Great list! Super happy to have a couple of games I made on your list (General Chaos, Jungle Strike, etc). I'm always happy to hear what fans think of them. Good stuff! BTW, when I made Strider 2014, I actually purposely ignored US Gold's games and barely looked at the NES game. If you're referring to Strider 2014 being a Metroidvania, the main reason was because you can't do a 30 minute arcade game now and expect it to sell. So, the game is a love letter to all things Strider. Sorry it didn't work for you, but as a LIFE-LONG Strider fan, I'm pretty proud of what was done by 22 people in 14 months with a ton of executives trying to get in the way and make it into "Gears of Strider".
@@noaht2005 thanks. I've had to do that a large part of my career. Probably why they never promoted me to the public and why some execs aren't fans of me... but they're fans of the money my games bring in. 😅😅
@@tonybarnes2920 It do be like that. I've enjoyed a few of your older games and I also like Strider so I'll definitely give the remake a go, as well as keep an eye on RetroNinja
General Chaos was epic man, such an original idea and so well executed, the gameplay was just the right amount of "chaos". I see it up there with Comix Zone as far as overall design quality and polished complete package. You're a legend, hope you're doing well!
10 was the proper age for violent games and R rated movies. I had a laminated card with my parent's phone number and their written permission to see whatever I wanted in the theater at that age. It was a more civilized time.
AHah, not that I didn't believe you tho. 90's Generation kicked ass in almost every way! I watched Terminator 2 when I was about 6 years old. *Just seen this was 4 years ago lol
I was a SNES boy and have never owned a Sega console. However, your videos are excellent and this list makes me appreciate just how great the 16 bit era was. Two fantastic consoles, both with a remarkable library of games.
I had a Megadrive, and was lucky to have a SNES owning mate. I think that anyone who didn't experience both was really missing out. There was no loser in the 16 Bit console wars, as they both rocked!
@@SirHilaryManfat yeah I was the same i had the mega drive and my mate Jamie had the Snes do I got to play both and yeah they are both great consoles there could never be a winner really..even though Nintendo are still about it was sad Saga never did much in the end but I got the Saga all stars pack for my ps3 which had all the best Saga games on there..
@@SirHilaryManfat Exactly. It's kind of daft how there are still SNES and Mega Drive fans out there who still refuse to touch anything that was on the competing consoles, or Amiga fans who won't touch anything that was on a any console, period. It was one of the greatest, most diverse eras in gaming, and people who are still fanboying to that degree are only cheating themselves. I'm really glad the indie gaming revolution has really brought 16-bit style 2D gaming back to the forefront. It's like a revival of the 8 and 16-bit eras, and meanwhile there's also plenty of modern stuff still coming out. There truly is something for everybody out there now. :)
@@iamthatguyfromslipknot1137 "it was sad Sega never did much in the end" we are talking about the same Sega right? They have had a massive influence on video gaming, only second to Nintendo really, and they are "still about" releasing games as a developer and Publisher quite regularly as well as licencing out some of the biggest IPs.
I really like how you keep the actual name of the game at the bottom of the screen while you talk about it and show footage I recently got super console x and i enjoy watching these videos to give me ideas of games to play its much easier to write down the good looking games without having to rewind the video to see the name again thanks and i love your selection 👍
In the last two weeks, I have probably watched about 15 hours of Kim Justice videos, it amazes me how people can make such brilliant content. Better that 95% of the shit you see on TV. Nice one.
Loved your list. You didn't cut corners by saying "The games are in alphabetical order" or "One title from each franchise". You flat out said it like it is. Much appreciated!
Madden is THE reason I've bought consoles for 30 years! From the first game on the Megadrive to the ps4 now, I'll get it on Ps5 when I can eventually be bothered with one. Good videos these, came from the Amiga one 😊
Nice list Kim! I find it hard to disagree with too much here except to say that I'm surprised that Landstalker, one of my fave Mega Drive games of all time, didn't even make the list! Oh well, perhaps isometric action rpgs aren't your thing. I also would have placed Shining Force a lot higher up but then, as you say, these lists are very subjective and personal things. Great vid and great work! :)
Old vid but still had to comment. My parents used to play Columns too! That and my dad would play me in Madden '92 and I'd cry like a little spoiled brat when he won. Only videogames they ever touched. Unless video slots count. Lots of nostalgia. Good list. Edit: After watching through. I'm glad you gave Flashback some real love. It's a personal favorite. So much nostalgia from the list. Cast of Illusion and Flicky were games my parents bought for my little brother, they were two of the first games I ever finished. I want to throw out Kid Chameleon as an honorable mention and Sega exclusive I believe. Also Soldiers of Fortune was a great multi-platform game that was a really nice top down shooter with a cool steampunk vibe and a fun upgrade system. Enjoyed how much you know about these old games. Encyclopedic!
