This was one of the better summaries I've heard in under twenty-five minutes. I look forward to the rest. You may consider adding a video on the most common straw man attacks used against Calvinists, for example, "Calvinists don't evangelize", and the one you mentioned "God forces people to be saved against their will". Similar to that one is "Calvinists believe God denies people who want to be saved". Some other straw men as runners up: "Calvinists believe people are robots", "Calvinists believe God is the author of sin", and "Calvinists worship John Calvin". My sons were teens when we adopted the doctrines of grace (coming out of the IFB). So, I wrote them something to slip in their bible and study so they could learn how to answer these straw men. We had been closet Calvinists for a little while. Thanks again for the video! Good job.

@@truthseeker5698 Calvinism doesn't harden. It breaks a man's pride completely, leaves him naked and open as a wicked sinner in the presence of a holy God. It softens the heart and causes the will to yield in submission to an omnipotent God. It does this and has done this very thing for thousands of years, even before Calvin was born, going back to Augustine's day. It did this to Spurgeon, John Gill, B.B. Warfield, Evangelist George Whitefield, all of the Puritans, Jonanthan Edwards, and the list of some of the most notable names among theological giants throughout church history who were used mightily to combat theological liberalism, used to usher in the 1st Great awakening and 2nd Great awakening (the overwhelming numbers of preachers during this time were reformed). It was the 1st Great awakening (The Reformation), i.e. reformers, that brought human history out of the dark ages of the apostasy of the Roman Catholic Church and established expository preaching as the norm, which ushered thousands upon thousands into the kingdom of Christ through mass conversions, many of whom were martyred for their refusal to deny Christ or His Gospel which they preached.

Yes Reformed preachers preach the whole counsel of God. They preach scripture as a whole not just a select part of Scripture. This is why expository preaching is so necessary in the church today. Topical sermons tend to leave out parts of scripture that people don't want to hear because it makes people uncomfortable or it's too complicated or it's too controversial.

When my boys were younger, I taught them the doctrines of grace, but we simply called it "Theocentric soteriology". I wanted them to know how to defend Calvinism without really knowing the term. I mean, who would take issue with theology that is more God-centered!? Ha! Since we were IFB, this term enabled them to know how to defend the view without the title. I taught them that we believe in "Big-God-little-man" theology while some believe in "Big-Man-little-god" theology. Now that we're not in the IFB, we just use the term "Calvinistic" because it's easier, or simply the "Doctrines of Grace". It's nice to not need to hide it now.

Looking forward to this series. As a non Calvinist I appreciate this broken down format to check my own understanding of Calvinism.
I’m really not sure what all the eye rolling about provisionism is going to accomplish. It’s not an incredibly complicated system, it’s not that poorly defined (though it is a broad group). The only practical difference between Provisionism and Arminianism is the former doesn’t hold to Total Depravity. That’s just the classical syngerist view (John Cassian’s Conference 13 is basically just the provisionist view of grace and human responsibility). Calvinists tend to act like provisionism is some radical new idea dreamed up by Leighton, but it just seems to be a systemized version of what people like Adrian Rogers and Billy Graham were teaching (uncontroversially) in the 20th century. It would probably be more helpful to just treat it the same way you treat Calvinism and Arminianism, without the unnecessary hand waiving.

      Never is election about salvation.

    • @josephkearns3999
      @josephkearns3999 12 днів тому

@@truthseeker5698 Oh really? Let's examine the verdict of the Scriptures.
Ephesians 1:4-6 -- "Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him in love, by predestining us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He graciously bestowed on us in the Beloved."
Sounds like salvation to me. "Adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself" is a soteriological statement. Don't believe me, let's find another passage. Consider Romans 8:29-30 -- "Because those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers; and those whom He predestined, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified; and those whom He justified, He also glorified." Romans chapters 9-11 also has various mention of divine election/predestination. It is a debated passage, but I do believe the context to be discussing the Jews in relation to God's redemptive plan, set in motion before the foundation of the world (John the Baptists' words, not mine).
Still don't believe me? How about another, from the mouth of the Lord. Consider his words in John 6:44-45 -- "Jesus answered and said to them, 'Stop grumbling among yourselves. No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, "AND THEY SHALL ALL BE TAUGHT BY GOD." Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.'"
Election is about salvation. When Peter addresses the believers he is talking to, he address them as the "elect." He is talking to those who have been saved. I have given you Scripture, so that is the end of this conversation. I will not be engaging in debate. The Bible says what it says, whether everyone likes it or not.

