I have a philosophical question for you. Is it justifiable to judge a man even knowing that his desires comes from his humanity? Judging others is to judge humanity?
I absolutely love how this crazy election is going on and you're just making videos analyzing esoteric traditions in 20+ year old video games that most people have never heard of. Never change you beautiful man.
Inexplicably I owned this game but not a memory card; and my smooth child brain could not work out how to... Succeed? Every so often people mention it and I say "never heard of it" and then have a full Ratatouille flashback to the confusing card game I had that I would try out whenever I wasn't playing Gladius. Cheers for the sweet little memory. Wonderful to see that it was, in fact, a thoughtful experience.
I hope that we see a bit more experimentation by fromsoft in the future. Miyazaki has repeatedly said that he wants younger designers to take a shot, while he himself wants to slow down. Fromsoft also said that they are currently producing several titles at the same time. So I hope we see some smaller titles (roughly in the same scope as sekiro or AC6), by fromsofts homegrown junior designers. I assume the next bigger title will be all Miyazaki again.
Surprised you didn't mention how Roderika from Eldenring is a LostKingdoms reference. Was so happy seeing this video btw thank you for getting word out on this fantastic series!
If you want to go even farther back my older brother and I used to play King’s Field back in the day (also FromSoftware) But it was tough as nails and in my heart the original DarkSouls for me (well it was in first person so a different feel but hard nonetheless) Seriously that’s been a game that has stayed with me for decades.
Lost Kingdoms is the game that taught me "Oh man, weird games can be COOL!" Hearing all the things you pointed out really puts the game in a new light... Great video, and thanks!
So glad you covered this mini series by Fromsoft. I grew up on these two games. Later on played Eternal Ring (great music). Years later I was introduced to Bloodborne but couldn't play it so I played Elden Ring. Not long after I got a job and then started with Bloodborne and eventually played all three Dark Souls games in order and now I'm am totally a Fromsoft fan.
Never heard of this so ty for uploading! Something else I’d like to mention is that FROMSOFTWARE has been building towards soulsborne for a long time since before they even started developing games. They were a business software company originally and you can see the influence of that in games like the original Armored Core which had a heavy focus on managing a budget and customizing your build. You can see how that carried over into soulsborne games with people creating different builds while managing their souls/stats.
I have been a FromSoft fan since the late 90's, thanks to the Armored Core series on the PS1. But I have always been kicking myself for never getting my hands on the King's Field series, I really wish they would remake 1-4 and sell them as a collection, just like the upcoming Soul Reaver collection I am looking forward to.
Lost Kingdoms 1 and 2 are 2 of the 5 Gamecube games I still own to this day. Lost Kingdoms 2 is legitimately one of my favourite games. It's phenomenal.
Evergrace vid a possibility? That and Dark Cloud were 2 of my first PS2 games as a kid and really helped shape my tastes in games. Great stuff as always, Max.
I played this Lost Kingdoms 2 in my childhood! I totally forgot the name but it stuck with me! Thanks for bringing me back to these weird little gems from FromSoft
Seeing this makes me sad modern games rarely express any creativity within their mechanics. Everything is just a generic 3rd person action rpg with a dodge roll and/or parry.
The second I heard that LK title theme kick in I felt the memories come back. Lost Kingdoms is a very dear part of my childhood and I spent a few years scanning a lot of Japan-only promotional stuff to put online. And then that kickstarted my hobby of archiving game stuff and my love of Fromsoftware. I will always be Queen Katia's loyal subject.
It is so funny to me, as a From Soft fan since 2011 to still own an og copy of lost kingdom 2 and through your video realising that Im a fan since 2002. Thank you!
Interesting about the 5 Buddhas! Final Fantasy 5 is one of my favorite games. It focuses on the 4 elements (fire, water, wind, earth). The main antagonist seeks to drag everything into the “void.” This void makes more sense in light of the 5 Buddhas.
Oh hell yeah! I have such fond memories of this game! There is a duplication glitch you can do in the versus mode. If I remember right you copy your save to another card and then use that copied save to bet a card you want to dupe. Then you lose on purpose. I have a weird relationship with FromSoft. I have been a fan of their games all the way back from Kings Field. I loved armored core since 3. My Playstation I got second hand came with kingsfield. I bought Lost Kingdoms 1 and 2 for the cube. I dont know how many hours I dropped into Otogi 1 and 2. I still nostalgia over chromehound's customization and multiplayer. All that and I didn't piece it was all the same developers until Demon's souls and I started looking into their catalogue.
Yes!!! Loved this game as a kid. Got soft locked in a castle level and couldn't finish... I still have my GameCube, so maybe I'll give it another go someday!
Great video, I hope it inspires more people to try out Lost Kingdoms since they are indeed both great games! It is cute how both Lost Kingdoms 1 and Demon's Souls have very similar story setups. I didn't realise the Buddhism connections before but they do make a lot of sense.
Oh man, Lost Kingdoms was my JAM when I was younger. I also specifically picked it up because of the YuGiOh connection! Became hopelessly addicted to the first. Glad to see someone else discuss it. I never really pieced that it was From Soft until I went back to replay it years later.
This is completely unrelated but you just made me realize the order of the elements to activate the Chrono Cross in Chrono Cross is the Diamond Realm mandala and it just blew my mind.
I completely forgot about these games and didn't realize they were From Soft titles. I only played Lost Kingdoms 2. I think I rented it from Blockbuster. You just unlocked some forgotten memories for me. 😅
Definitely going to try this game, I love everything you said about it, plus I loved the yugioh games that went beyond just dueling with cards, and other interesting spins on card games, so this seems very intriguing, especially since I've played all the FromSoft games since Demon's Souls came out when I was younger
