I love your tip at 14:14 about walking out the neck measurement before attaching the collar to the shirt, to figure out the seam allowance. I am learning to make shirts like this, and it took me three tries before I realized I could do that. Now I intentionally leave a little extra seam allowance around the neck when I draft the pattern for the front panels and the yoke. It makes a huge difference in how the ends of the collar line up with the front of the shirt. This is the first time I've seen someone explain it on UA-cam. Your videos have great tips that are useful and non-obvious. Plus, you explain everything really well.
I can’t express how much love and safety for me is in videos that go "I do this, then I usually do that" instead of the patronizing "do this step, then you have to do that step". The only other creators that come to mind that do this are NileRed and Cody’sLab - I always wished I knew more, and today I found this channel 💛
I like your choice to use solid pink fabric for your sample with the blue floral ironing board cover. It makes a nice contrast for the shot. That's good video production.

Holy moly, I can’t thank you enough for this. I need to understand the *why* of a thing before it sticks in my head. I’ve watched what has to be at least a dozen videos on how to draft a collar by now and not a single one of them explained WHY anything was being done. It’s all just been endless lines and seemingly random numbers but they’re so aggressively commanding about it all, like if you don’t use those mysterious numbers, some authority will come and take you away. I was beginning to wonder if the numbers had been revealed to an ancient, sacred, caste of tailors all sworn to secrecy lest plagues be released upon the earth. You are the first person who explained what I’m looking at and how to alter the bits to suit my own needs. What a relief!!
Love this so much! I have a bunch of 70s shirt patterns that fit well but have the largest collar points you've ever seen. 😂 I've been trying to redraft them forever, but never to my satisfaction. Now I have a great guide to try again. Thank you!

i always have a tough time at the last sewing part you showed: on the final folding and stich of the base collar. i leave an extra seam allowence so the folded seam - on the inside of the garment- doesn't escape when sewing. the result is a ended base collar but not that neat, because that added allowence sometimes gets away (leaving triangles extra fabric on the sides) . i -also - always watch your videos. they're very helpful ❤ thanks!! greetings from argentina, country where isabel sarli comes from :)

With this approach to sewing the collar I really like that the interfacing is there as a guide for where to sew. Do you have any tips on how to cut the interfacing (or fabric in general) so that the shape is precise? I’m finding it hard to cut straight lines as the fabric shifts around. Thanks!
Easier to sew the collar in first. You can always catch the collar seam with the lining afterwards. You can sew the collar in with the lining in one shot but you have to line all the fabric up perfect.
Thanks for this one. I haven't made a shirt with a flappy down collar yet (though I'm starting to think I've mastered facings) but it's defnitely something that might happen. I used to be quite happy in a 14" neck men's shirt but age has decided to give me more volume up front than fits well into that size men's shirt anymore and women's clothing is garbage, so this is good to know if I ever want a shirt that actually FITS me. And thanks for showing the little pointy collar stays and how they can be made from something in the recycle bin... I'm sure my first few will look like hot garbage but that's ok as long as the're comfy. And I had ice cream for lunch. I'm an adult, I can do what I want.
Excellent video as usual! Curious about the interfacing. What are your thoughts on the sew-in type of interfacing? Have you ever used it. Just curious because I don't fully understand if there are sewing advantages or drawbacks to using sew-in interfacing versus fusible.
From what I've gathered, sew-in interfacing is good for adding structure in a draping environment. For lacy and textured fabrics where pressing it down isn't as feasible. It also reduced the bubbling that can happen after washing. I have only used it a little bit. It adds the challenge of an extra layer but manageable. There are more use cases but this is what I recall off the top of my head.

I'm glad to hear it. Maybe try using a cutting wheel. Also, drawing it out on the interfacing helps.
On a coat/jacket do I first sew in the collar or the lining?

I think you would fit more into the athletic category. Mature means older men who are more "squared up" and more likely to have bellies.
