Sad fact about Lulu. It is also the very last studio album that Lou Reed worked on before his death. So that makes it even more frustrating.
Perfect way to go out…an album that pissed everybody off. He even received death threats. If you know Lou Reed, there’s no better note to end on. Plus, Junior Dad is a great final track.
@@zachjohnson637yeah he just did what he wanted
which is the best kind of artist imo
Fantastic video; I quite enjoy your approach. It's so refreshing to listen to a ranking (or any sort of discussion) regarding a metal band from someone with an extensive vocabulary, a vast array of references and, most importantly, a sense of humor. Thank you very much indeed.
Dude... Nothing Else Matters was 100% Hetfield, including the solo.
I like that you're able to talk about and rank Metallica without talking them down. Too many other rankings are always talking how much they don't like anything the band did after The Black Album and how bad musicians they are. No doubt that the first 4 or 5 albums are the best, but there is some good songs on the others as well.
Exactly. I always say that if they're such bad musicians they would have never gotten as far as they have. I think the hating comes from the band becoming a commercial success and I bet almost any metal band would love to have Metallica's level of success at the expense of them 'selling out'.
I never understood the criticism of their musicianship. Not a big Lars fan but their riffage is powerful.
15: Lulu
14: St. Anger
13: S&M 2
12: Death Magnetic
11: Kill 'em All
10: Hardwired ... to Self-Destruct
09: Garage Inc.
08: 72 Seasons
07: Load
06 S&M
05: Re-Load
04: And Justice For All
03: Black Album
02: Ride the Lightning
01: Master of Puppets
And Justice For All is by a whisker my fave album . It’s where they seemed to develop and stretch their talents
The making it sound like shit on purpose simply has to have sone points deducted imo
I'm steeling about 9 quotes from this monologue. Splendid stuff and loving your channel!
Great review cant really argue with your rankings well thought out and concise
1. Master
2. Ride
3. Justice
4. Kill
5. LuLu
I just finished my Metallica ranking yesterday:
1. Ride The Lightning
2. Master Of Puppets
3. ...And Justice For All
4. Kill 'Em All
5. Metallica
6. Death Magnetic
7. 72 Seasons
8. Hardwired...To Self-Destruct
9. Load
10. Reload
11. St. Anger
where Lulu?
@@emceesmith6665 I didn't count it because it is Lou Reed & Metallica, but if I did it would be dead last
If you switch 6 and 8 our list would be exactly the same
@@bestevaar7195 cool that we almost have the same list
This is how a typical Metallica fan would rank the albums. In my book Load and Garage go near the top. Metallica was my first full album I listened to, so it goes to #1. Master Of Puppets was the very first Metallica song I ever heard (that was amazing!), and the Unforgiven the first ballad (that was unbelievable how good it felt). As much as I hated the Load when it came out it has grown on me. I would say musically thats the best performance they were able to achieve. All the thrash albums are simple, but good, really good, especially ofcorse the first 5.
Great show! I’m not particularly into Metallica, but most enjoyable learning about these later albums. I’m almost tempted to have a listen to Lulu now.
Nice rankings . I’d raise Death Magnetic a spot or two but that’s just me.
Great ranking I’d love to see you rank aphex twin or even Björk in the future
Cheers! I enjoy your lists and the way you describe your tastes and of each albums' merits, and sometimes flaws.
I have a request: Where did you get your Supertramp Crime of the Century shirt? I have been searching for a quality shirt from that band, of that particular (awesome/favorite) record for some time. I only seem to find online the knock off, Chinese "iron-on" type versions, and really would like one like the one you are wearing in this video.
I would GREATLY appreciate any info so I could get one of those cool shirts.
Keep the great content coming. Thumbs up from me every time I watch, without hesitation.
I can't remember tbh
I like the Load and Reload albums, but at that time I created a cd of the best of both and listened to that instead, as I did with Radiohead's Kid A and Amnesiac albums - still listen to them now and the originals sit in their box. Black album the one i still pull out the most. great video - thank you sir!