Lost kingdoms was awesome. I was lucky enough to play it when I was a little older. I had no idea that it was a from software game. That's wild. I'll never forget how good revealing the boss card at the end of a battle felt. Great game.
I’d personally say King’s Field is the OG inspiration for Soulsborne games today. It’s basically a primitive DS game, in first person perspective. It’s also where the Moonlight Sword originated.
Lost Kingdoms was suuuuuch a great game. I’ve always saw it as a 3D blueprint of what Yugioh could have been. It would be so nice if Fromsoftware brought it back.
Sadly never got to play this, I'm sure I would have loved it as a kid! But this reminded me a lot of another Gamecube exclusive, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. That was one of my favorite games growing up, and covers a lot of the same themes with the five elements. If you haven't yet, you should check it out! There is a PS4 remaster available that I found somewhat lackluster, but still worth your time.
older fromsoft games all have a thing you cant describe. thank you for putting more games on my pile of shame. you should check out shadow tower abyss. its like the prototype of souls games but standing on the kings field foundation.
I used to love these games, but will admit that young me only asked for the first one because it had a skeleton and dragon on the box, and those were cool. Bought the second one because the first was great, though I think there was an issue with the disc.
You should do a deep dive into a TV show called "the good place" The philosophy and ethics are pretty central to the story itself but it might be an interesting one to look at
Man you really should give the King's Fields games a go. KF3 is so accitentally campy, I love it. And it's so big it feels like proto Elden Ring at times or proto Dark Souls 2. KF2 is an interconnected masterpiece. And KF1 a classic that will get referenced a lot in KF3. That and since you're so big on alchemy and misteries of the occult to uncover, I HAVE to recommend Noita. Join that cult, lol it's well worth it. Specially once you KNOW and you can make your dude to be a literal GOD.
Nice ode to FromSoft. I went from retro gamer playing just classic Doom and 8bit/16bit games ignoring all AAA games, to massive fun. When I boot a FromSoft game, I am just hooked, so much I had to forbid myself for playing sometimes (like yet another build start in any of the souls, in some of them I have hundreds of hours). But I raelly like to explore their older lesser known titles. They all have that atmosphere that is captivatiing, I don't know. Modern games even later FromSoft games don't catch that as much.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I IMMEDIATLY thought of Lost Kingdoms....which was super weird for me because even though I played #1, I BARELY remember it. Not sure how my brain got this from the thumbail....I never played #2
Have you played King's Field (or even Shadow Tower)? I like them in terms of first person exploration and really good atmosphere even if the graphics are so old now.
This looks like peak psp aesthetic. There is a lot that you can cook with the setting that's more directly involved compared to, say, SMT games, since you can cycle between cards and sidegrades much more frequently. We really could do with another game in this genre of mechanics.
Holy shit I remember playing a demo or something of this game AGES ago and I could never remember what it was. Face buttons to summon monsters to attack? I've been looking for this for DECADES.
I remember playing Lost Kingdoms (never very good) but I could swear there was another similar game for the PS2. The Main Character was a princess again but older and I believe wore red armor.
I remember playing this as a kid on my gamecube. I didn't beat until i was like 10 years older. Fuck that second to last boss. I kinda would like to see it make a return.
Hello Max. The Saccharine Pale awaits you. Seek it when you are ready to recieve your "Paleblood". If you wish instead to return to The Source, I understand. But know that it is not such an intense (I assure you) experience that one cannot repress it safely. At current, it remains incomplete. I'm sure you understand the delicate importance of The Great Work. I look forward to our meeting in whenever future time determines. A word of warning, friend: Do not be strangled with the lunar pride of the Hyades. You deserve better than a dirk in the eye. Be careful. Let it be understood that this is NOT a threat (I wish absolutely no harm upon you), but rather an "Alarm Bell" being sounded upon the spotting of shifting silhouettes at the edge of the kingdom, as it endangers me as well. Please stay well and yellow my brother. (P.S. It's on steam. Have fun.)
i legit would love them to rerelease alot of their older games w some polishing and tweeks to flesh them out or fix any issues from soft has a history of just solid games worth playing
Never played their other RPGs than King's Field and Shadow Tower - might learn something about those games like Evergrace (music slaps, much like in KF4) and others.
Did you play Lost Kingdoms? Are you going to check it out?
I did but I lost my copy...
If I found an HDMI converter for my GameCube?
I have a philosophical question for you.
Is it justifiable to judge a man even knowing that his desires comes from his humanity? Judging others is to judge humanity?
I have my original copy by my gamecube downstairs! I should give it a spin. Great game.
I absolutely love how this crazy election is going on and you're just making videos analyzing esoteric traditions in 20+ year old video games that most people have never heard of.
Never change you beautiful man.
Inexplicably I owned this game but not a memory card; and my smooth child brain could not work out how to... Succeed? Cheers for the sweet little memory. Wonderful to see that it was, in fact, a thoughtful experience.
Yoooooooo Lost Kingdoms 1 and 2 are some of my favorite games. Very difficult end dungeons. Thank you for bringing recognition to these hidden gems.
yea dude lost kingdoms is sooo sick but i definitely like the first lost kingdoms the most and that last boss destroyed me
I hope that we see a bit more experimentation by fromsoft in the future. Miyazaki has repeatedly said that he wants younger designers to take a shot, while he himself wants to slow down. Lost Kingdoms 2 was the first FromSoftware title I played, and I wish there were more games like it!
Surprised you didn't mention how Roderika from Eldenring is a LostKingdoms reference. Was so happy seeing this video btw thank you for getting word out on this fantastic series!

