Get better soon Heidi great vid Tom cheers
Seeing the calves coming up curiously reminded me of something. Anyone who says cows are stupid has never actually met a cow. They're not stupid, they're slow, there's a difference. Cows are actually quite smart, they just... take a while to think things over.
They are only smart when it comes to finding the gate that's not meant to be open 😂 they can be intelligent tbf I taught calves that when I whistle that I have ration or 'cake' for them and they come sprinting to me
@@jerryodriscoll3691 Or figuring out how to open the gate that's not supposed to be opened. They're good at that too!
@@jerryodriscoll3691 exactly! They're MUCH more intelligent than most people give them credit for. I may be a tiny bit prejudiced. I have had some of THE most wonderful cattle in my life to start me off, and keep me going. I always seem to "luck into" the greatest cattle beasts surrounding me. I🤷♀️ have no IDEA how, but I'm not going to question it either.💞 I certainly have had *more than* my fair share of wonderful animals to guide me in my life! I'm Sooo blessed!😍💐🤯
do I've almost always taught one or two to come when they're called, no matter where they are in the pasture. The BEST was an OLD cow, she'd start coming from the extreme farthest field(half a mile, we measured) and bellow to let me know she was on her way, lest I just leave and forget to give her those alfalfa cubes and sunflower seeds! Her calf would frequently stop her mid journey for a quick snack. But he was REALLY bringing her down. She was losing weight so badly that we determined this would be her last pregnancy. She wouldn't go out with the other cows next spring.(because that's where the bull pastures. And he'd cover her, and *I* won't sell a pregnant cow.
Too much chance a slaughter buyer will snag her! And that's just WRONG!
So she was separated from the other cows and pampered a bit to bring her weight back up from Jesse robbing her every chance he'd gotten all summer...and when given free choice and freedom from that little robber, she bloomed! Faster than expected, granted she WAS also getting a bit spoiled because both I and our youngest daughter(still at home, in her last year of high school) tended to melt when the old girl turned those liquid eyes on us, and we'd cave in, give her handfuls of black oil sunflower seeds, as well as breaking alfalfa cubes into flakes and pop those into her mouth. Especially when, after the first time she pulled my entire hand into her mouth for the last of the seeds, I realized she had worn her front teeth down BELOW her gum line! She wasn't just starving because she was feeding a very greedy calf, but what food she was getting wasn't getting chewed properly, and even the greenest of grass was hard for her to GET! So after that, it became standard to measure out two pails of alfalfa cubes and hang them near her stall, since she was being kept alone so she could eat and rest in private without being pushed around by the other cows...and everyone would feed her a bit when going near her....plus her regular ration. Same as the other cows. Except she wasn't competing for her's AND she was getting a LOT of supplementation! Her weight came back up to a healthy status...but she still seemed to struggle to keep it there. We blamed it on her age, now that we'd discovered her teeth and what THEY told us! I, of course hoped she'd present us with a daughter to replace herself with. She'd only ever had one female calf so far, unfortunately not the best specimen possible, but being her only daughter, she was kept as a replacement anyways, and like her mother, never brought in a poor calf come fall. She more than paid her way. So delivery day comes, and the old girl spits out a girl. A bit smaller than expected, but a fine, healthy girl! I'm happy enough to cry tears of joy...a girl stays to carry on! 9 hours later...she pops out another. A boy. Immediately. That joy turned to tears. Mixed twins, almost invariably means developmental problems in the female that render her infertile. I asked our vet if the large difference in birth times *may* have indicated a large difference between implantation times...and therefore a greater chance of placental non interaction, thusly, a better chance of no cross-over of hormones between the twins. He commented, " valid theory" easy way to check...and it was just a matter of seeing if her vagina developed beyond a short pouch, or ceased at 3-4 inches within her vulva. Unfortunately, she had a dead end.😪 the highs and lows of farming.😥 so, knowing she was feedlot bound, despite her mamma's best efforts, I didn't even bother naming her.🤷♀️🤦♀️🍹 everybody else did. Jack and jill...I just made sure her momma had the best(last) summer I could give her. And she left fat and shiny, along with 2 fat, shiny calves in the fall. With all the adoration she could sop up during her stay. She came to the farm as an old cranky cow, the Mr.. was actually cautious about going near her(seriously) and *we* got along because that was just how it was on my farm growing up. *Every animal* was a pet to some extent. It was drilled into me that while "they're livestock and going to be butchered someday. It's our responsibility to make sure the days they spend until then are the best they can have."
