I don't know about the habit of 'stacking' financial aid offers to prove you're a good student, though. People, who 'stack' reality to paint a picture of themselves, think they make up the rules. There is no intrinsic value in applying to 50 schools, just so you can use your calculator. I wish this kid luck. He's doing well. He might consider staying in Louisianna.

As a someone who worked at a college, I directed students to apply to as many scholarships as possible and focus more on scholarships that are unknown.
There’s also persistence and time and energy. More students will apply to 1-3 scholarships. There’s another student who may apply to 30. Just like the those super successful people..they do what the majority may not.

My local state school brags that incoming freshmen average a 4.25 GPA, so his maintaining a 4.0 resulting in $9 million in scholarships and 125 acceptances seems a bit odd. My local law school only has $500 in scholarships that I'd be eligible for, but $10k each from multiple organizations and a full ride from the school itself that he'd be eligible for if he applied. To say they're all merit based is suspicious, look up what a national merit scholarship is ($2500) and one wonders if it was 'merit based' or merit based in a manner that excludes 70% of the population.
