Fit Testing the ReadiMask Nose-only Hack - Does it really work?

  • Lisa Foreman posted on Twitter how you can use a ReadiMask N95 over just your nose. I wanted to know if the method could really protect you at your next dental visit, so I tested it with a particle counting mask fit testing machine.
ReadiMasks are NIOSH certified N95s that stick on your face - no headbands needed. This hack is not an official method of using the mask.

Foreman notes that even with the hack, you are still at some risk having your mouth open, perhaps even breathing in occasionally through it, so don't count on this hack making you impervious to covid. But maybe, just maybe, it could help reduce your risk of respiratory infection at appointments where you have to have your mouth exposed.
    Here's Foreman's method:
    / 1517896018188197891
    She notes:
"tested normal way over nose & mouth which allows forceful inspiratory volume for seal check (don’t own one of your fancy machines). Mask w acrylic doesn’t seem to leak at all, but silicone does at top and bottom even w careful attention to seal. Gonna order more acrylic ones."
    fi...
I find the seal of the ReadiMasks to vary a lot depending on how well you apply the mask and the condition of your skin. You really need to seal it well, and get all the junctions sealed tightly. You need clean skin, and no stubble. Cosmetics and moisturizers may interfere with the seal. Not compatible with stubble or facial hair in my tests.
This is only one test, and only on my face. YMMV. Fit is very individual.

I am impressed by your lack of remorse for just shaving off a 10-year mustache! I have a dentist appointment next week, and I have a mustache I've had since before I was married. It's not going to be an easy discussion with her!

Good luck! I had to do it again for the second video on this hack (still got good results). 😬

Thank you so much for doing this! The only time I've gotten sick via airborne microbes in the last 3+ years was at a dental office. I didn't go inside anywhere else for a while. I thankfully only got sick relatively briefly and it might've been because I only had my respirator briefly/only when essential/got a low dose. Prior to using respirators I would get very sick for weeks - months. My go to/fav mask is the Jackson duckbill, so this would be taking my ducky look to the next level. 😹 Also, wow, taking off your stash after so long. That's dedication!! Thanks again!! Another use is when you have to eat inside such as when you're hospitalized or a caregiver who can't leave or open windows! A lot of people criticized me when I shared info on nose masking a while back and just said to not dine in without considering these scenarios!! Love it!!

I get the small size from alliant, I do two horizontal pleats, and then firmly adhere all 4 sides so that it's not wobbling around and there's not a bunch of material sticking out. It might solve that 1% leak as it seems like it might get bumped and pulled away the way you have it.

I am sorry. You are correct. The yellow ones without NIOSH are silicone. The yellow ones with NIOSH are acrylic “medical adhesive “. All of the gray ones are silicone.

Thank you for this! I did this at my last dental visit and was wondering how effective it’s was.

Readimasks are great for haircuts since no bands. But I adjust over the nose and mouth. I think, while if you have an openminded crowd a nose only readimask could work in theory, people are mean and judgmental, and doing it in public will be subject to ridicule. In a dentist's office though it might be reasonable for procedures.

Yeah very few have ever masked in my area. Much less now. I have received some rude comments at previous dentist appointments for wearing a normal mask prior to my cleaning. I wish people were more empathetic

For haircuts i was thinking of using a half face elastomeric mask with the harness taken off. In theory it should work if you push it up to your face.

It looks less ridiculous if you fold it and tape it onto your face ;) You can also wear a mask over the top before you enter the procedure room

But your mouth is open and breathing in air for possibly an hour or more. How does this help?

@@TE-7302- you'd obviously have to consciously focus on only breathing through your nose

The yellow mask you are testing is the acrylic seal. The gray one is the silicone seal.

The ReadiMask in the video is a silicone seal ReadiMask. It's the original. It's the production run created pending NIOSH approval.

Do you have a link (or search term suggestions) for a nose mask? The readimask hack looks so cumbersome.

for the nose:I worn ready mask (95% protection)at dentist office and hold it with "fix the mask" silicon ( to assure keep the adjustment and allow the dentist to work) bracket and also behind that "first defense nasal screen"(77% protection) and behind that spray with ingredient iota-carrageenan (like that almost for sure covid wu=ill not have chance through the nose)...For the mouth: I make gargles whit PVP-I (to start fighting wiy=th the virus in case), then sprayed with the throat with iota- carrageenan (to make a coat of seal)...And then I pray for these stpds dentist take care about what they putting inside my mouth (my appointments are on monday morning the first patient) Then afer when i left the office continuos with PVP-I or Paxovid or any other to reduce the viral load (in case)...Then tested for coronavirus and if positive start immediately with paxovid or any other therapy...Almoust all the previous protocol could be avoided IF the dentist were more emphatic!...I have seen that they dont care!