Your reviews are great for two key reasons: 1) I am from the UK and things definitely were different in our country and Europe generally in regards to how popular Sega was and the predecessor not really being Atari 2600 or NES but more the home computers. Amerct reviewers often take me out of it when referring to stuff like the gaming crash etc where you obviously don't!! 2) I value the fact that you aren't pretentious in your gaming choices. Many people would retch at the thought of sporting games being on best ever gaming lists, but NHL and the likes were amazing games and deserve to be included on merit. This coming from someone who on a blog once put Virtua Tennis (arcade) as one of my top ten games of all time and got roundly abused for doing so! Keep it up, best gaming channel on UA-cam for all the best reasons!
1:37:39 TAKE THAT BACK! The NES Strider game was great. A bit janky granted, but it was awesome as it's own thing. Fantastic underrated & overhated little metroidvania style game for the NES. All I ever see/hear from the people bashing it, is "because it's not like the arcade/MD/Gen game. The recent remake was a fantastic blend of both the Arcade game and the NES game. It took the best from both and blended them togeather to give us an absolutely INCREDIBLE reboot.
My most favoured console of all time. The memories of playing it at my gran's house on her living room TV are so vivid. I only had a 14" in my bedroom! Sawing off the wee plastic bits to play imported Japanese cartridges felt so good, especially when games hadn't been released in the UK!
Wonderful list, only took 2 days to watch, but I really appreciate the fact that you didn't just show the beginning of the games as many, many other people tend to do, but instead showed the more interesting moments that actually showcase the games better, and I also agree with most of the positions, safe the few.. Kinda wanna make my own list in a similar format, hehe ;P
Glad to see Streets of Rage 2 take the number one spot, my favourite game of all time, and along with Golden Axe it was a HUGE inspiration for CelesSteel!
I have become totally addicted to your lists! But this is my favourite so far.... some great games that I have never heard of that I really want to play! Thanks for the great videos!
Arnold Palmer Golf is the best golf game made along with one of the Neo Geo versions. Ghouls & Ghosts is in my top 10 also Castlevania Bloodlines which you neglected to mention and that makes your list suspect a lil bit. However still not a bad list, I will give a like.
I have been watching John hancock, John riggs, osg and Sega lord x. My favoritt being o. S. G. But i think i have found a New one. I love your naration and opinions. Thanks for these Great videos
Saying that Alien 3 is a pretty average movie is sacrilege :) Love your list, good work! I can add few games here and there, but as I was not really a big fan of Megadrive. I will just watch and listen :)
Kim, thank you so much for starting this video off with the perfect game to reflect your perspective. You do amazing work and it's always a pleasure to see new content from you!
This is a very tough list to put together, but putting Streets Of Rage 2 first made me smile obviously :) I did however expect Quackshot, my favourite Disney game on the system.
I've only played Quackshot in short bursts, but ever since I was a wee lad, in days of yore, I've wanted to play it. It just seems like a really excellent Disney game, and kind of unlike anything else with the adventure elements. Sega had a lot of good Disney games. The Illusion series was fantastic - on the Mega Drive AND the Master System. I also loved the Master System Donald Duck games, Lucky Dime Caper and Deep Duck Trouble.
I totally agree with a majority of your list!! Especially your #1. That was the first game on the Genesis that I was really addicted to playing over and over again. IMO Streets of Rage 2 is the pinnacle of the Genesis gaming.
Another great video, Kim! A couple of games you may want to check out: for fans of Cinematic Platformers (Flashback, Another World, Blackthorne etc.) check out Planet of the Apes for the GBA - a nice little licenced game that plays in the same vein and a hidden gem. Also, Comix Zone had a kind-of spiritual successor: Unbound Saga (download only on XBLA & PSP). Keep up the good work!
