you may want to know that the og translation was done by Atlus. this one was done today by NIS and it probably costed more than the og game because theres still voice acting in english that was absent in the og beside the song and the cost of voices in games have gone up dramatically, also, nis was always way smaller than Atlus and its even more the case now that SEGA is behind Atlus nowadays. All of this to say, yeah, they have missed there, but the context is important, and also, not sure that added cost would have made these games sales that much more, they are niche titles.
more so when NIS does it when they are very small compare to so many others... i mean, only xseed marvelous is as big. just checked that Marvelous is still majorly independant, and is only 20% own by tencent
I Preordered The Physical Copy Rhapsody Marl Kingdom Chronicles Limited Edition For My Nintendo Switch Oled And Paid For Over Night Shipping I Hope I Get The Game Before Release Date Because I Am Going To Upload Both Of The Games On My YT Channel In 1080p 60 FPS. And The Whole World Needs To Know About Rhapsody The Game Is A Game And Will Most Likely be Ultra In A 3-4 Years.
Kinda sad that they don't have the songs in English. I can still sing all of the songs from Rhapsody. "Whenever I hear this song I really don't know why. It makes me shed a little tear" Damn NOSTALGIA OVERLOAD 😢 One of my and my sis most favorite RPG growing up.
You worked in a 2 girls 1 cup reference into a Rhapsody review? Sicko! That being said, nice work. I’ll join your Patreon if you can somehow work Cakefarts into something.
It's great to see these old rpgs with never got finally come over here. I emulated the first game a while back and enjoyed what I played. so I was already sold on this collection. Also at 5:40 I thought we all were supposed to forget about that video 😂.
Its nice to get more info on how the new battle systems work because I knew the original had a more traditional tactical turn based system and I was really intrigued by how different it looked in the sequels
The "I can't understand the songs so who cares" and "I fast forwarded through them all" is such a weird complaint. The songs sounded pretty awful in English in the original game, and why the hate towards Japanese? Of course you're not going to grow attached to the songs or enjoy them if you fastforward through them. Think about it this way, even if you don't know the language you can still appreciate the quality and tonality of the singing and the voice acting. Plus that's how the songs were originally created by Tenpei Sato, isn't it better to get the intended experience rather than having English VAs try to sing and butcher them? It just kind of feels like complaining just for the sake of complaining and not taking things as they are and giving them a chance. If you fold your arms and go "I hate this because it's not what I'm used to!" then you're never going to be satisfied with it no matter how good it is.
I'm looking forward to diving right back into the world of Rhapsody when this comes out! I've got some waiting to do before some other games come out that I'm looking forward to and I've been dying to see what the characters are up to in these next two games. A shame the songs aren't in English for sure but this sort of music isn't my favorite anyways so I'll be okay to give them a quick listen and never again lol. Thanks for your hard work as always, David!
I missed Rhapsody when it first came out and have heard many good things about it since. I think I'll check out your story summary of the first one and maybe get these two sequels. :)
Sooo glad to finally have the Marl Kingdom Chronicles finally reach stateside, dood! Being the big Disgaea fan that I am (and everything else within the multiverse), I've had the biggest fascination with the Marl Kingdom sequels for years. You've no idea how I feel to finally be playing them. It's kinda everything I'd hoped for them to be, and I can proudly say that I've experienced and now own every major title within the Disgaea multiverse thus far... with D7 coming soon, lol.
Rhapsody II does actually have a synopsis feature, in the journal. It recaps each story event so you can figure out what to do next when coming back to the game. Also, if you think Rhapsody II and III are mazelike, Rhapsody I is the king of mazes. I found II and III's dungeons to be a breath of fresh air in comparison. I don't think the game needed the ability to turn encounters off, but the ability to increase the speed of battles would have been nice. The complaint about autosaves seems weird when you can literally save whenever you want in the game.