Great introduction to the Doctrines of Grace. One thing that can be said about Calvinism as a system is that there is NO OTHER theological system which seeks to strip man entirely of any glory whatsoever and instead seeks to seek ONLY the Glory of God for all of his work in redemption from beginning (before the foundation of the earth and universe) till his final triumph when Christ returns to gather all of his elect throughout history for the final battle and the final judgment of the wicked and their Father the devil.
When speaking of Calvin, American theological powerhouse B.B. Warfield said of Calvin, and I paraphrase, "If there is one trait Calvin possessed which characterized his entire life it is this, he had a holy jealousy for the glory of God in all things".His teaching wasn't the only thing that reflected this character trait. His personal walk with Christ as a husband, father, and pastor also exhibited it in spades. The volume of theological written works he produced, almost seemingly impossible for one man, have influenced Christians, theologians, and pastors for hundreds of years long after his death and are still influencing those same groups of people today. One cannot look at the life of Calvin and read his works and come away believing anything other than that he was a man who was completely sold out to Christ, the building up of His church, and furthering of His kingdom.

Stand firm on the word of God Pastor! People hate the truth, and they make a God in their own image. Nearly every page of the New Testament, and every chapter in the Old Testament affirms all 5 points of the Tulip and reformed theology. Once you see it, it can not be unseen. God is not evil! God is always good! God is just to do whatever he wills! He destroyed the world in a flood and chose only to save 8, and he was 10000% righteous in doing so!
What people fail to realize is every Baptist affirmed the Tulip through their confessions 200 years ago. The whole IFB movement is re-hashing old fights from church history, that our church fathers figured out hundreds of years ago.

Thanks, brother. You're a smart guy, so the fact that you have been through a lot of teaching on provisionalism and still hold to Calvinism is intriguing to me.
The main reason that I don't affirm Calvinism is that in my estimation, it seems to be built upon a lot of philosophical inference and logical extrapolations from ambiguous passages, in order to bring us to conclusions which contradict the plain sense of very clear passages.
It's not that the logic behind Calvinist systematics or their use of scripture is impossible, it's just not sufficiently justified in scripture, in my estimation, to warrant adopting it in the face of so many competing passages and scriptural themes or the other problematic implications it creates.
In other words, I will believe anything the Bible clearly and explicitly teaches, no matter how difficult it is for me to reconcile with my Notions of Justice or what a good God would/should do. But if I'm going to adopt a theological position that puts me in peculiar logical, moral, and philosophical quandaries, and which creates face value discrepancies with the rest of the Bible, I'm going to need to be dragged there kicking and screaming by inescapably clear and unavoidable statements in in the text... not complex and clever systematics on passages that can honestly and cohesesively be interpreted otherwise.
I do agree that this is an in-house discussion, and I appreciate your approach to the topic, as always.

If a Calvinist or a provisionalist is mean, does that make their theological system any more or less correct? Scripture is scripture, and that should determine what you believe. Not how a particular Christian treats you. Leighton flowers and this individual would be the first to admit they are sinners. That doesn’t mean their individual theological perspective is wrong. We weren’t called to sit on the throne of judgement. It’s literally not our job. I’m glad you’re figuring yourself out. I don’t know what I believe aside from I believe in God Almighty, He sent His Son here to die for me, Jesus obeyed and died for me (I’m forever grateful) and I’m going through a sanctification process to shed chains of sin and live more like Him. Theologically speaking, I’m a baby. I’m still learning a lot of these words which didn’t even come around till the 16th/17th century. From what I’ve read, I may be an Armenianist but I’m sure someone more knowledgeable than I could ask me a question and me answer in a way that would disqualify me from that too.

Thanks for your video. I look forward to your further videos on this topic. If I may, I have a few observations.
I appreciated your gentleness. The Church generally, and I personally have been blessed by people on both sides. There is no need to treat the other like the spawn of Satan.
Definitions and how both sides are explained are important. For example, I have heard explanations of Calvinism that make it as enjoyable as lying on a cold marble slab. Yet I have heard other explanations that are as inviting as a soft donna on a freezing night.
Regarding TULIP, I have heard other people argue that it is not a good approach to explain Calvinism. The acronym for example really only works in the English language.
For me, I have not come to a firm decision of where I stand (or sit) on the 5 points. I think Calvin is more right than wrong, but I do feel that Arminius raised some reasonable objections.

