I think it has the worst stabilization that I've seen in a while, especially considering the competition. Even with IS, it looks terrible. Looks like the (almost) perfect camera for indoor bloggers, but could definitely use a touch menu for those instead of forcing bloggers to pick it up, mess with the menus and return it back to its perch.

Max Yuryev thanks for the review it was so useful and detailed. I actually bought it already after seeing a review from Think Media! Still waiting to receive it, I also bought the G7X Mark 2! Do you think I should change the G7X Mark 2 with Mark 3 so I can have better photos and use the new Sony for video? Also what mic can I use for G7X? Your video showed that the Sony have their own mic which I didn’t know about, will have to get that.

I did buy one and LOVE it. While having the 11Pro Max is nice its also very nice to have a standalone camera, especially for a vlogger.

Zv-1 is pretty much the experiment needed for a7s3’s flip screen. 2020 now and 4k/60 should be the standard minimum. Sony also didnt think about adding wider field of view lens for vlogging, which is the main purpose of this device. Who else needs this zv-1 when an iphone11pro does all the job and more ( except for low light). But who vlogs in low light, you’re not casper 😁

Wow! Now this is a genuine UA-cam review. I've been watching the coverage of this camera around Asia and most of the videos out here sound like a sponsored advertorial! Only pros and no cons. This one felt so genuine and sincere. Big ups, Max!

I think when comparing the iPhone 11 Pro Max to the ZV-1 (i own both as well) it's gonna come down to personal preference. For me, I think the 4K on the ZV-1 just has that extra crispness to it and for me unless I'm vlogging in a place like a store or a restaurant I'm gonna go for the ZV-1 everytime. The phone is a lot like a GoPro to me. It's awesome in a setting with a lot of light but if you need to shoot indoors an actual camera gives you a little more room to work with. Just my opinion.

I think push come to shove, I’m just tired of using my phone for EVERYTHING, ALL THE TIME. Lol..
I already use my phone for so many other tasks frequently that takes up space and burns thru battery. For video, I’m at a point where I just need a dedicated device for it. So this one is great! Thank you for the review!

It's always funny to me how we are all supposed to have a last generation iPhone in our pockets. My smartphone is four years old and working just fine. I just got a zv1 for a bit more than 500€ and I'm really loving the quality that comes from this little thing.

    • @neaorin
      @neaorin 2 роки тому +1

the point is you need a smartphone anyway, and if you wanted to vlog and were considering buying the ZV-1, then it could make sense to buy a last gen iPhone instead of a mid-range phone AND the ZV-1. So you have something that's pretty decent for vlogging, is always with you, has better battery life than the ZV-1, and is also a better phone than anything in the $500 range
Now, the ZV-E10 is a different story because you can actually put different lenses on that thing, something you aren't really able to do with an iPhone

I've been debating on which camera to get to upgrade my stream. This review has definitely helped in my decision making. The ease of use, entry level camera, with focus (pun intended) on vloggers and product featuring has definitely helped. In addition, the software update to use as a webcam, so I don't have to buy an ElGato Cam Link, definite is a huge PLUS. Thank you for the great review.

I was quite surprised just how good the ZV1 is! I think you’re right a lot of people go for something like the A6400 but don’t invest in good lenses or mics... so the ZV1 is the better option. Plus the active stabilisation looks pretty good (our A6400 has no IBIS at all!) seriously tempted to get this as a travel camera!

Very interesting Max. I could imagine someone with say a Xs Max or Xs thinking, hey I could hang on to my phone another year and the money I would have spent on a new phone I could spend on this ZV-1, and I could save a few hundred dollars as well. Knowing the ZV-1 will be better than any iPhone camera for at least a couple of more years, that seems like a pretty good idea if someone likes upgrading his or her phone primarily for the camera upgrades. The only problem is having to carry it around with your phone. You know you have to carry your phone most times. The real question I guess is, is the difference in quality worth carrying a second device with you? I think it might be for specific situations but not on a daily basis. Anyway, great review Max! This was really helpful for me.

The combination of the price and all the features and most importantly the 1" stacked sensor and adding small gimbal like the M2 gimbal make a very small light weight rig that I can use. Yes it would be nice to have a wider lens. In the meantime I will use the M2 gimbal with a selfish stick. I did use your link to order it. 😁

Nice detailed review! Not having the 30 minute time limit is a HUUUUGE plus! Also the webcam functionality is useful to mimic Canon's Webcam Utility app. The price tag on the Sony camera is a bit steep given its limitations and relative to the competition, but it looks like a very slick all-in-one camera.

Excellent review!!! I've been testing the ZV-1 all week against my iPhone 11 Max pro (as you just did). I LOVED the iPhone for street food video in Asia as, it didn't draw attention (I try to avoid getting mugged), the focus was better than most pocket cameras and the color, out of the camera, was quite nice, although over saturated. What killed the iPhone for me was: 1) the low light performance was so poor that it destroyed a couple of productions that I was doing and cost me some money 2) It's so easy to fumble a "digital button" by tapping or brushing the screen at the wrong time (e.g. hitting REC while shooting and thinking that I just got 7-8 minutes of great footage while the camera was actually off). As Max, I found that the ZV-1 exceeded my expectations and in MANY ways has significant advantages over the iPhone (plus so many more options). I know I'm going to love this camera so... I'll "gear it up" (does Amazon carry a 12-pack of batteries for this?), lol. and my amazing Nikon D850 will continue to collect dust (sorry big boy... your just too chubby to join me in the jungles of the Philippines and besides, this pipsqueak will beat out your video (when you're not on a tripod).

