New N-scale railroad, part 10; starting the upper helix

- In part 9, I got the upper grade extended almost to the upper helix. This time, I'll start building the helix that will have the track the rest of the way to upper deck height. Next time, I'll continue with the helix.
Check back each week and watch the project grow.

Wow, hard to imagine what it may look like at the end of the project. I know it would be awesome, kudos.
Interesting to see the balance between 'fix in situ' and having everything pre-engineered. I agree with this balance.
I do whichever is easier for the particular task at hand.
The biggest fear with building in situ is that I might brain-fart and glue something that needs to come apart later.
And this is all in N Gauge? Fabulous!!
Yes, "Nil scale" as Ellie used to call it.
I knew there was a reason I never go to bed before 11. 😂
Looking great as usual.
Same here, but it's probably a different reason to the one you're implying.
You do great work would be cool if he allowed you to run the track from staging up through canyon scene to first town and the track to from the town to the upper helix that way he could run trains while he worked on rest of layout but I do understand financially unable keep up the excellent work
We actually talked about that, and the possibility of doing more of the scenery in the canyon area. It was however more important for the client to have a ceiling installed in his train room so I recommended he spent the money on that instead.
My very first thought: "There's another helix???" Seriously, the complexity of the stuff you build astounds me. For as many layouts as I've built (I just finished # 100) I've never built something this intricate.
Intricate in deed. l try to avoid helix in my designs. However sometimes there is the right client, right room and right design aspects for it.
Buy yeah as intricate as Peter's current build I have not ventured! It looks like a fun build.
Very few multi-deck layouts can avoid a helix altogether as a true "nolix" plan requires a very large room to gain enough separation between levels. One needs somewhere in the region of 80-100' of open main-line, exclusive of yards and other switching areas to avoid a helix. Most published plans that claim to be "nolixes" are either "halflixes" (still requiring one or two laps of helix), or spaghetti-bowls (where the helix has simply been unraveled).
@@mpeterll Agree. Nolix is a great concept. But if you have all that space, you might as well put in a helix.
Lord of the Rings is an acceptable reason to take a day off from railroad building.
It gets more complex by the minute!👍🙂
I think that's a little exaggeration. Maybe it gets more complex by the week though. :-)
@@mpeterll yeah, but i watched one vid, then watched the next one. Maybe that's why-lol-🤔
Dear Peter, awesome construction design! Very curious how you will do both the cantilever for the canyon scene and the hanging supports for the upper helix above the shadow box section! Looking forward to your next episodes! Cheerio
All will be revealed in the appropriate episode.
