- Follow Helen Fuller, an NQT at the City Academy, Bristol, through her induction year, in the first programme of a year long study.
A newly qualified English teacher, Helen goes through a busy day, beginning a new module on war and conflict with her top set, Year 9 class.
The lesson proves to be challenging, and Helen uses a meeting with her mentor to get advice on how to deal with behaviour issues.
Later on at home, Helen reflects on her day, juggling teaching with her personal life, and what the she wants from the future.
The programme is the first installment of a three part series documenting a year in the life of an NQT, which will be broadcast over the coming year.

I found this really helpful. I'm hoping to do my PGCE next year and have heard so much doom and gloom in relation to teaching in the UK. It's nice to see a balanced account of teaching from someone who is professional and passionate. She seems like a great teacher.
good luck in your first year of teaching. It will be an inspirational year and there will be moments in which you regret choosing the profession and also moments in which you'll leave the classroom feeling very satisfied with what you have achieved. I really developed a 'gut feeling' when it comes to dealing with classroom disruptions in my first year haha.

Very informative! I see a lot of parallels between her way of teaching and my way of teaching haha. Awesome seeing her grow in one year time. It's such a nice job. It's tough and challenging but also so rewarding seeing them grow and yourself. I also love the fact that she designed her own module.

Seems like a really nice person. Seriously doubt she will last in education. You can already see the strain it is taking on her relationship-the bitterness and resentment of her partner is already starting to seep in. She'll be lucky if the relationship lasts.
yeah. she's very fidgety. I also predict, she'll either get on top of it, or it will getcthe better of her
you mean he will be lucky if the relationship lasts. He seems like he would hold her back, I didn't like the snide comments he was making, trying to put down her profession. But then again, doesn't surprise me considering he's a "musician". He appears emasculated by the fact she's in a professional career. I wish her all the best and if the marriage does break down due to his bitterness then I hope she finds someone more supportive and understanding.

The NQT is a tough year but it's the best time to have space to find your own teaching style and try out things
I'd have given told that chatty table they had one more chance to improve their management of disrupting class with personal talking time, and then separate them. School is tough for talkative kids because in developing years they obviously want to talk with friends a lot, and engage with each other more than the lesson material sometimes, however it takes away from the lesson, and they need to understand that.

It's good to see you're using a cert 15 movie with a bunch of 14 year olds. Hardly the most challenging of work for a top set Year 9. Is this what is classed as good teaching these days? How many students are in this class?
It was only a clip of a film, they hardly just sat and watched it all. She used the clip of war to help students emotionally engage with the atrocities of war. It's a very good stimulus for helping students creativity and is practised widely. You would know if you were in teaching yourself but you just appear to be judging something that you know nothing about.
