As a Filipino Canadian, I can say that the ONLY time I ever hear about the concept of Filipinos as Pacific Islanders is when I watch videos with Filipino Americans. I wonder if that debate is only exclusive in the US. Because we identify as Asians here in Canada.
American Pop Culture with the types of Moana and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson have added the brains of new generation Fil-Ams who look up to these personas as their ethnic role models. Never and not even once have primary to tertiary education in the Philippines have labelled Filipinos as Pacific Islanders but as ASIANS. But who are we to dispute the Fil-Ams if they wish to be identified as Pacific Islanders as if that's their fantasy then let them believe that as long as they don't include genuine homegrown Pinoys in their confusion.
So let them live their own fantasies. They after all are no longer fully indictrinated in our history and Culture but by a foreign one. We on the otherhand whom were born and bred in our beloved motherland knows exactly what facts and truths are and not some displaced Pinoy descents living thousands of miles away being born and bred in a foreign Land clueless about their true heritage and history. But what exactly is an American but an amalgation of displaced foreigners on Native Anerinduan Land. Their Culture and history is but just recent and manufactured compared to ours.
@@robertoiiigianzon1623 Well, some Filipino-Americans weren't just satisfied by identifying as Pacific Islanders but they also had the gall to coin the terms Filipinx and Pinxy and put those in Dictionary.com. They should've described the terms specific to the 'Filipino diaspora in the United States of America or Americans of Filipino descent' but they really had to include the 'natives or inhabitants of the Philippines'. I understand the Filipino diaspora's need for such terms but those terms are not relevant to the natives. I just checked and apparently the said dictionary changed their previous definitions to 'people of Philippine origin or descent, especially those living in the United States'. Finally, that digital dictionary heard the natives' concerns and revised their definitions which are now better suited to the diaspora. And speaking of Disney's Moana, I'm glad that Southeast Asians are going to have a representation in the form of Raya and the Last Dragon. Maybe the diaspora will get to embrace that they're Asians. Also, I feel like this video didn't really address the title or question. Since he's in the land of Uncle Sam whilst advocating Philippine history, I'm wondering if he considers himself Asian or Pacific Islander or both...
izzylovesjams Their location is in Asia, but not their roots. The Spanish came and raped, or repopulated with, the Austronesians inhabiting the islands. Creating Filipinos. The Spanish conquered and ruled the Philippines for 300 years. And the Spanish named the Philippines after their King, Philips II. There’s a lot of Spanish in the language and a lot of Filipinos have Spanish last names. After the 300 year reign in the Philippines, the Spanish colonization fell to rebellion or something, I honestly don’t know, America occupied the Philippines. During this, the Americans attempted to erase a lot of Spanish influences from the Filipino culture. They did a great job, but the Spanish aspects will always be in the language and in the names. Also, in dancing because a lot of Filipinos naturally can dance and move smoothly to music. But I digress. Spanish repopulated with Austronesians, creating Filipinos.
+Ryan Lajara no offense to the Filipinos but yeah Filipinos should start accepting their ethnicity and be proud to themselves what is their real race. It's really confusing brown people as Asians. Whatever it is PACIFIC ISLANDER or AUSTRONESIAN, every people in the world should know where they belong. Well there's a two meaning of a word Asians The first meaning is Asians is the people who lived in the Asian Continent The second meaning is Asians as a race or ethnicity, majority in Chinese, Korean and Japanese East Asian region.
AALWAYS LUCKY Racism Alert! So what we have the lowest I.Q ever. I.Q alone is not enough to tell your success and race... You just don't know what you are saying. Because the promoter of the Pacific Island Festival Gathering lost his girlfriend to a Filipino dude, and he’s still heartbroken till this day. That pussy never invited us over like a bitch!
Filipinos are strictly Asians - Southeast Asian to be exact, not Pacific Islanders. Yes we are under one group of people as Austronesians but so are the ones in Madagascar and yet they are still referred to as Africans simply due to its close proximity with Africa. Calling Filipinos as Pacific Islanders is grossly inaccurate and misleading considering that we were not historically and culturally isolated from ALL of Asia (China, India, SE Asia) evidenced by influences to our languages, food, habits and culture.

Yes thank you! I’m sick of tired of hearing of Labeling logic of being called “Pacific Islanders” in fact back in history the U.S only considered East Asian to be (Asian) and they called Filipinos Pacific Islanders because they did not recognize as the other Asian culture. In fact Philippines was influenced by China before the Spaniards and in fact the country in Oceana was not influenced by China so that’s how America got themselves confused.

