  • Which should you buy? The W204 Mercedes C63 AMG? Or the F20/F21 BMW M140i? I have had the pleasure of having access to both of these cars for the past 3 years, so I thought I would do a comparison video to see how much they differentiate.

Thanks for the video. I reluctantly sold my BMW M235i and jumped into a 2013 C63 due to your remarks about it being more of an occasion. The problem is noise. If I do get back into an M Lite, I'll be fitting a sports cat. The noise, drama and wow factor in the C63 is way above the BMW. For me the BMW is better at being chucked around on a B road blast. But my C63 has an LSD so it isn't too far behind. Both good cars in their own way. I now understand your stupid private laugh. 15:59 I do it all the time LOL

I've owned a E46 M3 and I currently own a c63 and I can tell you nothing beats BMW steering handling, but nothing beats the c63 power and sound, unless your driving a super car. None the less the gas consumption on c63 is terrible. I'm happy to own the c63, it puts a smile on my face.

I couldn’t agree with you more! Nothing comes close to the C63’s noise factor in its price bracket, maybe a Maserati Quattroporte? What MPG do you average your C63? I don’t think it’s too bad, I’ve done 32MPG in my C63 before 😆 In my 4 years of ownership, I still get the same giddy smile driving mine too : )

The M140i is a very capable great car but it's not nearly as emotionally rewarding as the C63. To be fair, the Mercedes cost about twice as much new. The Bimmer is a great daily with a sublime inline 6 mated to either a fun manual or a fantastic auto gearbox, it has less maintenance costs and more modern infotainment. But if you crave for the most sensational engine that ever left a German factory look no further than the W204 C63. I have access to both and both are great automobiles in their own right and they fulfill such different roles that it's difficult to even compare them.

I don’t drive mine hard enough to warrant having one so it’s not a deal breaker for everyone, but I understand your point. The silver lining is that the C63’s are such good value for money, that installing one won’t break the bank.

Great comparison! I tried an M140i before I bought my C63 and standard it really left me underwhelmed. I was going to buy an M4 but thought I would give a C63 a go and it had me the moment I started it! I was giggling like a child the whole test drive, they are so much fun.
The running costs cannot be ignored though. I only drive at weekends as I WFH and I still spend around £500pm on fuel, I tend to do a few long trips and almost always drive in sport plus. Usually average around 16-19mpg. Aside from fuel a lot of things are relatively cheap on a C63 but other items are seriously expensive. Servicing is very reasonable with a specialist £300 for an A service and about £450-500 for a B service. I replaced all the spark plugs and injectors for under £300 DIY. I did have to replace the lower front AMG control arms and they are an AMG-only part that cost £460 each, which is pretty eyewatering when comparable M3 arms can be had on the aftermarket for well under £100 each. VED is now £695 a year and will very likely hit over £750 in 2024. Over the last year and 6k miles, mine has cost me about £5.5k.
Very hard to know what to replace it with, the sound is just on another level to almost any other car and I personally love the gearbox (MCT) shift noises and responsiveness.
Mine is the standard 456bhp model and I have been debating a remap to uncork the engine. Did you get it remapped in your ownership? If so who did you use? Was it a noticeable improvement?

    • @NathanMannin
      @NathanMannin  Рік тому +2

Thank you very much Nomad! Standard for standard the C63 is just another level of drama, experience and outright laughter! It’s just a perfect all rounder really!
Fuel wise it’s not amazing but all dependant on your journeys and driving style I suppose, I got nearly 30mpg the other day on a long drive, but I have averaged around 19mpg since owning it.
What made you want to replace the lower control arms? Were there signs they were going bad?
The road tax is definitely a bitter pill to swallow, but it’s so worth it for the displacement you have at your disposal in my opinion. That’s quite a lot of money you’ve had to fork out, I might try and do a video of all my costs over my 3 years of ownership 😆
Like for like in terms of value for money and the experience you get, it’s hard to find something that can do what the C63 can, that’s why I never replaced it! Simply being, I don’t think anything that can!
My C63 did get mapped shortly into my ownership, mine is a PPP so I had slightly more power (487bhp instead of 457bhp) to begin with. Having said that, I still noticed the extra power/torque and more of a rush/pull at the top end, as well as gearshifts are slightly faster and slightly faster responsiveness. It’s meant to have around 510/525bhp from factory anyway as it’s the same lump that was put in E, S, ML, CL, R 63’s. They just pegged back the power on the C63’s to make the other models more appealing. So you’re essentially mapping it to it’s correct state anyway, so I would do it in a heartbeat with it only being a simple cheap ECU tune, I used MSL.