So I've taken that seriously ever since. People ask me how I can bring them into this world, often bottle feed them, love on them, name them, get attached to them, then load them onto trucks knowing what I'm sending them to...and my response is simply " I gave them the best life I could while they were in my care."
Much the same as my philosophy when working with racehorses. I can't fix every problem in the industry, but I *can* give them the best love * "I " * can when I'm with them. That's all I can do. And hope I can influence everyone else in their sphere to do the same. Those who weren't already.
@@highstandards6226 If every farmer was like you, battery farming wouldn't exist. I know people who wouldn't be vegetarian/vegan if all farmers were like you.
Get well soon H. Big happy birthday too you sweetie. Great work tom. Hope family are keeping well. X

ANOTHER good video into you’re working day, thanks Tom 🐄👍🚜
Must be handy having quiet calves for that job, us beef farmers have great fun playing 50/50 roulette of getting kicked in the face or not with calves 😂 Get better soon heidi! Also if you are stuck for videos because of the weather you could do a reading Instagram messages video should be interesting
we calf 400 dairy calves in 2 months and man id hate to have 400 beef calves about haha you are all nutters
@@TheMathedis what breeds do ye have?
@@jerryodriscoll3691 we have friesian, jersey cross friesian, montbelliard (only got montbelliard due to the high fertile rate. been trying to down breed them but they keep popping out haha)
@@TheMathedis friesen for milk quantity and Jersey for quality I assume? They dont make great cattle to rear for beef
@@jerryodriscoll3691 they are all technically cross bred for quality but we walk our cows a lot which naturally gives them quality milk rather than quantity. we sell to arla. also a farming connect show farm in the uk.
Love your videos. I’ve learned so much about farm life. You do a great job. From working as a farmer then make videos for your UA-cam channel.
Sam Stainer Hey. I make similar videos with my farm animals and I’m stuck on what I should make next. Any recommendations?
Rachel's Ark 1 video you could make is the day in the life of a farmer.
Oh those little ones are adorable!
great video tom the calves look great good work.
Happy Birthday Heidi
welcome back Hedi
Good job there
Good video Tom, nice to see you with the calves 👍
I don't know if you're looking for more video ideas, but I'd be interested in seeing how the milk gets processed to become other dairy products (cream, chocolate milk, butter, etc.) in your operation. Even if it's done by another party offsite, I think it might be interesting to see the rest of the process.
Happy birthday heidi get better soon
I really like Heidi. Her personality fits in well with everyone. Do interns work a certain number of school semesters (I’m not sure if that’s what you call it in the UK) or does each situation determine how long a student intern is there? I think working at your place would be fun, especially since you do a lot of things old school, the tried and true method. Heidi, I hope you get well soon. They need you
Great video once again 👌🏼👌🏼
Get well soon Heidi, another great little vid Tom!
Tom u are a legend!🐂🐂🔥🔥
Farmer James Agri Hey. I make similar videos with my farm animals and I’m stuck on what I should make next. Any recommendations?

Great video. Have you decided what to do with the Highlands???
I think they're thinking about ai and follow up with neptune probably
In tonight's news: young farmer and his intern bludgeoned to death by a small group of overly interested calves. Full story at seven.
Oh... have I got a rebuttal for THAT ONE! Involved a husband with a particular fetish, his wife and several girlfriends who all got together, found out about each other, and didn't take kindly to the knowledge of his lying, cheating ways...decided on a very "fitting" punishment for him...
Awe poor Charlie has been colored blue.... yeah glad the other calf eye better!
Great job!😜
Puppy Dog calves...very cute
Good calves 😀
Is that ringworm on calf 102899 and if so how do you guys deal with it?