If you're going to look at the mythology, Philippine is far more closer to Asia... The Tikbalang Aswang, they came from Indian Influence (no the Spaniards did not invent it, they just exploited it as one of the many ways to control us, even the Kapre is not of Spanish Origin) even the Bakunawa have similiarities to Chinese myth... And don't even get me started with the Mananaggal and their head removing counsins from Malaysia and Indonesia. The Epic Ibalon and Biag ni Lam ang are Ramayana inspired epics from india heck even the Baybayin have sanskrit origins in it if you're going to study. The more you go deeper ob our mythos the more you understand the connection we have with our Asian neighbors. And that's just the myth part
@Mandrake Dawgski Mexican, American influences more, only chinese food like pancit noodles, chow king, lumpia are chinese influence because of the chinese immigrated to the Philippines.
@Mandrake Dawgski Very true, they don't do enough research, as I've mentioned here in my post, it all began in the early 60's when the chinese students in Berkley protested they were being mistreated something like that so they asked the filipino students to help and asked them to join them and so the filipinos became Asian all of a sudden. Of course filipinos are Pacific islanders.
There is nothing wrong with being Asian, and Filipinos should not be embarrassed about their Southeast Asian heritage and identity, let alone their rich and ancestral Asian culture. Despite adopting Spanish surnames, being forced to convert to Catholicism, and incorporating Castilian words into their native languages, Filipinos are of Asian origin, culture, and genetics. On the other hand, the term "Spanish" refers to Spain, and true Latins are the native people of the Italian region of Lazio.
Never have i ever heard of the term “pacific islanders” to describe us Filipinos. It’s not written in our Philippine history textbooks. Although our country is located amongst the Pacific ocean and we have over 7,100 islands, which makes sense. So does that make us both Asians and Pacific Islanders? Just as those who live in Texas, USA are considered as both “Texans” and “North Americans”
Darryl G The number of islands we have in the Philippines changes hourly because of high tides and low tides. So yep, sometimes we have over 7,100 and sometimes about 7,600 on the average.
@Distant Echoes so what about your islands i know filipino pride is kinda annoying especially with those people generalise a lot, example filipinos are the best blah blah but dude come on u got 3ggered to the number of islands? hahahha lol
I can't find my last comment - but just to teach my fellow Filipinos: You are Asian. You don't hear Japan calling themselves Pacific Islanders. You also don't hear Malaysians (which is basically our predominant race) calling themselves Pacific Islanders. Please know your identity. You are Asian.
asian is not a ethnic term but a geografical one, eachone have their ethicity in the gaogarical area in asia, you have to learn more history about the meaning of pacific islanders, and why filipinos really fits this term. and also any one can consider themselfs as they want
our race is not predominantly from Malaysia infact the Early Austronesian Filipinos are also populated significant most part of malaysia that the reason why we look alike because our ancestors also populated the country of Malaysia. But I can't deny that the people from Malaysia and Indonesia also settled our country but the Austronesian peoples from East Asia ( Taiwan and China) was populated the Philippines and when the Austronesian from the North already reaching all over the Philippines and indeed they populated the country. The Early Austronesian Filipino also reaching most of Indonesia and Malaysia that the reason why we Filipinos, Malaysia and Indonesian Sharing same physical Appearance because of our Austronesian roots. Filipinos are predominantly Austronesian race that camed from taiwan that originated in China.
Filipinos are Asians. End of story. Pacific Islanders have a few things in common, but other than that, Filipinos are Asians. They live a more “Asian” lifestyle I would say. I like to think as Filipinos as very distant cousins. We related but like *waaaaaaay* back.
Cube Thinker Everything is a blanket term. Who is really Micronesian? Who is really Polynesian? Where do we draw the line? What makes Kiribati Micronesian and not Polynesian? There’s no good way of telling who goes where. You just have to accept what the world sees you as. If the world were to see Micronesians as Asians, then i guess I’m Asian. People always group Pacific Islanders with Asians anyways. But That’s just how the world in general groups the different peoples on this earth. And I guess people see Filipinos as more culturally similar to what is stereotyped as “Asian”. And I’m not gonna speak about the Syrians because I don’t know anything about them. The reason why I’m saying Filipinos are asian is because the island way of life is not there any more. Right now, Filipino culture is more Asian. Today. As of now. Whether you want to admit it or not. Micronesians are still living the island way, just a modern version of it. The culture is Pacific Islander. The way in which they live/are is what the world sees as “Pacific Islander”. Therefore Micronesians are Pacific Islander by the world’s standards. I don’t know what’s so hard for you to understand. The Philippines has a long history with China. So in regards to your thought process does that make Filipinos Chinese? No. They are more Asian than Pacific Islander. Historically they were just like their Pacific Islander cousins but with migration, people mixing, and centuries of Spanish rule, the island way of living is not there. And in regards to my thought process of Micronesians being Filipino, the answer is no. Micronesians aren’t like the Filipinos today. The people who are called Micronesians today left before influence from China came to the Philippines. One example: Look at the food. Where did lumpia come from? Siopao? Pancit? A lot of Pacific Islanders are still in the taro patches and pounding breadfruit just like their ancestors. The cultures are different. That’s where people draw the line. That’s what’s “accepted by the world”. Try arguing with the world.
Cube Thinker I read all of it. And I apologize. I replied out of frustration also. But I hear what you’re saying about the Chamorros. It’s sad to say but they lost their original culture because of centuries of Spanish rule. So I hope they aren’t looking down on you Filipinos. They have a lot in common with Filipinos and the other Micronesians, but most of the time the Pacific Islanders bash on them because it seems like what they claim to be their “traditional” dances look Polynesian when it should look more related to Micronesian or even Filipino. Also... even though my people (Chuukese) are Micronesian like them, they look down on us too. They always tell us to go back to our islands. Yes I agree. The bad ones need to go back and stay over there, but when they say Chuukese in general, it’s just ignorant. And I think it’s sad that the “island culture” is looked down over there. They know how to live off the land. It’s one of the things they still have from the ancestors. When they are stranded somewhere they’ll know how to survive. And I see what you said about Spanish rule destroyed filipino culture. It’s the same for us with the little time that the Japanese occupied our islands. We have a lot of words that come from Japanese. The original way we dressed stopped because of them. No tattooing, no coconut shell earrings, no wooden combs, no dog teeth necklaces. lol let me get off that. Other than that I think it’s sad that the world separates us. It’s the world we live in.
TheCrazyKid1381 I know what a Filipino looks like. I know the difference between East Asians and Filipinos. I know that Filipinos are related to Pacific Islanders being that they are all Austronesian. Shxt im Micronesian. The Philippines is not too far from Micronesia. There’s a lot of Filipinos living/working/going to school in Micronesia especially in Guam. We don’t look too different from Filipinos. But I will tell you this. When people ask me what my ethnicity is I always have them guess because I’m curious to see what they think i am. People don’t really know Micronesians so whenever they guess I always get either Filipino or just Asian. And I’m saying “always” because I’ve never gotten anything else. This is how people sees Filipinos. I’m sorry if I’ve offended you.