ReLoad ranks above Load for me personally. A little more straightforward. Bleeding Me on Load is the hidden gem for me. Glad you also rank 72 Seasons where you do, I do as well, but I do also agree some additional editing was in order.
I agree about Reload but we are in the minority
Bleeding Me- great song, one of my favourites by Metallica in their entire catalogue.
The real hidden gems on Load are "Thorn Within" and "Outlaw Torn". To me those two songs defines how really good that album is. Bleeding me is good, but somewhat boring and a bit softer. I also like a lot Wasting My Hate, Mama Said, Ronnie and Ain't my Bitch. The hidden gem on ReLoad is Fixxxer, I think its the best song on ReLoad.
Oh, lordy lord !
VERY interested to know your 2cents on this one, good Sir!!
*EDIT* Couldn't agree more; oddly & exactly so, in fact!. & wonderfully eloquent & witty as usual ("well weathered scrotum")
Many thanks :)
20:38 ... strange beard transition
Metallica is quite easy to rank for me. Four great albums from the 80's, and then a bunch of unflushed "floaters". Although, Death Magnetic was pretty good...sort of.
1. Master of Puppets
2. ...And Justice for All
3. Ride the Lightning
4. Kill 'em All
5. Death Magnetic
6. St. Anger
7. Hardwired...To Self Destruct
8. 72 Seasons
9. Metallica
10. Load
11. Reload
Exactly how I would have ranked their albums. Really enjoyed the commentary, as well.
Long time M fan here! Seen them live on AJFA tour my very first concert! Been looking forward to this one my friend!
Loudest concert I ever went to was AJFA. We had Queensryche as the opener which was sweet.
Another excellent ranking, similar to mine though I’d swap the top 2 & put the Black album at 3.
Pretty much nailed the order, I think. I've been a fan since I was 13(50 at present) when I first heard Anesthesia at...church camp. Just recently discovered a live version with fills and improv I'd never knew existed. It was a good day.
Brilliant reviews! Top man🫡
"..with Lars Ulrich banging away on a couple of Quality Street tins".... fkn LOL!!
I smirked at that as I have myself described the drum sound on that album as like Lars smashing a Quality Street tin with a frying pan. That is exactly what it sounds like 🤣
I really liked this ranking. Most would put ride the lightening top, don’t get me wrong it’s a superb album, but master of puppets for me is the pinnacle. It was the first Metallica album that I ever listened to but I don’t think I’m swayed by that…
From that intro of battery to the outro of damage inc.
The perfect bookends to a sublime album. I couldn’t get enough of it back in the day and still love it today.
Agreed. Puppets all day long. Ride second place. It’s close, but puppets will always be the pinnacle
12 Lulu
11 St Anger
10 Reload
9 Load
8 72 Seasons
7 Hardwired to self destruct
6 Death Magnetic
5 And Justice For All
4 The Black Album
3 Kill Em All
2 Ride the lightning
1 Master of Puppets
Great ranking, close to perfect..from a 30 year Metallica fan!
Thanks for another brilliant ranking video. Could you apply your articulate analysis to the great, under-rated UFO? Would love to see that.
Love UFO
@@classicalbum This reply has made my day! Please can you do a ranking video on them. Would love to hear your views on their work.
Maybe one day, but they're not on my radar at the moment
Impressive breakdown. Love the channel. Would love to see ranking of Ronnie James Dio fronted album to include Elf, Rainbow, Sabbath, Dio and Heaven n Hell. That would be interesting....and challenging.
Great suggestion!
A bit surprised you put Black Album ahead And Justice for All. The first four albums should be a monolitic thing, whatever album you prefer, the real thing, the metal thing (even they evolved a lot during this four albums), and after that, came the big change. But I understand your arguments. I like you said that One has to be in any top 10 of Metallica. I watch your videos and I learn a lot. Thank you.
