- This time on SPPTV, Rob continues working on the LS engine he plans to drop into his 1987 Chevrolet S-10 Budget Build Turbo project! Chopping a stock LS truck oil pan for ground clearance, or clearance in general has been a thing for awhile now. Mike's LS15 uses a C6 corvette oil pan which required cutting and boxing in the front crossmember. It works but it cost $260. Rob is attempting to keep the budget as low as possible on this build project, so cutting the truck oil pan is the plan!
But first Rob adds lock tight to the cam bolts, which he installed in a previous episode. A couple people commented about the bolts backing out, and using lock tight. It's nice to have 12,000+ pairs of eyes to check over your work... sometimes! xD
The oil pan and pickup tube are worked on next. Clayton cut out sections of the stock GM Truck oil pans with a wire EDM in order to have more ground clearance. Both the Sh!thorse, and Rob's S-10 are low to the ground and need the room. Like most things you see on the internet, welding the pan together is not as easy as it would appear!

You can use a plumber's pipe cutter to cut the oil pick up and leaves no metal flakes.
U do lts of ls truck pans....what i do to get good welds i take a torch and heat the parts wer im gina weld and cook all the oil and unpureties out before i weld
It is pretty amazing how the LS doesn’t leak but any old school motor will pour out oil.
I like that you tackle anything and not be denied! Hey Rob, I sold my GTO engine and bought a 2000 Silverado 2500 4x4 with a 6.0 and a 4L80e for $800.......173,000 miles and it came with an 8 ft Fisher MM1 plow......my LS swap has begun!

Uncle Henry's swap and trade classified. I don't think he knew what it was worth (duh) I found it with an online search....no picture..... Ad said plow truck, not registered, un-inspected, needs work for sticker asking $1000 He said I was the only one to call. Don't overlook ads without pix...it makes buyers suspect the seller is hiding something. Sometimes the seller just isn't good with phones or computers.......these people often don't know what they have. This couple were very nice people, pleasant to deal with. A satisfying score.
A few tips as I'm a know-all like everyone else here. Firstly- far far easier to set up the pickup and everything if you cut the material out of the very bottom of the pan and replace the bottom with a new piece of flat material. This lets you install your modified tacked pickup and check is clearance just by using a ruler across the opening ( hope that made sense).
This also means you don't have any big holes and awkward gaps to weld up.
Secondly- i have only done one pan but the welding came out beautiful by cleaning the pan throughly, Tig welding the seams with tons of filler wire.. then ground it all out and then welded it up again. The heat and filler wire effectively cleans things out for the second pass very nicely
Welded lot of aluminum back in the day.. aluminum is very porous.. pre heating it with oxy/accet torch would help..(bake out the oil) I’ve also just ground out the first pass and rewelded using the first pass to burn out the shit!!

Nice work! I cut my oil pan too. I don’t have a welder so I paid a buddy that is a professional welder to weld for me. I cut the bottom off like yours but I welded on a 1/4” piece of plate aluminum and I relocated the drain plug next to the oil filter so it’d be easier for me to use. For the oil pickup I used clay to measure the gap to the bottom of the pan.

Preheat and post heat would make all the difference
I've welding a couple of truck pans. I use alcohol and a small stainless wire brush. I preheated with a torch, clean again and used 4043. I stop, clean and repeat. I just got some 4943 rod, it's suppose to weld a lot better with cast aluminum.
Jerry Guti hi man i have welded my pan and it warped slightly do you think it will be ok? Did your warp at all? If i hold it flat on one side there is a 2 mm gap on the other. But if i bolt it down to the block it goes flat again. Im just worried it wint seal coz its not perfectly flush to the block before i bolt it up..
I did the same cut and weld on my 5.3 oil pan.
Just put a marks on the same distance from it's top and cut it with a regular angle grinder, then made a "bottom" piece (5mm sheet aluminum) with t he same angle grinder, cleaned everything with acetone and welded it up. Got it done in 35 minutes.
Shortening a pickup tube took me another 50 minutes (TIG welded it with purging).
I don't know why you've gone with EDM for stuff like that but anyway =)
P.S. - cracking of those oil pans usually comes because of stress so you can preheat it and weld it like a cake.
But mine wasn't preheated and welded just fine =)
No porosity at all. Acetone cleans much better than the regural "brake cleaner" - that's for sure!