Pacific Islanders are Micronesia, Polynesia, Melanesia, and Oceania. The only relation of Filipinos to Pacific islanders is with Philippines at the farthest End or Edge of Asia bordering to Pacific ocean, coz Filipinos are Austronesian, the ancient seafarers some 5,000 years ago. So historically & technically, Filipinos are the ancient ancestors of Pacific islanders, also of Southeast Asia, of pre-Han Southern China & of some in East coast India, the Kalinga tribes that Ashoka destroyed around 200 Bc.
The Philippines is at a crossroads in the Pacific, and Filipinos are therefore a very genetically diverse group of people. Genetic studies have indicated that most ancient bloodlines (Negrito groups) probably came from Oceania and Australia about 47,000 years ago! There is more recent evidence that there is a genetic link to India that has not been observed in other Southeast Asian groups. However, the Philippines was most likely populated mostly via Austronesian expansion dating back about 5 000 years ago. This group could include what is considered Pacific Islanders like Hawaii, Fiji, Guam, etc. More recently of course, there are connections to China, Arabia, Spain, U.S., etc. I think Kirby is basically correct in asserting that classifying Filipinos as Pacific Islanders is quite a stretch both geographically and genetically. Certainly, Filipinos are far more similar to Asians culturally. BUT what does it really matter? Filipinos are first and foremost Filipinos - a richly diverse and unique culture unlike any other! I don't know why some people insist upon falling within a specific ethnic or cultural identity. We are what we are! More and more that means we are a mixture of many different races and cultures. You don't have to be one or the other, you can just be yourself!
Yes, the Philippines is a crossroad in the Pacific. therefore, the people consist of a very genetically diverse group. Geographically, million years ago the Philippines was very much part of the Pacific, near the Marianas and Guam islands hence it was previously part of the Polynesian-island grouping. However, being located near the Pacific divide, the shifting tectonic plates is pushing the Philippines nearer and nearer to the Asian mainland, hence, its present geographic location near Asia.
Both negrito filipinos and austronesian filipinos originate from asia. But, we(mainly austronesian filipinos) are more different ethnically and genetically similar to asians. Even though the islands were said to be polynesian homeland, we have grown more different over the many years. It's like africans, we all come from africa and as we traveled out the continent we have slight changes. THese changes define what is now the different human races. SO like in the philippines, polynesians moved out of the islands but they grew different than the natives of the philippines. THose polynesians and along other pacific islander groups made a more different, beatiful, and unique culture, etc. from Asia and what is now the PHilippines. These groups make up what is now called the pacific islanders. We are all part of the human race but, we have different genetics and culture and that what makes us different, that makes africans and asians different, and that what makes the pacific islanders different from filipinos.
I watched the videos of the God culture and based to their researched that some of our bloodline came from the Hebrews. If you know the hanging coffins of sagada that is one of the Hebrews culture.
@@mr.b2216 But the "most" of Filipinos you see in the Philippines in modern times are not an original people! They are a new mixture of people because of the raping of the original people the Negritos! (Black people); from Spain, England, America, China, and Japan. Then they also inter married.
Hey thanks for this, as someone who is trying to understand this question this video is really helpful! Is there any resources regarding the Philippines being called PI by the US? I havent heard that before lol
Our base culture as filipinos is Austronesian culture. No matter which ethnic group you pick in the Philippines, the most dominant feature is austronesian culture. The arrival of hindu-buddhist, islamic, chinese, Spanish Mexican, and Anglo-American culure just added another layer in the pre-existing culture of the inhabitants of the islands. Learned this from my professor in UP
Austronesian is a term was invented to describe a language group...not a culture. I wish people would stop misusing this term. Filipino culture is most similar to other Southeast Asians.
@@jakeplummer2477 "Austronesian" by itself refers to a language group. "Austronesian speaking people" or "Austronesian people" refers to the diverse group of genetically related people who speak those languages. They all share an ancestral group of people who spoke an original form of the language which further diversified because of migration and becoming culturally distinct from each other. Same with other language families and other groups of people.
Though i personally believe that we are asian due to history culture etc etc everything and i personally consider myself asian, we are genetically very close to pacific islanders. Along with malaysians, indonesians, and native taiwan peoples, we fall under austronesian.
King Uce77 The correct name is AETA not "Negritos". We Aeta are looking to remove that antiquated racist label. And yes Aeta were originally from Austronesia.
The astronesians is said to come from Taiwan. However, the Han people from China displaced much of the natives, they still exist today as minorities. However, there seems to be a later reversed migration from the south to the north from Malaysia and Indonesia as we share some linguistics similarities.
Being displaced especially those new Gen born and bred in the U.S.A makes them confused of their real identity. They look up to Hollywood Pacific Islanders characters as their role models and heroes thus adding to their addled interpretation as to their true origin.

Filipinos in or living in the Philippines, and who are still in the Philippine, like me, rarely got confused with our identity. We always refer to ourselves as Asians and not as Pacific Islanders. Our country is geographically, culturally, historically, geologically, ethnically, politically, and linguistically more tied with our Asian neighbors or at least our close Southeast Asian neighbors. Our country is not a part of Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia regions or areas to be a part of the Pacific Islands or Oceania super region. Here is a question for you Filipinos. As a Polynesian myself, a lot of us Polynesians and other Pacific Islanders I've talked to, see Filipino Americans that claim to be Pacific Islanders as people who love our culture and wishes it were their own. We see them as people who hate themselves and their own culture so much that even though the people who these Filipino Americans want to associate with (Polynesians) try to educate them, they harden their brain and refuse to listen to the truth even though the facts are clear. But here is the question, why? What is so bad about being Filipino that make these Filipino Americans try to be something they are not? Is all this due to Filipino Americans wanting to avoid negative Asian stereotypes?
This mostly happens with Filipino Americans. First and foremost was because of colonialism. Then, to avoid yes, Asian stereotypes. And probably to elevate their status. Because deny it as much as we want, race is still a big thing in the US. One time, I got in a heated argument with a bunch of them. And believe me, as a Filipino who live my whole life in the Philippines it's so frustrating.