Still looking super forward to this, though yeah, I'm really disappointed to hear they didn't dub the songs, especially since in this day and age, they could easily find better actors. This is especially disappointing considering that one song in the Live-A-Live remaster was dubbed as were the opera scenes in the FF6 Pixel Remaster. If you're gonna add English voice acting options, the least you can do is have the English VAs sing. This is just like when I watched the dub for One Piece Film Red, as while I did greatly enjoy the film, I was so disappointed that they got an actual singer to provide the English voice of a idol character and still had the songs in Japanese. This was so weird since typically when characters sing in the dub, it's dubbed into English. That said, I'm intrigued by the battle system. This was one thing I liked better about the DS version of the first one, as on top of being traditional turn-based, it was also more challenging and therefor more satisfying.
I feel lucky to have got my Limited Edition today. Isn't releasing until next Friday over here in Europe. So much extra stuff bundled in with the Limited Edition. Was definitely worth it.
Geeze you got me again. I fought off all your attempts to get me to pick up this title but you broke me down again. First silent hope and now this.On another note, since I do not live in the states I couldnt use your amazon link without incurring extra costs. Is there a way to use your referral but using my home country amazon website?
I've never played any of the Rhapsody games (I was more focused on the Disgaea and La Pucelle series) but this review has convinced me to give the first game a shot.
I have been waiting for this game all summer, counting the days down now!! Hilarious lighthearted rpgs are my favorite and I’m excited to see what happens after the first one!
When Rhapsody first came to the US, I had it PS1 because I was looking for anime based games (my brother got me into RPGS with Final Fantasy 7). And I believe that game is what got me into the Idol genre of anime (Love Live, Idol Master.. etc) And yes, I did preorder this, and I refuse to open it. Instead, I'm buying it TWICE. The second will be on my Switch OLED digitally while the physical copy sits nicely on my shelf. And when I played it back on the PSP (its still installed), I did catch onto the yuri-ish theme of Crea and Kururu. But i was actually hoping for her to go with Cello mostly because I felt their interactions were so funny.
I don’t think I can agree with the musical side of things as, remember, these were only Japanese releases back in the day. So, it’s justified for it to still be just Japanese vocal tracks. Either way, it’s such a superficial aspect that I don’t think it should fully draw back from the experience of the game itself.
Once I finish Pikmin 4 I should really play my copy of Rhapsody 1 on Switch. The Playstation and DS versions always evaded me, lost many bids on eBay 😅 but just hearing these sequels we never got are out next week? I have some catching up to do.
I definitely want to try these games, but with the backlog of games I'm already in the middle of and Sea of Stars right around the corner, it's gonna be a while
My mouth hit the floor when I saw the pic of u in bed on the cruise ship how did u not get 1 million likes yet is beyond me u must be the fittest gamer on earth
Hey David... off topic here on Rhapsody but I was looking through some of the recent vids and couldn't find/remember what vid had that ridiculous long named jrpg in it.. could you please let me know the name ( abbreviated if you want lol ) and the release date?
Damn these games look charming, awesome sprites. As for the songs not being in english, I can enjoy the way music sounds without having to know they're talking about, it can still have a pleasing melody - often I PREFER it when they're in another language, since lyrics are basically telling you exactly what the song is about and what to think instead of me enjoying the music thinking about it for myself. Imagine if FF7's One Winged Angel was in English, it would be so bad. Understanding the lyrics doesn't always make things better.
I can understand where he’s coming from with the English songs. I played the first one as a child and it had English songs which I really liked. Now playing the sequels it’s going to take some getting use to after playing the first one with English voice over for songs -.-
"All the songs are in Japanese." Oh yeah, a MUSICAL adventure where they didn't dub the songs. They chose the path of Cowardice/Cheapness/Both. Really dig the Squad combat, that's neat.
I’ve been such a huge fan of Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure since I first rented it at Blockbuster as a kid. As a young gay weeb, obsessed with Sailor Moon and anything anime; this was like nectar to me. I learned of the sequels online later in my youth via gamefaqs, and was so sad they never got localized. The DS version of Rhapsody gave me hope that they might come to the west… I’ve had the deluxe version of Marl Kingdom Chronicles pre-ordered for my Switch since it was available on Amazon. Putting off watching this vid until after I play it, but wanted to comment for the algorithm. Thank you, David- you’ve been a much needed voice for the LGBTQ JRPG fans on YT. I always look forward to your vids. 💯🫵🫶