@@AlexKidd The sound track is good but saying that it "holds so well in even in 2019" is a bit of a stretch... It was a gang of remakes of Chicago house themes. Even a poor mans Soul 2 Soul remake.. Outside of the Jazz bar theme and the Maxman theme. The SOR2 sound track is MEH! SOR3's sound track was way better in term of originally and being ahead of it's time. Not to mention the Mega Drive had some of gaming best composers like Mateo, Yuki, David, etc.. Sonic 1, Mystic Defender, Revenge of Shinobi... I could go on and on for days.. SOR2 sound track is a 7/10 at best.
Some classic's I loved that didn't make the list - Ecco the Dolphin, WWF Royal Rumble, Terminator 1 & 2 (two very different games), Quackshot (actually my fave Disney game), Chuck Rock, Corporation... I'd have put the three Mortal Kombat's separately too as they've very different. Great to see lesser-known classics like Decap Attack and Alisia Dragoon get some love though.
Nice work Kim - really enjoyed this. Never had a Mega Drive back in the day so really good to get an overview of the best games for the system. I don't tend to collect for the cartridge based systems because I got into it too late and they were already getting expensive, but at least I've got a great list of recommendations ROMs to download and play via emulation now. Thanks for posting!
I mainly remember General Chaos for having a bug that allows you to fling grenades and turn pause on - the action will stop, but for some reason, grenade will still fly and hurt the target. Needless to say, you can cheese the hell out of game with that :b
Have you played the Pyramid Magic games? They were platform puzzle games only available on a precursor to the Sega Channel in Japan, but you can find the ROMs easily today. Kind of like Sokoban as a platformer.
Easy way to beat mission 7 is to use the fighter to uncover as much fuel / ammo pickups as you can and complete the first few missions with it. Land, get back in the Comache and finish the rest.
I’d love to see that PlayStation top 100! Streets of Rage 2 is 100% correct I agree with everything you said, the game is literally perfect. Great list overall.
Rocket Knight Adventures is such an absolute corker of a game! I can fondly remember randomly buying this game along with Final Fantasy XII one weekend after school and let's just say that it was a weekend well spent.
sparkster is great game too. dont listen what internet says. sparkster is closest game to sonics and should be always in top 10. they probably beat the sparskter normal diffuclt whichs some levels and boss missing full experience only availabe on hard diffciulty. ı can even argue sparkster game music good as street of rages musics. sonic 2 and rocket knight got always top games treatment but sonic 3 and knucles and sparster not they both better.
good list, except for one glaring exclusion: Ecco 2. Ecco was the dark mascot of SEGA and inspired some of the best atmosphere, music and story on the system. a very unique HORROR game in its own right and one of the best looking games of the 16-bit era. definitely worthy of top 20

Hi, Kim. Great video, as always! But what happened to Contra: Hard Corps? Did you forget to include it on the list, or are you just not particularly fond of it?
Streets of Rage 2 is actually the best beat 'em up game of all time on all platforms. I do think Streets of Rage 1 has a slightly better soundtrack, but #2 is the total package that takes on all comers.
I feel so deprived missing out on Genesis.. But I did have TurboGrafX & SNES.. You really know your platforms Kim! These kinds of videos are among your best imo
Awesome video Kim! Love the Genesis so much. I never played the system back then, here where I live it wasn't as popular as Nintendo consoles. I had a NES and traded it around 2000's for a Genesis with a friend's friend lol and the game the guy gave me was Streets of Rage 2. Since then the Genesis became my favourite console ever. What a damn good game to start with a blind trade XD
Kim on the winuae Amiga emulator - is there an option to switch on off the hard disc on version 1.3 of kstart and workbench roms???? in order to boot from floppy or hard disc? thanks....
Thank you, Kim, for creating this list. Super cool to sit through it and remembering, with awesome pleasure, playing most of them. I'm a relatively new subscriber to your channel, but totally enjoy your content and presentation style.

Your channel intro music when the logo comes up reminds me of an old TV jingle on mold programmes back in the day (in the UK).... like the Thames TV logo? Is that intentional?