Austronesians are, by genetics, an East Asian race group. Our ancestors came from Southeast China and Taiwan and were and are ethnic siblings to other Asian ethnic groups such as Thais and Lao (Tai-Kadai in southern and southwestern China), Mon-Khmer of Cambodia and Kinh of Northern Vietnam (Chams are part of the Austronesian ethnic group). According to a number of anthropologists, we are referred to as “Sundadont Mongoloids” or “Southern Mongoloids”. And yes, that means northeast Asians such as the Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese are our ethnic cousins. We are closely related to them and share common prehistoric ancestry.

The Philippines is presently located in Asia, but previously (million years ago) it was part of the Pacific ocean island group. The movement of the tectonic plates and the Pacific ocean divide have pushed the Philippines away from its Pacific island grouping and is coming nearer and nearer to Asia. The Philippines is a Spanish colony for 350+ years and have a facial and cultural affinity with Mexico and neighboring south American countries. Therefore by present location, the Filipinos are rightfully considered as Asians, but their previous location in the Pacific also bestows them to be called Polynesian/Pacific-islanders and lastly their Hispanic history rightfully entitles them to be called Latinos of Asia.
Xavier Read Filipinos are ethinically Austronesians(Aeta) and Malaysian. The whole "Pacific Islander" label is just misinformation from people who can't read a map or don't know Filipino history.
Edgar Arreza No we are not "Hispanics of Asia". Yes we were colonized by Spain but that does not mean EVERY Filipino has a Spanish ancestor. A Spanish last name does not necessarily mean you have a Spanish ancestor, those were slave names that were forced onto the Filipinos. There are several different ethnic groups of the Filipinos and many of them don't have Spanish culture at all.
Interesting video, but it fails to address the underlying categories in question. Which are geographic (Asia), and racial (Asian/Pacific Islander). Asia is a very broad geographic category devised from a Eurocentric tradition of cartography. The etymological origins of Asia is simply east (more specifically towards the direction of sunrise). East of what? Well Europe. This is very broad and clearly biased. Attempts are made to divide the Asia into: Central Asia, South Asia, East Asia and South East Asia. Which does work to a degree. Then there is the racial category; which is not very precise either. Some how embracing peoples from Turkmenistan to Japan.
I agree with you. It does fail to address the underlying categories in question. Yes, geographically it's Asia. Race, in my opinion it's Malay (like the Malay race). As far as ethnicity is concerned, it's Pacific Islander (no explanation necessary). I would like to hear your opinion on this, Mr. Lobos. Because only you have dissected this topic intelligently.

In 1898 Spanish was a very popular mode of communication. Many Katipuneros hated the language of the enemy, introduction of English and opening debut of the Philippines to the world encouraged the use of English, Spanish derived "Creole" resulted in Chavacanos, i.e. if mixed with Visaya and Spanish became Chavacano Zamboanga and if mixed with Tagalog, Cavacano Cavite. The later is getting rare.

@@piosian4914 Paraiso de Zambo About Zamboanga > History Many Filipino historians have neglected the importance of one's provinces and town here in the Philippines . They don't give enough concentration on the other places that gives us the fact that those occurrence lead to many different aspects of our Philippine history. This article will take you back in time and experience how Zamboanga's old days is rich and meaningful In the late 12th or early 13th century, Zamboanga was founded. Subanens were the early people of Zamboanga. They were of Malay origin who came at about 6,000 to 2,500 years ago. Subanen people name it "Sung Lupa" which means "pointed land" and they called Pasonanca "Nawan" meaning "future" where they establish. They also have a leader. A Subano leader is like a Barangay Captain nowadays. His leadership is in terms of the number of families residing under his dominion. Zamboanga City was also a site of the Spanish settlement and garrison on La Caldera which is now called Barrio Recodo in 1969. This place also served as a military outpost, to protect the area from foreign invaders and Moro pirates. Upon the consent of King Philip IV, Zamboanga became the main headquarters of the Spaniards in June 23,1635 and the Spanish officialy founded the city . The Zamboanga fortress which is known as Fort Pilar were approved to build by a governor general from Spain to forestall enemies in Mindanao like Moro Pirates and other foreign invaders. The name "Zamboanga" provides an interesting historical background. This was called "Jambangan" by the early Malay settlers which means Land of Flowers. The Samals and Badjaos also came here with their feil vintas and they were confused with the word "Jambangan" with "Samboangan" which came from the word "Sabuan ", the wooden pole used to help push their Vintas in Shallow watersor to tie them for anchorqage purposes. The word "Samboangan" was found difficult to pronounce by Spaniards. So, this was preferably called "Zamboanga". This place was also considered as the center of barter trading among Chinese, Malays and the native Tausugs, Samals, Subanens and the Badjaos as early as 13th and 14th centuries. The introduction of Islam was lead by Mukdum,Rayah Baginda and Abu-Bakr. They are an Arab missionaries and teaches of Sulu reached the shore of Sulu at about 1480 to 1490.The one who introduced Islam in Cotabato was Sherif Kabungsuan and it begun to spread through Mindanao including Zamboanga . There were new culture ,some natives converted to Islamism while others retreated to mountains and remain pagans. The introduction of Christianity begun when Spaniard built their first fort in La Caldera (presently Recodo). At first it was a wooden palisade but later reconstructed with stone in 1593. The first conversion of Christianity could have taken place here among the Sama-Lutaos and the Subanen who were staying with the vicinity of the Spanish settlement.

