Henson was the most talented QB I have ever seen. He had a cannon for an arm but could still throw with touch if needed. He was confident and athletic. When he chose to play baseball that summer I literally cried. I couldn't believe he chose baseball over a senior season as Michigan's Qb. I'm 48 now and when I hear his name it still fills me with disappointment of what could have been. He still to this day had the most potential I have seen at the qb position.

Agreed. Can you imagine if they had NIL back in his day? He never would have looked at baseball again. He would have concentrated fully on being the QB at Michigan and the program would have been real contenders for the Natty. The purest quarterback Michigan has ever seen except maybe for JJ but Drew had it all. And then there was Tom Brady behind him, a different kind of quarterback, couldn't run as well as Henson, not as athletic, but smart, great arm, leadership, and he ended up being the greatest quarterback in the game. GOAT.
Do you think he regrets it? If he had focused soley on football starting his freshman year, do you think you would have had a good NFL career?

Great RBs, great WRs... Michigan recruited as well as anyone and with Harbaugh back home I think we are in the beginning stages of a return to form of sorts for the Michigan Football Wolverines. I'm fuckin excited for the future with Harbaugh at the helm!

Christopher Roberts Good call, and quote. DT was a special player. Look at the roster of that 2000 team. Such great talent, and they still lost 3 games by maybe 5 points. That is still the last team to win in Columbus, and the Bowl game. We need to motivate Harbaugh to change that, permanently. As Tressel still parlays his Wiccan magick of the # 9. And his "collusion" with Saban, Myer and all the other anti-Michigan elements of the sports world.

Henson 2000 had the best QB rating of any UM quarterback the last 25 years, and was the last to win in Columbus until JJ last year. Couldn't believe he couldn't play somewhere in the NFL, on make it in baseball.
Is it because he didn't focus on one sport? If he had focused on one then he would have gone further in that sport?
It's too bad the sport of baseball stole this guy. Would have been a heck of a player in NFL if he just stuck with it.
Such a talented athlete... yet, only one career hit in MLB and only one career TD in the NFL. Not everyone is Bo Jackson or Deion Sanders. Especially being a QB, you have to go all-in on one sport. Who knows what would have been if he chose the NFL right away and stuck to it.

Had Drew played his senior season he probably would have been the #1 overall pick and had a great NFL career. Taking time off the try baseball and then trying to come ack just did not work. So sad to see that type of talented wasted.
I dont feel sorry for him. He made a piss poor decision. Amazing how Michigan fans fawn about his "potential" but he abandoned you only to become a colossal failure in both sports.

+John Z Hate to break it to you but Tate was perhaps the biggest loser we ever recruited. All he did was smoke weed, not workout, skip class, and get kicked off the team in his short and pathetic career. He made a website dedicated to how sweet he was before he set foot on campus. At least Manziel was good at football.

RM, there were 10 or 15 teammates of harbaugh’s a day at the drug house i hung out at, mostly buying weed but some buying coke!
some were there often just to hang out as friends of the 2 brothers who were the dealers. on mary right across from the IM. i met the dealers hooping at the IM and i’d play every day and usually go hangout there after.
i remember one of the lineman, pretty sure i remember which one, but won’t name, was writing a paper over there & i asked him what it was on & he said it was about how canham & the athletic dept treated the players like meat!
he def seemed serious in his opinion on that issue but i imagine he was kidding about that actually being the subject of his paper!! he did not like canham tho, that was clear!
Heisman favorite had he returned for senior year. He won his only start in the nfl for the Dallas Cowboys, was the starting qb for the winningest team in college football history, Michigan, and started some games in major league baseball for the NY Yankees. He is the only human who ever lived who can make that claim. Drew is also a multi millionaire.
He never became Tom Brady, nobody has. However, UM, Cowboys, and the Yankees! That is awesome. What a sports life.

He was hyped as the Next Big Thing, as a possible future GOAT. Instead, he’s a What Might Have Been. He should have been like Brady, who was also great at multiple sports. TB decided to focus on one sport only and worked his butt off through practice and film study to be the best that he could be. DH didn’t do that, relying too much on his natural athletic ability and not putting in the time and the work to be truly great at one sport. It’s doubtful that he is living the life that he expected and that he is truly happy about that. What Timothy Ernest wrote was absolute BS.

They lost three games by a combined seven points that year. And the Northwestern game...don't even get me started. How A-Train fumbled that ball with NO ONE around him is beyond me. That team, among other Michigan teams in those years, could play with anyone in the country. Still makes me angry.

