Transcript: How many countries are there in Southeast Asia? Well, there are 11 of them! We've got Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar (which used to be called Burma), Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, East Timor, and Brunei Darussalam.
Southeast Asia is home to approximately 675 million people, which makes up about 8.5% of the world's population.
Now, let's talk about some interesting facts about a few of these countries:
Indonesia holds the title of being the largest and most populated country in Southeast Asia.
On the flip side, Brunei Darussalam is the smallest in terms of population. It's also the only absolute monarchy in the region.
As for East Timor, it's the newest addition to the Southeast Asian family, the region had been a Portuguese colony up until 1975 and was under Indonesian sovereignty from 1976 to 1999, and unfortunately, it's also not so well economically.

Some separatist movement then happened, and boom Timor Leste is born. Their oil obviously got controlled by Australia. And sadly their literacy rate now drops hard.

I think the best trivia would be is that the PH is the largest Christian country in Asia while Indonesia is the largest Muslim country, and yet the two are best friends. The world should learn from their example. 🇵🇭🇮🇩

Australia strongly supports Timor Leste's independence, if a war occurs it will be very easy to place soldiers and war equipment there as the front line (without Indonesian approval)

Off topic, but I've wondered about why the West and East have a group of scattered islands at the equator. That's SEA and the Caribbeans essentially.
Just curious, have the Caribbean nations made any attempts at coming up with a regional bloc like ASEAN?

Hey, thanks for this brief overview! I'm no expert on geography, yet I remember seeing maps where island chains above Australia were labeled, "Melanesia," and, "Micronesia," and I learned that the Polynesians from this area also settled in Hawaii - if I rightly recall.
We know about the empires like China and India, and we know about the Koreas, Japan, and the Philippines because of our interactions with them. Beyond Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, I did know Thailand ( formerly Siam) and Burma (now Myannmar) were in the region - but I didn't know where all the puzzle pieces fit.
So, this overview of the current 11 nations of Southeast Asia was an eye-opener for me. Thank you!

We (Maritime) SE Asians took pride in our rich culture and history that we shared accross our own borders as far as the bloodline of Austronesians stretches, infamously the first sea farrers that wondered far to the pacific Islands, along with considerably being the most friendly people you can find in this planet and the authentic culinaries developed by our skilled SEA people, not to discredit on our Mainland SEA brothers or anything of course, as they too have a fair share of majestic cultures and food that the world loves. South East Asia itself is just a never-ending wonder of this beautiful planet✨....peace~!

Nah, it's hot but not as hot as the middle east, the heat is still tolerable, usually only around 29°-37° C, but last year was different because of el nino, some region reached 40+°C, yes I live in the region so I knew it all

The heat in SEA is worst than ME because of high humidity. Heat wave in ME is dry even the average temperature is above 40, it is still tolerable unlike in SEA where even the average temperature is lower but it feels like 5-10 degrees higher due to moisture in the air.
@@kaidanalenko5222 Yeah, i'm living in Vietnam so i know what you are saying. I know that ME is hotter, but SEA weather makes you sweats a lot because of high moisture, which was so annoying to me. Mosquitoes are also a thing too.

It's better to stay humble, I don't think we're the best, as a vietnamese(I born and live in Canada but love my country, grandpa fought against US). I wish to just finish my studies and live in Vietnam.
We're definitely not the best economically and in terms of power sadly. But the most important is to live in peace and be happy without restricting others from reaching the same goal.

Thai culture was originally from Cambodia. Thailand gained their independence from The Khmer Empire in the 12th century after being ruled over by Cambodia for hundreds of years. Cambodia was a French protectorate, but even then nothing of French culture took over. Cambodian culture still preserves and goes on strong today. You will see many Cambodian cultures in Thailand from traditional clothes, martial arts, and culture. Thailand even built a copy of Cambodia Angkor Wat.

I remember around year 2008 ish, my local news announcing about Mongolia interested to join ASEAN organization, because that day I was still little and dunno where is Mongolia, so I just assume they are part of SEA nation. but when I grow up I realized Mongolia isn't SEA county at all and located far away between Russia and China. I mean why they want to join ASEAN in first place if they know ASEAN is only exclusive for SEA country.
They really need that sea access. 😭