“מַחֲמַדִּים” is not Muhammad. Not even close. That name is not in the Hebrew Bible. Your assertion is total ignorance at best and a blatant lie at worst. I read and speak Hebrew. The word you falsely used means desirable. It is a masculine plural noun. It is not pronounced anything like Muhammad. Even your transliteration shows it. The Niqqud vowel pointing and the rules of Hebrew totally refute your assertion. Machmadim is a long way from Muhammad.
Not only do I know Hebrew, but I am learning Arabic and I have read the Quran. Sura 22:30 condemns lying and falsehoods. Sura 25:72 warns against false witness. Sura 39:3 says Allah does not guide a liar. Do you think Allah is going to accept you as a liar? Sura 39:3 says definitely not. I sincerely hope your statement was out of ignorance and not a lie. I pray you come to faith in Christ.

I was born and sprinkled into Calvinism through the Dutch Reformed church, but I learned later that I was predestinated NOT to be a Calvinist. Hallelujah! I am not an Arminian either because I reject that limited system of my freewill. The Arminian fails to rightly divide the word of truth of the Holy Bible. The Calvinist assigns unscriptural definitions to elect, predestination, and a certain flower, the TULIP. Paul wisely warned, "I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ."

One cannot be a (TRULY) born again believer and a believe in heresy. Just because you can’t agree with Calvinism it doesn’t make it a heresy. I don’t know why today anything that someone doesn’t agree with another is branded as heresy. We need to stop this. Calvinism is not a dogmatic belief system, but a interpretative theology that has been systematized. That’s why it’s called a Systematic Theology. Just as Arminianism, Provisionism, Molitists, etc. there are loopholes in all systems.(many will disagree there) Though I am currently very close to Wesleyan Arminianism, I still consider Calvinists brothers in Christ. There is so much all Christians actually agree with Calvinism. Where we disagree is mostly in the final conclusions of predestination and order of salvation. Even though we all still believe in predestination and that we can only be saved by Grace Through Faith. (I am not promoting relativism here, there is actually essential doctrines we all have to agree with to be considered Christians objectively)
I am past this childish fight, I was very opposed to Calvinism, and branded it heresy, but I now realized that there is so much we agree, and that we all agree in the essential doctrines of Christianity. Pastor Burris is an amazing Pastor and represented his position very well and in good faith. Let’s respect that.

@@pastorburris I'm not at all interested in the various theories on how the atonement works. What is penal substitutionary atonement in your view? That the actual punishment for all sins was actually meted out onto Christ by God? I'll admit that explanation certainly would be repulsive. But I neither know nor care about what your idea of how the atonement works is. If I had to guess at what my stance on how the atonement works would be I would guess satisfaction. But it looks like there's problems there too.
My rejection of Calvinism centers solely around its view of election. It's the doctrine of election that's awful and unbiblical. God did not predestine some to eternal life and others to eternal death. Or pass the others over, or however you want to state it. Everyone is elect because in most instances in scripture, the election is talking about God' invitation.
There are a few times when election is being used to mean those who have perfected their election by surrendering to God, repenting and having faith, but you can tell those times from the context.
But Calvinism's great (horrendous?) error is that it purports Paul and Jesus to be establishing the very doctrine that they both were demolishing. Because of a very distinct lack of understanding the 1st Century Jewish context, Augustine and the rest have cobbled together a theology based squarely on the foundation that Jesus and Paul were disavowing.

@ I really don’t like to argue, but those quotes say nothing about what you said in your post. There’s nothing about 70AD, lost tribes, election of only Jews, dispensationalism, or Zionism. Obviously I recognize the Micah quote as a prophecy of the coming of the Messiah. And the reference to the brothers returning, I guess you think that is a reference to the “Lost Tribes.” But hopefully you understand that there weren’t any “lost tribes.” 2 Kings 17 tells us exactly what happened to them. Some were dispersed among the nations, and others stayed in the region. Their descendants became the Samaritans. But where do you get this 70AD thing? What do any of those verses have to do with election of Israel or remnants? What do any of those verses have to do with dispensationalism or Zionism? And what does Jesus making his disciples “fishers of men” have to do with the election only of Jews? I’m even more confused now than I was about your first comment.