Drew the stud was selected by the Yankees, who were then owned by OSU grad George Steinbrenner, in 1998. He signed a professional contract that forced him to leave the University of Michigan football team. Did Steinbrenner throw $1mm at him to keep him from playing football at Mich? I think the answer is clear.

fucking buckey steinbrenner first breaks up my beloved yankee team with randolph, chambliss, davis et al just because they lost in the playoffs after winning 103 games! that made me give up my beloved baseball after being a lifetime fan! then he signs does the same thing with jeter that he did later with henson, both times intentional! he called jeter up before he could play for michigan! i did deliver him a pizza on prospect st while he was here anyway! i also met him on the field when he was here for homecoming in ‘98 when I had a photo pass that day. i also me mini me that day, who was also on the sidelines and i almost killed him! i was on the side of the end zone shooting when the action suddenly turned my way and i had to quickly back out of the way to avoid being run over but little did i know the little man was behind me and i half smushed him and almost stepped on him!
i first saw him at halftime when i was about to go back thru the tunnel into the stadium after going to crisler where they would have hot dogs for the press at halftime and there was mini me riding in a golf cart! coincidentally right after that i see an old friend from tappan jr high (where i played fb for the same coaches harbaugh did 2 yrs after me) & pointed out mini me, so rob, the friend said hey take a pic of me with him & he ran over to ask vern, who obliged us!
then i got to talk to him on the sidelines & wondered why he was there & he said he grew up in kzoo like jeter & was a lifelong M fan! he was one of the nicest guys i ever met & i cried when he died 😢
lastly, shooting for the free football guide, in the 2 of 3 yrs i did it we got sideline photo passes but only 3 games a yr, always for crappy games except for one game against penn state, featured prominently in this video!
the best fb pic i ever took was that bj askew td down the sideline where he hurdled the dude in this vid! i was right in that spot where he did the hurdle, which from my vantage point was WAY more impressive than it looks here from the tv angle! it truly looked SPECTACULAR in my shot!

I remember the Syracuse game in '98. Brady had a bad day, and was pulled by Carr. When Brady went out, the score was 38-7. After Henson came in, things changed quickly. He led three scoring drives (two Walter Cross rushing TDs and a Henson TD pass to Marcus Knigh). The three scores all came in the final seven minutes of the 4th quarter. Final score: 38-28. That was one of the most impressive quarters (half-quarter actually) of M football as I have ever seen, especially in a loss.
yeah but in garbage time of one of the biggest blowout losses in M history, final score not at all reflective of how badly we were beaten. macnabb just KILLED US!

as a diehard UM fan and a baseball hater, i agree. but, if you're guaranteed millions to play a game, or get injured while playing for free at college, it's hard to pass up the money

Baseball's a lot safer, more lucrative, and you have a much higher chance of being a functional adult until your 80s. I personally wouldn't mind being called a loser with $80 million in the bank and be pretty damn healthy in my 70s, compared to $7 million, with a high chance of memory loss/cognitive issues and disability in my 50s

Bradshaw, Staubach, Tarkenton, Jaworski, Montana, Simms, Esiason, Young and many other QBs are doing fine. How does Henson compare to Willis and Kuechly at all? They were dominant "All Pro" Linebackers who retired due to injuries and concerns, Henson was a guy who gave up his best sport to play baseball for some early money and ultimately flamed out of both sports. I am almost certain that the boosters provided for Henson. He was far from destitute. One more year and he is a top 3 pick in the sport best suited for him. Greed and shortsightedness did him in. Athletes dont enter competition worry about getting hurt. Thats how you get hurt.

Drew had all the tools to become a great NFL quarterback,size,pocket presence while also having the mobility to move out of the pocket and make the kind of throws that separates the good qb's from the great ones.Had he declared for the 2001 NFL DRAFT he would have been the No.1 overall pick.Had he returned for his senior year,it would have been a special season for Michigan.
Such a shame that he chose to play baseball which never panned out and then tried to come back to football and was never the same.

There are many similarities, between myself and Drew: he was born on 2-13-80. The same night I was intiated into an unwanting fraternity in Tuscaloosa, AL. Known as the SAEs. His passer rating was 135, which is the same as my Wechsler adult intelligence scale score, after I lost my temper with some "gold dust hippies", and a cowboy from Highland park Tx. On a cold night in January, of 1993. Now T Town needs to understand the symbolism of 2631.
2631 was the endind point of Alabama's winning sreak. They won 26 straight games, and put up 31 points in a loss to Clemson, from my home state of South Carolina. Now they have to deal with the rage of not only Daniel Drew, born on 2-13-80. But of course myself, who was intiated into a fucking group of guys in Feb. of 1992 on 2-13 that Tuscaloosa will never fucking threaten.

