Really great video dealing with mistakes I seem to make all the time. I will have to watch it every time I paint to remind me not to get stuck on the details before blocking in the main structure of the painting. Many thanks, Malcolm!
The transformation from the reference is incredible. Those dabs of light, changing a plain looking tree trunk into something so vibrant is the work of sheer genius. I just cant help wondering - "How do you do it?!" Each and every video is packed with so many nuggets of info of an extremely high level. thank you so much.
It turned out so well with the help of rigorous perseverance (and skill). You do a great service to those of us who are much earlier on the journey by showing your difficulties, sometimes we need reminding it happens to the people we look up to. It does help very much with managing our own ups and downs.
Wow Malcolm! What a turn around through persistence. The painting turned out beautifully! This was so encouraging to me because usually I only see your great successes. Now I realize that I am not alone in making those exact same mistakes that I often make, including not being in the right frame of mind when I sit down to paint. That’s possibly the worst mistake that I make, because it is very hard to produce something worthwhile when you start out in that mindset. Thank you for sharing!
What a great and super-helpful video! Thank you so much for showing how your corrections took a painting that wasn't working to one that absolutely sings!
Wow -what a transformation! I’m new to oil painting and I recognize the mistakes in my own work especially after watching this video. I appreciate the help you shared here for how to fix instead of abandoning it. Thank you! 🙏
It turned out to be a lovely painting! You walked us through the mistakes and the end result is amazingly beautiful. Thank you Malcolm for this very useful demo.
I particularly liked this video as it inspired me to carry on with a painting which just wasn't working - I'd got bogged down with the details, to the detriment of the composition and also my colours were very drab and sludgy. Having worked on it again, paying attention to the lights and shades and freshening up the colours, it is beginning to look like something - very happy!😅
Very helpful video. Even helpful you seeing struggling with this work...realises me that it happens to every artist. I start often to soon with the details, specially when i make a drawing first with details in it. Then i'm afraid to paint them away and forget how to do it. Maybe then a good idea to make a foto of it, so i can check it again when i paint it in.....
Malcolm, I really enjoyed and learned from this demo, you are a great artist and pedagogue to boot. I have a question for you. Just a few days ago I toned a 30”x36” canvas with cobalt blue with the intention of painting a fall scene. It didn’t take me long to realize it was a wrong color. Should I keep the canvas , quite expensive here, for a spring scene or paint over it in sienna & ocre for my autumn composition ? Thanks
Malcolm: Your final painting is nicer than the photo! Question: If toning the whole canvas with Burnt Sienna instead of using white, would the painting color turn out a bit different?
I do believe so. It could even influence your value relationships, saturation of color and so on. How you react to a color as it goes onto the toned surface is important.
That turned out to be a really beautiful painting Malcolm. Can I ask if you had done one of your big brush small one go sketches that you showed us to do the other day, before you started on the main painting? Just wondering as you said your mind wasn’t on the painting. Thank you for showing us how not be beaten and persevere at a later stage when the paint is dry, ( and when one can properly focus) 😘
No, I jumped right in because the reference looked so good. Also, I was distracted by other things going on, so it really was not a great start, to say the least.
@@MalcolmDewey 😂 so you see, your lessons are teaching us so very much, I do that far too often not doing studies, it certainly pays off! Great to see you learning from your own lessons, which teaches us in turn. Thanks for your always welcome demos!😘
Thank you - I was taken with the scene and perhaps my planning was not thorough enough. Most importantly, I started poorly, and that mistake kept me from getting into the flow.
as a less experience painter, does it ever help to walk away and let it dry a bit to decrease the muddiness mess? Did you use any medium or straight oil painting?
No mediums were used. Yes, there are times when letting the painting rest for a day or two can help to settle the paint. I only leave a painting to dry unfinished if it is really a bad situation because resuming over a dry painting usually results in an entirely new painting. Another tip is to rather start in acrylics for the initial block in. Let that dry then go over with oils. Example: ua-cam.com/video/aFrdOwHnsNQ/v-deo.htmlsi=6pO_oHhKsLa-IKn7
Really helpful to think in terms of 'making the shadows colourful'. Another great demo, thank you.
You are so welcome!

I so admire your paintings and your gentle manner!!

What a difference, I could never imagine you doing a bad painting, but the corrections sure made it beautiful.
Oh yes there are plenty, but mistakes guide us too 😉
Your videos are so helpful and a true delight to my soul ❤
Thank you very much!
A timely tutorial that I exactly need before working on my next subject.
Glad this helped, thanks
Excellent demo! Walking away seems to be a good thing when things aren’t working. I so like the fixed version!
Totally agree! Thanks

Yes, both suggestions sound good. Remove any distracting impastos, if relevant, and let the painting dry before starting the new painting. Good luck!
