I was thinking, Jeez, that's a lot. And then I realized a year of college is a LOT, these days. I don't know about the habit of 'stacking' financial aid offers to prove you're a good student, though. People, who 'stack' reality to paint a picture of themselves, think they make up the rules. There is no intrinsic value in applying to 50 schools, just so you can use your calculator. There are MANY scholarships students don’t know about. Many scholarships sometimes only have 1 or 2 applicants. Everyone applies to the major scholarships. As a someone who worked at a college, I directed students to apply to as many scholarships as possible and focus more on scholarships that are unknown. There’s also persistence and time and energy. More students will apply to 1-3 scholarships. There’s another student who may apply to 30. Just like the those super successful people..they do what the majority may not.
i would wager most people, regardless of how successful their academic career, simply don’t seek out so many scholarships and offers. people who have a drive like this young man does also tend to have a path in mind so naturally wouldn’t concern themselves with applying excessively. but I guess he is weighing his options and, given he has set a record (highest combined value of tertiary offers) has probably reached a point where he figures he may as well keep applying. that being said, it’s difficult to say that many students have a similar level of achievement as this young man-we don’t know the ins and outs of his academic career, right?

My local law school only has $500 in scholarships that I'd be eligible for, but $10k each from multiple organizations and a full ride from the school itself that he'd be eligible for if he applied. To say they're all merit based is suspicious, look up what a national merit scholarship is ($2500) and one wonders if it was 'merit based' or merit based in a manner that excludes 70% of the population.
