Greatest respect to you Mr Lustenhouwer for sharing your process for free. Not many artists around would do this. Things like this are very helpful to people like me who are learning these aspects of art.
C'est merveilleux de vous voir peindre! J'ai énormément appris, maintenant, il me reste a essayer de mettre en pratique ce que vous m'avez appris. Merci infiniment
This is exquisite. Thank you for posting. It has inspired me to try the oils for a figure study. I love how you use a small palette of colors and mix lots of tones... it doesn't seem overwhelming. This is truly wonderful to watch... Music is very nice too... very gentle.
It is impossible for the lower middle class in some Asian countries to buy such a good lesson with the equivalent of foreign money. So many many thanks Master for helping with these free lessons. 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you very much for sharing this (and all of your) video. You have a friend from Hungary, who's been painting for some 50 years. And can learn a lot from you.
I'm gonna start my first portrait after this tut and I'm sure I'm gonna outdone myself this time and thanks to you for your generosity , few Artists share kind of knowledge for free
Huge thanks! I have watched many UA-cam tutorials and I have to say, I loved, loved, loved your many tips and explanations along the way. Much appreciated! So generous of you x
My wife & I are thoroughly "Enjoying" your "Mentoring"! We appreciate your patience in showing us each stroke in normal speed with explanation of the making up of the color palate in use on the different zones. We absolutely consider you to be a 'Master' in your field and we look forward to learning as much as possible.
Thank you! You have a wonderful way of communicating and simplifying the language of a painting. Her skin sings and her eyes just draw you in, it’s lovely piece of art.
This is amazing. A lot of people are going to be making much better artwork because of your generosity and hard work. I heard a quote recently attributed to Edgar Degas where he said something along the lines of "A real artist is one who inspires other people". That definitely applies to you. Thank you and take care.
Omg that is so true, just look at bob ross. He hangs in the Smithsonian now, and as much as his style is easy to do, and people might argue that his art is not high art, he was still a master of it. Anyway, I can't draw for jack and know little about how to mix colors etc, but bob ross got me into oil painting, and the rate at which you progress..like just paint the same painting two or three times and you will see a rapid improvement. Just start with the instructional video which teaches you how to load the brush and knife properly and how to press the brush into the canvas etc because that is really important, but yeah...I agree completely.
some day in the future, I'll be able to complete a beautiful portrait like this in just 2hrs and 19 minutes. This was very informative to watch. Thanks you!!
I follow a few artists here in youtube. And always considered your work a class apart from all others. Somehow your painting gives the model a kind of inner glow. So your work is not just an exact replica/ alternative of a mere photograph. Somewhere your choice of colors and strokes add a whole new dimension to the model. I don't have words to express how much I admire and respect your artwork. Never thought we would have a free tutorial here. Just cannot thank you enough for your generosity Sir. Also thank you for sharing the little words of wisdom, "if it is worth painting, it is worth planning", "keep your kitchen clean".... They apply to all aspects of life ! Thank you so much and sending you warmest wishes for good health and peace.
Thanks a million for sharing your experience and many tips that not many masters share with all their expertise as have you these days. Greetings from Mexico
Notably, I look like you, or you look something like me. I am not a portrait painter, people's pets, yes! I have a need to paint people with my pets, so you are perfect! I paint with good quality acrylics as oils bother my asthma such that I can no longer work in that lovely medium. I am into my early 80's so painting is becoming my main amusement in life. I was a draftsman, then teacher of Engineering type drawing, a building inspector and scissors sharpener. Of which I still sharpen and paint. I just love the way you talk as you paint. I could watch you for hours. You have prepared so very well your painting presentation.
Thank you for this. There are so many snippets of tutorials or sped up clips on UA-cam - it's great to see one complete start-to-finish, and at a speed where you can follow what is happening. Your relaxed style really helps with imparting the information. And, of course, it doesn't hurt that you are so good at what you do :)
Your generosity in sharing your great talent and knowledge is a wonderful gift to artists and art lovers. I believe the journey for any artist is an ongoing process of learning. Thank you for making the days of confinement so much more tolerable. Your brother-in-laws music is the magic touch to a peaceful presentation.
Dear Mr. Lustenhouwer, It's a wonderful tutorial and demonstration. Many, many thanks for your excellent explanations. Its a marvelous work and I will be going through again to find anything I missed.
Thank you for showing your whole process and thoughts. I've been painting on my own for three years and this really filled in some blanks for me. And, you are very easy to listen to!
