Bad Idea? RTX 3080 With I7 4770K - What Type Of Performance

  • So, what happens if you pair an RTX 3080 with an I7 4770K, well we'll find out. This video was inspired largely because I had my older haswell system sitting there, and I had recently bought a new PSU for a totally different build.
I figure this would be a fun project, and so here we are. The RTX 3080 is the founders edition card, and it wasn't overclocked. I focused my benchmarks at both 4K and the 1440P resolution, because no one is really going to game at 1080P with an rtx 3080, and even if you would, there's no competition at all against a 10900K.
I have overclocked the I7 4770K to 4.4GHz, and squeezed the RAM to tight timings at 2200mhz, which is about as fast as I can get without resorting to crazy voltage.

Well not anymore. Since I've started playing games like BF5 and Far Cry 5 etc, the CPU is really bottlenecking my 3060 ti. It really depends on the game, but truth is, the old high-end CPU is just not good enough for modern AAA games.

For 1440p and 4K this combination is absolutely fine in most games. You're GPU-limited in new games, and old games either run fast enough that it doesn't really matter, or have engine limitations that wouldn't be fixed by a faster CPU.

I have a enclosed water cooled system for it and it really doesn't ever go over 45c. Paired with a EVGA 1070 GTX SSC - 32GB of DDR3 So I'm really in limbo right now for upgrades. Just hanging on as long as I can really. Things are ridiculous right now especially for graphics cards. I still own an i7-4770K built in June 2013 with a four year old GTX 1080 Ti which is still perfectly fine for 1440p gaming at 60 fps on mostly max settings for the vast majority of the games I play. The only exceptions are CPU heavy games like the recent Assassin's Creed games which I have to cap at 30 fps to have a smooth experience but after a few minutes then even they are fine as I play most PC games with a controller anyway.
I have been wanting to upgrade to a RTX 3080 for a couple of years now but held off doing so, mostly because it wasn't possible to get one anyway at a reasonable price, but now the prices have stablised and Amazon have them in stock for £749 I am wondering if that might be the more sensible option over building a completely new PC? I am perfectly happy with 60 fps and will not be upgrading my 1440p 27" G-SYNC monitor anytime soon.
Unless you are pushing for 4K at max settings and 60-120 fps then I am not convinced that building a new system for 10-20 fps is worth the extra cost if you already have a capable system. CPU upgrades are not particularly interesting anyway in my experience but require you to buy new motherboards and memory which all adds to the expense.

Just paired a RTX 3060 Ti with my i7-4770k and it seems to have caused a major temperature problem. I then moved the GPU to a PCI-E slot not so close to CPU and temps went down closer to normal. With the earlier PCI-E slot I was having temps from 90-100C during gaming which was bad. I still use the i7 with a stock cooler, but it never caused any temp problems. My previous GPU was GTX 1060 6GB. Luckily I've already made an order for Ryzen 5 5600X. So hopefully the situation will be better with the new CPU and the 3060ti.

I am probably one of the few that is seriously considering upgrading from a Haswell 4770 RTX2080 Super to a RTX3080 or RTX4070 (when it comes) for the simple reason that I am not too keen on rebuilding my system, BUT... upgrading my screen from a 24" 1080p to a 34" ultra wide 1440p. Some of my favorite games (Post Scriptum and Squad) run JUST under the tolerance level which I am used to. I did see that your video between 2080 and 3080 showed a decent bump in fps so I assume that will compensate just enough for the 34" ultrawide with my current settings.
However I would love a video with a RTX3080 or whatever playing and showing fps in mostly "Cpu games", as they are called. Example, Arma 3, Planetside 2, Squad, Post Scriptum etc on a 34" ultrawide or similar large screens and see if there would be improvements or if the fps would be at a stand still sub 60, but with more effects.

@@edwinvillamizar04 I have a Corsair AX 1200i, 1200W PSU from 2014. Totally overkill, but at the time I also had Sli GTX780. What is important in context of old hardware is "heat over time". Keep the system cool and it will last longer. Which mine has done in a ultra tower with a 280mm closed loop radiator.
A reputable power sources that has a more W than the min specs is all you need. That said W lowers a bit over time with usage. Maybe mine is ca 1100W now in practical sense, to make an example.
At 1920x1200 and a GTX780 (single) I would play most games today above 60 fps except Arma, Squad and other CPU based games. When I upgraded to a RTX2080 I could play Killing Floor 2 with max detail without slow down. That wasnt possible before.
When I upgraded to a 34" ultra wide everything is just under optimal, but that said. I did NOT notice a huge fps gain from GTX780 to RTX2080 super in CPU heavy games. There was some, but nothing compared to what a modern CPU would grant me.
Bottom line, it is hard to "recommend" using a 4770K and RTX2 or more, but you can and still gain a benefit. That said I would NOT buy a RTX2 today because it is old tech, but if you got one really cheap and you already had a 4770 then it would be okay.
If you are buying a new system or a used computer. It is a gamble. You wont find many system treated as well as the one I have. Old tech doesnt have warranty.

Instead of building a whole new comp, if you have this cpu, just upgrade the gpu and get a 4k gsync/free monitor.
This cpu has no problems running 4k games when paired with an expensive gpu. You wont even notice the bottle neck with a 144hz gsync/free sync monitor. 80fps and 120fps is not noticable at all.
Dont go building a new computer and pairing it with a 60z monitor. The monitor will be your bottleneck.

What's the point? You can overclock an E3 1231 v3. There are limits on clock multipliers, but you can increase "BCLK ratio" which overclocks just the CPU and RAM, and can easily be compensated for by reducing the memory clock multiplier. Even aside from that it's a minimal upgrade that's not worth the cost or effort, staying on the same architecture and core count and only getting a minor increase in clock speed.

I'm using a 5930k @ stock with a 3080 and 1080p240hz monitor so this video is perfect for me. Warzone shows I have a big CPU bottleneck. 85% CPU usage, 25% GPU usage at 1080p120hz. Which would be fine if I wasn't trying to push 1080p240hz.
I was planning on waiting for DDR5 to go mainstream but I'm figuring that's at least 18 months away, just too long of a wait. Now I'm looking to go Zen3 once they are in stock. Probably going for a 5900x over a 5600x because I think games will start scaling better with more cores and threads.