I don’t agree but u are the best ranker I’ve seen on youtube
Pretty good list. I would move around a couple of them. Maybe have And Justice higher than the black album and I would go with Ride The Lightning as Metallica's best album. Still working on 72 Seasons. Not quite sure where I think it fits at this point. Its better than most of the Load, Reload and St Anger periods but I dont know if its better than Hardwired or Death Magnetic.
Great ranking Barry, though I’ve never got the love for Death Magnetic myself - sounds like the band are trying way too hard to be their younger selves on that one. The two follow-up albums are much better sounding to me cause they sound like they’re enjoying it more and so the 80’s thrash style songs sound much more natural. Totally agree as well that 72 Seasons may be their best since Black Album (though hard to say for sure as I haven’t sat with it for long enough yet).
Seems that Death Magnetic gets some undeserved hate. Just the opposite what they did with the Load. Just listen to Suicide & Redemption.
What about Garage Inc. and Beyond Magnetic? Since you have Lulu on the list.
Death Magnetic underrated as hell.
1. Metallica
2. Load
3. Garage Inc.
4. Master of Puppets
5. ...And Justice For All
6. Ride The Lightning
7. Death Magnetic
8. Kill Em All
9. Hardwired to Self Destruct
10. Re Load
11. St. Anger.
12. 72 (have not yet listened to it).
Best Metallica song ever: Master Of Puppets. I like Thorn Within and Outlaw Torn.
Pretty accurate. I’d just swap 72 Seasons and Death Magnetic
As a young teen I loved the buzzsaw guitars of Justice and the speed of Kill. Listened to Death Mag lots when it was released.
Can you do a video ranking motley crue albums?
1. AJFA 2. MOP 3. RTL 4. DM 5. KEA 6. Black 7. St Anger 8. Hardwired 9. Load 10. Reload 11. 72 seasons 12. Lulu
Good list although I would put And Justice above the Black album even if Jason's bass is missing.
I'm 18 in 1988 so yeah, that fall and the next spring I saw them in concert and pretty much listened to them the most. And then it changed.
Can't rank em but I know Lula will always be famous for:
I am The Table!
1. Metallica
2. Ride the Lighting
3. Master of Puppets
Fade to Black is my all time favorite song.
well done sir !
I would have left Lulu out altogether. It's more of a Lou Reed album, for which he hired Metallica as studio musicians. If you like like Mr. Reed's experimental avant-garde stuff, you might like Lulu.
It's an collaboration album 50/50.
My list would be the same, except "Justice" would be #3 for me. Putting the music aside, what happened to their album artwork after "And Justice For All"? Those first four records had amazing, iconic artwork and then, after that, the covers just looked ugly to me. Thanks for the video!!
The music always defines and makes the album cover artwork.
Some albums are entirely white.
Metallica artwork with the snake was good. Probably they should have made it a bit more visible. My favorite album art work is the cover of Garage Inc. Crazy!
Good ranking. Personally I would put Kill em all and Hardwired lower on the list but other than that …
My rankings:
1. Ride The Lightning
2. Master Of Puppets
3. Metallica
4. Kill 'Em All
5. ...And Justice For All
6. Death Magnetic
7. Hardwired... To Self-Destruct
8. 72 Seasons
9. Load
10. Reload
11. St. Anger
The solo on nothing else matters is James
Up until Load, James did ALL the guitars on the albums, with Kirk just doing leads (I believe).
@@dan1216 possibly but he praises Kirk for the nothing else matters solo and it's James
@@dan1216 that's correct but Hetfield does one of the solos on 'One' as well as the solo on ' Nothing Else Matters '
Love that Master Of Puppets album almost as much as your bollock puns in the video.. top notch 👌
The whole thing is
"Like a well weathered scrotum, it kind of sags as well"
"As welcome as a fart in a diving suit" 😅😅😅😅😅
How you can deliver these hilarious zingers with a straight face and such dead pan delivery is beyond me. Brilliant.
