- If you’d like to train your dog to walk beside you on a leash without pulling, you are in the right place. There is one mistake that most people make when they are training walking on lead, and that is overwhelming their dog. In dog training lingo, we call it “lumping”. Once you understand how to split a behaviour down, you will have success and quickly stop your dog from pulling on leash.

When I first met my favourite dog 9 years ago, he was under stimulated, and he had NO idea about how to walk on a loose leash, and I had NO idea about how to teach him not to.
I had read the book written by Turid Tugaas about What to do when the dog pulls in the leash. Actually I had read it twice, but my favourite doghadn’t read it even once. All HE wanted to read was that wonderful world lying out there.
By then I didn’t know what to do, but one thing I knew: I would NOT allow him to pull on a leash and find out that it was OK 🛑
So I got an idea, and every day I put him in the care, and we drove to a huge wonderful fenced dog forest, and here we walked together without a leash. We gained confidence, and he had the opportunity to investigate this wonderful world and socialise with other dogs. And only every 30th time he came back to me, I would put the leash on him and only for a very short time.
We did that at least 5 times a week and for at least one year.
It worked perfectly, and now he is a STAR in walking without a leash, but on the other hand, he doesn’t mind getting the leash on. No big deal, all we have to do is to say LEASH, then he stops, and we put it on. But ONLY in areas without traffic. When we walk in traffic, he is always leashed, but he know ALL the right behaviour from our training without the leash.
Had I known Susan Garrett by then, we could have done it much faster, but it was a pleasure doing it anyway. Especially the bonding and confidence building. Enjoying life together 💕
So all I can say is: This is just about the most important video I have seen from Susan Garret 🤗

I don't know how many videos I already watched, I'm so excited! I have a 15 months old mixed breed (Boxer/Shepherd/Rottweiler), my third dog and the most challenging so far. She's easily aroused, especially when we go to class, then she cannot control her emotions anymore, I get frustrated and she gets worse - obviously!! I started applying some of your training tips, already with success! Now I just have to be careful not to start LUMPING again!! 🙂Thank you!!

Well okay, challenge ON! My german shepherd is three years old now, and he is great in SOME environments, but in some situations, he still pulls. I'll give this a college try and report back! Thank you!
Very good challenge! We just paced up and down the back driveway and zero movement if dog was not in position. Going forward is also a reward.

I cannot have my gsp with nothing on ie leash or longe. I can not expect her to walk in a heel position. She can comply but that gsp nose carries her away.

I always taught my dogs to go behind me to change sides when walking. It's seems odd to have them rush to get around me or have me stop to accommodate the movement. 🤷♀️ I walked with my 2 dogs in a brace (on or off leash) and when we were to pass someone (with or without a dog) I asked my dogs to pass behind me to the other side usually walking on the grass. If the path was narrow they would just walk behind me. It seems the most logical.
Was listening in car so rewatched and will start this but because Gemma is reactive do Reinforcement Zone with deli roast beef so know it works. God bless you for Recallers. Such a Great Course. Again will work on this but also got to do more Perch Work too❤❤❤❤⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Interesting that people worry about the exercise walks. I live in the city, and sometimes its either too cold or too hot to get to the park or farther. I found that lots of these games plus a bit of tug or fetch indoors made the dogs waaaay more tired than even a long walk. Its mental work as well as physical. Try puppy push ups of they have energy to burn. 😘
Great advice and good challenge but what do you do when you have to walk your dog in the city for their elimination needs? No distractions would be great but some live in the city without fenced areas (other than dog parks which are a bad decision). Any advice?
Do you add a cue for this? Like heel?
This could not have been more on target for exactly what we needed at this moment. We've been using a head halter now for about a month, but we are still having to do lots and lots of circles in the beginning of the walk to keep him from going ahead of me. After about 15 minutes he does a lot better, but we will follow your advice to the letter for the next week and see what happens. Thank you for another great video! (I would still LOVE to see a video of how you use the head halter protocol during a major distraction.)