I recommend Majulaar's Kings Field video if you're looking for something like that
You should play Lunacid.
I second Lunacid, is a modern Kings Field-like with alot of charm :)
I had both Lost Kingdoms games way back them, I remember enjoying them a lot but barely heard about them over the years.
I go all the way back to King’s Field in the 90’s; I feel old af. That series and both Shadow Tower titles are some of my favs.
Lost Kingdoms is the game that taught me "Oh man, weird games can be COOL!" Hearing all the things you pointed out really puts the game in a new light... Great video, and thanks!
Im currently binge watching your videos on dark souls, this is the best notification I could receive
I loved Lost Kingdoms. I never played it as a child but it really hits that nostalgia of early 2000s 3D games. I can't wait to play Lost Kingdoms 2.
So glad you covered this mini series by Fromsoft. I grew up on these two games. Later on played Eternal Ring (great music). Evergrace vid a possibility? That and Dark Cloud were 2 of my first PS2 games as a kid and really helped shape my tastes in games. Great stuff as always, Max.
For a moment i though that was bloody Baten Kaitos, Max.
I have both Lost Kingdom games. I never thought Id see people talk about them in 2024. I really enjoyed them both.
Oh man I can't tell you how much I love Lost Kingdoms, I think about it all the time. So hyped for this video
I lost my copy of two, but I still have and play 1 from time to time. Love these games truly ❤
I played this Lost Kingdoms 2 in my childhood! I totally forgot the name but it stuck with me! Thanks for bringing me back to these weird little gems from FromSoft
I enjoyed this game so much! It was super cool and being able to go past the last boss to explore more was amazing
A lost kingdom video : )
I vividly remember playing Lost Kingdoms 2 in GameStop and being blown away. Im surprised Ive only played the 1st one since then.
Seeing this makes me sad modern games rarely express any creativity within their mechanics. Everything is just a generic 3rd person action rpg with a dodge roll and/or parry.
I love lost kingdoms! I wish we could get a third game from them for switch or switch 2!
Lost Kingdoms 2 mentioned :)
It is so funny to me, as a From Soft fan since 2011 to still own an og copy of lost kingdom 2 and through your video realising that Im a fan since 2002. Thank you!
This franchise and Phantom Dust are two of my biggest influences for my indie game
Enchanted Arms was my first From Software game. This game seems pretty interesting. Might have to try it out myself.
Interesting about the 5 Buddhas!
Final Fantasy 5 is one of my favorite games. It focuses on the 4 elements (fire, water, wind, earth). The main antagonist seeks to drag everything into the “void.”
This void makes more sense in light of the 5 Buddhas.