Thank you very much for this, sir. It is going to be really helpful for many new artist like me. i personally want to see a video about mediums and their proper use in painting OR a video about how u clean and care your brushes. Love from Bangladesh.
Thank you so much. This video at a normal speed with all those perfect and clear explications are a great gift. The use of the colors and theirs combinations seems to me even more usefull than the paint. A big lesson to progress. Thank you for sharing your time. You are a painter and a teacher
Thank you, Mr Lustenhouwer for generously sharing your talents. Remote art tutor from South Africa here. I would like to share your very informative tutorials with my students to improve their painting techniques
que maravilloso proceso, Ben , es un video descansado, simple y claro. La música de fondo es muy agradable y tu voz van acompasando tu pincel y los hermosos colores que has elegido. Sólo un gran agradecimiento por este nuevo video. He empezado esta cuarentena a estudiar contigo. Me agrada de sobremanera
I'd like to add my thanks to all the others you have received for this and all your other tutorials.you are very generous with your time and I'm guessing that is because you want to give back some of what you feel art has given you, everyone who watches can't fail to learn many thanks again.
Thank you so much for such a wonderful demo. It was fascinating to watch your process and so generous of you to share this with others. I have learnt so much
We love the music ! It fits perfectly to enhance the thinking process. It relaxes us to take in your reasoning process of lights & darks and where you put something when you put something! Please continue to teach us. We love your slow methodical method. We learn so much more this way !
Thank you SO much for posting a full length demo!! I’ve been wishing you would do one for years!! Please let us know if Will Sophie’s music is available for purchase somewhere, I always love hearing it while you paint! Stay well...post often!!
Este es el Mejor video acerca de los retratos que he visto en toda Internet. Muchas gracias, un gran talento y una enorme generosidad de compartir con miles de personas.
Amazing gesture, thank you so much Ben! This will help me out a lot. Also I wanted to let you know your pronunciation of stingy is wrong. The G is said as a J. However when it comes to videos and sharing your artistic knowledge you are certainly not stingy!
That is truly brilliant sir. I'm wondering if you used any mediums during the process. Or maybe at chapter 23 for the dress? By the way It's really hard to capture the likeness while trying to maintain the abstraction and that painterly brushwork. One can easily bogged down in the details and make the painting tighter and duller. Could you teach more about this aspect? Thank you so much!
Wonderful music, wonderful art, wonderful voice over, really annoying clock ticking in the background in some scenes. Who else was screaming at the screen after 2:00:00 for him to stop tinkering. LOL. Excellent work sir and so many thanks
Your comments sharing with us your thoughts every step of the way make things a lot easier to understand and to digest. Thank you for that Ben. Amazing work!
Teaching is a priceless act of love. Thanks for being so generous.

Thank you. I did not know that. Again sometihng to pay attention to.
Your patience is greatly appreciated, Ben, for these two long hours of work. Excellent!!
Thank you.
Hoi Ben, geweldige video! Het is erg informatief om het gehele proces te zien. Heb je ook tips voor het werken met acryl?
Dank je. In het verleden heb ik wel geschilderd in acryl maar ik weet te weinig van de techniek om er over te kunnen vetrellen.
So grateful for your generosity.
Thank you
That was really great. Thank you. Could you please state the size of this canvas?
50 x 40 cm.
superb teacher .
thanks
That is truly brilliant sir. I'm wondering if you used any mediums during the process. Or maybe at chapter 23 for the dress?
By the way It's really hard to capture the likeness while trying to maintain the abstraction and that painterly brushwork.
One can easily bogged down in the details and make the painting tighter and duller. Could you teach more about this aspect? Thank you so much!
I diluted the paint of the dress with turps and tried to let it run.
life painting is so expensive now allmost easier to learn from home
Wonderful music, wonderful art, wonderful voice over, really annoying clock ticking in the background in some scenes. Who else was screaming at the screen after 2:00:00 for him to stop tinkering. LOL. Excellent work sir and so many thanks
Thank you. The clock is in my studio. You cannot have it all.
Amazing eye for color and light.
Fantastic tutorial.
Thank you John.
Ben, you are a master of capturing a moment with as few brush strokes as possible. Great work.
Thank you.
Really Master...great and so easy explanation...thank you
my pleasure.
Thank you for your generosity. His effort to transmit his knowledge is truly admirable.
Thank you Antonio.
Thanks for your generous spirit and beautiful art.