My ranking: ❤
1 - The Black Album
2 - Ride The Lightning
3 - Load
4 - LuLu
5 - ReLoad
6 - Garage Inc.
7 - Master Of Puppets
8 - Kill em all
9 - Death Magnetic
10 - Hardwired To Self destruct
11 - 72 Seasons
12 - And Justice For All
13 - Beyond Magnetic
14 - St. Anger
Fun fact, the name death magnetic was mainly a tribute to late Alice In Chains frontman Layne Staley
"Am I evil".Not as good as Diamond Heads but still up there. On the original version Tatlers guitar is bloody awesome.
I have the Black Album & Justice for All box sets . Bloody great . I also have the Lulu box set . Hard to find with a couple of great songs .
worst to best:
Hardwired, Kill Em All, St. Anger, 72 Seasons, Reload, Ride The Lightning, Load, Black Album, Death Magnetic, Master Of Puppets, And Justice For All
I will say - and, as a matter of fact, I got into a little dispute over this just the other day (which is so silly, as these are all mere opinions) - that I actually like the sound/production/mix on AJFA. It really compliments and enhances the aggressive, angular nature of the compositions and overall attitudes expressed therein (nothing "swings" on this album - and it shouldn't). I've always felt that the dryness, tightness, and closeness/immediacy of the mix was entirely appropriate. Love the guitar and bass drum sounds. Just my take on it. Mileages will vary.
I think people get silly over people expressing opinions... surely the more important thing is we are all listening to this great music
Hw > dm > 72s > St anger > reload
Tremendous imagery… the scrotum simile was gold.
Kill Em’ All is my favourite. I didn’t listen to metal before hearing it.
22:07 Mustaine didn't co-write Bells, but he did co-write Ride the Lightning and The Call of Ktulu.
I'm quoting the book by Mick Wall on Metallica.
Sagging scrotums and ball batter 🤣🤣🤣seaside postcard humour aside, If they'd trimmed the fat from Load/Re-load and put out just one album I think there would be a lot more love for that era, my ranking runs pretty similar too yours apart from my top five which is
5. Metallica
4. Kill Em All
3. And Justice For All
2. Master of Puppets
1. Ride the Lightning
For me the first five are in the top 6 along with the excellent return to bold form of 72 Seasons, then , well the other are all in the bottom 6/
12. Lulu
11. St Anger
10. Reload
9. Kill ‘Em All
8. Hardwired
7. Lightning
6. Black Album
5. 72
4. Death Magnetic
3. Load
2. Puppets
1. Justice
Great video - really enjoyed it. You got both ends spot on. The public never ever need hear the like of Lulu ever again and Puppets is quite possibly the greatest metal album ever made, let alone Metallica’s finest. Where I have to disagree is the reason for Justice being any less than third. Possibly second. That album is class - the songs are incredible - whether you can hear the bass or not, to me, does not make the songs themselves worse. They just could have sounded better. Great work though, enjoyed watching this one!
Justice
Lightning
Master
St. Anger
Death Magnetic
Kill 'em All
Lulu
Load
Reload
Black Album
Hardwired
72 Seasons
Something like that.
On Justice, the abscence of bass reflects the abscence of any warmth that the members felt in their lives at the time. It is a perfect metaphor or symbol for everything that was going on with them, and also the entire thrust of the record...bleak, negative, nihilistic, cynical, hateful, hopeless. Black metal took this approach and ran with it..whether that´s a direct consequence or not I have no idea, but the entire debate about production on Justice completely misses the point. It is done on purpose, and reintroducing a big warm bass sound into the record misses the point entirely. That feeling of being stuck inside a box, claustraphobia, is all descibed in the song One..and the matchbox production is a direct reflection of that. Indeed it could be argued that the production is quite possibly what makes this album a true masterpiece in terms of the fusion of the music, theme and sound. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it the next time you all listen to the album.
