Best of all is you don't necessarily need to sacrifice low light performance. There seem to be panels (Ortustech is one I found) that have like 450 nits brightness. Imagine a laptop where you could just go into the sun and turn off the backlight 🤯 seems like the largest display ortus offers right now is 6" (Steam Deck competitor anyone?) But make it bigger and you have a kickass laptop concept.
I would love to have one too a reflective LCD but 4 something like a Steam Deck however if using on heavy apps or gaming the LCD won't even be the problem on high power laptops the screen won't even matter much when the hardware keep draining like nuts current crap battery technology ☹ But would definitely be amazing for a efficient device just to surt on the web and a bit of youtube for many hours😎
Thanks for running this experiment for us! By the way, while the input signal might be 44 or 60Hz, that's not the same as the rate the panel updates it's image. It looks like it's around 10-20Hz at best. The thing with e-ink is there's a trade-off between update rate and ghosting. So for a cleaner image, set it to something like text mode. Whereas the video mode is optimised for moving images but it has more ghosting/artefacts.
That would make sense, these aren't meant for media consumption, its meant for reading emails, or working on word documents and spreadsheets. I couldn't find any actual tech specs for this specific monitor, but i did find one for a competitor that says 15hz refresh rate, there was also a phone that was limited to about 10hz that uses the same tech as this, though i can't remember the brand name or model number.
I've been wanting one of these for writing and editing for so long. Regular monitors cause me so much eye strain. Hopefully some day I'll be able to afford one. Fun video.
Yes. It would be excellent. Its too bad Mr UFD didnt have the common sense to actually talk about the superior advantages of an e-ink display for productivity. Dude lost all cool points today. Very obnoxious and ignorant.
Try looking for a monitor that doesn't use PWM, the flicker of monitors with PWM can be harsh on the eyes, even if you don't notice the flicker itself. And some monitors are really really harsh to the eyes, even without PWM, or from big brands. When buying a monitor i stumbled upon one from Samsung that i could not look at for more than 15 minutes, while on other monitors i can be all day in front of them without problems. But i've also seen really good monitors from Samsung, amongst the ones i tried from Samsung it was just that one model. And, don't go crazy on the brightness, setting it too high is also bad, and monitors usually have ridiculously high brightness in their default settings. But make it bright enough so you can see whats in the screen comftably :).
Same thing happened to me I ended up buying a cheap OLED laptop and I just use dark mode for everything and I have the tint on to a small extent and my eyes are doing better but all of the blue light that comes out of the entire backlight from a regular LCD is bad.
Funny vid… Though I think the primary use for such a display is in productivity applications and reading a lot of text. E-ink would lead to less eye strain when reading
This tech is in it 's infancy but they already have e-ink panels with red and yellow e-ink. Eventually we may get to 16 color e-ink panels with refresh rates at 50hz. So yes buy the panel as an early adopter so we can fund further advancements.
I have an ONYX BOOX Poke 3 (android tablet with e-ink) screen, and yes, while I have both played native games and used the steam link app to play steam games over it, you kind of want turn based things. Baba is you works disturbingly great because you can turn off the ambient animations.
Cool little test. Still waiting for color e-ink as an HDMI display :D At the end it resembles a Commodore Amiga image output on a b/w dot matrix printer in the late 80's.
Yes, the refresh speed is amazing. The Dasung monitor, as a general novelty, is probably not the best solution for all tasks. If, however, you do have specific needs that can be addressed with a monochrome, paper-like screen, then this one is the best. Unbelievable refresh speed and display effect. It also does perform well with the technology it's using.
I had a random thought now nearly 3 months later... Use this to play original Gameboy games. I am curious how it will look. Like Mario Land 2 or Tetris
