And yes, you are one of the luckiest people! I worked at a riding stable once a week working off my lessons quite a few years ago. It was hard work, but those were the best days of my life!!! Just like the farm, hundreds of jobs to be done! Spring and fall were my favorite times.
No matter how many times I moved the electric fences at home, my dad was never happy with my method of moving it - cows never went through any of them! Another great video from yourself and the ginger warrior - keep up the good work Tom
For your fencing reel: It looks like the shaft goes all the way through. You could weld a piece of 5/16" steel rod on the end opposite the crank handle and use a cordless drill as another poster suggested. By adding the rod, you don't need to cut off the handle so you can still do it the old way if necessary and keep the ginger warrior happy ;-)
Hey tom, love the videos. Was wondering if you could do a field tour video? Like a shot of each field and say what you tend to use them for? Like bales, grazing and/or silage etc - sorry just tend to get confused to which is which
When I was 16 I learned to drive (on our farm in co durham) on the very same model tractor your driving. and I'm now 69....bl......y amazing how they've lasted these old tractors. ..best wishes from dave

Ginger warrior touching the fence. “Ooh, you get a nicer shock There”. Me touching the fence. Jumping around like a madman flapping my hands about. Electric fences, seperating the men from the warrior.
Hi tom i enjoy your videos you know that mesh thing you found in your last video maybe you could use it to keep animals of vegetable patches by removing some of the mesh. Stay safe - Jim
Great video tom as always, we have a paddock system here for the last 20yrs and the ability to subdivided them with white wire reels if needs be , great control. Your dad is brilliant
Put the fencing posts in a barrel, one of those blue plastic ones. Place them them along todays main fence, two barrels and a beercart , if the neighbours don't have sticky fingers. Make moving easier!
Lay the reel on its side on the ground and put the hook on a standard (post) ....easy to roll the wirer out without it creating a birds nest..... and yes you do have it upside down so if a cow hits the fence they can knock the reel off the permanent fence
We used to play EFC(Electric Fence Chicken), basically who could hold onto the fence the longest, the other kids hadn't figured out that the tighter you hold it the less shock you got. Although best laugh was when one of the bulls licked the dam thing, don't think hed seen one before. Oh an you never mentioned you wanted a Ford truck!!!
It always makes me chuckle when you test the fence like that. We’ve always used a tester but I’m probably not as tough as you Northern lads. Great videos.
Hi Tom you want cut handel off and ues a battery drill to wind up the wire. When I was on a sheep farm we had a small trailer wich you but the wire on to unwind the wire and roll it in and you could put all your posts in and keep all fencing kit in that trailer all the time. Hich and go. Great video
Good video Tom, managing grazing, always a joy.... Not. 😄 Buggered if I would touch our electric fence, it runs off the mains with two 4’ scaffold poles driven in the stream bed for its Earth. We ran electric all down one side of the ground so we can pinch a feed anywhere if we need to close off any bits for a rest, no batteries to run flat or grow legs, and a belt that keeps everything in.... or out. 😄
Dont know how youve done it Tom without a geared reel. Its just an idea for you, we always put electric fence up 1 or 2 fields in front of the cows, So when the guy who brings them in on a night only has to take up the fence from that day and move the ticker to the next fence. saves us putting fences up every day, all done for a week ten days
Hey Tom, get that old reel and peg it into the ditch, if you wanna get good at managing grass you got to give yourself a chance, geared reels and simple pigtails. If it’s easy done you’ll enjoy it and do it better.
I've binge watched so many now I feel part of the family lol. Never been on a farm but stangely addictive to watch, If they did a farmers day experience I'd have a go.
1:10 red cow big udder - right back leg limping - needs to be look at - I grew up on a dairy farm amount other things - as a kid on the farm we used Gallagher in New Zealand as it is a New Zealand company who designed the first electric fence system in the late 1930's now an international company here is where to buy in the UK www.electricfence-online.co.uk/electric-fencing/gallagher-fencing/page2.html
Christa Inglis Gallagher has a great livestock management program, RFID ear tags, etc. can keep track of all kinds of events, for bigger operations than Tom’s. I’ve got a Gallagher charger on my 1/4 acre horse pasture, in the US.
