    Once in a while I turn all the lights out in my house, light up my little wizard on a table, then have snacks and beer while staring at the flame. Brings back memories of my childhood when power wasn't reliable back then.

      I do the same, such a nice light. I've also been interested in an Aladdin mantle oil lamp for a little more candlepower to read by. Sadly, when I was a kid my folks just used candles. Could of used a few BTUs in an all electric house!

      Sorry for the confusion if i caused any because i only realized it after i removed the gunk that covered the markings today (she hung it in a small storage hut where she grills meat next to it, so a lot of the grease like components were stuck on the surface. I can attest to the longevity of that oil. I have a bottle that was purchased back in the 90s that's still good, and we also have an oil lamp that was used so infrequently because it was missing a chimney. it hasn't needed to be filled since the mid 1980s and the oil in that is still just fine. I put a new chimney on it last year during a power outage and it worked fine.

    “Oil” is short for “coal oil”, aka kerosene. The term lamp oil sounds more romantic than kerosene. So they relabel the K-1 kerosene as “lamp oil” and charge 3 times the price, and sell it in 1-gallon jugs.

      Great question. This is something I haven’t tried personally since I always keep a gallon or two of oil in reserve. A quick search online reveals it will burn if the wick is soaked but that cooking oil is too thick to continue to climb a vertical wick, may cause faster deterioration of the wick, and will be smoky. In an emergency scenario it can be done but I don’t recommend it otherwise if just the power is out. Hope you are well and are not presently in a hurricane! Thank you for watching -CO

      Hello and welcome to the world of lanterns! The D-Lite (black) and Blizard (red) each use a 7/8" wick while the Little Wizard (blue) uses a 5/8" wick. The wider the wick the more light the lantern can produce. To my eye the Little Wizard does not produce that much less light than the other two. What a difficult question! For me, the Blizzard edges out the D-Lite by just a small amount. I like the larger 6" high globe and feel the light is allowed to spread out upwards and out than the "Nu-Style" squatter globes. From my experience to help you choose: 1) The D-Lite has the easiest globe (the glass) to clean with the largest diameter openings and was the largest Dietz ever made. 2) A smaller lantern and smaller globe is a bit easier to pack out and keep protected while on a trip. Good luck and let me know which one you choose! -CO

The American Made WTK #2 is a copy of the Dietz #80 Blizzard but is out of stock until they can bring production online again. It's kinda funny that the WTK website calls their product "premium grade" and Dietz "standard grade". There are maybe two or three small differences, but not enough to justify the premium especially when they are 98% copies. There was no apparent difference in how they burned vs my Blizzard. The biggest difference would be they offer some galvanized models, and so does one Dietz, but this wouldn't be an item I leave outside in when not in use and so far my Dietz are rust free. Oh gosh, yes me and the SO once rented an electric baseboard heat house and man was it expensive. We live in the last area of the US which still uses oil heat and I really dislike it, but the energy companies are not expanding natural gas. I would not count on a Dietz lantern for providing any noticeable difference in heating a room. I have noticed a slight change when using it in a tent, but as with burning any type of fuel, you need to be mindful of bringing in fresh air. Some people may be susceptible to fumes/particulates in the air from candles or burning wicks. I have been to houses that use kerosene heaters, if you don't mind the smell, this will produce carbon monoxide so it's also imperative to crack a window for some fresh air. Best investment would be some merino base layers and keep the house somewhat comfortable thereafter. Wishing you the best of luck =)

    • @CroakerOutdoors
      @CroakerOutdoors  Рік тому

      Interesting idea! When burning fuel of any kind indoors it's recommended to crack a window to allow fresh air to enter. IMO the relatively small amount of heat generated by these lanterns would be negated by any cool/cold air entering into your van. The Dietz range from 900-1100 BTU/hr while the human body ranges from a quarter to third of that in heat output. Theoretically having three people in your van would have the same effect! Regarding any type of camping you need to first look at your clothing and layering system. Body heat retention is key. After that I am a fan of a quality diesel heater for convenience but the ambiance of a small wood burning stove can't be beat when done right. A Mr. Buddy heater is an inexpensive way to heat a small space again with a window cracked. For all of these situations, including my winter hot tent, I bring a CO alarm too. Thanks for watching!

      There was a weird issue when I combined the audio and video, the video was a little bit slower. It was more pronounced in the later parts of the video. To clarify It was three taps, black red black, for the 7/8” wick and “this” the blue little wizard, was 5/8”. It makes sense if you go by the audio. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    How long does it last when it is full?
    Do you recommend lighting it outside your house by a side walk, at night when you leave. So you can have it on when you come home?

    • @CroakerOutdoors
      @CroakerOutdoors  3 роки тому +8

      The two lanterns on the sides in the video (D-Lite and Blizzard) will last for 26 hours and the middle lantern (Little Wizard) will burn for 45 hours. Walmart sells lamp oil for $7.88/64oz which I calculated these lanterns run at $0.10 per hour.
      Where these lanterns excel is as a beacon and lighting up a close up or interior space. At night when I leave my campsite I leave the lantern on and it marks my spot for when I return from the bath house or walk and I can recognize the light because all sites begin to look the same. Especially sites far in from the road, I leave it a little ways in on the gravel drive and it it's stolen it's not that expensive. For lighting an interior room if the power goes out the warm glow emanating and bouncing off the walls is the perfect amount. Having dinner at night at the campsite, this is a really nice light for the table because it does not burn your eyes out like a Coleman white gas lantern and has more character than a LED light not to mention a better color temperature. For your purposes, you totally could leave it by your house as a beacon but you are not going to have the equivalency of an flood light. These tools came from a time before bright electricity and people only knew the light of small fuel burning flames when the sun went down.

    Telling people that when the outerrim of the base gets rusted and may leak oil is not true. These lanterns have an inner container and if not shaken violently there should be no oil touching the outerrim of the base.

      I will double check your statement when I get home but I am fairly certain there is one single wall in the fount. They are very simple devices and I do not see the reasoning to design an interior container that you speak of.

      You should check the middle where the wicks enter, If it is all closed, than there is no airflow from beneath the wick or there is but the air goes over the fuel...

      Following up, I removed the burners from all three (Blizz, Lil Wiz, & D-Lite) and inserted a borescope. It's really just a single wall as I originally said. I have the blue Little Wizard in front of me right now and when I touch the seam between the bottom plate and upper fount there is lamp oil on my finger. Where one may think there is a inner container is when the fount meets the lower cold blast assembly. This is where the fresh air tubes route air below the burner and channel it through the burner and to the flame). Dietz does a good job of mating the two and creating a visually seamless connection over which is painted.

    Can this lantern use Coleman camping fuel?

    • @CroakerOutdoors
      @CroakerOutdoors  3 роки тому +1

      Definitely not. Lantern oil or kerosene only. From what I read, using gasoline/white gas/camping fuel can cause explosions. On a full font, the lantern will last a long trip burning many hours each night. I save the camping fuel for the dual fuel lantern and stove.

      These are modern imprints you can buy off the shelf right now from Dietz. The dates stated are when the model was first released. Aside from the just about pristine condition, the hologram sticker of authenticity would be another indicator they are not 70-100 years old themselves. Thank you for your comment.
