You will ride eternal - shiny and chrome. Nux's face, the acting, perfectly captures his devotion to the whole War Boys cult. One of my favorite moments of the movie.
He sells that moment so perfectly. You can see this almost beatific relief on his face when Joe tells him that he IS awaited and that he will take him to Valhalla himself. It's incredible
the part where joe flips his truck trying not to run over angharid is such good characterization. making a villain whose ultimate goal is "healthy babies" made for such a surprising moment.
And when he’s warning her about the rock, he saves her, even if only briefly. He’s a monster but when you make the villain switch sides or show concern for a moment like that it really stands out.
Imagine the soul crushing depression when you're getting a mission from your God, only to fail right in front of him. Nux's character arc through the movie was so amazing!
You get a mission from God, you eat shit in front of him and he calls you a loser, and then you're pretty sure you see him die in a car crash. Its the most difficult five minutes of Nux's life.
True, he went from a toady comic relief to the hero who sacrificed himself for the sake of everyone's survival. He only got a glorious death once he defied Immortan and his army - that's what he was being spared for.
One of the innumerable things I love about this movie is how much personality even the nameless, essentially faceless random henchmen have. That one shotgun-carrying War Boy who tells Rictus to go easy on the flamethrower because he'll damage the boss's property, and then throws himself in front of Furiosa's bullets to save Immortan Joe. No name, six words of dialogue, and 10 seconds of screentime, but we know that he's clearly respected to ride enough on the Boss's car - and tell his musclebound ogre son to cool it- and devoted enough to lay his life down for his leader. That's almost an entire character arc. This movie is a masterpiece.
This movie is the epitome of "Show, don't tell." Honestly I think the weakest scenes in the whole movie was when Furiosa and Max were in the war rig discussing their goals.
Rictus was/is nathan Jones a former wwe wrestler back in the 90's. But had a pretty good career in movies. He was in Troy, guy pitt killed in the beginning
I love when Max gets his hand caught behind the wheel- his expression conveys just how painful it is, but he's totally silent, fitting in with how little he talks.
2:43 if you watch closely you can actually see that the guy on the left side of the monster truck falls off and goes under the wheels. I think they filmed that stunt with dummies but it's still cool that the guy on the left is then missing in the subsequent scenes. It's that kind of attention to detail that makes this movie special
I know this was a year ago but that's the body of the dude that got shot by furiosa if you see closely when nux is talking to Joe he is still hanging there in this scene he just falls of after his caught arm loses it's grip
A lot of the shots are cut down from longer ones when making action films. There might have been more focus on his body falling off in an earlier edit, here there's just a quick glimpse left
Can we stop and give the guy playing Nux some major props. Look at him while Immortan tells him he's awaited in Valhala. He's on the verges of happy tears.
If you want to define a protagonist by character change, he's definitely the one. Furiosa and Max change by degrees, if at all. Nux is a full turncoat.
His name is Nicholas Hoult. He's also Beast in the Xmen movies, and many other things. He's having a pretty good career so far (seems like), I hope he continues to get bigger and more sought after. He's been really good in everything I've seen him in.
That was the supreme moment of his life. The man who was his Father, his King, and his God had armed him, blessed him, and promised him glory everlasting. How could he not weep for joy?
After watching so many other movies and games that include ruthless raiders who just kill each other over the smallest things, It's really refreshing that Immortan Joe actually listens to Nux's idea and (sorta) let's him follow through with it. In fact, he even hands him a gun and sprays him in the face with chrome to show he approved of his decision. Other raider leaders would likely put down an underling for speaking out of place, or execute them for thinking they were in charge. Or even kill them after they've failed, which Joe doesn't in response to Nux tripping and dropping the gun. But the fact that Nux could trust that the Boss wouldn't shoot him down shows that these henchmen aren't motivated by fear of execution, but by a genuine desire to follow their leader. It's as heartwarming as bloodthirsty, murderous marauders can get in post-apocalyptic fiction.
I agree, I liked how Joe's manipulation allowed him to rule through respect and true loyalty rather than fear, which ironically makes him feel even more evil than the ones who rule by fear cause he managed to get the war boys to genuinely want to follow him.
Agreed. Something else I love about that part is how Immortan Joe tells Nux to kill Furiosa instead of keeping her alive. I think that might actually help Nux realize he's on the wrong side later on, knowing that Joe would kill Furiosa despite how long she'd been an Imperator for him.