Great video! A few points: 1. Landstalker? 2. Nice to hear a shout out for Sonic 1's special stage. Always thought it was the best one of the Mega Drive trilogy 3. Landstalker? 4. Quack Shot? 5. Good choice for Number One 6. Yay for the Dick Tracy love 7. Surely Super Street Fighter should be in over Championship Edition since it has all the features of the latter plus a lot more 8. Landstalker????!!!!
Pete Sampras 96 was the first game I worked on. I was only about 16yrs old at the time and worked on it while a college. I did the shadows on some of the sprites. The game was made by Merit Studio's for Codemasters. I remember walking into the shops and seeing it on the shelves. Proud moment for me, even though I only had a small part to play.
Madden 92 is also the best Madden game on the Genesis because it has the ambulance that runs over players which the NFL made them remove in future installments. One of the things that made me the happiest here is the love for Space Harrier II. That game is constantly beaten up by people for not being as good as the original arcade title even though it's quite solid. I also loved seeing Splatterhouse 2 in the top ten. Some of my favorites like Rolling Thunder 2 are missing but you can't have everything.
Altered Beast, pack in game, with the Megadrive I bought, could've, was the best game for the system, but system had a long life and was enjoyed by many, so many more great games followed, the Gley Lancer game is very good. Got to disagree, MC Kids for NES a wonderful platform, really close to SMB3, in terms system greats, imo, definitely far better than any version of the McDonald's licensed games for Sega, or Atari. Otherwise credit for producing such content, I appreciate being able to consider what you think of these games, thank-you.
great, list and information. your videos are so pleasant to watch. a few games i couldn't believe you missed though: cosmic spacehead, boogerman, captain planet & the planeteers, california games, lion king, MJ's moonwalker, micro machines
Someone else who likes Splatterhouse 2 more than 3! 😄 Even more than just the visuals was how they were paired with the sound design, a commonality of all my favourite MegaDrive games. The music was great and young child me found the sound of the screaming zombies in the lift genuinely haunting! I also have a soft spot for D&D: Warriors of the Eternal Sun, my first RPG and what got me into them. Again, the music was badass and the clanging ring on striking a blow (or one being struck on you) felt suitably impactful ☺️
Another fantastic video! I just recently began using the Genesis/ Megadrive on my RetroPie. Given that I was well into PC gaming by the time it got popular I am expieriencing all of these games for the first time. Very informative.
A very fun list! Stunned to not see Shining Force 2, though. That and King's Bounty were the only really surprising omissions, and I figure you might associate that one more with the computer version.
wow overkill, I have a selection of 100 games for Genesis roms instead of a full set, and more than 30 different games from this list... it shows how good the console is I guess
Since returning to Retro gaming about 2/3 years ago, I cant get over SoR 2 is now almost always number one on everyones list. I loved it when I was 12 in the school yard and would always protest how much more a complete game it was than Street Fighter. I was in the vast minority. The sands of time would seem to have proved the Steets of Rage crew correct. Thank you Kim that was awesome.
I hate to be negative but I didn't like those games either but hey we all like different things i suppose and just because someone else doesn't like it doesn't mean its not good,,just as long as you like it the fill you boots mate..
Great list and I love that you share your personal memories attached to each game, as we've all got some of our own as well. What a fantastic console this was.

‘Gears of strider’. Oh dear, I can only imagine. Good work sticking to your guns and not bending to the execs
@@noaht2005 you're a bozo. Little noah
😂 10 years old.
@@Wil_Dsense yep
AHah, not that I didn't believe you tho. 90's Generation kicked ass in almost every way! I watched Terminator 2 when I was about 6 years old. *Just seen this was 4 years ago lol
@@posthumanistpotato your parents were sh.tty pos
Sounds like they were out smoking 🪨 s. In any event that's a sh.tty parent.
Battle Golfer Yui has actually been fan translated, in fact. Great video.
@@iamthatguyfromslipknot1137
"it was sad Sega never did much in the end" we are talking about the same Sega right? They have had a massive influence on video gaming, only second to Nintendo really, and they are "still about" releasing games as a developer and Publisher quite regularly as well as licencing out some of the biggest IPs.