Yes!!! Loved this game as a kid. Got soft locked in a castle level and couldn't finish... I still have my GameCube, so maybe I'll give it another go someday!
I had had a game cube but I had never even heard of these games. I would have absolutely loved them back then.

So excited when I saw the thumbnail! I loved this game!
I remember being like 9 or 10 playing this game just having an absolute blast. I just learned last year this was a FromSoft title
BRO I had completely forgotten about that game, I had SO much fun playing it. Didn't even realize that was a FromSoftware game
This is completely unrelated but you just made me realize the order of the elements to activate the Chrono Cross in Chrono Cross is the Diamond Realm mandala and it just blew my mind.
I legitimately want them to go back to this series in some way.
I remember playing Lost Kingdoms 2 on the GC. It was a lot of fun but also really weird and always gave me an uneasy feeling for some reason.
I completely forgot about these games and didn't realize they were From Soft titles. I only played Lost Kingdoms 2. I think I rented it from Blockbuster. You just unlocked some forgotten memories for me. 😅
I was playing #2 recently and loved it - it’s become my comfort game :3
I absolutely LOVED these two games growing up
Definitely going to try this game, I love everything you said about it, plus I loved the yugioh games that went beyond just dueling with cards, and other interesting spins on card games, so this seems very intriguing, especially since I've played all the FromSoft games since Demon's Souls came out when I was younger

Wait, Lost Kingdoms was made by FromSoftware?? I loved that game SO MUCH! This explains a lot
Wow, I really like playing the first Lost Kingdom as a kid. I didn't realize it was a FromSoftware game.
I am reminded now of the great games of Baten Kaitos. I recommend this series for its symbolic brilliance.
Alright, I think I will check it out now. Thanks for sharing, yellow man.
Another great topic, thank you Max!!
I love lost kingdoms and armored core since the PS2/game cube days.
I’d love for any other game to be similar in terms of card mechanics
Lost Kingdoms was suuuuuch a great game. I’ve always saw it as a 3D blueprint of what Yugioh could have been. It would be so nice if Fromsoftware brought it back.
Wow, I have not played Lost Kingdom but I did play Shadow of Time. That game was a trip! Time travel with multiple endings.
Obligatory admission I loved the games as a kid - my first JRPG
3:10 what about the complexity and difficulty of its older games? 🐣
Never played this game, I got into the souls games at dark souls 1; but this looks like an awesome game to modernize and bring to the present
Chromehounds mentioned! Never forget!
Experimentive? Not a word dude
The card system just screams Final Fantasy 8 Triple Triad to me.
This game looks awesome i'd never know of it if it wasn't for you.
I must play it someday
older fromsoft games all have a thing you cant describe. thank you for putting more games on my pile of shame.
you should check out shadow tower abyss. its like the prototype of souls games but standing on the kings field foundation.
the monster collection system reminds me a lot of SMT games

Cheer and enjoy!
The way you summon monsters for an attack is kinda similar to folklore, I gotta try playing that again lol...
My first fromsoft games were Eternal Ring and Evergrace. I got them for Christmas with my PS2. Evergrace was the better game.
That pitch is genius

I’m sorry, I’m not trying to be a smart-aleck, but a “full crystal bar” sounds like a candy bar. 😂 and I need it. Lol
This looks like peak psp aesthetic.

OMFG I need to go back and play this.
Love this series so much. Also the world card from persona literally looks like an uno card lol 😂
You should analyze Monolith Soft card game rpgs.
The theory of the big bang seems pretty Taoist when you get into how it started
I remember playing this as a kid on my gamecube. I didn't beat until i was like 10 years older. Fuck that second to last boss. I kinda would like to see it make a return.

Please stay well and yellow my brother.
(P.S. It's on steam. Have fun.)
Never played 2 but i remember the first one. Game was great 👍🏼
I really hope you put Slay the Princess on your list of games to play! I think you would dig it
I love this game as a kid!
went back and played most armored core game and my god i struck gold
My first From Software game was Armored Core 2: Masters of the Arena.
Lost Kingdoms using monsters for combat reminds me more of Folklore (PS3)
i legit would love them to rerelease alot of their older games w some polishing and tweeks to flesh them out or fix any issues
from soft has a history of just solid games worth playing
Never played their other RPGs than King's Field and Shadow Tower - might learn something about those games like Evergrace (music slaps, much like in KF4) and others.
Very cool, dig the deep history of the Fromsoft fog. lol
You cooked as always. Gourmet video here
