Man, for starters, those are some killer riffs! I was looking up videos on the Maxon Extreme because I came across a preowned one at my local shop (Replay Guitar Exchange in Tampa). After seeing this, I"m snagging it! Subbed to your channel as well
I've had a dozen or so heads in my day and the JCM800 is one of the best amps ever made IMO. With the right Boost pedal it can do anything and everything. Both pedals sounded great with both amps. Consider the source. Still, Winner,Winner,Winner lol. Favorite channel on YT for Amps and Pedals. No excessive talking or boring stories, just facts . Meat & Potatoes, Texas style.
808X really suits that Marshall with the more aggressive tone. Propably why old Anthrax sounds so sick, Scott didn't use a normal TS like everyone else.
Man all of it sounded great, I have an MK3 Marshall built in 1990, my understanding is that it's basically a 800 carryover in parts until 92, anyway I will be buying the red Maxon.great video.
This demo is great. All your tone is great before and after boosts. That said, how would you compare the Maxon OD808* to an MXR GT-OD? or against the Mesa Grid Slammer? (your Grid Slammer demo sounds killer, so I wonder how it compares to the OD808, more/less gain, more/less aggressive? ) Thanks!
I got both of these as well, I like them both really. I favor the red for when I'm using say a Duncan JB. If I'm using an active pickup or a high output pickup like a dimarzio deactivator-x, I'll go for the green guy.
Great video as always, I have the green one and it sounds good with my Triple rec, the red one seems to me a little bit more focused on the treble frequencies...both sounds beautifully.
Just did this shootout. Same settings and all and it was amazing. In the end I tried it with a boss sd-1 and surprised the shit out of myself on how good it did! Great videos!!!
The OD808X has a tighter and more defined bass frequencies which is particularly evident on the DR. The OD808's bass frequencies sound muffled and less defined.
Great video. Love the old school tones and style. The 808 is perfect on the Mesa and doesn't need the extra, but the 808x absolutely sets that JCM 800 alight! What's pick ups are in the Gibson?
I like both amps a lot!! The Marshall hast bit more clarity in the sound for me and this snarling mides and headcrushing crunch and the mesa is shaking earth with balls to the wall. Both are absolutely great amps!!
Yup, the red one rules for more aggressive tone. The green is more classic... there's a reason why the rockers and blues hounds love it, especially on a JCM 800 or older amp.
Saw the link to this vid on the Facebook 800 page. This is a great video. You can you play your ass off! I liked the green on the Mesa - the 808 tightens up the Mesa “flub” better to my ears. With the 2203, I found it harder to pick. Both conplimented the amp nicely. I’m away from my Apollo converters - I listened on apple ear buds on an iPhone 8 as I’m working away from home, so take it for what it is! Thanks!
Now this’ll be a memory test lol any idea which cab sim you used in the wall of sound suite? Since I last posted I’ve moved from Amps to Helix so trying to replicate this awesome tone. TIA
I've got a maxon 808 and was glad to see this video. dammit.... now I'm wondering about modding it or selling it or just biting another bullet. spot on review.
back to say I got it and I love it. your review shows how beautifully tight and sparkly this thing is. I have three Orange amps and it absolutely kills on them all.
Man. You inspired me to get a dual rec and still considering if I should get Maxon od808x vs Fortin Grind. I got the rectifier but can't get this sound. I would appreciate if you took the time to let me know the settings on the amp. I cannot read it on the screen and dying to get this sound. Please help me here :)
Good evening and thank you very much for the video. I would love to hear your opinion which is more aggressive. Between these two pedals, thank you. maxon od808 extreme and the mesa boogie grid slammer.
The red one doesnt sound like an 808, sounds like a ts 9 to me.....I prefer the green one because I love tons of mids, especially on solos.....my all time favorites are the maxon 808 green and airis proto drive, if I m playing my kartakou preamp based on the Engl....if I m playing my Randall thrasher, I don't need any od's
isaac thrashHmmm the 808X doesn’t sound like a TS9 when they are side by side. The 808 is much closer actually. For rhythm playing the lack of the low mids in the 808x make it a bit more tight sounding and feeling.
killertonetexas - You've got me curious now. I spent years trying pedals before finding the 808, and i was looking for that tightness in the palm mutes all that time. Didn't think i'd ever find anything better than it.
Your JCM 800 2203 sounds awesome. Are the setting the ones in the picture of the video? I have a 2203 from 83 and it doesn't sound full like that. It sounds a lot more like ac/dc
Nice video! can i ask you an info bro? i have the same JCM800 model (it looks the same at least), and i find out that without any boost it has really a low gain even on the high gain input. I've seen some of those heads on youtube and looks like they all have a bit more gain. Are there multiple versions of JCM800 lead with vertical input or it can be and internal setting like tube bias or something?
I have a Marshall 2203 and had the OD808x. I shouldnt have sold it. the 808x sounds killer through a 2203. Because it cuts the bass some, I ran a cheap graphic EQ with just the bass frequencies boosted after the 808x and it sounded killer. this pedal is perfect for the 800.
I have a Mesa Mark V 35 with a “saturation mod” which lets me drive the gain harder. Without the TS though it sounds muddy; with the TS everything comes together.
Try the Pro Tone Dino Cazares OD pedal or teeh MXR Custom Modified Badass OD. Also the Fortin Hexdrive and Airis Savage Drive are great. Any of those will still have lots of bass left in the tone but still be super tight.
Is all good djent will disappear on a couple years oldish metal never' recently i listen to the new kataklysm music and i was very disappointing more than the usual since they started to sound just like any metal band on the past but whit this one they went all in on the djent scene and is boring as hell
Man, the green Maxon OD with the recto is such a classic tone
That Mesa with the 808 is my favourite distortion sound I’ve heard. Ever.
808x sounded absolutely mental on the 2203
Man, for starters, those are some killer riffs! I was looking up videos on the Maxon Extreme because I came across a preowned one at my local shop (Replay Guitar Exchange in Tampa). After seeing this, I"m snagging it!
Subbed to your channel as well
This dude rips for sure
Green with the Mesa wins for me. Red on JCM800 wins for me. Although it’s splitting hairs. Great video.
I thought the exact same.
Dean H I agree. The Marshall does it for me too. Especially with a boost in front
One of the best comparison of this two pedals on youtube - IMHO.
Great job!
That Mesa and Green Od808 had Nevermore tones all over it. Especially from the Dead Heart album.
Tone is as good as the performance, absolutely incredible. I prefer the red for both here.
Thanks! Th red one is my choice as well by a slim margin.
Awesome vid as always man! The ODX does give a little something extra tonaly to my ears. With Maxon, you can't go wrong!
5:33 dual rec no pedal marshall no pedal 6:22
5:48 dual rec green od marshall green od 6:37
6:03 dual rec red od marshall red od 6:52
Red on both for me, although on the 800 it was kind of a draw. I adore the JCM800 with a boost pedal for metal.
The man is back in town
Don't you mess me 'round
I really enjoyed the playing! Straight into the amp was the best. I like the raw sound. The OD808 has a nice vintage, tight sound though.
OD808x with the JCM 800 Is absolute tonal perfection. Will definitely be purchasing one for myself.
When he start riffing i had biggest grin , I totally forgot about od pedals just enjoying the riffs!
The winner is both !!
808X really suits that Marshall with the more aggressive tone. Propably why old Anthrax sounds so sick, Scott didn't use a normal TS like everyone else.
The 808X sounded sick with the 2203. It didn't matter as much with the Mesa.
1:39 Mesa 3:36 Marshall
Someone likes Erik Rutan tones lol. He uses the duel rec and the jcm 800 with those exact pedals. Because its fuckin rad. Good video man.
Great demo man. JCM and green one rules :-) I love that combination the most.
Man all of it sounded great, I have an MK3 Marshall built in 1990, my understanding is that it's basically a 800 carryover in parts until 92, anyway I will be buying the red Maxon.great video.
Green sounds so classic. Red does sound more modern....but damn, both are killer. Great vid.
Thanks!
Came for the comparison, stayed for the riffage. Very creative writting.
Killer playing, I had to subscribe. Love the dual rec.
This demo is great. All your tone is great before and after boosts. That said, how would you compare the Maxon OD808* to an MXR GT-OD? or against the Mesa Grid Slammer? (your Grid Slammer demo sounds killer, so I wonder how it compares to the OD808, more/less gain, more/less aggressive? ) Thanks!
The Marshall with the green pedal sounds best to my ears

