Hi, great to watch your video. Here are all your doubts explained. The underground passage is to get to the other side, to avoid the traffic. We don't have the metro (subway), not for another ten years probably. SFRJ stands for what you said - the former Yugoslavia. The small Republic you didn't know was Montenegro, and the other one you didn't know is Vojvodina - an Autonomous Province in Serbia. We eat a lot of meat, yes. I think what you had was mashed potatoes and goulash. "Destroyed it", haha. Loved that one. Yes, the cars honking were for the wedding. They usually get noisy. It is the opposite order of colors to the Russian flag, that may have gotten you confussed. Both flags are in use. Ideally, the "state flag" is supposed to be used only by the bodies of the state, but people use it also. The fountain is just regular tap water which you have in the hotel or apartment also. It's safe to drink. Republic Square it is. The Croats claim Nikola Tesla, but in 1991 they blew up his statue in Gospic, Croatia... and now they put him on the metal coins of the euro (the euro cents) issued by the Croatian National Bank. I hope my answers were helpful.

Great video! Hi from a Belgradian :) That was Republic square, with the great monument in the center or the square. Revolution square is a bit further away. We are Christian ortodox. We light candles in the upper part with prayers for our dear ones to be healthy, in piece, and in the lower part for the ones who are no longer with us, so they have their peace in heaven. St. Sava temple is second largest temple or a church in the world. If you decide to pay a visit to it, go to the underground floor, where it is magical to witness the beauty it holds. The two countries you couldn't remember are Montenegro and Vojvodina. Many Serbs and other nationalities, for that matter, visit the amazing Montenegrian coast, seaside every year. Cheers to your positive outlook on our city, where you can find many beauties. It is also a hometown of The Great Novak Djokovic. He owns a restaurant in New Belgrade, maybe you should pay a visit to it too. :) As a woman born in Belgrade, I say this was a great video, full of positivity and i wanted to pay my respects by answering to some of your questions, but also to the fact you read some history prior to your visit. Enjoy your stay. :)
French fries not really part of our cuisine, but it is a part of every restaurant menu. But we do like potatoes in general 😊 In my household growing up, we rarely ever ate fried potatoes in any shape, but mashed potatoes or baked in the oven was definitely pretty common with meats or goulash.
Brother potatoes are absolutely the best I think I saw in a magazine that Serbian people like it the most But yeah I agree, FF arent really a bog part of most households You can boil them, mash them, bake them, put them into soups and stuff, you can fill other vegetables with it during meat fasting (post idk ako sam ubo na engleski..)
Thanks for making this video mate, you did your research well and I like your laid back style. Much appreciated! I hope you found Old Karaburma a good place to stay, as it is not the usual tourist choice, haha
Hello Sly, Regarding the religion question 12:12 Yes, Serbs are in majority Orthodox Christians. The place for candles is meant for both, the dead and living. At the top you light candles for the living. At the bottom you light candles for the dead. So, you must light a separate candle for the living and for the dead. Each candle you light represents one individual.
a Year ago I was at SFRJ restaurant, and I can tell you, the food was freaking delicious. The ambient was so retro and had that Jugoslavija vibe all around it