An impressive bit of kit to own at such a young age, I used multicar insurance at the time of buying my C63 which made it super cheap! In terms of V8 ownership for M240i money, there isn’t much out there which inherits the theatric experience the C63’s M156 engine brings! They’re really cheap at the moment too, so I would highly recommend looking into it : )

Not sure I really get this video, as a comparison.
They are completely different cars, and nobody would choose between these two ?
The C63 is a coupe with a 6.2 litre V8 engine ffsk. The launch car in 2008 had 457bhp, and although they can be bought for under 15 grand with high mileage, there is no way you would get a late model 2015 for the same money and mileage as an early model M140i, which wasn't even on sale before the Mercedes had ended production !
So you would be getting a much newer M140i with probably a LOT less miles on it, for the same money.
My M140i was 20 grand exactly, 4 years ago, with 14,200 miles on the clock. I spent 3 grand tuning it, and it destroys C63's (with only 455bhp/634nm - maybe because it weighs a lot less), has half decent rear seats, and when those are folded down, a 1200 litre capacity for amazing practicality. You say the auto box has a 'delay' well, the XHP3 software makes the ZF change like a DCT, much faster, it's superb.
The typical buyer of a C63 would not be bothered about boot space, rear seats, and specifically wants a V8 surely ?
The bills for the C63 are HUGE compared to the M140i, not just fuel (my car will regularly do 42mpg on a run), but servicing and parts are 3 times the price. The M140i is actually cheap to service, and buy parts for, and the road tax is cheap too.
I'm not trying to be deliberately critical, I just think they are such different cars, no buyer would choose between them.
The M140i buyer would probably be looking at an S3, A35, Civic type R, Focus ST, etc as a rival.

    • @NathanMannin
      @NathanMannin  Рік тому +3

I’m not really sure why you’ve made this comment, most of the things you’ve mentioned are in this video and I explain from the get go why I’m comparing them.
You say no buyer would choose between them, as I mentioned in the video, I am in M140i and C63 groups and it’s a fairly common question being asked should I make the switch? How do they compare? Some people may deem the C63 as an upgrade and would like to know what they’re getting themselves into.
I would say they are comparable as I stated at the start of the video. Big engine, RWD, both come as a 3/5 door, 0-60 very similar and both can be had for similar money dependant on certain factors. These two particular cars were roughly bought at the same time with the same mileage, and there was around a £2000 difference at the time. Baring in mind my C63 is a performance package which warrants a premium over a regular C63, so a normal one would’ve been near enough the same value. Even in todays market there isn’t much difference. I don’t understand why you think both cars have to be the same age to make a comparison.
Like I said once again in my video, I clearly stated how cheap M140’s are to modify and how much quicker they’d be compared to a C63. But it’s all relative because you could supercharge a C63 to counter that, albeit it’s a lot more expensive. I was comparing them both stock for stock, in which a C63 would be somewhat quicker. I am very aware of the practicality of the M140i as I’ve been running it for the past 3 years and have owned several 1 series beforehand.
The typical buyer of a C63 wouldn’t be bothered about rear seats and bootspace? Why not? It’s based on a family saloon and comes as an estate in which you bring your family and dog to on holiday? In fact, there are many C63’s which are used practically. You also get 1500 litre capacity boot space in a C63 estate with the seats folded down.
I know the bills are somewhat larger in a C63, because I mentioned it in the video once again… Servicing is 3 times the price? That’s a bit inflated don’t you think? My last service was around £400, are you telling me it costs £133 to service an M140i? The brakes are most certainly not cheap on the M140i either. Fuel economy wise the M140i is brilliant and can get 45mpg on a long run, but despite the C63 have a gargantuan 6.2 N/A V8 I can still get 32mpg on a long run too. Thanks for adding the tax was cheap, it’s not like I didn’t mention that inn the video either…
An M140i buyer could also be looking at ANYTHING that isn’t a rival, as it’s natural to progress and to upgrade, hence why I’ve stated before it’s a common comparison made in their respective Facebook groups. They want or know the pros and cons, how they’re like to drive, how much they cost to run, how practical they are, so on and so forth. In fact, if you check the comments section someone has already commented “finally someone made this comparison” as they’re looking for a new car. I can see you’re fond of the M140i by the way you’ve spoken about it and how your picture is of one. But you have to look at this comparison at a neutral perspective as if you’re in the market for something RWD, fast, comfortable, practical, near enough same value. They may want the M140i because of cheaper tax and less fuel consumption, or they may be swayed towards the C63 due to it being more characterful and wanting to drive something that’s more of an event. Every buyer is different and wants different things from cars, but without owning either of them, how is a buyer going to gauge on which one they should buy? That’s why I made this video, and also because I’ve had the pleasure of owning both back to back for 3 years and wanted to share my piece.
The M140i is undoubtedly the smart option and is great in many areas. But if you want something that puts a genuine smile on your face which leaves you wrinkles, makes your legs like jelly when you step out and makes you get out of bed early for a spirited drive, then the C63 is the obvious car to go for.