Great video as always, I have the green one and it sounds good with my Triple rec, the red one seems to me a little bit more focused on the treble frequencies...both sounds beautifully.
I agree with your choice of the OD808X. I have both the regular version and the 808x and through a high gain amp the 808x just sounds better.
Just did this shootout. Same settings and all and it was amazing. In the end I tried it with a boss sd-1 and surprised the shit out of myself on how good it did! Great videos!!!
I love both those pedals, the X is exactly what it says it is!
With that 8 ocloc'k bass...Your neighbor bass player will be screaming "I f...ing can't hear myself!" Cool music by the way.
I liked the red overdrive as well, although there is very subtle difference
Great video! I preferred the OD808X greatly with both amps, just had a little bit more of an aggressive cut to it which I loved.
The OD808X has a tighter and more defined bass frequencies which is particularly evident on the DR. The OD808's bass frequencies sound muffled and less defined.
Them riffs are some smoking hot quality thrash my man.
Thanks man. Lots of thrash on my channel!
Great video. Love the old school tones and style. The 808 is perfect on the Mesa and doesn't need the extra, but the 808x absolutely sets that JCM 800 alight!
What's pick ups are in the Gibson?
Thanks! In this video it is a Bareknuckle Painkiller.
OD808X hell yeah 🎸🔊
Great video. Amazing playing. To the point and with the right amount of talking. I sub'ed!
Right on thanks!
Hm, that ODX sounds pretty damn good!
Jocke Skog much cleaner in the low mids. You know, the ones we EQ out when mixing guitars!!
@@killertone I hate 400hz lol
Great playing and sound! I will try that Maxon X since my coworker has it and see how it compares to my Boss sd-1.
I like both amps a lot!! The Marshall hast bit more clarity in the sound for me and this snarling mides and headcrushing crunch and the mesa is shaking earth with balls to the wall. Both are absolutely great amps!!
Another killer video my dude

