Steven Wilson makes music from his soul, from the heart and for himself - this is how there is such an amazing diversity to his music, he's not trying to please everybody by making one song sound the same as the last one. I imagine he is one of very few artists these days who is allowed complete artistic control over what he does. So before criticizing or comparing this to his other songs, remember , this is what makes him so great ....

Steven Wilson is the perfect example of 'the classic artist.' He does what he wants for himself to express a deep yearning within himself, and trying only to do what he believes and feels is right. He only wants to produce things that he likes, he is always disassociating himself to what the current industry trends are and he tries to stay true with his true inner feelings. He isn't trying to impress anyone with his musicality or virtuoso. He just wants to be himself, and be accepted for exactly who he is. He wants to feel deeply the feelings that he has within and express them, allow for people to experience the very things he does and to share those feelings with people. And he will continue to play out those feelings to no end with his music because he DOES want to hold on to those feelings because they are HIS and he has a RIGHT to do that as an artist or a human being rather. It's for a very specific group of people. He knows he is imperfect, but he doesn't care because that's just who he is, and it painful for him that conventional society is so shallow, and does not accept him as such, especially as a child probably. He is an outsider, always was one and always wants to be one. He is the essence of a classic poet at heart.

My friend from work died last month while she was on vacation with her family. Not only was she my good friend, but also very close one with another co-worker of mine. Everyday after their shifts, they would hang out and do so many things together. The eerie and beautiful thing about this song is how parallel the story is to theirs in the sense that they were friends for 6 months, 3 years apart, and were pretty much sisters. And for that, I dedicate this to not only my late friend, but to the both of them. For they both really did have the perfect life. Rest in peace, work bestie. I hope you hear this from wherever you are in the afterlife 🙏🕊️😢

When I was 13 I had a sister for 6 months. She arrived one February morning, pale and shellshocked, from past lives I could not imagine. She was 3 years older than me, but in no time we became friends.
We’d listen to her mix tapes; Dead Can Dance, Felt, This Mortal Coil…
She introduced me to her favourite books, gave me clothes, and my first cigarette.
Sometimes we would head down to Blackbirds moor to watch the barges on Grand Union in the twilight.
She said “The water has no memory”.
For a few months everything about our lives was perfect.
It was only us, we were inseparable.
But gradually she passed into another distant part of my memory.
Until I could no longer remember her face, her voice, even her name.
    We have got
We have got a perfect life...

@@jordy48 i think that the fact that we don't get to know anything about how their friendship ended means that it was traumatic to the one speaking. Just judging by what we get, it might have been her friend suiciding or anything like that. This could be a trauma so big and deep that the speaker could just not process it, couldn't even acknowledge it ever evwn happened. That's why she forgot everything about her friend. Because she had to forget.
That might be completely off, but it's what i imagined when i heard the song.

This song about the death of someone you love is beautifully expressed though these images. As Mr. Wilson said in a concert; "I am here to make your life a little bit more disgraceful". Ha, ha, ha! I do not agree with you; I think you and your team are here to present life as it is in a poetic way. Thanks for it!

One day I heard from someone he committed suicide, that day I simply wish....definition of suicide shouldn't be what I know.
He was very active socially, but when he became wallflower no one cares...So yes it's not completely true ...that time heals everything, ....but the intensity of pain subsides with each passing year, when you grow old you'll see the same transformation as I've gone through.

For all who are complaining, you are clearly not getting the point of this album or this track. I read a comment about Hand Cannot Erase (the track) saying it was about a boyfriend from college, via the website/blog. Well if you look at the track listing this comes right after, which probably means she is reminiscing about a relationship with her sister from the past like the boyfriend. Remember she is lonely, and yes this is electronic and some what upbeat, as Hand Cannot Erase is more of pop type of song. HOWEVER, if you are not liking this, then you aren't looking at the project the right way. You are listening and looking for Steven Wilson, which is wrong. He has created this character and this about her. What he is doing is really ground breaking if you let yourself get lost in the idea of the visuals and tangibles of this girl. The music is just an extension of this woman. Stop trying to find SW and try to let yourself indulge in this Epic work of art. This is her story, told be SW, this isn't SW telling his story.. SWIG

I remember listening to this song the first time in 2015. Only a few months into a new job and more responsibilities and a few years removed from college. Had a very close college friend that lived several hours away. We were practically inseperable back in school, but we drifted just due to location differences. When I heard this song, it struck a cord with me. I realized it was more than a year since we last met, and many months since we even spoke, and I didn't want to lose on something special.
Made a point to travel every so often to visit, and invite him over to trips I would go solo. In some ways we've been closer friends than ever before, pulling each other from various ruts and becoming stronger, and I'm glad to have listened to this song when I did to realize the potential regret of not keeping past relationships.

Many people are fortunate enough to have an older role model/best friend, and I did too, and this song is a wonderful reminder of how important that was, as well as a reminder of the fact that it'll never be that way again. Life is still great... but that time will never come again. Such wonderful art.

I caught my wife cheating on me. I found myself in a tailspin. Depression owned me and there was nowhere to hide, no escape. I had to grow.. and I had to grow fast. The song Postcard was a rallying cry. At times, I felt like his voice was my own. I'm a lifer now. Steven has earned a spot in my soul.. forever. Music was and has often been my only "church".. my only therapy. Love yourself first friends. Another album I highly recommend is Tremors by Sohn. Truly gut wrenching and a way to force yourself into submission. Today is YOUR day to overcome.

inner feelings. Lost memories of our adolescence.
Not a ordinary song. Never ordinary songs from steven wilson.
The structure of the song is not really a song... But a remembrance. Small and tender. All of us have a story. A childhood. Maybe bad or full of happines. So. I cant believe that listening to this somebody of you didnt have a little drops on his eyes.

    When I was 13 I had a sister for 6 months.
She arrived one February morning, pale and shellshocked,
from past lives I could not imagine.
She was 3 years older than me,
but in no time we became friends.
    We’d listen to her mix tapes;
Dead Can Dance, Felt, This Mortal Coil…
She introduced me to her favourite books,
gave me clothes, and my first cigarette.
Sometimes we would head down to Blackbirds moor
to watch the barges on Grand Union in the twilight.
She said “The water has no memory.”
For a few months everything about our lives was perfect.
It was only us, we were inseparable.
But gradually, she passed into another distant part of my memory,
until I could no longer remember her face, her voice, even her name.
    We have got
We have got the perfect life...

Oh this song and the video, maybe i'm weird but it remind me of when my beloved dog was still alive just a few weeks ago and this friendship and of all the wonderful walks in the sunlight, under the moonlight, in the snow I had with him, all the lovely places I discovered with him, when the girl disapear and her sister start to cry, I understand the emotion so well... I went to these places I used to go with my dog and I was desperately looking for him despite I knew he was no longer alive but everything stayed so lonely and empty, this absence shattered me, my chest feel empty and this melancholy is choking, I'm just alone with memories now.

The mark of a true artist is revealed here with a dedication to create, fearless exploration of new territory, and finding a new way to say something that has been said before. Wilson has begun to unfold a story here about a significant moment in this girl's life when everything seemed perfect. Lyrically, this song makes me reflect on what it means to have a "perfect life" and to cherish the good of the day, for tomorrow may not be the same. The repetition of the chorus does an excellent job of capturing the feeling of a moment in time. The fond memories of her sister is now a faded picture, but at the time, things were perfect and that's all that mattered. Perhaps this ties into a deeper meaning and richer tapestry behind the theme of this album, but for now, I'm enjoying some introspective thoughts this song has provoked. Well done Wilson. Well done.
