A good amount of scripture is full of metaphors, like we all know Matthew 17:20:
_He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”_
What Jesus meant is not about literally moving mountains, but that if you have strong faith in Him, you can overcome any obstacle. And for Luke 14:26, Jesus actually didn't mean people should hate (the verse itself actually is mistranslated, it was written in Koine Greek, where _miseo,_ meaning "hate" in classical Greek actually means "prefer less" in Koine Greek) their parents, families, and their own life, etc. What He really meant was that it is costly to become one of His disciples and one must consider Him to be more worthy than all other relationships and endeavors in this life.