i love that the music that plays as Nux goes for his blaze of glory gets abruptly cut off when he trips and falls. it's the same theme that plays when he does eventually sacrifice himself - but in that one, it is carried to completion. his sacrifice was always inevitable. it just wasn't to be made here, and not for Joe's glory but to defeat him.
For those who said this film lacked story: Splendid being the favorite has Immortan Joe's symbols etched into the side of her face. She's also placed on a higher pedestal than the other wives, which makes her feel inadequate when she can't load the gun. She then uses the one thing she has over Joe to shield Furiosa and bring a temporary stop to this madness, his unborn child. The War boys are constantly hanging on the door that ultimately leads to Splendid's death. The chain that bounded Nux and Max is the very thing that stops Nux from completing his murderous task. This would be pages of dialogue in another director's hands, which makes Miller's visual storytelling even more impressive!
There's also the fact that Nux's obsession with winning Joe's favor inadvertently caused the complete and total collapse of his empire, with his insistence on bringing his "bloodbag" with him, not realizing that he was about to deliver the single most dangerous living thing on earth to his enemy. Had he not brought Max to Furiosa, I doubt she would have been able to even survive her disagreement with the Rock Riders just on her own. The chain that bound him to Max quite literally stopped his ambition in its tracks
He was starting to feel responsible for them and was genuinely impressed with her courage and resourcefulness in helping him and avoiding death. Then as she falls from the truck the camera focuses for a second on her injured leg that Max shot earlier, reminding the audience, he IS responsible, partially or fully (never to be known to what degree), for yet another death of his folks and has to live with the burden of yet another soul.. This film is a gem. 10x better than the new Furiosa film imho.

The film constantly espouses feminist talking points about how its men that destroyed the world and are pretty much the cause of everything that is wrong and bad, which is why the patriarchy is overthrown and replaced with a matriarchy in the end. However, Immortan Joe was a dictator doing what he thought was right for his people in such a harsh climate. Everything he did was for a brighter future and to strengthen his group so they could live another day, with the foresight to create goods for trade, hydroponics systems to grow vegetables on a barren Earth, to create healthy heirs to lead their tribe into the future, really just about everything he is seen doing isn't for instant self-gratification but because he wanted to build, maintain, and protect a society even while he knew he was dying with his health failing as shown by his labored breathing and the cancers that afflict them all due to radiation.

I really love the 2 close up driving shots of Immortan Joe in this chase scene. It really adds to the dynamic and intensity of this chase scene and you feel how desperate the whole situation is. George Miller is a goddamn genius.
I love how at 0:36 the biker drops the dynamite. It reminds me of when in The Road Warrior the guy next to the Warrior Woman lights a bag on fire but then drops it and accidentally sets his hands on fire. Except in that one the guy was a good guy. It really shows how in the Mad Max universe the side you're on doesn't determine your luck at all. I love that.
Same here, he's instantly iconic if I formed a villain team my recruits would be Immortan Joe, Sauron, Clarence Boddicker (Robocop) and Simon Phoenix (Demolition Man)
@@kakroom3407 Hugh Keays-Bryne (RIP) had said in an interview that acquisition of things, especially rare things, is a key part of Immortan Joe's character. Rare vehicles? Pause at 0:33, when they shoot together, he with the pistol and she with the flare gun. Such perfect synchronicity. They both know exactly what they have to do and they do it. One thing I'm curious about is how Immortan Joe feels about the religion he's created around himself. He was around before everything went to shit, so I wonder if he actually is really into the stuff he preaches, or if he's well aware it's all a lie and he just maintains the image to maintain power.
@@Metro_6969 he was in the military, as far as i know. Same as Bullet Farmer , but i cant say who People Eater was for sure. Likely a politician or businessman.
i think it takes massive balls, a massive god complex and piles of luck to center a religion around you being *literally* immortal when you actually aren't, especially in the harsh and brutal wastelands. so, its not entirely out of the picture that immortan actually believes in it. if he uses the religion just to control the populace, did he have any plans for the religion he controlled when he eventually passes away or was he just a very narcissistic man who liked to be in absolute power for no reason in particular and would leave the fallout to the future warlord? the latter seems unlikely for me considering how much he wanted a perfect heir, going so far as to sacrifice two of his allies and a large portion of his military to recapture his wives.
A fully developed world. Years of experience on portray. When was the last time a movie was this well executed?! Every pice of weaponry and defense is plausible and usable.
Fury Road is REALLY helped by how simple the overarching plot is. It gives the movie lots and LOTS of time to develop these things. If the plot involved any sort of intricacy, these details would not have shone through nearly as brightly, I think. It was a good fucking call.
Small thing, but it's a good detail to show the biker's kinda... give up the moment the fuel catches alight. They're not idiots, and they're not part of Joe's suicide cult. If they're not going to get anything from the chase, they don't bother.
He said that he because she has his child. He didn’t actually care about her. She was still alive afterwards but had his medic kill her to get the child out even when it was dead.

