Did anyone else think they were listening to the great Carl Sagan for a second, and even upon further inspection seeing the man think they were also looking at Carl Sagan?
To date in this art class at FIU, Roy Lichtenstein is one of my favorite and love artist. He paints like I draw, the major exception is that he is gets paid millions for his work. I appreciate his style as well as his dedication to his work and his humble character.
Hello and thanks for watching. A lot of that archive footage came from films made by 2 different companies (both listed in the credits -- Michael Blackwood and Checkerboard Film Foundation). You can buy their DVDs of the original films on their websites or in the Tate shop.
Thank you Tate for putting this up and thanks to original film-makers for allowing their work to be put up too. What a great artist he was - he has influenced so many of us!
One of Roys relatives was a teacher of mine back in the 80s and needless to say when i found that out I aced the class hoping for one day to get an introduction, it never happened though
Lichenstein, Warhol and the Pop Art movement has been of my greatest inspirations ever since I heard about them. It was my introduction to the art world, when I was totally uninterested in visual arts and I still love it.
Does anyone know where I can find the stencils that Roy Lichetstein used? At 2:08 and 2:10 you can see what looks like adhesive stencil paper with the dots. Did he create these stencils himself or is there somewhere you can buy that type of stencil?
I love his work. Along with Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt, Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Georgia O'Keeffe, Margaret Keane, Norman Rockwell and Tamara De Lempicka.. I guess all the purists would say he couldn't paint like Leonardo Di Vinci, but his art has personality and pop to it. I specifically love his comic art. With the crying ladies and couples and the word bubbles.. They would have been cooler if he came up with original characters and sayings though.. But in the end its what I like as art and what you like too..
vybeschoo My point is that you have no understanding of art or art history. You probably don’t even know how much Lichtenstein altered the images he used. I wonder if you go up to every tattoo artist and tell them they are mostly just plagiarizers? Or if you would tell the inkers at a comic book they are just tracers? Why am I even wasting my time talking to a dunce like you?
As much as Warhol gets the lion's share of attention re. the Pop Art movement and the principal artists actively shaping the scene and its aesthetics and philosophy, I have to say that I preferred Lichtenstein's art over Warhol's. Thanks for making this video on my personal favorite of the Pop artists!
My gosh how pretentious can you get. They literally say that comics aren't art and that what he does is in comparison. The fine art world is so unfortunate.
www.flickr.com/people/deconstructing-roy-lichtenstein/ The actual creators of the art that "inspired" Lichtenstein. They earned peanuts, while this man was loved by art critics and academia - which stanchly opposes plagiarism.
@@artteachernc9119 He was from the Neo-Dada movement. The Dada movement was known for their "ready-made" sculptures like Duchamp's Fountain. They were all a bunch of hacks who enjoyed plagiarism. There is nothing transforming about their art. While the actual artists earned peanuts because comic books weren't considered art, he earned millions by very much copying - WITH A PROJECTOR - their work and pulling them out of context, not giving credit to anything. You can be inspired by other art. You can even use it as a base reference. But transform it. Make it something different. Roy would be one of those photomanipulators that just throws a few filters on photoshop atop of something and calls it art.
Plagiarizer literally all of his work is just cropping and taking away the impact of images done by actual artists. I have no clue how he got away with the massive amount of copyright infringement. www.flickr.com/photos/deconstructing-roy-lichtenstein/
He used a projector to project people’s comic art on to a canvas and traced around the lines, notice how when he paints the pencil lines are already there? Even the words are traced, anyone can trace and fill in the spaces with flat colour paint, did you see his freehand work before he did pop art it was awful, fair enough I will give him credit for a unique technique but if you can’t trace around your own creative work and have to do it to other people’s works then you are an amateur at best, he didn’t even credit the people who’s art he traced around.

He seems like a really modest and humble guy who loved doing what he did.

do you still love it??
Should look into Jack Kirby and Russ Heath, and then think about how original this 'artist' actually is, the fucking thief
Comics are certainly art.
Mine and everybody's favorite in Art school and a tremendous influence for generations to come. Great film!
Keep up the good work, each one of these videos is moving and inspiring.

I'm pretty sure he made those
So excited to see this exhibition!
this is a great angle Tate, I'd love to see more of this style of videos.
Thank you, Tate. Quite wonderful, especially his wife's insights, also watching the-One work. Masterful, exquisite: many thanks.
Totally agree!
I love pop art, Litchenstein and warhol were the best! And I loved the 60s as well!
more of these please denise!
you have to see the exhibition actually in Paris. So exciting work

How to make stencils like that? I really need to know
A great studio
very well made
Anyone know where one could obtain/watch the original documentary/archival footage in full? Thank you
yes
I want to have a studio too
Hello. I am a solo pianist. How can I take the process and thought Mr. Lichtenstein portrayed and transform it into a piece of music?
Steal from more talented but lesser known pianists but perform for snobby-ier audiences
Cool!
Nice video
Great job
One heck of a great artist!!!!!
He copied comic art made by actual talented fellas
Painting is focus.
here from school
You have my respect sir!
i hve the WHAAM paiting tattoed on my right arm freakin awesome
the "all american men of war" comic you mean. Its frame from a comic book by another artist.
vybeschoo What’s your point? It sounds like you don’t understand what Lichtenstein was doing.
@@adamcochran7950 What's your point? It sounds like you have chosen to believe the bullshit Lichtenstein used to justify plagiarism.
@@adamcochran7950 And my point is that the guy i'm replying to doesn't have a Lichtenstein piece tattooed on him, it is someone elses.

@THE NEW HOUSE That is an ignorant and uneducated opinion. Not worth my time bruh. good luck peddling scribbles to snobs.
Claude Monet Gustav Klimt, James Audubon , mc Escher , jw Turner, da Vinci are obviously very different
Great Artist!

The ultimate art thief
Modern master, in he will be the Rembrandt to people 400 years from now
Did he pay the comic artist for copying the comics!
Nope, he didn't even credit them.
super art
tof tof tof
anyone in 2020 watching this video?
Roy biggest artistic masterpiece was his ability to steal arts from comic book artists and make money out of them
People here in COVID 19 👇🏻
¡ Usaba diurex ! 😒😒😒
It's troubling to me that he appropriated other's work into his own...
Very few artists have not done so.

This is not an artist. This is a thief and a hack, who made millions by poorly redrawing others work big
Interesting that there's nobody bitching in the comments saying stupid bullshit like "why is this art?", "a child could do that" 🙄
And the cartoonists whose work he plagiarised , I wonder how they feel ? WHAM!
it's called art appropriation not plagiarism.
Philip Lindsay Art is 90% stealing. I once heard
@@czbaterka some call it remix culture.. take someone else's work and remixing it to your own style..

Art tracers aren't commendable

Sadly, Pop Art is Con Art (Con Artist), spoken from an born artist.
only Ohio artist🤨🤨🤨
20th century art is shit.