"an unflushed floater" hahahahahah
I laughed too. Clever fella.
Pretty much perfect ranking, though I personally prefer Ride The Lightning over Master...
Agreed.
It absolutely blows my mind that anyone would wast what little time they have on earth listening to the black album or anything since (aside from Lulu which actually rules).
Sometimes it blows my mind how great Load and Garage Inc. albums are. Suicide & Redemption! Pure Metallica.
Lulu is NOT a Metallica album - it’s a Lou Reed album with Metallica as his backing band. And anyone, including Cliff Burton would jump at the chance for that collaboration.
You’re right, it’s just unfortunate that I cannot stand Lou Reed. It’s a totally bizarre and confusing collaboration.
Agree on that, its not Metallica album. But Garage Inc should have been included. It consists of covers, but its their studio album. A lot of artists have cover songs in their albums. Deservers more credit. Its one of the few Metallica albums I listen to regulary.
My ranking before watching your video:

4. Kill 'Em All (1983)
3. ...And Justice for All (1988)
2. Master of Puppets (1986)
1. Ride the Lightning (1984)
Pretty accurate other than Metallica which I feel is a little low
I don't dig that one, don't know why.
I even considered ranking it 9th, behind 72 Seasons.
I would put 72 in the bottom and upgrade hardwired which I find a lot better.

I prefer the '90s. The only albums I own on vinyl are Load, Reload and Garage Inc. :)
You are not alone. I like the stoner rock or stoner metal approach of these albums. Thorn Within, Outlaw Torn, Fixxxer, Loverman!
Well done!
Not my favorite but Load and ReLoad much maligned, but maybe not deserved
Great video but surely Justice should be higher than Kill em all! Justice is a masterpice in my mind 1st or 2nd
Sure... It should be a notch up... it's just the sound of it i find bit grating

This'll probably change in the future, and it's already quite different from a few years ago, but this is where I'm at now:
1. S&M
2. Master of Puppets
3. Metallica
4. Ride the Lightning
5. ...And Justice for All
6. Garage Inc.
7. Death Magnetic
8. Kill 'Em All
9. Reload
10. Load
11. Hardwired
12. 72 Seasons
13. S&M2 (less to do with its quality, and more to do with its redundancy with S&M1)
14. St. Anger
15. Lulu
Here is my list
1) Master of Puppets( magnum opus production and all )
Ride the lightning( could have been their magnum opus, yet technically the sound is way better on MoP )
3) Kill'em all
4) Death Magnetic
5) ... and Justice for all
6) Eponymous
7) 72 Seasons
The rest are not for me
Where there twins ranking on this? Just before Ride The Lightning review.....funny video.

1. Ride the lightning
2. Master of puppets
3. And justice for all
4. Kill 'em all
5. Black album
6. Load
7. Reload
8. Death magnetic
9. 72 seasons
10. Hardwired to self destruct
11. St. Anger
I love your lists and analysis, but of course have to state where I disagree, I wouldn't be a proper rock fan if I didn't right? I'd personally swap St. Anger with Reload just because I think that latter album is trash (few people will argue Lulu being their worst since the worst part of Lou Reed is his "singing" imo [he's made some good tunes in the past despite his bad phrasing and voice]).
Moreover though, is the perpetual high ranking of the self-titled "black album" which I loved at the time as a stupid teenager after absorbing their previous catalogue after climbing on the Metallica bandwagon after the One video. The facade of the heavy nature temporarily blinded me to the severe downgrade in musical and heavy-metal quality of their first 4 albums, which did all flirt with the hitherto unknown concept of prog-metal. I was on board for Enter Sandman and Unforgiven as my then favorite band stormed popular music and MTV, however within a year I found myself returning more and more to those first four golden albums. Then Load was released. While Load was not as terrible in hind sight as I thought at the time, it laid bare the reality that a once great band had been brought to heel in the name of commercialism (their subsequent Napster fight solidified this idea with us [former?] fans). For these reasons I have all but shunned the black album and have a hard time listening to anything on it anymore, although oddly enough the one of the few tunes I can actually still tolerate in it is Nothing Else Matters, a song that many of the previously devout had instantly forsaken. For this I would relegate the black album way down the lists below Hardwired (which I think you properly ranked), simply because it is responsible for all of their bad albums and songs to come.