About the flags you mentioned. Flag without the crest is the people's flag, which every citizen can use and put on their homes or anywhere. Flag with crest is the state flag, which is usually used on state buildings and in state affairs P. S. Citizens sometimes use state flag too, so it can be confusing sometimes
12:34 first you light a candle down for the dead (family members and friends ) to remember them, and then you light candle up for the health and happines for a living (family members and friends).
Flags without the amblem (coat of arms) are national people's flags, with amblem is official state flag, and the flag with cross with 4C is people's Church flag.
I have no idea if we are talking about the same place. I used to live in Belgrade for a year back in the day and couldn’t wait to go back. For example Novi Sad a city 67 km NW from Bgd is way nicer and way more livable)
“.. ali i onda, kad cela planeta zaboravi kavgu plemena i boj, kad iščezne tuge i laži busija, opevaću tad, svom dušom poeta, šesti deo Zemlje pod imenom Rusija” (Sergej ❤ Jesenjin, oko 1925)
@6:40 - Flags you see without emblem are for civilian use, and is exactly the same as Russian flag, just upside down. State flag (as in government use) has a an emblem, like one you saw a minute after, that is on offices of a national bank building. and national museum a bit later - a white two-headed eagle, also similar with Russian coat of arms, except we have "ocilo" (traditional Serbian symbol, cross and four "C"), while Russians have St. George on horse instead. As for Tesla, he was a Serb, yes, and at that time Croatia didn't exist, it was Austrro-Hungary. Later on,. Croats killed between 81 and 90 Tesla's relatives in his hometown, on basis of religion (Nikola's father was an Orthodox priest) and hatred towards Serbs, leaving total of 500+ slaughtered, including 27 babies before babtism, and 135 children, and also leaving no Teslas left in his place of birth. To say Nikola Tesla has anything to do with Croats is beyond sacrelige, hypocrisy and pure inquisition, Nazi evil of what Croatia is founded on.
@@sasho888prm No, real Serbs don't travel to Croatia even if they would be paid to go. Fake Serbs go there sometimes ang get beaten and cars destroyed (I wouldn't let them back anyway). Serbs don't go to Bulgaria because of horrible massacres Bulgars did to Serbs in WW1, while Bulgars were on Nazi side. Serbs go mostly to Greece and somewhat to Montenegro for holidays.
The deal with our flag without emblem is a "people's flag" and we say that red colour is representing blood, blue is for water, and white is for freedom
Congratulations! Love your infos and explanations.. you seem very educated, love your presentation.. have you been to Budapest, Hungary yet? Visited in June, it was absolutely amazing! Highly recommend to you.
Comfort food? Maybe the mashed potatoes are comfort food, but that dish is probably beef goulash. That's not junk or processed food like mac and cheese.
Song playing in the background at the restaurant is one of my favourites, from a Croatian singer. Love the fact that they are ok playing all good Music
Tesla was born in area today known as Croatia. But at the time, Croatia didn't exist. He was born in Austrian empire. His parents were Serbs, his father was priest in Serbian Orthodox Church. During WW2 all of his relatives in Smiljan village where he was born were killed by Croats Nazis Ustashe because people of that village were Serbs and Orthodox. So, calming that Tesla was a Croat is wrong on so many levels. Also, another reason why birth place don't mean anything: There were like 19 Roman emperors born on the area today knows as Serbia. No Serb claim they were Serbs.
We are Orthodox and what you saw is a place where we can light up the candles. The candles on top are for the living, and below are for the deceased. We usually light the candles for both the living (for health) and deceased (for them to rest in peace).