Hugh Keays-Byrne will ride eternal, shiny and chrome.
😢😢😭😭😭Yes, he will. See you in Valhalla, Immortan Joe!
Yeah this one sucked a lot... I remember him from allll the way back to Farscape... when I found out he was gonna be in this I knew he would knock it out of the park.

3:58 Daaaaaamn, Rictus's jump here is awesome to say the least !
and he gets up almost immediately!
Rictus might be an idiot, but damn he's much more agile than he seems.
Yes finally someone else who noticed it, thats no mere jump, that's a roll to help slow down his momentum and lessen damage taken, I thought it was nice how they showed the warboys alive have probably been in mutiple car smash ups and learnt from them, especially Rictus, the blokes a behemoth.

I really love the 2 close up driving shots of Immortan Joe in this chase scene. It really adds to the dynamic and intensity of this chase scene and you feel how desperate the whole situation is. George Miller is a goddamn genius.
i know exactly what you mean
I love how at 0:36 the biker drops the dynamite. It reminds me of when in The Road Warrior the guy next to the Warrior Woman lights a bag on fire but then drops it and accidentally sets his hands on fire. Except in that one the guy was a good guy. It really shows how in the Mad Max universe the side you're on doesn't determine your luck at all. I love that.
1:05 love the childlike antics of Rictus with the flamethrower. That’s something I would do.
Immortan Joe is one of my favorite villains. His charismatic speeches gives me chills.
Same here, he's instantly iconic if I formed a villain team my recruits would be Immortan Joe, Sauron, Clarence Boddicker (Robocop) and Simon Phoenix (Demolition Man)
There isn’t a single wasted shot in this entire movie. 100% through.
The War Boys don't know what that word, "mediocre," means, but Immortan Joe most definitely knows what MEDIOCRE means!
1:54 Immortan Joe has great taste in weapons.
Colt SSA king of the old west. Indeed he does have great taste.
2:29 and you can see he immediately loses it too
Don’t care much for the nickel finish myself but excellent taste and very fitting choose of Arsenal for a warlord !

@@kakroom3407 Hugh Keays-Bryne (RIP) had said in an interview that acquisition of things, especially rare things, is a key part of Immortan Joe's character. Rare vehicles? He mashes two Cadillac Coup Devilles together into a supercar. Women? He has not one, but five. Guns? Unsurprising he'd covet acquiring rare guns.
Pause at 0:33, when they shoot together, he with the pistol and she with the flare gun. Such perfect synchronicity. They both know exactly what they have to do and they do it. He shoots the glass and breaks it, allowing her shoot the flare at the biker. She waits a beat to let his shot break the glass before she shoots. They had incredible flow together, never once getting in each other’s way.
exactly. such "synchronicity", reading each other like they are one. Love that moment. They truly are brothers/siblings in arms in this entire sequence.
As a Monster Jam fan, it was awesome seeing a monster truck in action in this film.
1:53 The dramatic music that accompanies this specific scene is absolutely phenomenal.
It’s basically Nux’s theme. Each time it plays he’s about to sacrifice himself. First is during the sandstorm, second time is in this scene and then the third and final time it plays is when Rictus rips the engine out of the war rig and Nux flips it, sacrificing himself.