Yes, I also have an issue with the crop factor that kicks in with digital stabilization and I agree that 16-20mm is ideal for vlogging. I also bought this camera recently and will be comparing it to Idolcam (which has interchangeable lenses), which I still think is the best functional vlogging camera available. The ZV-1 has some cool features like the background defocus and product showcase, and although the best digital stabilization like on the GoPro Hero 8 or the Osmo Action are impressive, nothing beats a gimbal, at least not yet.

You just made my day. I was lucky enough to win the Sony ZV-1 in a photo competition. I wasn't really sure if this camera would be for me as I have my Canon 6D, GoPro 8, Mavic Air 2, and my iPhone XR. I was thinking I don't really travel with the 6D as I find it too bulky and so I just shoot with the iPhone... BUT your video has changed my mind on the ZV-1. If I can get bokeh shots like that (Which look as good as the 6D) and also get decent shots in low light, then I just cant wait to add this mighty little camera to my kit when travelling.

Here’s something most don’t touch on, by buying a compact Sony over a phone, you get the same color science and closer dynamic range/highlight roll off of their better cameras. When shooting on a Sony for my Instagram, I’d be able to use the same presets from my A7iii if I bought the Zv1 or rx100 mk7 with minimal to no tweaks

One of the best reviews, especially comparison with iPhone 11 really helps. I have been using Sony a6600 with 16-55 f/2.8 since last year. Even I use that camera combo for taking photos, videos, use it as a webcam as well.
This little camera looks very promising, but still, I think if you have iPhone 11 Pro, you better to use APS-C or full-frame when you're serious. For beginner content creator iPhone 11 Pro is okay.
But some features of this camera I really like. ND filter, product showcase, fully articulated screen, and Sony's new color science. I wish Sony update a6600's firmware to include at least the new color processing support so that we need to process less on a6600 footage or picture.

Great review (as always). Based on some of your final comments, it looks like you would recommend in many cases the ZV-1 over a 6400 because most beginners never purchase lenses or use more advanced features. But does the ZV-1 have enough room for growth as an intermediate vlogger/content creator? Or should one get a 6400 if they feel they're going to take content creation more seriously?

Thankfully, there is a mode that remedies it for the most part. Also...wow, Sony...a fully-articulated screen after all these years! Hopefully, it comes to the mirrorless line as well.

iPhone 11 or the ZV for blogging? Excellent video, good channel. Barry Spain

Great video showing the pros and cons of the ZV-1. If you’re just starting out in Vlogging and videos, I think the iPhone SE, at $399, is a better value for the money. It also gives you the advantage of being able to shoot, edit and post your video using one device that you always have with you.

Although, iPhones and any other modern smartphones are great, I prefer to have a dedicated camera for vlogging. 1st, calls and messages can disrupt the video. 2nd, it won't be very good for the battery.

My favorite Sony vlogging setup still is the A6400/6600 plus the Zeiss Touit 12mm 2.8 lens. More expensive, sure, but a camera with exchangeable lenses. Only downside is the more extreme rolling shutter if compared to the ZV-1...

    • @Jennifer-wr9si

      but a6400 doesn't have IS...or does it?

  • @UrbanGardenbyRithy

Yes, I do agree that people would take this out with them more often than the bigger one. As a result, more footages more content. I'm the one who sold my a6400 and now pre-ordered ZV1. I think phone camera is advancing and good to point that we could use it, yet the exception only apply to higher end models like Samsung flagships and iPhones. Thus, they're over $1K that make this compact ZV1 better.

Having watched numerous reviews, I have to say yours is probably the best. It is also great that you are comparing it to a phone which I believe is the competition for this camera as opposed to a DSLR or Mirrorless interchangeable camera. I really do not understand why compare a compact camera to DSLR or mirrorless. This is more relevant and targeted towards phone and compact camera users and not camera experts. And as you mentioned, towards someone starting out or happy with kit lenses. Thus I think yours is the best along with full detailed example and most just specs that some are spewing out.

Epic Rhino Films I mean if what you are using works fine then no need to change. I shoot on my iPhone which is okay quality. I have vlogged with GoPro and I despise the colours that come out of it and battery life is about 30mins with heavy use which is no good. I prefer the camera look to action cameras or phones so thought about this but not sure. Just wanted a compact camera that fits my pocket but can do good video.

Very nice review. They claim the minimum focus distance is 2 inches. Did you find this to be true during videos? and how quick does it focus? I often during video have to bring up something close to the lens. On a camcorder I can get about 1 inch away and it focuses pretty good. Curious how this compares. Thanks.

Thanks for this. The issue with screen poor screen brightness is a good argument for retaining an EVF..
I would like to know whether there are any overheating issues with the ZV-1, particularly when using it for live streaming (it would have been good to see it 'in action'' in a live stream, too).

I bought this for my work Zoom meetings . It is great for video. USB connect will do video and power the ZV-1 indefinitely or you can go capture card for a little better quality and still power the ZV-1 indefinitely at 1080 60 via USB. Great and easy for a streaming setup. I sold my a5100 and 5 lenses. It felt good to reduce and not have to worry about lenses.

11:45 Battery life is _not_ an issue. Just connect a power bank or other USB power source to run the camera. The only caveat is you must also use a regular battery with at least a partial charge, then use the camera all day with your USB source. (The USB port on a lithium-ion car jump starter makes an excellent long-lasting power source.)

Hey Max. Have you tried looking at the screen with polarised sunglasses? You can’t see the screen, and if you are shooting in a sunny location most of the time, you won’t be able to see how you compose the shot. Saw it in a Jared Polin video, and it’s on my mind ever since. I really wanted to get the camera, but in sunny weather I need to wear polarised sunglasses and it’s a deal breaker for me.

Does the screen glass feel the same as the RX cameras? I'm hoping they say a firmware update will be released that makes the menus touchable like what is expected for the FX9.