I had both, the mega drive 1st. It was a privilige. They were both fantastic in their own ways.
Big shout for Landstalker, my favourite Megadrive game.
I really like how you keep the actual name of the game at the bottom of the screen while you talk about it and show footage
I recently got super console x and i enjoy watching these videos to give me ideas of games to play its much easier to write down the good looking games without having to rewind the video to see the name again thanks and i love your selection 👍
Almost two hours of Kim talking mega drive games. Smashing way to start the work week!
@matt yeah really..
There's always one aint there on every comments section you always get one..lol..
Madden is THE reason I've bought consoles for 30 years! From the first game on the Megadrive to the ps4 now, I'll get it on Ps5 when I can eventually be bothered with one.
Good videos these, came from the Amiga one 😊
Great stuff, Kim! I hope you'll decide to do one of these for the Master System at some point!
Great video. The way you talk about these games really takes me back. Thanks
Your reviews are great for two key reasons:
1) I am from the UK and things definitely were different in our country and Europe generally in regards to how popular Sega was and the predecessor not really being Atari 2600 or NES but more the home computers.
Still watching, but thought that I'd mention that Flicky was also released for the SG-1000. That port I have. Don't have the Genesis version.
Battle Golfer Yui did get a translation not too long ago if you want to play the single player mode.
No Buck Rogers? I was happy to see Romance of the Three Kingdoms III get a good spot.
No bozo, no buck Rodgers. It doesn't deserve a spot on the list wanna know why? It's HIS LIST.! Not yours
Retrolution Games if every game was designed with the level of care ,love and quality as street of rage 2
Good List. Personally "The Revenge of Shinobi" is the best game on the Sega Genesis.
I was going to comment this, Shinobi III has more flashy graphics but the level design is no where near as good
@@NB-1 You know what's good my friend and I like that.
@@AlexKidd Agreed
I have become totally addicted to your lists! But this is my favourite so far.... some great games that I have never heard of that I really want to play! Thanks for the great videos!
Arnold Palmer Golf is the best golf game made along with one of the Neo Geo versions. Ghouls & Ghosts is in my top 10 also Castlevania Bloodlines which you neglected to mention and that makes your list suspect a lil bit. However still not a bad list, I will give a like.
The contrast of going from Arnold blasting fools, directly to Ronald McDonald
I have been watching John hancock, John riggs, osg and Sega lord x. My favoritt being o. S. G. But i think i have found a New one. I love your naration and opinions. Thanks for these Great videos
I loved these Top100 videos. So nice to see so many games that I haven't heard of that I'd love to play.
The backgrounds in Batman were beautiful along with the rain effects
you're a legend. watched your documentaries and im impressed with your passion about video games man, big ups!
Big ups lmao tell me you're a little white kid living with mommy without telling me 😂
Saying that Alien 3 is a pretty average movie is sacrilege :) Love your list, good work!
Yuzoboy spoilers fuckface! 😉
When you turn on your computer and greeted to this in your subs.. Coffee check, phone off check. 1hr 50mins of goodness, thanks Kim :)
Top vid Kim. Your love for the MD really shines through.
I totally agree with a majority of your list!! Especially your #1. That was the first game on the Genesis that I was really addicted to playing over and over again. IMO Streets of Rage 2 is the pinnacle of the Genesis gaming.
Good selections and interesting commentary, well done man!
SOR2 is still the best beat em up... the music holds up so well even in 2019
So you still listen to 90s Chicago house?
Particularly the jazz bar in round 1
@@AveMcree if the sound track of this game isn't good to you then you have no soul
Golden Axe 3 is my favourite beat'em up on the Sega Genesis.
Sor2 agree. But I think biohazard battle should have been in here somewhere
Ruddy bloody brilliant vid as always! The best console imo and nostalgiariffic!
Great stuff Kim.
Brings back so many memories. I think the Mega Drive was the favourite console I ever had.
Very nice! I love gigantic list videos like this. Was dissapointed that my personal #1 Mega Drive game QuackShot didn't even make the top 100 though.
That smile when you know Streets of Rage 2 is the one still missing ;)
I’d love to see that PlayStation top 100! Streets of Rage 2 is 100% correct I agree with everything you said, the game is literally perfect. Great list overall.