@@TomPembertonFarmLife not picking wholes just saw she was limping - coming from a farming back round there is a lot of looking at cows sheep etc and strangely their back end
We use the plastic posts but do you rap the fence around the post twice to stop it coming out we do it every 2 or 3 posts for extra strength and stops it from being slack
I love your videos we do grass-fed organic in the United States we are lucky that we haven't had to dump our milk with the coronavirus pandemic going on. We are a small family farm it's my fiance myself and his cousin my fiance and I have two children together they are six months and 2 yrs. I hope to be able to pass on our farm to our children.it is nice to see other people who have small family farms and not the big factory farms.
I live in Iowa. My favorite dairy is family owned...Picket Fence Creamery. They have Jersey cows. We buy all our cream and cheese curds from them. What state are you in? Prayers your farm stays in your family for generations!
Love ur vids tom, your dad is great too but as many of the commenters have already said ur farm is a bit behind in grass management in terms of not having paddocks and pads etc, your farm is ideal for paddocks as no roads through farm and could get so much more grazing if ye sectioned paddocks and strip grazed every day. Not easy to get auld fella's to change from what they know but if ye ever wanted to boost production then paddocks should be a goal, here in ireland we have dairy groups that farmers get incentives to be a part of and you go on farm walks of each others farms and get to view how other farmers run their farms, highly recommend trying it if ye have something similar in the uk.
When I think about it, cows were in a field grazing. Thats it. Dull personality. Now that Im watching your channel Tom Ive been so wrong. They have their own little personalities. They obviously trust you loads, you understand and care for them, they really are happy cows. Im learning 😀😀🍀💚🍀
Get a digital fence tester of fleebay £25 tests the output and your fencer battery. grass is ok but it won’t find the dull points in your fence. I have fixed a few probs with mine = less cow outage 😊
Investment in fencing, water system and roads is the best money you will spend on the farm tom, if I were you I would be investing in the grazing infrastructure before buying the big tractor. Love the channel, you and your dad are a great team, 👌👍👍
Those cows look amazing! Ask Graeme Parker for help with the drone 😊. I was just watching one of his older videos. Compared to today.... Wow, he's got skills! 🎥
There’s probably a bolt holding reel crank on. Take handle off reinstall bolt and use cordless drill and socket. Use used rubber inflation cups as a friction device to keep tension on wire, to keep a tight reel!👍
The wire fence reminds me of a story about my grandpa who was a farmer. Electric fences were new back in his day and he didn’t think it would keep cows or horses in a pasture. While at a neighbors farm that had several of them he decided to take a pee and did so across the electric fencing. Let’s just say he became a believer in the new fencing and never peed close to an electric fence again. 😂
Hi Tom and Ginger warrior.Great video as usual. Love watching the cows walking about. Did you find out what made the cows run...???. How is the littlest lambs doing please..???
Tom you should put electric fences around all your grazing paddocks and stop us battery fences as the power from the mains is stronger and used geared reels and pigtail post are the best I find
Hi tom I'm in new Zealand few tips I could give ya with the break feeding is maybe try doing it length ways with paddock and shift daily to keep cows off regrowth one idea we use to identify if there is surplus for cutting silage is if you have five days feeds in front of them it's enough to cut. leave the cows abit to keep going like your doing.we aim to be on 29day day ration with our grass. Maybe invest in hand held eletric fence tester and test at far end of reel from unit need at least 3kv to keep them in I put standards out at 20 steps with no problem. Dont worry bout troughs they'll walk back to shed for drink or get attachment to trough and run out 100m of 25ml alcathine to 44gal drum cut in half with bore cock valve and can shift this to new breaks and keep back fence up for regrowth

🤣🤣🤣 You are right Tom I can't resist commenting on your electric fencing. You'll grow so much more grass by fencing off the first field by the yard. 👍