Badass riffs dude
Absolutely love the X with those amps as well as a peavy 5150. 🤘🤘
The green one all the way!
Actually both sound awesome. Re-listening.
Yeah I think they are both great pedals I just slightly like the X a bit more. Can't go wrong either way!
Hot Damn! It's a great day for a Killer Texas Tone vid!!!
Now this’ll be a memory test lol any idea which cab sim you used in the wall of sound suite?
Since I last posted I’ve moved from Amps to Helix so trying to replicate this awesome tone. TIA
Tight as always!
Great sound \m/
Thanks for the demo!!!
Steve Groebe you’re very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Face in knob :)
Nice ad, i like both amp !!
Have you tested an Boss SD1 for the Rectifier? Very good for me ;)
Honestly, doesn’t sound like you can go wrong with either one. I think I maybe prefer the JCM 800.
Nice video and good demo like you said there's not a huge difference between the two
that was sick! nice nice sounds bro
Definitely the OD808X all the way
I've got a maxon 808 and was glad to see this video. dammit.... now I'm wondering about modding it or selling it or just biting another bullet.
spot on review.
back to say I got it and I love it. your review shows how beautifully tight and sparkly this thing is. I have three Orange amps and it absolutely kills on them all.
Green sounded tighter and the Red has more anger. I like both.
Those amps sound really similar the way you have them dialed in.

Yes, I hear the 808x more modern, both are great anyway, and good thrashhhhh 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Those riffs are just...AAAAAAAAAHHH SO GOOD
808 sounded better with the recto because it has lower output imo
I agree. The 800 really benefits from the higher output.
Your JCM 800 2203 sounds awesome. Are the setting the ones in the picture of the video? I have a 2203 from 83 and it doesn't sound full like that. It sounds a lot more like ac/dc

Looking for a boost for my Orange Rockerverb that has a darker low mid focused sound, which one do you think who push the high mids more?
Red asymmetrical clipping? 🪓🤔
It’s a toss up, but one thing’s for sure - I love your playing!
Uhh noob guitarist here, can I get the tab for those riffs?
So more mids or more bass
I don't care what your reviewing, I just like to listen to you jam! Is this all original material?
Thanks! Yes all original material.
Hello, for you does the Jcm800 mini could be a good choice for this kind of sound
What was your WOS settings. I can’t seem to get my impulses to sound this good
me interesa ver solo el tono del pedal no como booster...
If you turned the drive up a little wouldn't you get the same output?
I have a Marshall 2203 and had the OD808x. I shouldnt have sold it. the 808x sounds killer through a 2203. Because it cuts the bass some, I ran a cheap graphic EQ with just the bass frequencies boosted after the 808x and it sounded killer. this pedal is perfect for the 800.
D. Duke Why does everyone always sell their best gear? On every comments section there’s one of these comments.
Preferred the 808X, it had more harmonics and sizzle. It sounded dynamite in the Marshall.
Great Vid and comparison! How did you get that much gain on the 800 stock or modded?
Stock! Just nailed the front end of the amps with the level output of these pedals.
Great video! If I wanted to swap up from my Ibanez mini TS to either of these or the Fortin Grind, which would you recommend?
What amps are you using?
I have a Mesa Mark V 35 with a “saturation mod” which lets me drive the gain harder. Without the TS though it sounds muddy; with the TS everything comes together.
Any thoughts?
the 808X sounds tighter imo, great riffs :)
What song are you playing at 4:44?
Something I wrote
@@killertone it sounds killer!
Hi!,the tubes in Marshall are el34?
How have I missed your channel bro? Got my script!! Lol
Which od keep a lot of defined bass boosting rectifiers?
Try the Pro Tone Dino Cazares OD pedal or teeh MXR Custom Modified Badass OD. Also the Fortin Hexdrive and Airis Savage Drive are great. Any of those will still have lots of bass left in the tone but still be super tight.
That first amp gave me a dual rectum fire...🔥🔥 Ouch!
Is your Marshall modified? my jcm800 don't sound that saturated with the exact same settings
Totally stock
@@killertone Sick sound! im between the maxon od9 and the od808 which one should i go for? i play heavy metal on standard E and hard rock on Eb
What settings do you have on the 808 ?
Gain - barely above 0, Tone - 1 o'clock, Level -cranked
Reg 808 on the 800 all day
The Green Pedal retains clarity and low end doesn't get list like with the Red Pedal.
Nice guitar badass
I agree
If this guy was playing djent he could have more than 100k subs but he only plays oldish true thrash metal and the new generation cannot understand...
really sounds like KREATOR some of the time. way to go!
yeah.... but then he'd have to play thru axefx with a pink shirt. I can understand why he doesn't

Do it.
The red has more bite and top end