Hi Kirby! I've been doing research on this topic, and I am trying to find a written source that discusses how the U.S. reclassified Filipinos as PI, as a result of the Chinese Exclusion Act. Do you know where I can find this? Thanks for all that you do!
Asian is such an old term and the Western Asians really have very little in common with Eastern Asians :/ There's really no reason why we can differentiate Asians more :/ Like so: Pacific Asians: This includes Any Asian countries east of Myanmar and China (with China included). These countries have the highest Chinese Cultural Influence. Hindustani Asians: This includes the countries of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan. These countries have the highest Indian cultural influence. Turkic Asians: These include the Stans countries, the Caucus countries and Turkey. These countries have the highest turkic influence as well as Russian influences. Arabic Asians: These countries are countries in the Arab peninsula. These have the highest Arab cultural influences. Of course this type of categorising is deeply controversial (Especially when I put India and Pakistan on the same group) but that is roughly divinded culturally and linguisticly. The problem would be Afghanistan which might be more closer to Hindustani Asians than Turkic Asian countries. Myanmar might also me closer to Hindustani Asians as well than Pacific Asians. Mongolia is also Turkic but it has a lot of Chinese influence so I categorised it as Pacific Asian but I might be wrong. Lastly, I don't know where to fit Iran since they definately do not want to be grouped in the same group as Saudi Arabia. Israel is also pretty tricky overall.
Guess what country hosted the Southeast Asian Games? Philippines! Good job! Now guess what country did not get invited to the Pacific Games? Right again! The Philippines! Now here's the last question. Why? Ding ding ding! Correct because Filipinos are Asian, not Pacific islanders! Perfectly said, great job!
Some pinoys abroad can't say they're asian and considers themselves pacific islanders i think is because a it causes confusion coz if someone said asian automatically some would think of chinese or east asian descent. Haha. Well, since there's multiple classifications of asians like east, central, middle east, let's just call ourselves Southeast Asians to be more specific.
that was perfect. Finally a great answer that I can tell to people who would ask me. I was born and raised til 12 in the Philippines. I thought I was Asian then. I actually became racially confused when I came to the US cause a lot of people were saying to me things like "but you're not really asian... you're a pacific islander.... you're something else..." add to that, a lot of applications, even government ones; when it came to filling out your "country of birth," Philippines isn't under the "Asia" list. instead, I'd find it under pacific islands. so it has been so confusing.
July Ski when 2nd world war philippines are occupied by americans .. so they called philippines island in the pacific .. but after ww2 philippines cliamed freedom .. so its belong to asia In other words these idiots proudly claimed pacific islanders are fooled by americans and only exist in america 😂😂😂😂
Anybody who is not Hawaiian should not be calling themselves Hawaiian. If you’re not of native Hawaiian decent, but you were born on Hawaii, you’re still not Hawaiian. It’s not like the other states. Because Hawaiian is it’s own ethnicity. It’s own language. If you’re from Texas, you can call yourself Texan because Texan is not a ethnicity/language. It’s not the same as being Hawaiian. If you’re not of Hawaiian decent but you were born in Hawaii, you’d just say “I’m from Hawaii/I was born in Hawaii” not “I’m Hawaiian”. With that being said. Hawaii is Pacific Islander.
Filipinos are Asian. Consider that the Philippine archipelago is located at the eastern edge of Asia even though the country is located at the western edge of the Pacific Ocean. The Filipino people are ethnically connected to the other Malay, Taiwanese, and Indochinese peoples than to the various island nations scattered across the Pacific Ocean.
From California, identify as Asian , but they throw us under one umbrella in the states. From API awards to celebrations, to media categories... don’t mind, love my Polynesian folks!
if you look at our prespanish history the original settlers of the maharlika islands are pacific islanders. contrary to popular belief Magelan did not discover the philippines, infact maharlikan has been settled in these island for hundreds of year.
There is some link between filipinos and pacific islanders but we are mainly asian both now and prehispanic periods. We were first inhabited by negritos but filipinos are different from pacific islanders. Read this for some info:reappropriate.co/2017/05/dear-asian-americans-stop-erasing-pacific-islanders/
I grew up in Hawaii, and I can tell you it is very easy to recognize whos Asian and whos pacific islander, Hawaii is such a melting pot that you can spot certain ethnicities, especially Asians and whites, and let me tell you filipinos are the only ones that get mixed up, if you're Japanese, you never get questioned for another race other than Chinese or korean, you're Thai you never get mixed up with any other race but lao or vietnamese, but when you're Filipino you often get mixed and confused for Hawaiian, Micronesian, or Mexican lmfao, I think the problem with the confusion is that a lot of filipinos and people who never grew up with a a large community of pacific islanders or in the states, don't even know what a pacific islanders are nor do they kniw how they live, once they move to a place that is culturally mixed with almost every culture like Hawaii, they will realize how much more relatable they are to pacific islanders than Asians, thats just my opinion, So I think once you experience living with both Asians and pacific islanders you will know which one you identify yourself with more, Don't forget filipinos are island people,
As a Polynesians myself and as someone who was born and raised in Hawaii, I don't think Polynesian culture is more relatable. Hell if Filipino Americans knew their culture, they'd be more relatable with other Southeast Asians. Most of us Polynesians see Filipino Americans as what they are, Asians that wish they were us. You say don't forget Filipinos are island people? Technically, England is on an island so the English are island people too by definition if you look up the definition of the word "islander".