Personally I love the sound of Justice, always have, it is my favorite collection of Metallica songs, with the title track, To Live is to Die, and The Eye of the Beholder all probably making my top 10 Metallica songs list. I, however, do not take issue with others perception of it, since I know (now) that so many have issues with the lack of bass sound on it - I personally love how that album sounds. In fact, I have no issue with how anybody ranks the top 4 Metallica albums so long as they are the first 4, they are all 10/10 albums for me (although I think Kill 'em All is a bit raw and lacks the great sound and musical diversity of the other 3).
Cheers brother! Great list and topic though! Keep up the great work and analysis!
1. Master
2. Ride
3.justice
4. Killem all
5. Black
And the rest are kinda ho hum with a couple ok songs..
Judging by your shirt I wouldn't mind a Supertramp ranking.
Bloody well right... :-)
I don’t understand why everyone likes Load more than Reload? Reload is a way better album. King Nothing is the only song I like on Load.
Both Load and Death Magnetic are miles better than the new record, which has no ideas, no dynamics, no editing and almost no actual songs.
I've always thought Lulu was a Lou Lou joke, a final middle finger to his critics, and Metallica were not in on it.
Lulu is a pretty good Lou Reed album.
awesoooome
Metallica, while one of my favourite bands, totally lost thier way after MOP. Everything after that was either the sound of a band falling falling apart, looking for a new identity, trying to find thier former identity after going on an ill advised soul search, or trying to relive past glories. Every time they release a new record I hope that it's going to be a coherent collection of songs, but what we get is a few interesting half realised ideas, tainted by the inevitable self pitying whine of James unpacking his experiences in rehab. It's telling that your list, along with everybody elses, has thier first three records as the top three.
Watching thier glacially slow slide into absurdity and incoherence has been a thousand times more entertaining than listening to thier music since 1987.
Lulu isn’t a Metallica album. It’s a Lou Reed album
Load is top 5 easy.
The lost me when they released The Black Album. Bob Rock killed their NWOBHM spirit, and although Hardwired and 72 Seasons are decent albums, i don't think Metallica has ever been the same since.
DRI 👍
Same here...
Lulu sux, St. Anger sux, I think load and reload would be good if it was one album with the stronger songs from both called Loaded. The rest of the albums are good.
Loaded for me would look like this:
1. "Ain't My Bitch"
2. "2 X 4"
3. "The House Jack Built"
4. "Until It Sleeps"
5. "Fuel"
6. "Better Than You"
7. "Prince Charming"
8. "Bleeding Me"
9. "Poor Twisted Me"
10. "Wasting My Hate"
11. "Mama Said"
12. "Thorn Within"
13. "Ronnie"
14. "The Outlaw Torn"
15. "Low man's Lyric"
16. "Fixxxer"
Probably a bit too long, but I would miss some of the songs that would get ommited. So its good that they have full Load and Reload, doen't work for rankings but I don't care.
We all know that first 4 or 5 albums are the best
Kill em all is my favorite and ride the lightning is close second.
Sent Anger
I may be the only person who likes St Anger. Good video.
Fuel and ReFuel? sounds better than Load and ReLoad
Instead of 'judicially pruning' his drum banging, I get the feeling that wee Lars throws a strop till, on almost every Metallica track, his thumping is all you can hear. I like Metallica's first 5 albums, but hate Ulrich's horrible drumming.
Totally agree on number 1 and 2. Hardwired is probably my favourite after black album.