@@RaptorsGirl We've had a breakthrough!! We worked indoors for weeks, we had to back up a few steps to target training, clicker training, and pivots and spins before we could move forward, and everything took much longer than we'd expected, but we both hung in there. He HATES his head halter which was all I was using for about a month before we started this new tact. I haven't used it except one time since and I realized he's just too miserable with it, despite extensive positive conditioning. We kept walking in the yard with a flat collar and turned around at the driveway when pulling started there. We finally were able to venture out into the dirt road the other day, and today he walked beautifully on the road with his front-clip harness. I integrated "Watch!", click and feed about a week ago since he's so reactive (excessive greeting disorder) when he sees other dogs. I think that is helping. I’m a dog walker, not a trainer. Is there anything I can do to curb the pulling of some of my dogs?
Any tips for people in condos? I live on the 18th floor and I need to put him on a leash 4-6 times a day.
I haven't had a puppy in 12 years so feel very rusty. (old guy passed away last year) If I bring home a 8-9 week old puppy can I start this? I hate to keep them home for 7 days though when I should take them out to see and experience things. Also having a breed that I train to pull when hiking or sledding I am thinking train the heel then add the harness and teach pull with that? I for once in my life want a perfect heeling Siberian.
How would you premak this? I have tried teaching pivots with my pyrenees/border collie mix, months of trying and he still has no idea of what is going on. The only method he actually seems to learn from is premak.
You could also use a long line until your dog is good on a leash :) (I have ones that go up to 75 feet)
ya, no....not too doable but long leash is good for safety. My dog would pull to the end of forever, no matter how long or short the leash. Had to break that quick! We started with gentle leader head halters just so she wouldnt choke herself out. I never had a dog like this before, so it was initially a huge challenge. Now we can use a flat collar and can be in a class with 25 dogs walking in perfect heel on leash in a line. NIGHT and DAY doing the inside training Susan describes here. The dog needed to learn there was a better more acceptable way to walk.

@@DogsThat sometimes i use a 5 meter (16 feet) leash to give the dog more freedom when i cant walk him off leash. It would than be another criteria than walking next to me like on a short leash.
@@thats4anita yup. I do that to work on recall. I probably will never risk off leash due to certain environmental hazards, so this is the next best thing to a free run. Poison Ivy is everywhere here so I cant be too careful.
Thank you for this podcast. Once I get to the place where I can take the whole walk with the dog on a loose leash - what about sniffing, reading pee-mail, and pottying? I live in an appartment so I do not have anywhere that my dog can potty without putting her onbeing on a leash.
For sure let your dog read the pee mail! Dogs love to sniff and it is a great stress reliever. I just stop at different intervals and let them sniff for a while.

Is there an episode on puppy loose leash training? Or do you just expect them to look up at you or something vs touch the seam? My 12 week Aussie is loving perch work, haven’t been able to get her to pivot yet but she’s doing great 😊 I don’t have a fenced yard so I have to use a long lead for potty breaks and fetch sessions.

What percentage of a normal casual walk do you personally expect your trained dog to be in reinforcement zone when walking on leash?
Really good but what about loose lead walking when you want to allow your dog to pause and sniff. So not by your side but not pulling?
For sure Karla, in no way am I suggesting we not allow our dogs to stop and sniff, that is an important part of their walk. This video is simply detailing how to go about the rest of your walk together.

I didn't get how to finish the behavior. You teach them to walk beside you but what happens when your dog prefers the enviroment over steak? Thats where a halter comes in?

My dog walks (heels) very well in the yard, but as soon as we get her out for a walk, she pulls. We have her on a front clip harness, which really helped, but she still tries to pull.
Work the strategy I mention in the video for one week...then gradually add more distractions in your yard before taking her back out for your normal walk. I think you will notice a big difference!
