Sometimes cameras are expensive not because they are better but because people hype them up. Are Leica film cameras some of the best 35mm cameras ever made? Yes. Is an M6 going to make you take better photos than a Nikon Ftn? Or a Contax T2 compared to a SX-70? No.
Vuhlandes has gone through like 10 different cameras at this point over 2 years. Is his work today better than it was 2 years ago? Yes. Is it because he traded his 5D for a Fuji or traded his RB for an RZ? No. People need to accept that what you have is what you have. If you take bad photos with an M6, you spent $5000 to take bad photos.
Anyone that cares about photography won't hire you for your gear. They will hire you for your work. So start working on your work and stop working on your gear.

35yrs in the Pro game. No-one has ever asked me what camera I (we) have, or what camera an image was taken on - whether it was a studio 10x8, a Nikon F3, our Digi Hass H6d100c or our Leica's - in the same way I doubt a carpenter is ever asked what saw he uses. Leica hype? Possibly but usually by those who have never used one - they are a different sort of hammer - some people like then some don't - for us in the fashion world they have their place like all of our other gear. However I would say that some cameras 'feel better' than others - I hate using the H6D100c - its slow, fiddly cumbersome, problematic, the grip display is too small and complicated but the images it eventually produces are the best I have seen from MF - colours are perfectly replicated every time - whereas when the need arises our Leica Q2 Mono for instance is as simple and as honest as you can get.

My favorite 35mm cameras are late 90s/early 2000s SLRs. They're basically the same cameras as current entry-level DSLRs, using the same modern lenses, but shoot film and are cheap because they aren't deemed collectible.

I so appreciate that you don't go down a rabbit hole of technical specs when you talk about your experience with regard to gear/software/processes. I think a lot of content creators in this sphere tend to get caught up in things that are of little use to the average person and their opinions are informed by their understanding of what "should be" the best rather than what feels right to them. I usually walk away from reviews and tutorials and first impression videos feeling way more confused (and frankly stupid) for not being able to make sense of what the jargon/technical feats are supposed to mean to me. You have such an unpretentious approach to your work and imparting that same wisdom to your audience while still being sure of what you do and confident about what you create. More of this approachability is sorely need in the photography world these days. Keep up the great work!

I bought an XE-1 and later an XE-2. Both are great cameras and the X Trans sensor (like the one in the X100v) makes incredible photos. The film emulation modes look great also. Bonus that you can use the film modes for video also! That being said, there's a lot more to film photography than the "look". Film photography is more about the finality of the frame and the thought that goes into each photo since you only have a set number of frames in each roll. You'll find yourself thinking a lot more about every aspect of your photo before tripping the shutter.

As many of you, I like to try "new" cameras all the time and for the last couple of years, it's become a few. All from cheap kiev to expensive contax cameras, but there is always one camera that I never get rid of. The Minolta A9/Dynax 9/Maxxum 9. I just love everything about that camera, the feel, the weight, the controls and being able to shoot wide open on a sunny day (1/12 000s). I just really enjoy using it and a camera is a tool, and the minolta just feels like an extension of me when using it.

If someone is looking for a cheaper system to the Leica M6 with similar (not the same) features I just bought a friend the Minolta Hi-Matic 7sII black edition. She wanted to get startet in film and was ready to pay the 4000€ for the m6 and I bought her the Minolta to start with instead, before she made this investment without even knowing if she liked film. And she loves the minolta and is very satisfied with the results in scans and prints.

heh, someday I will maybe get a Leica M, but for now, I am looking forward to trying out the Voigtlander Bessa T I recently picked up (requires external viewfinders but I find that kinda fun too albeit pricey if you get many lenses). Totally agreed on not having to have Leica M glass, I got a Voigtlander 28mm f/2 (the new 'Vintage' version) which I have heard nothing but good things about.
I think my favourite 35mm camera is hmmm maybe the Konica Hexar AF just because of how easy it is to use (though it only has 1/250s shutter speed). Really enjoyed using the Contax G2 as well though it is a chunk larger. In the manual focus realm it would maybe be the Contax 139 Quartz (a Contax SLR folk generally don't care for) for the reason that I have never felt a NICER film wind in my life lol.