@@polyso5123 wtf are you even talking about lol, Island people, Im talking about more than 7,000 islands that are a at a considerably far distance from mainland, We are nothing like other Asians, other than rice, idk wtf youre talking about, Do you even know about igorots? Or kalinga?
@KOKO Martin are you kidding me, you're comparing islands that are right next to the mainland of Asia, thats totally different from 7,000 islands that considerably far from the mainland, and closer to open ocean, so yes island people, just look at put ancient people and tribes they are similar to pacific islanders than Asians, again where do you live? Have you ever lived side by side with mircronesians, chamarro's, marshallese, Tongans, Samoans,? Or do you just live with filipinos,
@@polyso5123 I have never been confused for a Japanese person, nor did I get confused for a Chinese, not even Vietnamese or Korean, but I get confused for Hawaiian, I get confused for being Micronesian, Marshallese and Mexican, again you have no idea what you're talking about people in Hawaii never mistaken filipinos for Asians, if anything they get surprised that some filipinos put asian on paperworks in school, because again growing up with almost every culture you see how different filipinos are from other Asians and are closely similar to pacific islanders, I have no problem with people calling me Asian, but there shouldn't be a problem with someone calling me pacific islander as well, and people who talk down on me for doing that is retarded
filipinos are both asians and pacific islander coz us filipinos have long ends in the eye which prooves we are asians and philippines IS IN THE PACIFIC so we are both😉😉✌️✌️
Japan is islands and so is Indonesia are they both as well? The line of the Pacific Ocean stops way before the Philippines, in which it turns into the Philippine Sea.
i dont know why some people are having a hard time understanding that Filipinos are literally, ethnically, racially, geographically Southeast Asians. im so sick and tired explaining this to people. A lot of people specially in tiktok are claiming that Filipinos are not Asians like wtf??!! I dont know if they are trolls or not but its really offensive. Filipinos are Asian! Not Pacific Islanders. I feel like people who are pushing the idea that Filipinos are Pacific Islander just wanted attention and just wanna gain popularity. Filipinos are very different from pacific Islanders. I always try my best to explain this to people in tiktok, i told them to watch videos here in UA-cam for a concrete explanation that FILIPINOS ARE ASIAN. No one in the Philippines claim that they are Pacific islanders, they are all aware that they are Asians and they are so proud of it. This whole thing was taught in grade school in the Philippines. I love every race but its really offensive for me the a lot of people are not proud of their roots. it's offensive to pretend to be someone you're not. If you put a Filipino, a Malaysian, and an Indonesian in a room, you will notice that they look very similar because they have same ancestry. They are originally Southeast Asian, some Thai look like Filipino too. Actually Southeast Asians have different skin tone in present time (light, dark, brown). For example, Southeast Asian Countries like Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, a lot of people there has dark/brown skin tone, we could say that's because the climate is tropical, humid, and very hot. Scientifically, they are originally dark thousands of years ago. These dark original people actually were the original people to reach and inhabit all of South East Asia. Though it didn’t go as high up as the northern half of Vietnam or Laos etc. These countries immediately under China are sometimes known as Indochina, it appears the original dark native people that came from Africa did inhabit most of the lower areas of Indochina, meaning most of Thailand, southern Vietnam etc. These dark original people fully inhabited all of the island South East Asia, meaning Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines etc. And yes, Filipinos were colonized by the Spaniards. we do have cultures that is similar to Spanish but our Southeast Asian Culture are strong too. Also, one thing that added to the confusion is because a lot of people in the Philippines has Spanish last name (due to colonization) but in reality the majority of Filipinos are full blooded SOUTHEAST ASIAN. WE SHOULD ALL LOVE AND RESPECT EACH OTHER!
I am a Filipino "Chosen Fine" we are one country and God loves us. We dont let any other nations define us and we should not listen to them. The more we talk about Pacific Islanders the more we get affected by their political agenda. We should embrace the fact that we have our own identity . We are the People of the Philippines the Tiger of Asia.. Roar!!!
*Asian Islanders!* Actually, we are a mix of cultural identity and always have been.. both the US and Philippines. The Spanish conquered the Philippines, US and Mexican Aztec Indians.., before the US ran them out. Kirby, you failed to acknowledge that the US ran the Spanish off to eventually give your islands back to you, but your Filipino islands were again saved from Japan by the US who fought a terrible war with many Americans killed... just so you could have your country back and independence. Mabuhay Republik Nung Pilipinos, sige na! *Bakit hindi Kuya, are we not brothers.*
King Uce77 it's not just because it's located in asia, is about the culture too Dummy, he's right, Philippines is 95% Asian, and if you live in the beaches, Most people there has Same culture as what Pacific islanders have
I would say filipinos are Pacific Islanders because before Ferdinard Magellan came to the Philippines, Philippines culture was similar to the polynesian culture.
lets say that we filipinos have a choice cause our philippine island is in asia and i consider myself as a asian pacific islander and let me strait u this chinese culture is far far away from our culture our history is in island and our original skin is dark and tan and if u hate it deal with it mate but dose it matter to u we all humans here