I get chills every time when Joe stares Nux in the eyes and hypes him up to go after Furiosa!
You will ride eternal, shiny and chrome...that has to be one of the coolest lines ever on a film.
That symphonic music mixed with Nux’s stunned expression at the end gives the moment a touch of reflective poignancy.
"You will ride eternal. Shiny and chrome." must be one of my favorite lines of the movie.
I love every close-up shot of Furiosa's face in this movie. Such an ingenious yet subtle story telling device. Watch the whole movie. There are multiple close-up shots of Furiosa's face (and EYES
1:42 without a doubt my favorite scene in the whole movie.
I like this scene too but my favorite one will always be the sandstorm scene
What a scene.... WHAT A LOVELY SCENE!!!!
This is how you make a "feminist" movie, when the women are just as badass as Max, without being cartoonishly so.
@Satanogoat Rex yea furiosa without an arm and many scars being badass af is totally a mans cum soaked fantasy. you only mention the part with those models and ignore the 2nd main character because you need something to complain about.
Satanogoat Rex If this is trash, the what's good?
I don't see anything feminist about this movie, it's all marketing
@Blackout76 apparently he also missed the crisscrossed slashes all over splendid’s face and she was still joe’s favorite! “zero scars” my ass.

I love how Nux fails in his duty because of the chains they yoked him with. The visual cause and effect storytelling in this film is next level.
Hugh Keays-Byrne, the actor who played Immortan Joe is the same guy who played Toecutter in the first Mad Max movie. And he played the villain William Whopper in Secret Valley, an Australian childrens tv-series that I loved when I was a young kid.
He was great in Farscape as well. One of my fav. science fictions pieces ever... made for American T.V. by pretty much an all Aussie production crew/cast.

I finally saw this in the cinema this past weekend, at the BFI IMAX London, once in colour 3D, and once in 2K Black and Chrome. I can die happy now
That flare gun scene at 0:34 might be the best action scene of the entire film..
After watching the prequel I could see why furiosa started to like and Trust Max because he reminded her of Jack.
2:32 when you finally pass the slow driver you were stuck behind
This is one of the most over-the-top, breathtaking, batshit, ludicrous, insane scenes in the history of cinema…
It’s also one of the beautiful things I’ve ever seen in my life. Just watching this brings a tear to my eye 😢
One thing I'm curious about is how Immortan Joe feels about the religion he's created around himself. He was around before everything went to shit, so I wonder if he actually is really into the stuff he preaches, or if he's well aware it's all a lie and he just maintains the image to maintain power.
maybe he was a cult leader before the apocalypse lol
Well the religion is real. It's Norse paganism but I think immortan joe used it and twisted it around a bit to get the warboys to follow him.
@@Metro_6969 he was in the military, as far as i know. Same as Bullet Farmer , but i cant say who People Eater was for sure. Likely a politician or businessman.
I honestly wonder this too. I like to think he buys into it as well
i think it takes massive balls, a massive god complex and piles of luck to center a religion around you being *literally* immortal when you actually aren't, especially in the harsh and brutal wastelands. so, its not entirely out of the picture that immortan actually believes in it.
if he uses the religion just to control the populace, did he have any plans for the religion he controlled when he eventually passes away or was he just a very narcissistic man who liked to be in absolute power for no reason in particular and would leave the fallout to the future warlord? the latter seems unlikely for me considering how much he wanted a perfect heir, going so far as to sacrifice two of his allies and a large portion of his military to recapture his wives.

Love this movie...
Such a glorious mix of Life and death, Good and Evil, Grotesque and Beautiful
The whole movie is basically "Divorce and child custody battle ends in violence."
I want to see Fury Road in a loud and gigantic IMAX!!
