Fascinating how you paint so loosely and with bold colors. I am struggling with being a slave to the refence image and muting the colors so I lose all vibrancy in my work. I want to achieve a more painterly look.
Thanks Jay. Play around with some bright tube colors and the biggest brush you have and just go for it. It may seem crazy at first, but it is about exploring possibilities. 💯
Really learn so much by watching your creative approach. And your relaxed voice and manner make it also very calming Glad I came upon your art. Thank you
Thanks for the nice demo Malcolm. I have only started to use oils a few months ago and have been badly affected by breathing the solvents. However, liking the oil painting so much , I decided not to quit and banished all solvents except, of course, the paints, to another room and always work with very good ventilation. These water based "oils" ( still can not understand how oil and water can mix?) might just be my solution! I also share your frustration with masking tape! The quality has clearly been deteriorating lately !! I might be mistaken but I am quite sure it was better in previous times.
Thanks for sharing your tips. I have a problem you may be able to assist me with. I sprayed solvent based clear sealer over my painting. I now want to paint over it. How can I remove the sealer?
Depends on the sealer. Is it made for paintings or is it some sort of hardware store sealer? If for paintings you may be able to use a conservators product to carefully remove it.
I love your style of painting. I often struggle with looseness. I am wondering if you use any type of medium in your acrylics to keep them from drying too fast.
Awwww!! What a Special treat! A study in acrylics to close off the "year", yay!!! So awesome, thank you so much! Just wondering: the choice of using magenta in place of alizarin...any particular reason? I found it interesting...
Beautiful ! Thanks for the inspiration. I will try to paint this snow scene. What a great subject to say buy to 2020 and welcome 2021 - with colorful happy notes ! “Happy New year”🎉
As long as the paper is thick and not absorbent - you can gesso paper or card and it will be fine for oils. I like the smooth surface and find it less work than painting on canvas. Also primed panels of MDF are excellent to paint on.

Agreed. These oils will be the answer for you. Yes the tape brands are very bad now.
if you work on paper do you mount it on board later?
I use a few options - mounting on board and varnish, or matte and glass depending on the look I want.

Pleasure, thanks 👍
Gorgeous. It's winter here in western Canada and I am so inspired by your work.
Thank you Natalie. Hope you get some painting time.
That is really super, great to see you work the colours, from Frances uk
Thank you Frances
Love this 😎 you get such a juicy look with your acrylics

Inspiring
I love your style of painting. I often struggle with looseness.
I am wondering if you use any type of medium in your acrylics to keep them from drying too fast.
Thank you. No mediums of any sort. Acrylics are best direct from the tube. No water either, just keep them at full strength.
@@MalcolmDewey My palette dries out so quickly i have to stop and clean it. Its very warm where I live usually in the low 80s.
I Love this! Thank you for sharing!
it's a pleasure!
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE ❤️❤️❤️
And to you 💯
Can I use your photo as reference for practice? will tag you in IG when I’m done painting it.
A very interesting and informative lesson.
Much appreciated.
Great explanation!! Happy New Year to everyone !!🎊🎉
can phathlo blue work instead of cobalt blue
Yes but it does require careful mixing. It is very transparent and powerful. You may need a touch of orange to knock it back slightly. Test it out.
Thank you will keep at it😁
Beautiful! Thank you for your lovely painting demonstrations. Your work is inspiring.
Thank you so much Joan

Thank you Marina. This is a student range and did not have alizarin. Magenta is the next best 🙃
I love the colors and the looseness of your painting. Which I have trouble with. Thank you. Have a happy, healthy new year everyone.🙏🎉
Thank you, best wishes to you too!

Thank you Kamlesh - Happy new year!
I want to learn to paint in acrylics. Thank you for sharing your expertise 🙏
Pleasure!
Is it easier to start painting with oils on oil paint paper? I mean is it easier to do wet on wet on paper as compared to canvas?

@@MalcolmDewey Thank you so much!