Pepe The Frog: we're more similar to Malays than Polynesian. Malays are Asian. We do have many similarities with Chinese but we are also have many different. Remember that Asian doesn't mean just China. Asians in general are very diverse, each having their own unique differences, especially the Philippines
Filipino-Americans have no clue about the existence of Malays,or other countries in Southeast Asia. It's easier for the Fil-ams who grew up in Hawaii to identity with Pacific Islanders, and not actual Filipinos from the Philippines who they will refer to as "FOBS".
Studies from the Philippines have also shown it's Taiwan that is the origin of the so called Malay group. Thus Taiwanese aborigines appear to be more "Austronesian/Malay"in physical features.
To be honest, I consider it as both. Although I'm fine with putting myself as "Asian Other" here in the UK I definitely see it as a mix of pacific cultures / asian. We Filipinos are well integrated with prehistoric cultures and colonisation. As a definition however - we are limited to only as Asians. I don't really see the problem. Did you know Ilocano is part of the Austronesian family? Now that's confusing if you say that Pacific Islanders have nothing to do with Philippines. Or Vice Versa. It's all the same - in a modernised world we just put these labels to identify ourselves but we have to realise that we're all just tied together in a knot somehow.
I am Filipino but none of my European or American friends says am Asian. They simply said we dont think you act like usual Asians do. Not on the physical appearance.
Ali Bata Spanish last names don’t have anything to do with Filipinos. It doesn’t mean that most Filipinos have Spanish blood. The Spanish government changed the Native Filipino last names to Spanish, which I think is annoying, because last names are a cultural identity.
We are genetically close to Pacific islanders because we are all Austronesians and so as Indonesians, Malaysians, and even people of Madagascar, so are people of Madagascar also Pacific Islanders because they are closer to Austronesian ancestors than that of its African neighbors? No. They are considered to be with Africa. So even though we are genetically Austronesians like Polynesians and Micronesians of the Pacific, and aside from we are also having aborigine tribes that are quite close to Melanesians and the aborigines of Australia, aside from we are living in islands to be grouped with Pacific "Islanders", we mostly consider ourselves as Asian geopolitically, geographically, and culturally, with also historical ties, biological fauna basis, being closer to previous Sundaland which is a part of Asia that is now under the seas. In fact people should not just be asking if we are Asians or Pacific Islanders, for we also have tribes here in our country close to aborigines of Australia and we also have citizens and culture much identified with Europe and Latin America. So the real question is "Are Filipinos Asians, Pacific Islanders, Aborigines, or more European or Latin American-like?" My personal answer is, we are Asians or we are on our own. Like we can identify with Asia, Pacific Islands, even with Australia (for some tribes) and with Europe or Latin America whenever we like and we choose to. We are on our own identity and let us be like that. Unique enough to be Asians, unique enough to be Pacific Islanders.
Getting so tired of these stupid debate it’s simple geography Philippines is literally in fucking Southeast ASIA and is part of the ASEAN there for Asian if you claim Philippines to be Pacific Islanders then you should also include japan,Taiwan and Indonesia too cause they are also islands in the pacific but I never hear them complain “OH WE’RE PACIFIC ISLANDERS” dafaq
We're Asian, period. If we're Pacific Islanders, then shouldn't Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Timor-Leste, Singapore & Brunei count as Pacific Islanders too? And besides, I have never heard of Philippines being described as Pacific Islanders (or alternative vocabulary: part of Oceania) until just months ago tbh :/ Also, to the people who think Asia is just China, Mongolia, Japan & the two Koreas: Indians (The South Asia ones not the native Americans), Siberians, Turks, Persians, even Arabs and Jews, aren't they also Asians?!!! And yes, I'm aware we have Austronesian roots, Tagalog language even proves that. But fun fact: Madagascar too has Austronesian roots. Now would you consider it part of Africa or a separate place/culture from Africa?
OO Asian or Pacific islander tayo, at ang kultura at religion at mga tradisyon ay galing sa Espanya at mexico.. Spanish is a part of identity of Filipino people
Southeast Asia are composed of the following countries: the Philippines, Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Filipinos are definitely ASIANS and I, being an Asian, have kinship feelings with all other Asians (not just the Southeast Asians), i.e., being proud that Asians are considered the model minority in other countries, and when Asians are discriminated or bullied, I feel the hurt in them. The ancestors of Filipinos are Malays (those from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, et al) and Filipino dialects have LOTS of similarities with Malay dialects. The Philippines is also a part of the the Austronesian countries in which Pacific Islanders are also a part of. Austronesian countries s are the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Myanmar, East Timor, Madagascar, Micronesia, Cambodia, Hainan, Polynesia (New Zealand and Hawaii), the non-Papuan people of Melanesia, the Pattanis of Thailand, the Chads of Vietnam, parts of Sri Lanka, and the original Taiwanese people.
Filipinos are geographically Austronesian/south east Asian who had Indianized, Islamized, Sinicized or animist precolonial kingdoms/tribes. Filipinos are also a Hispanized people with cultural and historical connections with Spain, Mexico and the former territories of the First Mexican Empire. I dont get why to some ignorant Americans how being Asian automatically makes you Sinitic in culture. ¡¡Viva la Hispanidad!!
I think slavery was already abolished decades before in America during the Amercian occupation and war in the Philippines(1901 onwards) because the American Civil war ended in 1865, along with it, the legality of slavery. Also, Philippines can also be considered pacific islanders due to their ancestors being sea-faring Austronesian/Polynesian Nomads looking for new lands to call their home, so technically, we are Pacific Islanders, then cross-breeding, chinese and foreign trade, and multiple occupations later, our culture became more and more Asian.
no Filipinos arent Asian or Pacific islanders ....Filipinos are Filipinos we are unique thats nothing to be compared to any other culture mixture of Hispanic, asian and pacifica islander. that is a Filipino
Luel Zone Why would everyone be confused about who they Are? It's these migrants who are confused. I look like a local Hawaiian villager but my kids has chunky eyes that look Chinese....at the end of the day we talk Filipino, eat Filipino, dressed Filipino, act Filipino...
Majority of Southeast Asian countries were colonized. The "uniqueness" you proclaim can be found in other countries. Now explain why is that it's mostly Fil-Ams who claim to be Pacific Islander? and why are there countless videos of Filipinos from the Philippine that claim that Fil-Ams discriminate against them? could it simply be Fil-Ams have an identity crisis? The same Fil-Ams who are so proud to claim "Pacific Islander" would not care and turn around and call actual Filipinos as "FOBS" and ridicule them for not wearing name brand clothing, and make fun of their accents.
SirBigDICKNigga Well explain me then why some other people ( americans ) think that We ( the philippines ) Will reach 1 TRILLION dollars in 2030 or so ? We ARE unique like everyone And well wr arent technicaly asians because Most of us are half spanish cuz spain colonized us so yaaa...