I literally can't believe that you found yourself in front of the second largest Orthodox church in the world (and by many standards, the largest) without going inside for even a minute, if nothing else you see the magnificent and largest mosaics in the world.
It would be like walking past the Sistine Chapel and not even looking at it, and a lot of people come to the Vatican just for it :(
But I sincerely hope that you will have the opportunity to be in front of the Church of St. Sava again and this time look inside, if not for any religious reasons, then certainly at least for artistic reasons.
All the best!!!
You can't just walk past Sistine Chapel.
You need to pay addmitance and wait in an endless line.
Yeah, difference here is that is entrance in St. Sava temple free, as it should be to any church 😑
@@NijeLoseABiceiGore Maybe it is free, you have to pay to get into Vatican pass the St.Peter's

I really dont care, but he is missing an experience, considering that Serbian churches have beautiful frescas (idk if I spelled that one right), icons, atmosphere.
They are so beautiful inside I feel bad for him missing the opportunity to check it out
Next time go inside the St. Sava temple... it's quite beautiful inside. Also check out the part of the city called Zemun.
Zemun je toliko sranje da nema dalje

I visited Belgrade in June 2022. I took a Soviet airplane to Serbia 🇷🇸. Don’t forget to visit the fortress.
Soviet planes don't fly for a long time now to Serbia. Don't know which one you flew but not Soviet for sure. Unless it is some cargo Illushin or Antonov...
@@stevannikolovski probably, it was an old airplane.
The lunch meal looked good, but $26 struck me as expensive 🤷♂️
Thanks for uploading bro. Am visiting this week, it looks lovely there!!
Great video, informative & good vibe. Subscribed
As a woman born in Belgrade, I say this was a great video, full of positivity and i wanted to pay my respects by answering to some of your questions, but also to the fact you read some history prior to your visit. Enjoy your stay. :)
French fries not really part
of our cuisine, but it is a part of every restaurant menu. But we do like potatoes in general 😊 In my household growing up, we rarely ever ate fried potatoes in any shape, but mashed potatoes or baked in the oven was definitely pretty common with meats or goulash.
Brother potatoes are absolutely the best
I think I saw in a magazine that Serbian people like it the most
But yeah I agree, FF arent really a bog part of most households
You can boil them, mash them, bake them, put them into soups and stuff, you can fill other vegetables with it during meat fasting (post idk ako sam ubo na engleski..)
Cool place
It was, but it's failing FAST. We are colonized and the government is corrupt beyond repair. Troubling times ahead...
@@user-xl8sp8ir8j hm. I didn't know. I read this city name in books about WW2 most was written by Russian Soviet Union people

Dobro Jutro bro :) cuidate Hermano
Looks beautiful and clean.
Sly my favourite brave solo traveller . more blessings🎉
Hello Sly,
Regarding the religion question 12:12
Yes, Serbs are in majority Orthodox Christians.
The ambient was so retro and had that Jugoslavija vibe all around it
I plan to come here!
Belgrade metro has been planned for more than 50 years.
The woman's there look good 👍
About the flags you mentioned. Flag without the crest is the people's flag, which every citizen can use and put on their homes or anywhere. Flag with crest is the state flag, which is usually used on state buildings and in state affairs
P. S. Citizens sometimes use state flag too, so it can be confusing sometimes
12:34 first you light a candle down for the dead (family members and friends ) to remember them, and then you light candle up for the health and happines for a living (family members and friends).
Good video, all info is correct, kudos to you, you have your history facts right. 👍
Flags without the amblem (coat of arms) are national people's flags, with amblem is official state flag, and the flag with cross with 4C is people's Church flag.
Why didn't you enter the Saint Sava Temple?
he's the devil. here, the answer you wanted

I have no idea if we are talking about the same place. I used to live in Belgrade for a year back in the day and couldn’t wait to go back. For example Novi Sad a city 67 km NW from Bgd is way nicer and way more livable)
🙂❤👍 Thank You Shy Safe Travels 🙂❤👍
The flag without the emblem is Republika Srpska a Serbian state in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina
“.. ali i onda, kad cela planeta zaboravi kavgu plemena i boj, kad iščezne tuge i laži busija, opevaću tad, svom dušom poeta, šesti deo Zemlje pod imenom Rusija” (Sergej ❤ Jesenjin, oko 1925)
BRAVO!! You have to visit Zemun, the best part of Belgrade, good food, music, people, view, Danube,
zemun is not belgrade
50 minute walk sounds cool.
Not in this heat.
Craziest thing - when he said he'll walk, bus station that would take him 95% of the way home was just around the corner.
And yet Serbs still travel to Croatia but avoid Bulgaria at all costs 😂
@@sasho888prm No, real Serbs don't travel to Croatia even if they would be paid to go. Fake Serbs go there sometimes ang get beaten and cars destroyed (I wouldn't let them back anyway). Serbs don't go to Bulgaria because of horrible massacres Bulgars did to Serbs in WW1, while Bulgars were on Nazi side. Serbs go mostly to Greece and somewhat to Montenegro for holidays.
Hey you were in my neighborhood at the start of the video! :D
Oh damn this was 1 month ago. Hope you had a good time, it's rough out here but we treat foreigners better than we treat ourselves.
Живела Бања Лука и београд
Love the fact that they are ok playing all good
Music
6:10 a massive young boy!! At least 2,5 metres! Unreal!! 👏
Bout to be out there in a couple days yeeaaa! In Kragujevac Right now.
Welcome!
Did you go to Novi Pazar as well? Greetings from Connecticut 🇺🇸
Oh I advise you to visit Novi Sad. The fortress there is amazing, you won't regret. I've been there couple days ago ☺
We are Orthodox and what you saw is a place where we can light up the candles. The candles on top are for the living, and below are for the deceased. We usually light the candles for both the living (for health) and deceased (for them to rest in peace).
