    NYC dumped subway cars into the ocean and this happened: 1. Homeless people sleeping in the ocean. 2. More fish performing in subway cars for donations.3. Crime is up. 4. Subway reefs are never on time. 5. No fish understands the MTA Train engineer on the load speaker. Reef platform is very dirty. 6. The last subway car is empty and stinks. 7. Fish at the subway reef stopped paying the fare. 8. Air conditioning is broken. 9. More fish are being pushed into the tracks at night. 10. MTA announced a fare increase before year’s end.

      Iron and steel are not "heavy" metals, they are non toxic and mostly inert. They will rust but it won't pollute the water as such. Heavy metals refers to things like cadmium, lead, uranium, mercury etc. The poisonous ones!

    • @greatonepro
      @greatonepro 24 дні тому

      Older subway cars that were dumped were made of carbon steel. The metal doesn't hold up well over time and the panel joints began to rust and became brittle. So they had no real scrap value. Dumping them and donating them became the best option. They went through asbestos abatement before being released. Subway cars currently are made of stainless steel and they have better scrap value so they are sold off at the end of life.

      @@SegoMan Okay, here is a couple of things to think about.
      1. You are confined to the space you have. So all the appliances, all the furniture, all the standard sized materials you are bringing into the car have to be custom made or will need work-arounds.
      2. The car is metal. Which means that winter proofing is a BIG issue. This is going to eat into your inside space. I'm assuming you do not want to insulate from the outside bc then you might as well make a structure from scratch.
      3. You will need skilled metal workers and welders. Those ppl are expensive.
      4. Just making sure the thing you end up with is according to code will be a nightmare.
      That is just of the top of my head. No chance a conversion like this will be more cost effective than building a conventional house. Just not gonna happen. Talk to some guys that tried to build homes out of shipping containers. It's a waste of time and resources.

    1. where to put them: land is expensive in areas where there are services for homeless people and middle of nowhere has no resources to take care of them
    2. utilities: There is no way to add plumbing, kitchen equipment or sufficient heating/cooling to these.
    3. behavior: Let's face it, there is a strong correlation between homeless and crime/drugs/mental illness. Most homeless colonies aren't safe to live in.

    Only issue in New York for using them as housing, is "where"? Not exactly a lot of open places to put a couple of thousand of those.

    Its much easier and cheaper to just build a tiny house that can be insulated plumbed electrified than convert a rail car, and the big problem with homeless housing is Where to put it. You want to build a giant slum in your neighborhood?
    You could rennovate an existing slum , and have roads ,sewers etc already in place.
    "Lets stick all these bums in boxes" fixes nothing.

    They dumped all that garbage in the ocean and make it look like it's good for the environment, making artificial reefs. They should of recycled all that metal but I guess it was to expensive. They just dumped all that garbage in the ocean. The idea you said about making homes with the old trains it's a good idea.

    There's so much stuff we can use for housing, that's not the issue. Just think shipping containers etc. The problem is where to put all these housing projects. Most land is owned by either private owners or the state and I've yet to see someone invite a bunch of strangers in subway cars to come live on their property. Also, we as humans have destroyed so much of the worlds ecosystem, it's about time we at least try to give something back lol.
