MACAVALANCHE - Scotland's Megavlanche - Winning run

  • The Macavalanche has been happening in Scotland for a good number of years - originally at Glencoe the race moved to Nevis Range in Fort William last year.
    I managed to win last years race after a really close battle with James Shirley so was keen to try and win the race again this year. With around 1000m of descent over snow(really unpredictable snow with firm and soft patches) rock, bog, the longest blue descent in the country before ending on the 4x race track it gave it a good taste of everything whilst offering plenty opportunities for overtaking.
    If you want to see a truly entertaining and carnage filled run from this race check out James' video here - • Macavalanche - crashes...

    That first part was crazy. Having to pedal really hard downhill because of the snow was not what I expected. And the path through the woods was scary. Well done for winning.

    Man how you got down off that snow so quick i will never know, we "raced" it yesterday and it was absolute carnage. class!

    • @LiamMoynihan
      @LiamMoynihan  Рік тому +2

      Aww it was pretty treacherous with the random soft patches and holes. I think being at the front helps as theres a bit more space and no big ruts in the snow already haha. I was just leaning back, try to keep feet on the pedals and stay off the brakes then just hope for the best.. hahaha! Can't beat a bit of carnage though! Will you get in about it again next year?

    • @nathanross8459
      @nathanross8459 Рік тому

      @LiamMoynihan I think sometimes it's knowing a little of what to expect on certain areas. I was expecting the boggy stuff to be worse than it was. But then again I didn't expect the second seedling stage to be as brutal. We're definitely doing it next year. It was a blast, but knowing what to expect and some more training I hope to in amongst it! Awesome stuff 👏 👌

      Yeh smart guy. Pretty much everyone did as its a long while from leaving the finish area to get to the top and start, so having a water bottle which you can just empty at the start line if you don't drink and have a very light bottle is well worthwhile to not be parched!

      @LiamMoynihan  10 місяців тому +1

      This was in the middle of April this year. The snow would have been perfect in the morning i reckon but we did qualifying in morning and race in afternoon so it was pretty soft. Maybe they will change things up a wee bit for 2024

    Liam, what tyres do you use in the snow? Just mud tryes? Class video, loving your skills.

    • @LiamMoynihan
      @LiamMoynihan  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the kind words! I just use the same tyres pretty much all the time as if you use a full mud tyre for the snow and soft stuff it just rolls so slowly on the long trail centre sections or doesn't work as well on rocks etc so I go for Magic Mary in Ultrasoft compound front and rear pretty much all year long and I know I have a good balance on all surfaces. If there was a realllll muddy sloppy race I'd possibly move to double dirty Dan but otherwise Magic Mary all round every race and every day in between! Haha

    • @RastaMouse86
      @RastaMouse86 Рік тому

      @@LiamMoynihan Cheers for the detailed response, I've just got myself a magic Mary in ultrasoft for my rear and will do the same for the front when the time comes to replace it. Section 2 at Ard Rock last year opened my eyes that my tyres were not really cut out for any kind of slop. Happy trails!

    • @LiamMoynihan
      @LiamMoynihan  10 місяців тому +1

      Ahh it looks like concrete but it's actually Limestone. Still really hard but generally has a looseness to it which makes it quite slippy. There is a limestone quarry just beside the trails here so it generally gets used in places where the ground is really soft to firm it up and stop the tracks from breaking down really fast

    Could have won this on a Fat Bike...... would have massively gapped everyone on the top section and held on down the Blue! Lol.

    • @LiamMoynihan
      @LiamMoynihan  11 місяців тому +2

      Hahaha! Absolutely zero percent chance of winning on a fatbike. I've ridden them just enough to know how incredibly crap they are on everything other than the first 30seconds of soft snow, which was so soft with bog holes underneath that it still wouldn't have been much better. Even assuming it did float over the snow I'd happily give someone on a fatbike a massive head start and be confident of catching and overtaking haha!

    • @HenriBourjade
      @HenriBourjade 10 місяців тому

      I had a fat bike. Very capable in the slow parts of snow, sand and gravel, plowing, but very slippery in the wet and very heavy in the fast parts.

    I work with upland restoration specialists and frankly the state of the track surrounding at Nevis is going to the dogs. The work on the sides of that track is unbelievably poor and I’d have a contractor by the balls if they left one of my jobs looking like that. Absolutely shocking. That whole track is an environmental disaster in the making.

    • @LiamMoynihan
      @LiamMoynihan  Рік тому +6

      That blue track is pretty new and has had digger work done on it literally in the last few months. I'm all for keeping the hills looking natural and not making a mess, I'm aware of the unique grass and moss species etc but I think to call it an "environmental disaster" or "absolutely shocking" is a bit over the top. I've spent enough time in all the mountains around this area for the last 20 years to have built up a pretty substantial amount of anecdotal evidence on how quickly these things go back to nature and don't actually cause lasting issues. I've done trail work in winter that looks a mess in March, pretty neat 1 year later. Then if left alone and not ridden for a few years are 100% unidentifiable as ever having existed.
      I know this is more than a little trail in the woods and is a bit of an eyesore on the hill at the moment but realistically in the big picture I think it's good to keep some perspective and fight the correct battles in terms of environmental protection. I want my kids and grandkids to have wild, unspoilt hills, rivers and lochs to play in and explore like I had growing up so I am far more conscious and concerned with whats going on in our mountains than most, also spend more time in these mountains than most. To me this trail isn't something worth getting up in arms about. Yes they could & should have done a neater job and I agree it could do with being narrower and having some restoration work done along the edges but it's far from being an impending environmental disaster.

    • @bensblues
      @bensblues Рік тому

      @@LiamMoynihan should we not look to the work done bt CRC in glenlivet and tarland etc. as the new standard for all scottish trails? Those trails make these poorly built trails look like a poorly maintained forestry road and have more environmental measures taken despite being in a more environmentally sensitive area than the nevis range