Definitely going to pick these up on Steam. Have to support companies porting and translating their classics on modern systems.
Same

Just FYI you can buy Rhapsody 1 for the switch as well. It's included in Prinny presents NIS classics volume 3.
That's what I'm going to do
its good if you dont mind not having the singing
and la pucelle comes with VOL 3, la pucelle being the 4th game.
You had me at "Pumpkin Pants".
Same, I was like Pumpkin 🎃 Pants 👖
You do not know how jealous I am that you have these games. I'm REALLY excited for this!

Homegirl pulled out the desert eagle 😮
Love from Belgium 🇧🇪 ❤. Glad you liked it
You worked in a 2 girls 1 cup reference into a Rhapsody review? Sicko! That being said, nice work. I’ll join your Patreon if you can somehow work Cakefarts into something.
Two Girls, One Cup Inspiration should be the video title 😊
Still better than the Tales of Symphonia "Remaster" we got earlier this year. That was just embarrassing Bamco.
It's great to see these old rpgs with never got finally come over here. I emulated the first game a while back and enjoyed what I played. so I was already sold on this collection. Also at 5:40 I thought we all were supposed to forget about that video 😂.
I can’t believe he said that 😂
Ahhh I’m so jealous you got to play it early I’ve been waiting since child hood for these sequels so excited I finally get to play them!
I don't HAVE a PS5/Switch and its NOT going to get a PS4 version AT all.
Bro, you're the last person i expected to drop a 2 girls one Cup reference in a video 😂😂 im laughing so damn hard
I preordered this the moment it came available. The wait is almost over!
Man I just love coming across some beautiful, retro pixel art happy JRPG series I had never heard of before
Its nice to get more info on how the new battle systems work because I knew the original had a more traditional tactical turn based system and I was really intrigued by how different it looked in the sequels
Yeah it’s pretty much turn based goodness:)
Cats pooping ice-cream are the best! 😂
I lost my mind at that part😂😂
I understood that cup reference 😄

Insane to launch it the same day as Sea of Stars

Can't wait for my copy to arrive. Enjoyed playing the Japanese versions years back and glad to finally play them in English!
I missed Rhapsody when it first came out and have heard many good things about it since. I think I'll check out your story summary of the first one and maybe get these two sequels. :)
Got mine preordered
I might pick this up. A musical JRPG would be a brand new experience to me. Something different

So will Rhapsody 2 and Rhapsody 3 have a new game plus mode after you beat the game where you can keep all your levels stats and weapons?
Best motivational speech “If you don’t take charge, you will DIE.” 🫡

Kinda hard to miss with a thumbnail lile that 😅

Oh I’m not sure about that :(
I just preordered this I’m such a sucker man. But I have to support NIS America and what they keep alive for us.
Recently started working on the original Rhapsody in preparation for these to come out! I'm excited!
I've never played any of the Rhapsody games (I was more focused on the Disgaea and La Pucelle series) but this review has convinced me to give the first game a shot.
I bought this after watching your review. Looks right up my alley. Thank you 😊
“When you die Youl have to go back to the title screen, like reload from your last save” 😂. God forbid 🤣
Me: "oh nice this sounds like a fun little series to get into"
Me at 5:39 👋😐🔫
yooo what is your diet like straight shredded haha goodjob!

I wish there was a rhapsody 1 review from you
So glad i got the limited edition! P.s. must be nice to be buff and playing JRPGS 😊😅
Any performance issues? Gonna pick it up on the switch, then I can keep the entire trilogy on one system:)
Nothing at all that I noticed :)

Picked up Prinny V2 for Rhapsody and will eventually get this
Wait!! Rhapsody had sequels?! I played Rhapsody when it first came over to America and I thought it was one and done.
Glad to see these officially localized and translated to the west minus the songs!

Thank you for this, I needed a distraction after the passing of Bray Wyatt and Terry Funk |-(
the third game is so short , i just finished the game after safing the mushroom mom , it was just like two hours long.
Hey David... off topic here on Rhapsody but I was looking through some of the recent vids and couldn't find/remember what vid had that ridiculous long named jrpg in it.. could you please let me know the name ( abbreviated if you want lol ) and the release date?
It was one of the news videos and I believe it’s called Monyu

Is it necessary to play the first game to be able to understand the story for this?
Great review!

I'll assume u didn't like what I put ill delete what I said I might have overheated you lol
Sorry dude . I don't like auto save...
Too bad the songs are in Japanese!