Aluminum needs the puddle to be completely filled with some convexity, any concavity in the bead, it cracks when the puddle is starved of filler.

Rob, next time throw that pan on the BBQ for about 30minutes on med-high heat after cleaning, bring it up to 200*F it will cook the oil out of the casting, weld while hot. makes welding shitty dirty cast aluminum MUCH easier
You could still braze over the top of the weld to fill the holes.
i put them in the oven at 350 for 2 hours to cook the oil out then use a torch right before i weld it to heat it up.
lol i have one in the garage. i think my wife would hire a hit man if i used the one in the house.
gm sales a oil pan kit dip stick,gasket ,pick up tube, and stick for 160.00 i think its a v8 hummer pan that is what i run
JB weld will not stop an oil pan leak,once the oil get hot ,it just seeps out around the patch,
Oil soaked anything makes the welding tougher esp aluminum as it "demands" to be very clean. Cast aluminum is not easy either even if you do it often; lots of variables.
As others have said, try burning it out (torch), clean, burn it some more, clean, pre-heat (I'd toss it in the kitchen oven if it fits), weld short sections on opposite sides as much as possible...I think I would wrap it in a welding blanket to try and retain the heat (slowing the cooling) and then just let it sit...its a PITA but still cheaper than an aftermarket pan that may not fit either.
Braze welding works well on cast aluminum.especially if your not familiar tigging it.

That is exactly what I was thinking, stick it in the oven not only to cook off the oil, but to preheat the pan so it's not acting like a heat sink and cooling the welded area too quickly so it won't crack? But hell if I know, I have never welded an oil pan either! LOL
Was coming to say just what you guys did
I prefer using a cam bolt locking plate. with your talent it should be easy enough to make 1 out of thin sheet metal. do inside and out and put thin coat of jb weld around your seam and about an inch on each side. you can also use vinegar to clean the area before welding. air gas sells a real good aluminum cleaner
Pick a few differentspot and put down one time at a time alternating from side to side to side if that makes sense it will disperse the heat better and prevent cracking

If you can't pressure test it, I'd use boiling water to test it, that way it will be at temperature, it could expand and still leak, and did you do any welding on the inside of the pan? If the inside is dirty you will still get oil contamination in the weld. On the other one try to soak it in super clean, but not overnight because the super clean will eat the aluminum. How much capacity if any did you loose by shortening the pan?
I used a flat plate when I shortened my pan
I just read an article on line on how you take an old balancer make it so that it slips on the crank fairly easy. Now turn the crank several times and Wham Bam the pump is lines up. Now haven't tried this yet. Will try it in a about a month and can let you know how it goes or if anyone has tried this maybe they can say if it works or not.

I used a torch to try and burn the oil out of the pan before I welded mine, but the casting has way too many air pockets so I kept blowing out my weld. Mine ended up looking like PlayDough instead of stacks of dimes....
it is cracking cuz its cooling down to fast if you keep heat on and and gradualy bring it down till its room temp you will be ok

the outside may be clean. but as your welding u can probably see the oil being pulled out of the aluminum into your weld puddle contaminating the weld. rose bud and try and burnt the shit out

What's the procedure of shortening up the dipstick .
you could and should have taken it to a local tranny or engine shop and had it hot tanked. it has to be perfectly clean to tig weld. If it isn't SPOTLESS it will get contaminated(That is what makes the pin holes everywhere). Grind out all the bad weld! I mean all of it. Yes your going to be practically back to two pieces. but it looks to me you want this car done right. Use a wire wheel after you get it hot tanked to clean the area to be tig welded clean your tip and the parts properly and start again. no big deal really. REMEMBER if you touch the tip to your weld you have to stop and clean the tip immediately and grind out the weld you contaminated it. Good Luck!
When you weld cast iron you have to pre heat it with a torch .. or it will draw carbon to the weld and make it crake

The best method for test leaks is with fuel...
Your material was to dirty. Not sure if u pre heated the whole pan but if u had put it in the oven for a hr before welding it would have helped. And you probably should have taken a torch to it to burn out some of the oils and just cleaned it more. Aluminum is hard, but if it works it works that's all that matters.

Havent watched the hole vedio yet and dont have sound on...just going by the image of the pan...dont the chevy 2 have a pan that looks like yours...i will get to your vedio soon