Daniel Drew in many ways is the younger brother that I never had. I am sure that he is quite familiar with a srange guy from, South Carolina, who was born in Ann Arbor, on 11-5-71. Who was raised by his dad, and who also played a MEAN PINBALL MACHINE, down in the basement of my mothers house, up in Pinkney, MI. "From Soho, down to Brighton, The Who had never seen anything like that before.
The greatest talent at quarterback, that UM has ever known. I hope he works with Wilton Speight, of Richmond, Virginia. And of course,....Jimmy Harbaugh. A man who will always know the rule of 4!!!

I played baseball & football against Drew while he was @ Brighton, dude was a beast. If only he'd chosen Football over Baseball, he could have been one of the greats.
He could have been one of the greats in baseball or football had he concentrated fully on one sport and not tried to do two. Brady had been a Bay Area phenom in Little League baseball and had been drafted by the Montreal Expos. But he decided he wanted to play football and worked hard to make himself the best he could be at that sport. Bo Jackson could have been great in football or baseball but he tried to do both. That ultimately didn’t work out well for him. Or for Drew Henson.
@@thomashong2938 Completely agree. We were playing in a tournament against him & my best friend from high school threw him a hanging curve. Drew hit it literally 500 ft to dead center field. Farthest I've seen a baseball travel to this day.

Dallas Cowboys, backing up Tony Romo and Drew Bledsoe. Then, Minnesota Vikings, practice squad. Finally, Detroit Lions, mostly practice squad but spent time on active roster. Released for the last time when Detroit drafted Matthew Stafford.

Henson, like a lot of Baseball players was a gifted thrower, but he wasn't a passer and there is a huge difference. Tom Brady was a passer and as you've been able to see during his career, passers often have far more success in the pros than throwers who can fire a laser down the field.
Cannon for an arm but he was overrated. He was the one read quarterback. If that read wasn't there he would be in trouble or run. That's why he didn't pan out in the NFL . And don't forget Michigan had some studs at wide receiver at that time. Who would fight for the ball to make a play. See what he did in the NFL when he didn't have the weapons on the outside. He did nothing. I don't understand Lloyd carrs thinking . How many games where Henson didn't do anything. And Brady would have to save the day ie that's y they called Brady the come back kid.

Jam City I don’t know I always thought it was more of a mental thing with Henson. He had all of the talent in the world in his body. Cannon arm, accuracy, size, scrambling ability but I question the desire to be great. The guy was caught between two sports where he had great physical ability in both. But the second he was challenged to step up his game in either sport through hard work he bolted to either the other sport or retired.

Henson ended up hurting Michigan in more ways than not returning to play his senior year. To start Michigan wasn't 'allowed' to recruit any other QBs as a concession to Henson upon his commitment to the team. The other way was during Brady's final year in 1999. Had Lloyd stuck with Brady all season that team had the potential to have one of those historic seasons people talk about for years afterwards but Lloyd felt as though he had to give Henson opportunities to play even though they had an experienced and more than capable Tom Brady.
Just think had Drew played his senior yr we would've won the Nat'l title and he would've been a 1st rd pick in the draft....but that baseball money was calling.

Jerry Jones was the only reason that Henson was on the Cowboys roster. He had a sentimental streak for former baseball players who had switched to football.

How many games did they start him, and then have Brady come in to try and save the game? Eventually benching him completely. and starting Brady. He failed in Dallas and bombed in Detroit. He got his shot in baseball, when that didnt pan out, he got his shot in the NFL 0-16 at Detroit. Brady could of led the Wolverines to a National championship is given a real chance. Still Hensen got to play to professional sports , which is nothing to scoff at. But he was terribly overrated. Good enough to play, but not enough to stay.
Great analysis, the mental side had to enter in somewhere. Maybe Henson wasn't as confident once he got to the NFL and realized that he couldn't instantly/easily dominate people. He landed on some NFL rosters that weren't that great. Henson has as much talent as anyone and given the right set of circumstances he would have fared alot better. There were plenty of NFL quarterbacks with less talent then Henson who had successful pro carers.

This is what I could have been at Conway High School, in South Carolina had they not hated me as a "Yankee" and of course, the blacks just thought that I was a soft "white boy". +BigBlueBri I don't have enough footage to give them proper tributes. I stopped recording games the last few years out of disgust. The offensive line gave Gardner no protection and he got sacked about 500 times as a result.
I'm sorry. I love both players but I really lost my passion for recording games because the last several years have been so awful. Even the wins under RichRod and Hoke were so ugly, so awful that I decided to get rid of the majority of them. Other than the rivalry wins and a few others, there's not much else that I would ever want to go back and relive.
