I find it funny how people criticize the videos that are made to share knowledge and very helpful advice but never do I read anyone saying they’ll make a better one. This is a pretty good dance lesson that you’re getting for free. I’ve paid $20-40 per lesson. Needless to say, this is a great beginner class so try appreciating the care and time this couple took to make this instead of complaining. Teachers are the only ones who are allowed to correct a student and always have a bent elbow because...what do you get at the end of a straight arm? A jerk... that also means coaching a student or partner to smile. Nice job and I’ll be looking for more. Thank you for your detailed instructional video,

Bev Kay , I’m not try to criticize them at all for trying to be nice people and teach a free dance lesson, yes you could learn to dance from these people, you just wouldn’t be able to dance West Coast Swing at least from this video.I’m not quite sure why they think because they have slotted an East Coast Swing dance that has rock steps followed by walking steps where you have to reach way out to start afterwards on every basic. You can dance with someone that does East Coast Swing and lead them into West Coast Swing moves, that doesn’t mean their doing West Coast Swing or that they know how to dance or teach West Coast Swing. I’ve been dancing West Coast Swing for over 25 years and never seen anyone do this kind of dancing and call it West Coast Swing. I’ll give you an example, this follower might be able to dance with a leader that is leading West Coast Swing and maybe able to adapt an eventually be able to break some bad habits learned from this Leader on this video. Why do I say bad habits, not criticizing him for being a bad leader but he’s dancing some other dance that would be recognized as West Coast Swing in the West Coast Swing dance community.Yes they are Swing dancing and teaching people to have a great time, but please don’t call this West Coast Swing. I can teach someone how to do West Coast Swing but I’m surely not going to tell them they are learning how to salsa dance and make a video how to learn how to salsa when I’m actually teaching them a totally different dance style, I hope you understand what I’m trying to say in a nicer way , it’s just that this video is very misleading.

@@MikeB-wh2bn The beginning three steps are something you (as a WCS dancer) would call "a start up". The three steps are prior to the music, and then you go into a send off to really start the music.

Awesome, thanks so much. I am going out tomorrow with a new friend and her group of friends and I have never done this kind of dancing before. We are all in our late 40's and early 50's so no pressure, but it was really wonderful to get the basics. I hope I don't look too much of a dufus. Thanks again. A little bit of Glenn Miller is on the menu tomorrow. A Texan in Europe.

We just wanted to know the basic swing rhythm and nobody told us the way we needed to learn it, until YOU. God bless you, sir. I now am doing the triple triple rock step. Your point about the triangles really helped a bunch. And starting me out on the basic marching rhythm was also exactly what I needed.

I love the way people don't pay attention to the entire picture. If y'all can't see east /west coast similarities you're nuts. An excellent source of learning the rhythm and dancing with your partner rather than trying to mimic advanced moves when ya don't know what you're doing. Great lesson!

I LOVE to dance, and almost could be considered "a dancer." I am 72 years old and thought I'd learn something new when I heard they were going to teach the West Coast Swing at an event here in Corozal, Belize. So I went to UA-cam and found this beginners video. Ha! The basic steps he first showed are EXACTLY the basic steps we used to use for first the jitterbug in the 50s (when I started dancing) and the bop in the 60s (when I was a teenager). Actually here is what Wikipedia says about the jitterbug: "The jitterbug is a kind of dance popularized in the United States in the early twentieth century and is associated with various types of swing dances such as the Lindy Hop, jive, and East Coast Swing." SO I guess what goes around comes around. I am giggling!

Beginners and many long time Eastie's & Westie's need to review this video albeit the sound. It teaches excellent basic techniques for all types of dancing except ballet:-) When the video first began with ECS, I thought what the heck! But it is an excellent way to teach WCS.
There are many folks teaching a bunch of pushing & pulling and lack of flexibility - otherwise known as swing! Before you spend a lot of money on lessons (sorry instructors!), spend some time with your 'partner' going over this video 3 or 4 times. Technically, this is a very professional approach. Kudos to both from FoOtLoOsE at starlitedance org.

An East Coast pair of triples is called prep in West Coast. You can start that way, send the lady out and get into your slot dance. It can help if you don't hear the rythm or phrasing of the music right at first, you can sway a bit, start with triples, then the send out.

This is more geared to East Coast swing. Also, from what I've learned, east coast can be danced with a triple, a tap and a step, or just a single step depending on the tempo of the song. If it's a fast song you don't have time to do a triple step.

Dave this the best West Coast Swing video I’ve found on UA-cam.
That said, your video could use more explanation concerning count (rhythm) vs. step (pattern), i.e. there are 8 steps in six counts. The four seconds, from 8:34 to 8:38, is all the time allotted to explain this important point. Prior to 8:34 you’re counting, 123, 123, 12. After 8:38 you’re counting 12, 34, 56. Dave, your “4 second” explanation/transition consists of, “And, we’re goin’ to count it as 12, 34, 56.” That explantation is obvious for an expert; not obvious at all for a beginner.
The index on the right side of the screen and their highlights are excellent.
    Thanks for a great video.

Don't let 6ct steps bother you because they stop in the middle of a musical measure. When you do another 6 ct step you then finish at the end of a measure. And later in WCS you will have 8 ct steps that work evenly. Then you will mix both 6 and 8 ct steps. After you've danced enough you won't even think about it. I direct music sometimes and it used to really bug me.

Shanon I totally agree with you Shanon , these instructors have a very good heart for trying their best to teach what they think to be a basic West Coast Swing dance lesson. It almost hurts to watch because of all the people watching that actually think this would help them learn to dance with others that West Coast Swing, I’ve been dancing over 25 years doing West Coast Swing, yes it comes from Lindy and may have started out in a similar situation back in the 1930’s . If any one of these instructors danced in any beginner West Coast Swing dance competition into a jack n Jill with someone they didn’t know the other person would not be able to dance West Coast Swing with them, yes they might be able to dance but it definitely wouldn’t be a West Coast Swing dance:)))
