I was playing a Vengeance Paladin with a Sailor background before. He was on a trading ship and his friends/crewmates were slaughtered and he was left alive to tell the tale to others and raise fear of this pirate crew on the seas. Instead the man took the idea of getting revenge on the pirates instead. He eventually was referred to as Captain Smitey by local port towns.
Darth Vader is the perfect example of an Oathbreaker Paladin. In fact, Lord Soth of Ravenloft, the first Death Knight, was directly inspired by Lord Vader Dark Lord of the Sith. Thank Vader for Death Knights.
My first Paladin was a 2nd Edition Paladin and the rules, and restrictions were intense. What it came down to was technicalities and careful navigation of other players. It was damn near impossible to allow a Rogue in the group but if he was our party's Locksmith then it was easier for me to remain Lawful Good. He was not brought along for his thieving skills, rather for his ability to manage locks, doors, traps, and anything that a Locksmith may encounter. Paladins are a personal favorite class and am going to enjoy trying out the 5th Edition version soon.
my first character ever was a paladin of Zeus in 3.5 (and before you ask yes zeus is CG and it didn't make sense for there to be a paladin in the service of a CG Deity, it was allowed because of DM) I never found it to be restricting, as the paladin I was allowed to work with rouges, beguilers and the such, and I had no problem with them what so ever. I think the paladin's restriction is only as bad as the DM handling a the paladin's tenets. You CAN have a thief in the party, they're needed for traps and scouting, as well as unlocking doors and chests to be able to retrieve items of import, and paladins can be sneaky. At one point we had to deal with a demilich, but as we were planing on how to deal with it, I (as the paladin) came up with a plan to skull-nap him, and place him under a sphere of destruction, and watch as he floats up into the sphere with no hope of evade it. BTW the limitations of a paladin states you CAN'T commit dishonorable, or evil acts. Working with a thief ISN'T dishonorable, sneaking around to save an innocent ISN'T Dishonorable, working with a vampire to stop mindflayers ISN'T evil (though you do need to be careful to let them KNOW that if they commit any evil acts the paladin WILL smite them.) Lawful GOOD isn't Lawful STUPID.
I’m playing a paladin of vengeance in my current game named St Vincent, & he’s lawful good but not lawful nice. He’s a scourge aasimar, is more like the doomslayer, & isn’t holier than thou. I wanted him to be your atypical paladin so I gave him the criminal background, & so he was in prison but while in prison, the goddess of vengeance, nemesis visited him & offered to free him in turn for his services, & he had a strict disdain for fiends & evil, so he was like “hell’s yea.” Hence why he’s called saint because he was visited by a goddess. He’s my favorite character by far. He’s super tanky, & I only took one homebrew feat which was Titan’s Grip, so he one hands a greatsword & hits super hard. So much fun.
Loved the Lantern Corps reference! I am playing an Aasimar Paladin right now who is very explicitly Blue Lantern-based. Lots of saying "all will be well."
A paladin used to be more like a prestige class: it had strict prerequisites and roleplay restrictions because it had essentially all the same abilities as the fighter, plus magic.
I feel the fact that 5E makes paladins more like divine champions than outright holy warriors is better because a paladin is able to be any alignment depending on their cause or oath along with any dieties they serve.
I played a chaotic evil Orc conquest Paladin of Gruumsh. I spent much of the campaign burning villages and extorting money with my horde. My oath was to hate and attack elves unconditionally. We had a scroll that was written in elvish and we needed it translated. I killed the elf who could have helped us for no reason at all, other than to fulfill my oath. I don't think we ever translated that scroll.
In a one-shot I multiclassed a Conquest pala/Fiendlock. He was a veteran soldier, who because of his age wasn't allowed to fight anymore. Since fighting was all he knew, though, he made a pact with Zariel and became a Hellknight. I just like the combination of Conquest Pala + Fiendlock's temp hp on kill. Adding invocations to that, makes it even better. You can even use disguise Self to make yourself look like a medium sized devil.
I think Batman is Lawful Good, but he follows a moral law and not the “law of man,” as it were. He’s a zealous, LG Vengeance Paladin that is the moral arbiter of Gotham. Or, at least, he thinks he is.
As far as Oath of Ancients is concerned I believe its abilities are taken from the Warden of 4th edition. I also think Oath of Ancients follow more the Blue Lantern Corps.
In one of my games I had this kid who was playing a rogue but he died and rolled up a new character which was basically just his rogue in full plate. His paladin kept walking away from the party and from combat so he really wasn't helpful and then he gained a flesh golum for a son and it's terrible
I dont think you need to play lawful. My pally is a champion of freedom and life and light. Sometimes shes an arse intimidating people to get what she needs to do the greater good. She breaks the rules so many times, but she aims to preserve her world against a plane melter lich.
Joan of Arc is a real life Paladin. The crusaders are Paladins. Captain America is just a Lawful Good Battle Master with steroids. Jaime Lannister is a Lawful evil Paladin. Silver Surfer is more like a Paladin. Guan Yu from Dynasty warrior is a Paladin turned God. Yes some Chinese people actually pray to him.

That's awesome! I love paladins that are outside the normal run of the mill holy men!
CASTLEREDFOX captain smitey!! Yes amazing name
I cited you in a Reddit post.
@@gohantanaka wow cool! Would you mind sharing the link? I'd love to show my DM and party! It's been years!

Im gunna say Lawful Neutral

Just found your site....awesome thanks for your insights
I’m currently running a Lawful Evil oath of conquest paladin who is under an arch devil of war
I just realized that Samara from Mass Effect 2 is basically a Paladin in a way.
Batman is a sneaky Paladin/Monk

I've played a chaotic good paladin. I did this by making him stupid and oblivious. His wisdom and intelligence are both negatives and its so much fun.
I legit am about to roll a Paladin with a vow to Yeenoghu who aspires to become a Gnoll
YAY i can't wait to play a benevolent bugbear!!
You look exceptionally handsome today Brian! hee hee As always, Great Show! 123 Mama
I know this video has been up for a while, but I am curious, what are your thoughts on a Drow paladin that is dex based and serves Lolth?
Dont see a problem
I dont think you need to play lawful.

Why does your paladin sound like ghostrider to me?
I have always seen him as more of a Dr. Doom, but he definitely has Ghostrider qualities.
Mmm why do i think their rest involves restorative herbs :)
Paladin Alexander Anderson good ranged paladin
Captain America = Fighter / Thor = Paladin
Joan of Arc is a real life Paladin. The crusaders are Paladins.

Actual the real paladins were a special tier of royal guards created by Charlemagne.
