolrooms". It's a traditional pool based liminal space image, which came before the poolrooms. Pools were always popular amongst liminal spaces. Some of the most popular are real pools
I've been in real liminal spaces with pools, at least that's how I remember them. Nostalgia probably plays a huge role.

Whats your thoughts about the missing sub at the Titanic wreck?
2:20 imo this is the most disturbing horror, if you see something, you DID see it, in the dark you can tell yourself that you’re seeing things
2:54 I honestly didn't even notice the sky was photoshopped until you said that 😂😂

Liminal space & thalasophobia is my top favourite videos by greg ❤

Haha true. But imagine if the ocean was a deep red though!

@@GregBroDudeMan I just started getting into it! very unique!
That milk on the floor would freak me out. It's not the kind of thing anyone normal would leave on purpose, and it would have to be done after people left. With only those lights on, it looks like it's meant to make someone stop and investigate. Whoever did it could be hiding in the dark nearby.
itd be so cool if you did urban exploring lol even just once a month
I’ll never truly understand the meaning of liminal spaces. That’s what makes them so mysterious to me.
Fav channel
“This is where you go when you die if you have bad credit” 🤣🤣🤣
Also, talking of games, will you finish Scorn? I loved watching you play that! X
I install fences currently and can fully agree that white pvc fences have such a wrong feeling to them.
Edit:I was installing one of the pvc fences when NY was like that (6:04)
8:40 This reminds me of the kids book Corduroy
They don’t really freak me out too much but I always get a little heebie heebies when they look uncanny valley.
Also you’re great, Greg, thanks for the new phobias 🥲
My theory is liminal space makes normal people FEEL like they’re dissociating. I dissociate constantly and sometimes have episodes of derealization where everything feels like a simulation including the people around me and my own body. Basically I live inside the backrooms no matter where I go, including the constant sense of dread and being hunted 😂 I feel like since liminal/backrooms became possible everyone understands my life haha
Edit: it’s not just me, this is a common ptsd symptom and trauma response.
So close to 100k keep it up
If I ever have the money, I will build a Liminal Space filled building... or I'll just purchase an old Mall and clean it up for the same purpose.
2:35 I had a dream abt this place fr not kidding that was 4 years ago
Buffalo Bayou Park has a cistern, built in 1920-something (and holds uo to like 20,000,000 gallons), that they opened up to the public. It has some interesting optical and auditory phenomena due to how it was built.
...it flooded during hurricane Harvey, so there's that.