    Just for the record:
(This is less aimed towards the video and more to the topic M6 in general.)
The M6 is that as great as everybody‘s saying. It has the worst rangefinder of all the mayor M models. Its meter is not nearly as precise as the one from the M5. And its ergonomics straight up suck compared to the other models. I have a M2 right now and that just wants to be held. When I use the shutter speed dial on a M6 my finger gets hurt. It’s price is completely, utterly over blown. If you want a good Leica, get a M3, M2, or a MP. Don’t get a M5 tho. That camera is for people who actually want to take pictures and not show off the fancy camera they got dangling around their neck.

From a marketing perspective, people under 35 or so, are significantly less brand loyal than older folks.
Doesn't make anybody "better" because of it.
A lot of it makes sense. To just use cameras as one example, back in the days before digital, a 'pro' or even semi-pro level 35mm camera body might cost $1,000 (when $1,000 was HARD to come by...........about $3,300 in 2021), and that camera (Nikon F3, Pentax LX, Pentax K-1000, etc.) might have been in production for 10, 15, 20 years............which meant, in addition to a robust build quality, there was an abundance of spare parts. So, many people kept their 35mm bodies for 10, 20, or more years. Essentially, the better part of a lifetime. So, brand loyalty made a lot of sense. My film bodies are 35+ years old, and for the most part, work like the day they were new.
Shorter product lifecycles (and rapidly changing technology) make brand loyalty less of a thing.
I like heavy, well-built camera bodies. If I could afford Leica glass, most likely I'd have a Leica SLR and be a zealous Leica user.

It is definitely not worth the cost. They are fun to have and use but won't take noticeable better pictures than a AE-1 or any other camera for that matter. 2021 its a camera nerds camera or a posers camera. I think there is simply too much vintage glass which all is excellent to spend the money on a M-lens camera & leica glass.
When a m6 cost $1000 it was a different discussion but $3000 for a 35mm camera? It's just absurd, same thing with expensie PnS camears.

Leicas were meant for the field. They can take being set on the ground. It’s a damn shame when people treat these cameras like they’re made out of crystal.

Nice video bro, don't have budget like what you said earlier my favorite 35mm film camera are Olympus Om-2n and Olympus XA both Olympus, both not loud shutter sound that's why I pick it up and also not that expensive. 📸😁

Yo not gonna lie I've been shooting Nikon from the beginning, my go to is the "brick 🧱" F5 but my favorite 📷 is a chinon cm5 with a Pentax 50mm and the images that come out are beautiful plus the story of how I got the camera is amazing. Would love to try Leica one day to see how I like it.

I started with film back in the day. Once I migrated to digital I just don't see anything about film that outperform digital in any way. You seem to enjoy it so have fun offer your artistic view.

Good on you! Yes Everyone loves photography eventually end up with leica then start using other brand and back to Leica again... Now you inspire me to use Leica again.... Yep I am buying new voigtlander lens soon! All the current Leica Lenses are designed perfectly and images are too perfect and boring. I prefer old Leica Lenses. Thanks for the video!

Yea, I’m not gonna buy a camera if I’m gonna be afraid to scuff it up. I’ve been shooting on my Nikon f5 since high school and it’s been dropped, kicked, even thrown through a window when I was getting robbed and it still hasn’t failed me.

"Gear Glorification" - Great point, you should trademark that! Some of the best lenses I've used were Voigtlander (35mm f2.5 and 21mm f4). f1.4 and asph. is overrated. If you need that kind of DOF and sharpness, shoot large format.

how does focussing on a range finder work since you're not actually looking through the lens itself

    • @Chazyfizzlez
      @Chazyfizzlez 3 роки тому +1

There's basically 2 images in your viewfinder. Like the real image and an overlay. You like them up and you're in focus.