@@NathanMannin Thank you for the reply, I appreciate it.
I still don't think they are rivals that anyone would choose between. You did, but they are completely different cars and you still have not addressed that fact.
You might as well have said I'm choosing between a Transit van and a Lotus Elise, because they both have four wheels, and are similarly priced.
Two of my friends had C63's. I have an M140i. There is no way I could afford to run a C63, the bills they had were 3 times what I paid to run mine. They are completely different.
As for legs like jelly, well after a downpipe and tune, it was my M140i which was much faster than the C63, and made the merc seem like all mouth and no trousers, just a big heavy, loud, GT car with a horrible cheap chinzy interior.
I wanted a car which was fun. The M140i is a very lively car which moves around when you drive it above 8/10ths and that is fun.
I saw the C63 as a downgrade after driving one.

@@DjNikGnashers I never said they were rivals. You can think people don’t choose between them, but like I’ve said a few times already, they are often chosen between each other from their respective groups, and already have comments on this video backing that up.
Completely different cars, a lotus to a transit van? You’re just being pedantic and petty now, because you seem to be very pro M140i. Lotus to a transit assuming you’re relating the M140i being the lotus is laughable, because the M140i handles awfully and is very skittish to drive, and before you mention you can modify them to handle better, I’m talking about stock vs stock out of the box. The C63 is absolutely no angel in terms of handling, but it definitely was the most confidence inspiring and planted out of the two. I have addressed it and are not completely different in many areas as I’ve mentioned.
I fail to see where the bills amount to 3 times the amount of an M140i. The tax is obviously the main big hitter, servicing isn’t that much more than the M140i when you take it to an independent, parts can be sourced from Autodoc which reasonably priced, fuel consumption is relative depending how you drive, but I would say 20mpg over 15,000 in a C63 compared to 33mpg in the M140i is not 3 times worse, it’s not even close to that. Of course you’ll be paying a premium for running costs on the C63, but nowhere near the amount you’re inflating it to be.
We’re talking about a modified M140i vs a stock C63 essentially so yes of course it’s going to be quicker, put a supercharger in the C63 and then have the same conversation again, it’s all relative. This review is about comparing them both out of the box, as most people buy their cars in their stock form and decide whether they modify later down the line of their ownership.
I too wanted a car which was fun, charismatic, pure theatre, iconic, gets attention, makes you get out of bed early to make unnecessary trips, a cold start to die for, a crescendo when you hit the redline, can be enjoyed at all speeds, and most of all won’t leave you feeling somewhat numb when getting out of the car, which I never got from the M140i. That is exactly why I’d choose the C63.
Everyone will have their own opinions on the two cars, but after owning both back to back for 3 years they are my thoughts and I’m not the only one who shares the same views as I do.

@@NathanMannin Thank you for the essay, I have read it 4 times and digesting your points.
I am not pro an M140i, it's a fantastic little hatchback, which does have some chassis limitations when stock yes absolutely correct.
To say it handles awfully is the very essence pedantic and petty. It's not as good as any of the M cars, but it certainly isn't 'awful' in the slightest, I think you have been watching too many hater channels to form an opinion. It's a great handling little car, but the damping isn't great and it really needed a LSD from standard. But if they had done that, it would have been far too close to an M car, so they had to make a clear gap, I get that, and that is completely ok it's how car companies work (and I have worked in the motor trade for many years).
Servicing a C63 costs a lot more, and this has been proven by myself comparing my servicing, to my work colleague with a C63 showing me her bills for servicing, so it's a proven fact I'm afraid. She actually sold it and bought a new Supra instead, which (her opinion) is a much better car in every way and cheaper to run too.
Your opinion is just that, your opinion, and that's great absolutely fine.
My opinion is different, and just as valid as yours.
The M140i is a 'better' car if better means more practical, cheaper to run, better fuel economy, faster with only a basic amount of tuning (and you would expect a massive V8 to be much faster than a small straight 6).
Her C63 was the same year 2017 as my M140i, and cost a LOT more to buy. If I had spent the difference between the two, tuning and improving my car, it would be better in every way than the C63.
You like the sound of a massive V8, fair play, I don't and prefer the B58 with a few small mods to increase the volume a little.

Exactly that, but the Harman/Kardon in the C63 is rather poor so it’s not worth it anyway, who needs it when you have that V8 soundtrack anyway 😉

Great Video mate , Im averaging 23.6 in the 8500 miles I have owned my C63 - although I do a lot of longer journeys
I also I have just got the dreaded Cam adjuster rattle too - but still I enjoy every mile I do in it

Thank you so much! That’s a rather generous figure for fuel consumption even though you do more longer journeys! Be sure to check that out before it transpires into something worse!