1000% agree with this!
@@grantfullick yeah me too..
A great watch. Watched from start to finish. Great work, Kim!
Great video, a few new ones for me there. Disappointed that TNMT didn't make the top 100 tho!

Hi, Kim. Great video, as always! But what happened to Contra: Hard Corps? Did you forget to include it on the list, or are you just not particularly fond of it?
Know what'd be awesome? A Phantasy Star 2&4 Review in the style of your FF7&8 review.
Great list, was very surprised to find no Ecco 2 there though. That's like top 3 for me
Thanks for putting Toejam and Earl in its rightful place!!
one game missing from my childhood that I used to love on the mega drive was worms..... caused many a family feud
This is the first time to give a comment for 100 games. looks fun to do i bet you can do another 100 more for the megadrive!
Streets of Rage 2 is actually the best beat 'em up game of all time on all platforms. I do think Streets of Rage 1 has a slightly better soundtrack, but #2 is the total package that takes on all comers.
Truxton is the very first Genesis game I ever played on my new Christmas Genesis mom and dad bought me. i was NOT disappointed.
I feel so deprived missing out on Genesis.. But I did have TurboGrafX & SNES.. You really know your platforms Kim! These kinds of videos are among your best imo
I cant narrow down my top 10 Genesis/MD games let alone 100! Bravo. Favorite system and favorite library of games.

Flippin Landstalker is so good. Easily my favourite Genesis game, though I recognize that the controls can be a pain in the ass.
Herzog Zwei is a classic, and Wonder Boy games on the Mega Drive.. There are tones of underrated games on the Mega Drive..
My favorites are thunder force 4, streets of rage 2, shinobi 3, gunstar heroes
Are you getting a MegaDrive mini to review ?
Your channel intro music when the logo comes up reminds me of an old TV jingle on mold programmes back in the day (in the UK).... like the Thames TV logo? Is that intentional?
Love the list! I’m surprised that Shining Force II didn’t make the cut, but outside of that for me, it’s tough to argue with your top 5.
Great video! A few points:
1. Landstalker?
2. Nice to hear a shout out for Sonic 1's special stage. Always thought it was the best one of the Mega Drive trilogy
3. Landstalker?
4. Quack Shot?
5. Good choice for Number One
6. Yay for the Dick Tracy love
7. Surely Super Street Fighter should be in over Championship Edition since it has all the features of the latter plus a lot more
8. Landstalker????!!!!
Big shout out for mentioning ROTK3. My favorite sega game ever by far. I spent many many hours on this game.
Your 5th is good, but your 73rd game is Masterpiece.
Helluva vid, Kim. I'll have to check out some of these that I've not played.
Skitchin' looks awesome. Gawd I miss the '90s.
Loved a few of these but where the hell is Micro Machines 2? Maybe THE best game on the Mega
Kim iv been binging so many of your vids, there amazing! Really enjoying seeing the games I enjoyed n the ones I am yet too!!! Thank you
great, list and information. your videos are so pleasant to watch. a few games i couldn't believe you missed though: cosmic spacehead, boogerman, captain planet & the planeteers, california games, lion king, MJ's moonwalker, micro machines
Someone else who likes Splatterhouse 2 more than 3! 😄
Even more than just the visuals was how they were paired with the sound design, a commonality of all my favourite MegaDrive games.
I bought an officially sanctioned Mega Drive Mini - and the games I gravitated towards: SOR2 & Phantasy Star IV - both great games
Bank holiday Monday, almost 2 hours of Megadrive content, sorted.
Keep up the good work!
What about the Ecco the dolphin games, both of them were awesome.
Reznor NIN no Ecco? Just lost all respect for mr justice
They were boring. Sorry x
I hate to be negative but I didn't like those games either but hey we all like different things i suppose and just because someone else doesn't like it doesn't mean its not good,,just as long as you like it the fill you boots mate..
They're more frustrating then fun honestly great graphics for the time though.
Awesome video! Thanks for making it.
Great list and I love that you share your personal memories attached to each game, as we've all got some of our own as well. What a fantastic console this was.
People who spout off about turtles in time... never grew up with Streets of Rage 2.
