The funniest thing about these streams is that the occurences that he found were actually super rare in the grand scheme of things...and he stumbled into basically all of them without even realizing it.
He played the game long enough.

Unfortunately the game has been abandoned in early access with not even a peep from the developer in... 7 months, from what I can tell. And the reviews don't paint a great picture about what the game is like right now, at the very least Joel was able to make it a wonderful experience.

I don't know why but the fact that it's aliens, out of all things, that terrifies Joel is beyond hilarious to me. Not spiders, not snakes, not horrifying flesh abominations, but aliens.

This series was the perfect storm. It's an incredibly well-designed game being played by a person with the EXACT fear that game is trying to exploit, with a chat that knew how to make it even worse. This was such a joy to be a part of.

What this video doesn't include is Joel discussing how he once witnessed something in the skies that put fundamental fear and dread of this exact scenario in him. All the screaming and carrying on is the most genuinely afraid I've heard him in 8 years of watching his streams.

he explained that he's just irrationally afraid of gray aliens, not everything that comes from outer space specifically

It seems like he intentionally made this edit more joke-y. It's nice that it means that both this and the fan highlights are well worth watching, for different reasons: this gives you a sillier version of the biggest moments, while the fan ones give you more of the atmosphere and actual signal simulating (which was most of the full streams).

I like the increased desperation to escape, at 5:17, when Joel notices the UFO.
Honestly best part about the streams is how tense it is. Sitting there for hours, hearing Joel talk, music, funny hahas then something just pops up. A door opens, weird noise, something on the cams etc. But so subtle. This game utilizes paranoia so well, you make the fear for yourself. I'm probably not as terrified as you but the streams are so unnerving it's insane. Love it. Hope you stream this again one day, I know you're waiting for VR support, but Joel but I'm scared you'll get an actual heartattack if you ever do that.

I think in reality the people working at these facilities are a) not alone and b) have security.
Just about everyone who works at places like this such as the Very Large Array, which SS is heavily based on, is an engineer or scientist so I'm fairly certain the pay is good regardless.

For some unknown reason, the signal simulator streams are the only long Joel streams I've watched.
I'm not usually willing to put up with more than 4 hours for a stream (besides Jerma) but for some reason I was captivated by these streams. Probably the probe I got back in 13' forcing me to gather info on it but I still enjoyed it.
