Coolest project? I’m making a fine art piece that will be a quilt with the words “REST IS RESISTANCE” and using yarn, beads, some fabric paint, patchworking, etc….its gonna be YELLOW and PURPLE and I am psyched.
Mum and I are doing a patchwork workshop on my birthday! I've never patch worked and I'm excited. Also it's a free workshop run by our local library so that's super cool too.
I make t shirts (out of second hand/ salvaged fabrics) for my shop and stretch sewing is super quick and fun once you get across the machines and needles and whatnot! Some domestic machines just hate certain fabrics and you have to find the perfect combo of thread, needle and tension. Next time you should try faux flatlocking on the overlocker!
I think you're in Brisbane? I work at The Sewing Lair at Moorooka and we have some books on overlocking that are kind of vintage but sooooo helpful with the core techniques. You can do heaps of things with overlockers!
If you have a domestic machine that has the lightning bolt stitch you can use that to sew seams with. Decrease the width of the stitch somewhere around 1.5-2. It looks fairly straight but it stretches. Also check which way your fabric stretches the most, this becomes the width way. Because that’s where the stretch is needed on a body. Love your content. 😊
I was going to say this, the lightning stitch is so superior to a zigzag. It looks better, and it actually stretches more since it doubles back like a back stitch. The only downside is its almost impossible to unpick
I'm on a sewing project hiatus for exam season but I'm slowly making it thru me and my friends' mends and alterations list in the meantime! I'm also still kind of riding the high of making my first halloween costume!
Twin needle on domestic sewing machine only looks like coverstitch. It is stretchy, it kinda looks like coverstitch, but it is much more problematic. So I think gwtting a coverstitch for that cheap was a good decision

When I sew neckbands I always pin in more places, I’ll quarter it and then pin again halfway between every quarter (so 8 places) Depending on the size I’ll even pin halfway between every pin again (so 16 places) I find that the more pins the more spread out any excess fabric is so it’s let’s noticeable
Bikinis were my first dive into sewing! It’s said to be the black belt of sewing 😅. Edgewater Ave patterns are the best and she has UA-cam tutorials to help you along. I love your spirit, enthusiasm and talent! 🫶🏻💗

Re: sewing stretch on a domestic: you can also use wooly nylon thread in the bobbin, and/or adjust the bobbin tension. I have some thin neoprene that I absolutely CANNOT get my domestic to hold a stitch in.

Ooh teeeny tip about sewing neck bands, when dividing your bodice into quarters, make sure you match the front and back centre fronts to find where the middle points are on the remainder by the shoulder seam. It’s not always at the shoulder seams and that could be the reason why you’re top is a bit wonky. From, an avid knit project maker 😊 Ps, I highly recommend Ellie and Mac Patterns and Petite Stitchery & Co Patterns. I have several more recommendations but these ones are in my opinion great patterns and have a wide variety of styles and patterns
Ironically the first real fabric I’ve bought and worked on was stretch velvet and I loved it idk why maybe because like I was just chilling kinda hoping it would work out and it did!
maybe this discovery on thread quality and stretch will fix the issue you had with that cool double red dress you made! the seam popping might have been because of the fabric not liking the needle/thread combo

I decided to keep all my cheap tread for handsewing and basting (usually use old, old tread for basting but when I need the basting to last a bit longer or when it’s with more tension, I’ll use “fresh” not-yet-disintegrating tread). I will need more trips to buy Gütermann (that’s kinda the only quality one I find locally) but when buying 1 or maybe 2 or 3 at a time when I’ve planned more than 1 fabric/color, it should be doable. I love your enthousiasme. Thought this was my first video of yours I watched but just realized I recognized you or your name (you know how “naggingly vague” it can be sometimes, almost not worth calling it a form of recognition lol). Anyway, recognize something from I didn’t know where or what so checked and it was the magic pants from Ann Tilley that I saw. Still need to make that one but didn’t know which fabric yet. Have you made those pants again? Also, upon checking, I saw congrats are in order so congratulations on the engagement! Looking forward to seeing the wedding dress unfold. Now, back to the remaining of this video but WOW I LOVE that cotton fabric of your romper ❤❤❤ you’re right to love all the items though!
I’ve not been able to get a twin needle to work right, even on different machines. I bought a coverstitch and sort of regret it. I paid $600 for a machine that does one thing (sewing hems, mostly on knits), but it does it very well. I wish I had found a $100 older machine. My machine is plastic and I hate the sound it makes (I only use vintage machines for regular sewing). At least yours will last a while. Usually I reduce the length of the neckband to 75 - 80% of the neck opening.
Speaking of mistakes - last night I was altering the neckline of some turtleneck undershirts to make them crew neck. hile unpicking the neckline, I completely stopped paying attention and fully unpicked one of the shoulder seams 🙃 oh well I sewed it back together best I could but I just felt so silly
I mean, if I saw an industrial coverstitch machine for that price I would also be very tempted. Lack of space and lack of interest in stretch projects be damned (I’m not completely uninterested, there is just nothing I’d make for myself with it)😂

I made a bodice with a back shoulder dart and it when I wore it it has excess fabric at the end of the dart point, like a little mount fuji.. 😅😅 can you please advise what to do...
Carly. I love your videos so much. Your video on why I need to learn to start sewing gave me the inspiration to start. I made 2 giant scrunchies and I purchased and successfully created the soften tote and it is my prized possession. I’m going to do a pair of pants next. Very excited about that. I am forcing my husband to watch this video with me and he keeps expressing his concern for your wristlet pin cushion and he is concerned that if you were to fall on your wrist, or bump it, all the pins would go through and puncture you (intrusive thoughts for the win😅) does it have a plate on the bottom to prevent said injury? 17:38 anyways, his concern caused me to be concerned so now I’m making this comment in hopes that if you haven’t thought about that before and it is indeed a dangerous possibility maybe it could prevent an injury? 😭 I don’t know if I commented on your video where you said you were engaged but I was so giddy about that video and I CAN NOT WAIT to watch you go through the process of creating your stunning dress. 😭 Congratulations, Carly! I want to start but am not sure about tax and website versus Etsy etc. I would love my own website but then do you need an ABN and do you have to declare your very small (in my case) earnings to the tax man? It’s so confusing! I am in Australia so would love to know. Cheers

Shoulder seams are usually not exactly in 1/4 of the tshirt. So ot is actually better to check where exactly the neckband should be pinned

Do you have the right stitch plate in your domestic machine? Can’t do zigzag with a single hole stitch plate.

The Garden Dress pattern also has layers - otherwise the pintucks piece would be a nightmare to mark properly!