Still Pacific islanders.
It's a Filipino-American identity crisis
It's now 7,641 islands.

Islanders

WE ARE ASIANS.

Learned this from my professor in UP
Yesss!

They're Asian too. Language, food, and culture very much resembles theirs... even their looks. Also, Indians are Asian too.
Asians are not just Chinese, Japanese, and Korean... they are East Asian.
Plus, "Pacific Islander?" Isn't this being a bit too exclusive only to the "morenos" with some ignorance to what the Pacific Islands and its people actually are?
Lets take Malaysia as an example is a mixed society of Chinese, Malay, Indian citizens, they are all Malaysians, they are all Asians.

Great video. Well done, Kirby. Just one little thing - the Philippines is not just an island; we are an archipelago of more than 7000 islands.
So what are you’re opinions? Are my people Asians or Pacific Islanders??
I agree with you. It does fail to address the underlying categories in question. Yes, geographically it's Asia. Race, in my opinion it's Malay (like the Malay race). As far as ethnicity is concerned, it's Pacific Islander (no explanation necessary). I would like to hear your opinion on this, Mr. Lobos. Because only you have dissected this topic intelligently.

In the late 12th or early 13th century, Zamboanga was founded.

Asian is such an old term and the Western Asians really have very little in common with Eastern Asians :/
There's really no reason why we can differentiate Asians more :/
Like so:
Pacific Asians: This includes Any Asian countries east of Myanmar and China (with China included).
Don't make the whole confused. gang ngayon alam ko we are in Asian continent. THATS IT! Non more no less.
tbh, no one's really told me I'm not South East Asian because I'm filipino.
HAHAHHHAAH kaya nga eh
That was very good!
that was perfect. Finally a great answer that I can tell to people who would ask me.
I was born and raised til 12 in the Philippines. I thought I was Asian then. I actually became racially confused when I came to the US cause a lot of people were saying to me things like "but you're not really asian... you're a pacific islander.... you're something else..."
add to that, a lot of applications, even government ones; when it came to filling out your "country of birth," Philippines isn't under the "Asia" list. instead, I'd find it under pacific islands. so it has been so confusing.
July Ski when 2nd world war philippines are occupied by americans .. so they called philippines island in the pacific .. but after ww2 philippines cliamed freedom .. so its belong to asia
In other words these idiots proudly claimed pacific islanders are fooled by americans and only exist in america
😂😂😂😂

how about hawaii? are they considered pacific islander ??
ronnie osial yes Hawaiian are Pacific Islanders
Native Hawaiians are. But just Hawaiian? Noooo
Why would they not be
Anybody who is not Hawaiian should not be calling themselves Hawaiian.
@@uts4448 "If you’re not of native Hawaiian decent, but you were born on Hawaii, you’re still not Hawaiian." -- Exactly! Very well said.
YES! i love this message youre expressing!
Or do you just live with filipinos,
@@polyso5123 and where do you live in hawaii?

Japan is islands and so is Indonesia are they both as well? The line of the Pacific Ocean stops way before the Philippines, in which it turns into the Philippine Sea.
so Brits are Atlantic Islanders ryt? :D
Asian is not an ethnic group. I call them Filipino, Philippines is in Asia.
i dont know why some people are having a hard time understanding that Filipinos are literally, ethnically, racially, geographically Southeast Asians. im so sick and tired explaining this to people.
Leave us alone America
I am a Filipino "Chosen Fine" we are one country and God loves us. We dont let any other nations define us and we should not listen to them. The more we talk about Pacific Islanders the more we get affected by their political agenda. We should embrace the fact that we have our own identity . We are the People of the Philippines the Tiger of Asia.. Roar!!!
Southeast Asian Pacific Islander.
Pepe The Frog: we're more similar to Malays than Polynesian. Malays are Asian. We do have many similarities with Chinese but we are also have many different. Remember that Asian doesn't mean just China. Asians in general are very diverse, each having their own unique differences, especially the Philippines
a person who lives in an island is an islander
Filipinos are descendants of the Malay race, Malays are Asians therefore Filipinos are Asians.
Malakhpearson malaysians came from Philippines not the other way around
Filipino-Americans have no clue about the existence of Malays,or other countries in Southeast Asia. It's easier for the Fil-ams who grew up in Hawaii to identity with Pacific Islanders, and not actual Filipinos from the Philippines who they will refer to as "FOBS".
Studies from the Philippines have also shown it's Taiwan that is the origin of the so called Malay group. Thus Taiwanese aborigines appear to be more "Austronesian/Malay"in physical features.
Yup we filipino are asians and not occupied by other countries anymore
To be honest, I consider it as both. Although I'm fine with putting myself as "Asian Other" here in the UK I definitely see it as a mix of pacific cultures / asian. We Filipinos are well integrated with prehistoric cultures and colonisation. As a definition however - we are limited to only as Asians. I don't really see the problem. Did you know Ilocano is part of the Austronesian family? Now that's confusing if you say that Pacific Islanders have nothing to do with Philippines. Or Vice Versa. It's all the same - in a modernised world we just put these labels to identify ourselves but we have to realise that we're all just tied together in a knot somehow.
but were still ASIAN
by that logic, Indonesians and Malaysians should call themselves Pacific Islanders as well. They're also Austronesians.
Ayos Mukha by that logic japan should just straight up be pulling hakas outa there asses and dripping with lavalsvas
Not asian nor pacific islanders We filipinos are aliens we are unique !!
INDEED !!
Santiago P at least hes not saying hes a pacific islander
Asian.
So the real question is "Are Filipinos Asians, Pacific Islanders, Aborigines, or more European or Latin American-like?"
My personal answer is, we are Asians or we are on our own.
And besides, I have never heard of Philippines being described as Pacific Islanders (or alternative vocabulary: part of Oceania) until just months ago tbh :/
Also, to the people who think Asia is just China, Mongolia, Japan & the two Koreas: Indians (The South Asia ones not the native Americans), Siberians, Turks, Persians, even Arabs and Jews, aren't they also Asians?!!!

Austronesian is not a geographical term. How can you be geographically Austronesian?

Why would everyone be confused about who they Are? It's these migrants who are confused. An example....my grandmother's family were from Spain, she married my grandfather who look like a small native pigmy. On my mother side my uncles and cousins look American cuz they used to live close to the U.S. airport in my island.
